OK to disable dhcpcd and use NetworkManager?

After a lot of research and testing, I came to the conclusion that NetworkManager will conflict with dhcpcd no matter what I do, no matter what configuration I try. Disabling dhcpcd, however, fixes everything related to my wired and VPN connections.
Is it really possible that NetworkManager wants to be the King of the Hill and deal with dhcpd stuff by itself? Is there any security issues using it alone with the dhcpcd module disabled?

There is a lot of ambiguity in this thread.  Armadillo is referring to loading/unloading a dhcpcd module (there is no such thing!), fungle seems to be referring to installation/removal of packages for dhcpcd or dhclient, and cju is referring to enabling/disabling systemd services.
Armadillo, what are you actually asking?  As mentioned, there is no module to load or unload.  You do need the dhcpcd or dhclient packages installed as NetworkManager will use one of them.  And that is the point: NetworkManager will call dhcpcd.
As all the networking wiki pages say, you should have only one networking service enabled.  So if you've enabled NetworkManager, not only is it ok to disable dhcpcd, you are expected to - NetworkManager will not work properly with the dhcpcd service also enabled.
Actually, I think I mixed up two things: modprobe and systemctl. What I do is just "systemctl disable dhcpcd" so that I can enable NetworkManager in the same way, otherwise it won't work if dhcpcd is enabled. This is, for what I could see, not a kernel module, but a system service or daemon.
Well, it was almost 4am, I'm guilty.
I don't remove the dhcpcd package at all, I just stop/disable it with systemctl.
EDIT:
ooo wrote:you can disable dhcpcd systemd service if using networkmanager. Actually you probably shouldn't have dhcpcd service enabled if using networkmanager.
networkmanager will use either dhcpcd or dhclient for retrieving your ip address, so having separate service for dhc* will probably only mess things up.
Thank you. I can sleep again

  • Would like to disable HTTP and use only HTTPS yet I get side effects

    Hello,
I have established a secure connection between the AS ABAP and AS Java.
I would like assure that all communication between the servers is using https and for that, as a test, I have deactivated the http service using SMICM transaction.
The only side effect I could recognize so far is that the Web Dynpro for ABAP stuff doesn't work through transaction SE80, the working area simply doesn't come up. If I activate HTTP again it is working.
Am I doing the right thing by disabling HTTP completely and if yes, what else do I need to do in order to prevent this side effect from happening?

I have other cards that are the same age or older so should not majorly affect AaoA. Thoughts? I know some will say don't close cards, but they're store cards and I don't need to be responsible for store cards I don't use.If you have no use for them and don't foresee using them in the future then you should probably close them out.  They won't affect your AAoA as the cards will stay in your reports for 10 years.  No sense in keeping cards that you don't want just to take up room in your sock drawer.

  • Running Lion 10.7.5, how to disable sslv2 and use only RC4 ciphers to solve vulnerability found in PCI compliance vulnerability scan.

This is what the scan report told me to do. Is this even a problem that can be solved in a browser? I have akamai installed on my mac and they say that may be giving a false problem concerning the sslv2. I have no idea how to change the ciphers used.

ATT says the modem for household use that I have cannot be configured to use the more secure CR4 cipher and disable sslv2 settings. Says I need to get a modem designed for business network use. What a nightmare. All I do is go to a pay gateway website and enter in my customer's credit card numbers, which then is deposited into my bank account. Seems this is the same as any credit card purchase I would make online and that ATT should have security for those transactions covered already. The pay gateway site does use CR4, but the scan has failed me because apparently my modem does not. I am not operating an e-commerce website. (I meant to say false POSITIVE in my question above, not false problem.)

    Hello Everyone,
Initially, for the material master creation. we used ZMMH1 during the update in LSMW now the business wants me to remove the ZMMH1 and provide BMMH1 in the structure relationships... Any idea as to how this can be done?

I Tried it... before but it is Not working, it says " No Source structure is assigned to target structure ZMMH1".
Well, Eventhough I create a new one using Direct Input by using the object 00020 ( Material master), the structure is displayed with ZMMH1 instead of BMMH1.

and there is no update availabe for my handset at the moment

It sounds like you are using an unsupported App like "Jailbreak" which technically voids the warranty on your iPhone. Your call on that.
If so, the app creates an "ad hoc" wireless network which the Airport Express cannot join or participate in. So, you cannot use both the AirPort Express and the "modem" function of your iPhone at the same time.
You should be able to turn the app off and log off the internet, and then setup another separate wireless network to run AirTunes, or AirPlay. But, you'll have to "switch" wireless networks to be able to do this and the network will of course not have access to the Internet.

