OK to CTRL-ALT-DEL a stuck catalog backup?

All,
On my Win7 64bit laptop LR 3.2 got stuck during a catalog backup. Exited LR and was reminded it was time for a regular catalog backup. Started backup with a click. a little later the laptop went to sleep (hasn't been a problem before) and when I woke it up there was a green progress bar nearly "done" in a Progress box subtitled "Optimizing Previews catalog". There was no progree for 10 minutes, maybe 20, so I clicked "Cancel" but there was no change in either thebar or anything else except the button I clicked for Cancel changed to say "Cancelling...". During all this the green bar graphic pulses as I guess it is supposed to. I closed everything else. This is a 4Gig machine.
Nothing has changed for a couple of hours.
I see only one process in the process manager that is labeled Lightroom: the whole program.
Think I can nuke it without damage? If it's damaged what is the best way to return the catalog to health?
Thanks, in advance, for any suggestions.
jonathan7007

Yes, happens sometimes to me, too.
Particularly when I have opened and closed LR several times without backing up.
When it gets stuck up, hit the <Enter> key and a dialog will come up saying that the backup could not be completed and if you want to retry or close without backup. Usually the backup works on the second try.

  • Windows Server 2012R2 - Cannot RDP, server hangs at logon from console after pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL

We have several machines that have exhibited this behavior so far. Once they get into this state, the only option is to reboot. They are HP ProLiant BL460c G7 blades.
    The behavior exhibited is:
You can no longer RDP to the machine.  It just eventually times out.
Console access via iLO shows what you'd expect, asking for CTRL+ALT+DEL, but when you press that, it just goes to the dark blue screen with "Windows Server 2012 R2" written at the bottom and doesn't go further.
There doesn't seem to be any unusual notes in the System Log that I can see.

I've also read the support article that you linked, but that seems to suggest that there is always a problem with RDP and in this case the server gets to a point where it is stuck and requires a reboot to clear.
    Hi Mitch,
For the above line of yours seems there is some misunderstanding, as nowhere in the link provided it suggest to restart\reboot the server. But instead need to check the certificate related scenario.
Can you ping the destination server when you can’t perform RDP?
Now for more troubleshooting you can choose performance monitor and can see what is effecting, for that you can go through beneath article.

  • Tried installing Windows Vista, cancelled install and now it won't boot from the OEM Vista DVD, all i get is BOOTMGR is missing error... Ctrl Alt Del to restart and when i turn the computer on i get a blank screen and pressing C is not working to boot....

    Topic says it all...
My friend started a installation of Windows Vista, but pulled out after deleting all partitions...
So now i power it on, get a blank screen (seems a bit gray because of backlighting, should show the apple logo right?)...
Then after like 15-20sec it will throw out a:
    BOOTMGR is missing
    Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
I have a OEM Windows Vista DVD in the drive, and i know... Windows 7 is better... but i'm not that fond of stealing software from Microsoft and i have 10 licenses for Vista...
I have tried pressing C while booting up but it doesn't work...
Does anyone here have a magic soloution for me, and no i will not install MacOS on it !!!

Deleting Boot Camp partitions the conventional way will not work . You must use the Boot Camp Assistant to remove a Boot Camp partition. Here is a link to the guide.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup_10.6.pdf
The way to restart is to hold down the option/alt key during startup* and then selecting the Mac OS. If you have a valid Boot Camp install of Windows it would show up during this type of start up.
    * hold down immediately after pressing the power button and until the OS choice screen appears.
    To summarize.
1 Use the above method to boot into Mac OS.
2 Download the instructions and read them.
3 Use Boot Camp Assistant to remove the partition.
4 Pick your friends more carefully.

  • Revolve 810 G1 Unlock Computer when in Tablet Mode. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL or Windows Security Button

    1.  I have an Revolve 810 G1
Running Windows 7 Pro (64 Bit).
When I change the screen to Tablet Mode
(Folding tablet over keyboard and using as tablet).
    I lock my computer.
    2.  What to know how to unlock without having to Open back up and use the CTL-Alt-DEL keys.
When Locked screen shows:  Press CTRL-ALT-DEL or use the Windows Security Button to unlock this computer.
I would like to use the Windows Button on the bottom of the screen
(One Used in Windows 8 to change between Desktop and Metro) to Unlock screen And bring up on screen keyboard to put in my password.
This is probably how it should work, but it does not work.
Even bringing up the onscreen keyboard via the blue power button On the screen to Ease Of Access does not work.
The CLT-ALT-DEL on the on screen keyboard will not unlock the screen.
    P.S.
Where is that Windows Security Button when you need it?
    Thanks,
    Rog

If you are using Windows 7 (not Windows 8), you should be able to touch the Ease of Access button at the lower left of the screen, then select Type without the keyboard (On-screen keyboard). When the on-screen keyboard pops-up, press CTRL, then ALT, then DEL. You should get a password prompt; the on-screen keyboard will stay visible unless and until you close it.

