OK to copy Win7 (Home Premium SP1) disk to external hard drive?

The MICROSOFT SOFTWARE LICENSE TERMS for Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
say:
10. BACKUP COPY.
a. Media.If you acquired the
software on a disc or other media, you may make one backup copy of the media. You may use it only to reinstall the software on the licensed computer.
That tells about backing up the installation media.
What about "backing up" the Windows disk itself, by copying a mirror image it to an (portable) external hard drive, similar to what's mentioned in
According to Malmition's November 12, 2012 Making a copy of Windows disk - Microsoft technical link request
post on this forum:
I work with an engineer that feels he constantly needs to restore his windows 7 drive to its original state.
He does this by have a copy of his c drive - it is not an image and he is not using any imaging software - just a flat copy of his c drive.
When we wants to start over he formats his drive, boot from a thumb drive, and copies the c drive back.
This is working fine for him.
I've watched him do the copy back and forth so I see he's not using anything to image like ghost, acronis, etc
I thought you couldn't just copy your windows drive?
I'd like to do something similar.
Is that allowed by the Win7 Home Premium SW license terms?
Thank you.

Sorry to say: Try to solve real problems.
Major drawback: You have not specified what license you have. Specification Win7 Home Premium is not enough.
1. Do not compare installation content on DVD and that of on hard disk. Installation disk contains packed files for your Windows. Sector by sector copy of HDD is NOT the same as what you can find on install DVD. From the point of law, the backup use (native,3rd
pty or by DD sector by sector) is legal, if you use it for restoration of Windows on HDD for the same computer, if you have ONE license.
2. No one could object the situation, when you are backing multiple times (full, incremental,... backup)
3. You cannot discuss c: drive only, because there is another partition that is important, namely hidden system partition. (Minimum of two partitions). License should cover the whole disk, not boot partition only.
4. There are special rules for OEM, multilicenses, ... I have created system image that I distributed on many computers, because of I used special licenses that allow for multiple use in lab environment (Campus License, MSDN Academic Alliance, Dreamspark)

Need to transfer home movies from iPhone to external hard drive.  The movies were created with Flip Video, not iPhone.  I can see and watch them via iTunes but have not figured out how to move them from iPhone to hard drive. iPhone is broken (screen) and locked, but is still connecting to iTunes.  I have backed up all photos/videos created with the iPhone, just need to figure out how to get these last videos off the phone.  They are very important.  I am working off a Windows XP machine.  No, the camera wizard will not work for this as these videos are not stored in that area of the phone.
    Thanks,

This is what I have done so far and stuck again.
I opened Image capture plugged in IPhone.  Device brought up camera roll pics only.
I was able to send them to the external hard drive.  Now they have green checks marks.  I cannot seem to remove them. Don't want to delete them yet to put into folder for having prints made..
Devices showed IPhone but would only show  camera roll I have two other folders and cannot seem to go to them to show up on the device  one is Photo library has 300+ pics and
last import folder.   I would like to take the 300 also from the Photo library and also copy them or move them to the external hard drive.
What step am i missing , please help.
    thank you

