OK to re-install old battery?

I recently purchased a new battery for my iBook G4. Based on some postings I saw on this discussion board re: how to prolong battery life, I've started removing my new battery whenever I've got the computer plugged into the wall. But, since these batteries have a little non-skid pad on them the computer slides around when the battery opening on the bottom of the computer is not filled in. So, I'd like to put my old battery back into the computer whenever I don't need battery power...just to stabilize the computer physically on my desk. Thus, my question: is it OK to re-install the old battery periodically? Will this slow/damage the computer's functioning in any way? (The old battery was purchased in 2004 and only holds a charge for 4 minutes.)

Duane...thanks for the quick reply and the welcome!
So, perhaps I misunderstood earlier posts. I was under the impression that leaving the computer plugged into the wall while the battery is fully charged is bad for the battery. In that case, it seems to me that there are only a few options: always using battery power or taking the battery out when it's not needed. I'd love to be wrong here, because constantly removing and re-installing the battery is a real pain.

  • New Apple battery for macbook only lasting half as long as my old battery.

I'm having a bit of trouble here. Last month a family member needed to leave on an emergency trip but was having battery problems and didn't have time to get a new battery before catching her flight, so I gave her mine and a day or two later went to the apple store and bought a new OEM apple battery for myself. I believe that the old battery had around 80-90% left in its life and performance from the way it would act. Unfortunately this new battery would not interface with the computer at first. I followed the apple page battery troubleshooting recommendations and ended up resetting my power service manager (sorry if I'm butchering the name here) by removing the power sources and holding the power button for 5 seconds. It fixed the interface problems and the computer now recognizes the battery just fine. However, the battery life on this new battery is pretty poor. I only get about 60 minutes of youtube video watching out of it before its done (no other applications running), or about 100 minutes of general non-streaming use. My old battery was at least double this, if not more. Does anyone have any ideas where I should look next? Here is some battery information that might help:
    Model Information:
    Manufacturer: DP
    Device name: ASMB016
    Pack Lot Code: 0002
    PCB Lot Code: 0000
    Firmware Version: 0110
    Hardware Revision: 0500
    Cell Revision: 0200
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 626
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 4935
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 9
    Condition: Normal
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): -1437

Many thanks if anyone has an idea what I should do to help fix this. My Macbook has been great other than this one issue.

  • Satellite A100- New or Old Battery is not charging

    Hi,
    I have a Satellite A100-543 (PSAARE).
The original battery was not charging so I purchased a new one. Now the new one is not charging either. I then ordered a new charger before coming to this forum so Ill test that when it arrives but I think the problem will not be solved.
With the new Battery the Icon says "10% Usable, connected, charging". The Icon, when the laptop is first switched on, shows the charge bar moving (charging) but after a few moments stops.
With the old Battery the Icon says " connected, charging". It shows empty.
In both cases the Battery Green LED is on.
If I pull out the charger from the laptop the computer stops immediately.
Trawling the forums I see one proposed solution is a BIOS upgrade. I have BIOS version 5.80
    See: http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2006/05/23/toshiba-satellite-a105-battery-charging-problem/comment-page-19/#comment-151154
However I cannot find my model (as above) on Toshiba's list! It was purchased in France and is out of warranty.
Again I am dubious than this will solve the problem.
Others point to the motherboard. How can I know this? If it is does anybody have an idea of cost?
I do hope that someone can help.
    Henry

I'm not going to immediately help but I think I have the same problem on my A200 Equium model 1V0, running Vista.
Existing battery has gone down to 5% power and of course I get warnings so I run on mains but I can run the laptop on the battery for a few minutes.
The charging light comes on for about 9 seconds and then goes out. The charging status changes from "on mains power, charging 5%" to "on mains power, not charging".
It's odd that I can flip the battery out while the mains is attached and when I re-insert it, there's a charging light and charging status is ok for 9 seconds. If I do this often enough I can boost the battery to 10% but then the charging light only flickers on for a moment and there's no further actual charging. I think the main board charging circuit can't handle any more than a small feedback charge.
I bought a new battery - the laptop won't run on this without mains power (in fact the charging light now only appears for a moment and no charging at all takes place).
I uninstalled and re-installed the power ACPI from device manager - no change.
I turned off laptop, removed battery and mains power and held down the power button for 15 seconds - no change.
I checked my mains adapter using a circuit tester - OK.
Oh, and I updated the BIOS to the latest version 2.5 - no change.
It looks like the main board charging circuit has a fault which is uneconomical to repair.
Unless someone out there knows differently??