I no longer use Skype, so I cannot test Skype's claims, but http://www.skype.com/go/help should best be able to help you use their product with your system.
I found this page http://www.skype.com/help/guides/skypeformac/skypefeatures/video.html that seems to address your specific question. The picture on that page shows that you should be able to select among connected cameras from the "Camera:" choices bar in Skype > Preferences > Video:
Of course, if you have only one compatible camera connected, only the one choice will show.
Use the latest version of Skype that is compatible with your system. If camera selection works as explained in the Skype Help page, there should be no need to "disable the iSight camera."

  • Option to Disable 4G on Q10 (and use 3G in lieu)

The new iphone 5 has an option to disable 4G and allow the phone to work in 3G mode.  This disable button can be helpful for situations when the 4G service is weak.
I work in midtown Manhattan and the 4G/LTE service is weak in both my office and my commuting hub (Port Authority).  Because the radio on the phone can find a whiff of 4G, it meakly attempts to use that to no avail.  Emails get stuck in outbox, searching for webpages goes nowhere and the phone thinks there is no connection.
This is clearly a 4G issue.  My old BB never had a problem with this.  My friends who can disable their 4G do so for situations such as mine.
I spoke to the folks at BlackBerry and they said this was a "carrier decision" not to have a network connection listed as "3G only" in the Network Technology section of the Mobile Network.  They told me other carriers did offer such an option.
When I spoke the tech support team at Verizon, they said a software update would need to be implemented to allow this "feature."
I understand that us BB users are akin to unicorns.  However, those of us who use them like the new technology.
I strongly urge the Verizon customer support team to implement the software update that would allow Q10/Z10 users the ability to turn off the 4G.  It would be the fair and right thing to do.
The favor of a Verizon response is requested.
    Thank you.

    Hi JonathanK-
Maybe you misread my post? In it I mentioned that I work in midtown Manhattan and commute through the Port Authority.
To be specific though, the office zip code is 10017 (a block from Grand Central Terminal, another large commuting hub). The zip code for the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT) is 10018 (625 8th Ave., NY, NY).
BlackBerry specifically told me that Verizon is the blockage to a switch on my Q10 that would allow me to turn off 4G. Is that inaccurate?
If so, I would like to schedule a conference call between your team and the BlackBerry team to get to the bottom of this.
Thank you, in advance, for your assistance with this matter.

  • Is there a way to disable the Facetime camera and use an external USB webcam for browser based webchat?

Is it possible to disable the Facetime camera and use an external webcam as a default? So that when you access browser based applications that require a webcam it doesnt default to the Facetime camera but uses the USB webcam instead?
    Cheers.

    (1) You don't need to "disable" anything to select among cameras connected to your Mac.
For all cameras you access via browser based applications (cameras connect via Flash browser plugins), control-click on an open video window in your browser page and adjust the camera settings to select between a connected USB and Firewire video camera.  Specific instructions are here:
       http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/help04.html
If you don't see a choices of cameras in the Flash settings, your Mac is only recognizing one camera.  Verify that your external cam is Mac-compatible and properly connected.
Your choice is stored in preferences so the same camera will activate on the next browser page until you change it.
    (2) BTW, a current (Feb 2013) discussion of how to select among connected Mac cameras for a few more apps is available here:  http://discussions.apple.com/message/21158673#21158673

How do you disable "FILE IN USE" pop-ups so you can actually edit and delete PDFs?!
I continue to have a pop saying that either the file in open somewhere in the serve- which it is not- and I cannot delete a particular pdf or edit it.
It's incredibly frustrating and in the end I end up having four files with different names because it won't let me edit the original file!!!!

  • Is there any way to disable Quick Find and use the old VS 2010 find?

I really dislike the Quick Find dialog. It's one of the few tools from the VS 2010 Productivity Pack that I always disabled. It looks like they've forced it on us with 2012 though, so I'm wondering if there's a way to disable Quick Find and use the old
    style Find dialog?

I wish the VS2012 devs would realize just how badly the Quick Find tool slows me down. It's poorly labelled, does a full search immediately after every single keystroke, and doesn't default to whatever's highlighted in the code when invoked. It
makes me feel like I'm the only one who uses the product.
    I agree with ElectricNinja and
Disable Quick Find in VS 2012
The quick find is terrible, and was one of the few tools that I'd disable in the 2010 pack.  wish there was a way to return to the good old normal find.