I upgraded MacbookPro 2009 from 10.6.8 to Yosemite 2 weeks ago. My iphoto is now a nightmare. i went to our local apple retailer but they could not help either. Perhaps someone can help. Beforehand the OS upgrade I made a backup copy of my Iphoto library onto an external hard drive. Lets call it BU with 50GB. I also deleted half of my photos from the default library on my laptop, lets call it DE, now with about 20GB, to gain space. I then upgraded to Yosemite.
I have also installed since a long time Iphoto Library Manager 3.8.6. (this may be the cause of the problem as it was not upgraded and perhaps thus not compatible with iphoto 9.6 which I have now after the upgrade to Yosemite) It all worked fine before the upgrade, switching in iphoto between the two libraries DE and BU.
It also worked fine after the upgrade for a few days. At one stage Iphoto asked me to upgrade the iphoto version as it otherwise could not read the photos when I tried to load the BU library into iphoto. I did click yes to upgrade iphoto. As a result I became a brand new but totally empty library, no photos.
BU was still on the external disc, however the "Master" file was empty. We fortunately discovered all photos were in another file called Old Master, also under BU. We made another copy of the Old Master file onto the external disc. Lucky we did, because shortly afterwards we could not open anymore the BU file thus had no access to anything in there. Now I have 17000 photos in a file called Old Master on my external disc and another smaller library  DE on my laptop. When I tried to import the photos from Old Master into a new iphoto library it was very messy. All events dates were mixed up, many photos were imported twice. I have no idea whether all my 17000 photos have been imported.
Can anyone suggest what is the most time efficient way? How do I best import my 17000 into a new library ensuring I don't loose any in the process. I do not wish sorting through 17000 photos for a week or so. Shall i also get a new iphoto library version now? Thank you for anything that may work.

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

    tornado2003,
What you need to do is boot into Safe Mode. Then delete the VGA Drivers.
After that boot normally and install the latest nVidia ForceWare Drivers

  • Copying Large Blocks of MP3 files from External Hard Drive to iTunes

I'm trying to copy large numbers of MP3 files from my external
hard drive to iTunes. I tried putting them in the iTunes music folder but this did not work. Then I tried selecting blocks of the songs and dragging and dropping them in iTunes. This also did not work because when I select a large block of files and then click on them (holding down the mouse button) to drag them, then they become "unselected." So, I guess my question is 2 fold: Why can I not copy and paste these files to some folder on the Macintosh Hard drive where they will be recognized by iTunes (show up in iTunes) and what is wrong with my clicking and dragging technique? Am I losing it?

If you are trying to add tunes to your library then do the work from within iTunes not via the Finder. Droping the tunes into the iTunes folder will not create a reference for iTunes to find the tunes. You should be able to drag-drop the tunes/folders into the main iTunes window.
It is usually easier to use the 'keep' and 'copy' features selected. This way iTunes will keep your tunes organized and all in one place. If you work from in the iTunes interface then you will likely not go wrong.
From the iTunes File menu select 'add to library' (+O) and navigate to your ext HD and iTunes should bring those tunes into your library.

  • I'm not able to copy any type of file to my external hard drive, why?

I am trying to copy files (photos, documents, music, etc) to my external hard drive to free up space but when I drag files to the icon it gives me a crossed out circle logo and it doesn't let me move it. I use this drive for my pc as well.

If the drive is formatted as an NTFS then Macs cannot write to it. You can try using 'NTFS-3G', its free and you can download it at: http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml

  • FCE Express is writing render files to startup disk not external hard drive

    Hi
I'm using FCE Express HD 3.5.1, with a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 2 GB memory.

Any ideas what is going on?

  • Copying the catalog to laptop and/or external hard drive

I have a rather complex task.
I am using PSE 4 on a Windows XP Desktop. I copied my folder and subfolders with my pictures to an external hard drive. My catalog, I think, is in a hidden file under Documents and Setting\all users\application data\Adobe. How do I copy this to the external drive so that PSE 4 knows where it is.
I will upgrade to PSE7 when I get this all figured out.
I have a new Windows Vista Laptop and want to install PSE 7 and use the external hard drive to edit/save etc my photos.
Do I need to copy the files and catalog in a different way to the external hard drive?
Is there a simpler way to do this?
    Thanks for your help.
    Sandra

To move the catalog, you have to find it in Windows and move it in Windows.
But more importantly ... are you doing all this so you can get your PSE catalog up and running on the laptop? If so, the easiest way to do this is to first install PSE7 on the desktop. It will convert your catalog for you. Make sure everything is working properly, and then, move things. To move to a new computer, use the File->Backup Catalog command on your old desktop, make sure everything is written to the external hard drive, and then on the new laptop, install PSE7, use File->Restore Catalog. This way, you don't have to move files, you don't have to know where things are or where things are supposed to be. It's the easiest way to go, you let the software do the work and keep track of details instead of you doing the work and keeping track of details.