  • Install old iLife from 10.3 disks onto iBook w/ a clean install of Tiger?

My ibook originally came with Panther 10.3. iLife was included on the install disks.
A few months ago, I did a clean install of Tiger. I then tried to reinstall iLife from the Panther 10.3 disks. However, only Garageband and iDVD show up ---iPhoto and iMovie don't show up at all. I've searched for these programs, but they are not installed.
I spoke to an apple rep and he said that I should NEVER install old programs from a Panther disk onto a clean install of Tiger. However, the guy did not seem confident in what he told me. He said my mac should be very unstable and that I shouldn't even be able to use Garageband....but I have had no problems with my mac or using Garageband for the past 4 months.
Is he correct? And if so, should I do a clean install of Panther, and then upgrade to Tiger? I wonder if this will correctly install the whole iLife suite?

  • How do I install the battery on my new laptop

I don't know how to install the battery

    Hello Littlegogi,
    Welcome at the HP forums,
You can install the battery by inserting it into the back of the Notebook.
Turn your notebook upside down (Place it on something soft to avoid scratches.)
Now on the back of the notebook there is a "hole" were the battery should fit into.
    Is this what you requested?
If you can give me the exact product number I can provide you the service manual.
If you do not know where you can find this number I suggest that you click on the following link:

  • Installing Old Plug-ins into CS5

Is it possible to install old plug-ins (plugins) into Adobe Photoshop CS5?
I have tried a couple of my old plug-ins and could not get any to show up under the Filters menu.
    I installed to:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins
I tried installing Noise Ninja 2.3.2.
I tried installing Kodak GEM AIR Pro.
    I tried installing Phototune SkinTun.
No luck with any of them.
I also tried installing a couple to
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 Bit)\Plug-ins\Filters

No one is likely to have a FIX, per se.
32 bit plug-ins only work with 32 bit Photoshop, while only 64 bit plug-ins work with 64 bit Photoshop.  I suspect the 32/64 bit mismatch may be at the root of the problem you're seeing, Hawaii-geek.
Plug-ins generally need to be installed in the new version of Photoshop.
For 32 bit plugins, maybe, just MAYBE, for an individual plugin you can find a way to copy the proper file(s) so that Photoshop CS5 will find them under its OWN Plug-ins subfolder.  Photoshop enumerates plugins it finds there when it first starts.  But this is not a given as a plug-in may set up things other than just the files when it is installed.
The one thing to remember is that you ABSOLUTELY MUST NOT point the "Extra Plug-ins Folder" at the Plug-ins folder of an old Photoshop installation.  Doing so will mix plugins supplied with the older Photoshop version with your new Photoshop version, and this WILL cause you problems.
HangtownGal is using that feature right.  For simple one-file plugins, you should be able to point every version of Photoshop to a common separate plug-ins folder, but keep in mind the 32 vs. 64 bit issue I mentioned above.  As Chris states, 32 bit Photoshop will only load 32 bit plug-ins, and 64 bit Photoshop will only load 64 bit plug-ins (which are reasonably rare still).  And keep in mind more complex plugins often are sets of files that are sometimes copied to a number of different places in the Photoshop installation area.
Why is it you think someone else needs to FIX this problem?
Did you not keep the installation package and/or instructions you got with your old plugins?  For those that cannot be installed into a Photoshop version that didn't even exist when they were released, have you checked to see if there are updates available from the plugin manufacturers?  You may very well have to pay to upgrade these.  You paid to upgrade Photoshop, so is that a problem?

  • Installing old Photoshop Elements on a new computer

I have an old version of Photoshop Elements and a new MAC. It was previously installed on my PC which crashed. But the new MAC won't let me install this software - it tells me there is an error with the install.