  • Ctrl Alt Del and Task manager not working

Hi, Ive been having a problem getting task manager to run at all. On a fresh reboot, if I use the ctrl alt del function the according screen will come up like normal, and I will click on task manager. It bring me back to my desktop and nothing pops up.
Its not running in my task bar or anything. Then if I try to use the ctrl alt del function again, nothing happens. Ive tried running task manager straight from the start menu, but then I get an error saying that the version of that file is not compatible with
the version of windows I am running, which is 64 bit W7. It just started happening on my system a few days ago and I have changed nothing the past few days. I have tried to do a system restore, but to my idiocy, I did not know I needed to manually create restore
points. So I can only restore to yesterday which would fix nothing. I have run antivirus and anti spyware programs and they have shown no problems and my hard drive only has a 1% disk fragmentation. Is there a way to uninstall and re download a 64 bit compatible
version of the windows 7 task manager? Or is there a separate reason why it is not working? Thankyou

Also try it By Registry Editor :
    Start --> Run --> regedit --> ok
    Then
    Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
    Name: DisableTaskMgr
    Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0=Disablethis key, that is Don't Disable, Enable TaskManager
    Regards,
    MCP | MCTS | MCITP
The first fix did not work, I tried doing the second one but there is no system folder in
    Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
The only one its showing is an explorer folder.

Is this really a key combination you find it easy to press by mistake? To answer the question, no, it doesn't look like you can remap that, but note that if you choose Edit -> Undo immediately after deleting, the message will come back.

  • Firefox 9.0.1 keeps hanging once I access a website with video, when I write e-mails etc. If a press ctrl+alt+del, opens a window to confirm closing, and firefox works again. When I close that confirm window, firefox immediately hangs again.

It stops working if I access websites with videos, and all sort of more complex flash. It I try to write an e-mail, it also stops. I can't do anything. PC keeps working, though. So I press ctrl+alt+del. It opens that window asking if you want to close all the tabs. I notice that firefox start to work again, behind that window. But, once I close the window, it stops again. Sometimes I can close the tab with the video before it hangs again, which can take a few ctr+alt+del's. It doesn't happen with other browsers! It started 1 week ago. Is it an extension? Or a virus (i use avast)? Thank you!

  • Error message NTLDR is missing - press ctrl alt del to restart

    Hello,
I am extremely embarrassed to admit the following and ridiculously angry with myself for doing something as totally stupid as I did, but it is done now..sigh..
I have the NTLDR is missing - press ctrl alt del to restart nightmare error.
This is how it happened. I need(ed) to reformat my hard drive, but first I was going to back up everything. I back up every so often, though, now I know not near as often as I should!. (last back up was 5/21/07 sigh.) Well, not thinking, instead of backing up, I put the restore cd in the drive and the screen came up saying: "loading ramdisk" then I got to the next screen which basically was asking if I wanted to restore out of the box or not. I chose the first step in the wizard which said out of the box. Then I clicked NEXT and realized I had not backed up my files!! So I cancelled out of the restore cd wizard.
When I restarted the computer, I got the aforementioned nightmare error.
I have been researching for many, many hours on how to fix it or at least be able to boot into windows. I've done the following:
    1. created a floppy boot disk with ntldr, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini on it to restore I have all but I don't know if the dates mean anything on the ones downloaded from another laptop
this did not work I still came up with the same error or some other errors one pointing to hal\something. i am not sure if it is my boot.ini that is causing the problem or what. Oh, by the way, I went into the BIOS and made sure that the computer booted up to FDD first when trying the floppy option.

    Hi
Its a very stupid and tricky situation.
The simplest solution would be the HDD formatting and new reinstallation of the OS.
But it seems you want to rescue all the files available on the HDD.
    Hopefully its not too late
Hmmm. I think youve got only one chance!!! You have to remove the internal HDD from the notebook and try to connect it to second PC via external USB controller!!!!
Such part is not expensive and can be ordered from every notebook dealer.
You should be able to get the access to the HDD removed from notebook....
After this procedure the HDD should be formatted in NTFS and all partition should be erased!
Then you should try to start the installation procedure from the Windows or Recovery CD.
By the way; I have investigate a little bit in the Microsoft database and found these both documents:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318728
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314057
Maybe some hints described in these documents could be useful.
    Good luck

  • HT5628 ctrl-alt-del logon & Bitlocker on Win8 with new MacBookAir doesn't work

Am running the latest BootCamp and have a brand new MacBookAir and Win8.
On the Windows Logon Screen I can't use ctrl+alt-del even with fn key or on-screen keyboard. The only way I can logon is by plugging in my keyboard - does any one have a tip please?
I'd like to use Bitlocker HD encryption in Win8, but don't know how to do this, e.g. with storing the Key on a USB thumbdrive if that's the only option - any help is apppreciated.
    Thanks!!