  • Home iTune server using USB external hard drive

I have Mac and PC at home, and wish to set up kind of a NAS for backup and stream music. I read that with Airport Extreme, I can hook up any USB-enabled external hard drive to stream music through iTunes.
Do I need one with "iTune server" capability built-in (such as WD My Book World Edition), or any o'regular external hard drive will work?
Must I use Airport Extreme? Or any wLAN hub with USB connection?

hi - thanks for responding!  I have comcast and have their modem.  I hooked up the router with my laptop and went through the setup fine.  Everything with that works ok.  The USB drive is recognized on the web based utility program that you use to set up the router.  However, no where on my computer can I find the USB drive or where to even set up that driver.  The manual says that my router should be listed as a another computer in my network neighborhood and that I should be able to find the hard drive through that.  It is not.  Its only listed in my wireless connections.  I talked to a rep at linksys for awhile.  In the end, they just suggested unplugging it and plugging it back in......that didn't work!  Does that help?

  • Disk utility/external hard drive failure

I have a MacBook that I got about two years ago and a Western Digital portable external hard drive (WD Passport) that's almost as old. I keep almost all of my music files on my external hard drive and then play them through iTunes. About a month ago my external hard drive stopped working. I plug the hard drive into my computer and the blue light comes on. It even shines brighter for several seconds as (it appears) the hard drive attempts to mount. But every time I do this the blue light then becomes dimmer and the drive never mounts. When the hard drive is plugged in and I open up the Disk Utility application the drive shows up. When I try to manually mount the disk it tries and fails. When I click "Verify Disk" it tries and then an error message pops up saying "Phase 1-Read FAT, Unable to read FAT (Input/output error)". I've read that the PC disk utility application may be better at reading drives so, once I'm in a place where I have access to a PC, I'm going to give that a try. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I am assuming that you're using the Passport in the same USB port that you always have. I ask this because some people complain about USB devices working on one port but not the other, as they claim that one port may put out more voltage then the other. If this is happening in your case it would kinda make since as when you plug in the Passport all that is required is the logic board power then it will start to spin up the disk which will pull down the power and that may be why you're getting a dimmed light on the Passport.
Just try the other USB port to verify, I know it sounds silly but it's worth a shot.

  • It takes like more than a day to copy folders of total 30gb from my external hard drive to my macbook pro. And same is to transfer from one destination to another within the macbook. i bought it on november 2012 it was fast then. don't know what happen?

i am having problem copying any files or folders from any external device or moving between folders within the macbook. its too slow and takes a load of time. as you can see above picture it makes all clear.
its not even old i just bought it on november 2012. it worked fine 2-3 weeks but now it not good. even apps take more time to open. it is getting too slow so soon. anyone with solutions ? please help me.

What kind of external device is it? USB 2 is the slowest port on the Mac, Firewire 800 and eSATA and Gigabit Ethernet are much faster, USB 3 and Thunderbolt are extremely fast.
Also, if the hard drive is almost full things can slow down.

  • Error - 36 can't copy any of my files to a external hard drive

Can somebody help me? I'm trying for many days to copy all my info and it's imposible, error -36 can't read or copy to my external hardrive. First it was my iphoto library bur now is with itunes and all data.... i'm desperate, i have 145gb of photos and i need to delete hard drive because the system is too slow.
I have a copy in time machine of all my hardrive but i don't know if the error is there as well

    Depends
If yoou only want copies of your pictures ten export to the external drive (see the user tip on exporting for details on the options available)
If you want a backup for your iPhoto library it is buest to use ongoing, constant backup software like Time Machine
If you want a one shot copy of your iPhoto library then
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and thenrepeat to switch back to the main libary
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