OK... so this is an OLD version - it is 4.0 (2006). My MAC is running OS X Version 10.8.2. The installation begins and some of the files begin installing then it quits and the message reads: "The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
    Thanks

I know that in Mac OS X one can pick which library to use by holding down the option key while starting iTunes. What's the Windows equivalent?
    Press the Shift key.
WIll the fact that the music is now on another physical drive make a difference
    No.
I know the previous install is at least 7.0, but I have no idea about which point release.
Try checking the content of the iTunes Music Library.xml file.
Finally, what's the expected behaviour (or required procedure) with respect to reauthorization of this computer to use the same ITMS-purchased files?
You will be asked to reauthorize the computer.

  • Should I continue using the old battery? Even though I got a new ONE?

The apple guy have just delivered my new PB 12" battery; I am however thinking of keeping / or not using it for the meantine since I am not using my PB on mobile. I mean, there is no need to unplug it from the power source; The old battery still charges to 100% but shutsdown at 80%. Here are some of my questions:
    - Do I need to calibrate my new battery eventhough I dont intend to use it now? Or shall I leave it in the box since I don't need it yet.
    - Would it be wise not to use my new battery? I am just afraid to buy again a new after several months. Though I know it is kinda stupid not to use it now after I bought it.
    - What would I do with my old battery? it still work for several minutes...(should i use both alternately to prolong the life of my new battery?)
    TIPS TIPS, please. Thanks
What I am sure of, is I need to used this new battery as its warranty last for only a year...
    Cheers TO ALL!

  • Keeping old battery in pismo or new battery when on the ac adapter?

I have a pismo that has a fairly new battery in it. Most of the time, I have the pismo plugged into an AC adapter.
I still have the old battery that has a little bit of charge left in it. Therefore, my question is this:
Should I leave the new battery in the pismo with the machine plugged into the wall? Or, should I charge the new battery until it is full and then take it out of the pismo and store it somewhere and put the old battery in the pismo while I have it connected to the AC adapter?
thanks in advance for any answers

First of all, the charge circuitry will never overcharge the battery no matter how long you keep your PowerBook's AC adapter plugged in.
Nevertheless frequent recharging of the battery will reduce its life. If this happens a lot on your machine (which can be told by the battery icon in the menu bar showing a lightning bolt instead of a plug) then swapping in the old battery while working on AC power for prolonged periods may help.
However, more recent batteries and/or power managers are a bit smarter. When running on AC power, they wait for the battery charge to drop to 95% and only then recharge to 100%. If yours works this way, then you don't need to worry about it too much.
It is much more important for any lithium ion battery to be 'trained' (i.e. discharged from 100% to 0% and then recharged back to 100%) about once a month in order to retain its health. See Apple's [battery page|http://www.apple.com/batteries>.

how to install old softwere to my ipod tuch 2??

What do you mean by older software?
If you mean that some apps that were compatible with your 2G were updated and version currently in the App store are not longer available, the only way to get those apps to work is to:
    - Obtain a newer model iPod.
    - If you have a version on your computer such as in a computer file backup that you can restore to your iTunes library and sync to the iPod. You can only obtain the current version from the App store.

  • Using old battery as backup

Just wondering if I can use an old powerbook battery that only has 12% of original capacity when I have the laptop plugged in, (to save the good battery) and only use the good battery when I decide to use the laptop off main power? Or will this screw up the computer's battery management system. I know that we have to do routine drains so the computer has a way to determine the full capacity of the battery, will this get screwed up if I keep changing batteries? Is there anything else that I haven't thought of that I need to be concerned about regarding using this old battery?
Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

You should be fine doing that, just don't store the good battery at 100% (or zero %). 50-70% is a good range in which to store.
    Long Term Storage
If you don’t plan on using your notebook for more than six months, Apple recommends that you remove and store the battery with a 50% charge. If you store a battery when it’s fully discharged, it could fall into a deep discharge state, which renders it incapable of holding any charge. Conversely, if you store it fully charged for an extended period of time, the battery may experience some loss of battery capacity, meaning it will have a shorter life. Be sure to store the ejected battery at the proper temperature. (See “Notebook Temperate Zone.”)