Tthere seems to be a non TPM compatible BIOS on MacBookAir: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee449438%28WS.10%29.aspx#BKMK_NoTPM
And the a plugged in USB drive during the BitLocker Requirement Check yields no change.

  • [Boot Camp] Can't send a Ctrl-Alt-Del during first boot!

    Hello,
I just Installed WIndows Server on iMac using Boot Camp. It requires that once the password is set (per Group Policy on Windows Server PCs), I'll have to login by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del (this is my first time login) and i'm unable to figure out how can it be done! I know that there is a discussion running everywhere about the PC equivalent "Del" key on iMac. I have tried the following -
    1. Ctrl-Alt-Del (Del is actually Backspace) : Doesn't work
    2. Ctrl-Alt-Del (Fn Key pressed down - that makes it delete) : Doesn't work
I read somewhere that mapping a key differently should work. But i'm unsure of the process and i also understand that i'll have to do it from the OS. In my case, i'm not logged in yet! Is there someone who can help me in this regard?
Maybe, I can use backspace and delete functions on iMac but i'm looking for a equivalent "Delete" KEY and not Delete FUNCTION to Login. If you can point me to a existing thread or post solutions/thoughts, i'll be thankful.

The retail OS X 10.6.3 DVDs unlike your OEM DVD does have a complete set of drivers for $29 w/o having to deal with questionable bitorrent.
Microsoft EOL'd XP and Vista SP1.
Your Mac has Intel Thunderbolt and you don't see Apple doing backward compatibility. You can't run 10.5 on new Mac. So yes it comes with those limitations, but XP is also 20x more vulnerable, IE9 is more secure and XP has not kept up with the latest hardware, besides which I don't see a place or need for a 32-bit OS, any platform today.

  • Can I use xbootmgr to measure what causes a failure to present credentials screen after ctrl-alt-del?

    Hello,
I have several machines that are producing the same issue that when a user reboots, they are greeted as usual with the "please press ctrl-alt-del to logon" screen.  When that key combination is hit, the info screen is gone, but the "User
logon box" never appears.  By never, I mean it doesn't appear within 2-5 minutes, and the users tend to hard reboot their computers (generally leading to more problems).
I've read that this can be caused by a variety of issues, such as DNS, cable, speed negotiation with the switch port, etc.  However, I am interested in learning if I can use xperfmgr to determine the issue.
From my testing, the ETL is only written once a user logs on to the system.
The invocation I used is as follows:
    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Performance Toolkit\xbootmgr.exe" -trace boot -traceflags base+latency+dispatcher -stackwalk profile+cswitch+readythread -notraceflagsinfilename -postbootdelay 10 -nopopups -resultPath C:\Boot_Trace
Is it possible to use xbootmgr to measure this situation?
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hi,
Yes, this tool could to be used to record the boot information.
    Let's make clear something below.
    1. Could you see this screen after pressing "Ctrl+Alt+Delete":
    2. Did you mean that the password inbox disappear?
    3. Could you see above login screen when you start the computer normally?
If all is Ok when you start computer, the xbootmgr.exe - trace boot is not applied.
    Meanwhile, go to  Clean Boot
to see if there is some third-party software to troubleshoot.

  • Disable Window keys ALT+TAB, CTRL+ALT+DEL

Hello i am developing an application in which i need to catch the ALT+TAB and CTRLALT+DEL key events and handle it in my own way.
The default action of showing the next window or the task manager should not take place.
In the event handler i have given
    eventName.consume();
also. But the default handling is also done.
How do i stop the default action from being done?

Windows will not allow any application to catch the CTRL+ALT+DEL keystroke. In Windows NT-kernel OSes, this keystroke brings up a menu which, among other things, allows the user to change his or her password. If an application could intercept CTRL+ALT+DEL, it could present itself in such a way as to look just like that dialog. Then, if a user typed his or her password into that dialog, the program could log or transmit that password plaintext, severely violating security.
All sorts of exploits like that would be possible. This is why you can't block system keystrokes.
Is there any particular reason you need to override this behavior? Perhaps we can help you find another solution to whatever problem made you decide you wanted to catch those keystrokes in the first place.
