OK to shoot gray card in JPEG?

I mistakenly posted this q in the general Windows forum but would really like the opinion of those in the ACR forum.
I'm going on a trip shortly in which I'll be shooting lots of RAW photos in different locations. Is it OK to take my gray card shots in JPEG to save some memory, since ACR can now work with that format? Just wanted to make sure there's no adverse effect of setting white balance in RAW shots from a gray card shot in JPEG.

No. You cannot transfer white balance adjustments between JPEG and raw files.

  • Shooting in Raw and JPEG

    Hi,
I am really new to Elements, and am having trouble using the Editor!
My camera shoots in Raw and JPEG (Sony A100), so I have to go through one by one and delete the JPEGs after uploading. I have looked at all of the Help function in Elements, and can't find a way to delete the JPEGs as I upload them, without having to do it the long way!
Can anyone suggest a quick way around?
    Thanks v much

I tend to disagree with the statements about the Downloader. In terms of resources it consumes they are neglibible - 8Mbytes from total system memory of 1Gbyte in my case. They are not active until invoked.
I have found no easier way than using the Adobe Downloader once setup.
    1. Plug card into reader
    2. Click on Get Photos
It also allows me to choose which Adobe Program the download should be to.
I can't see that using Windows Explorer is more efficient.
    1. Open Explorer
    2. Set up Folder
    3. Drag and drop images from reader
    4. Startup Elements
    5. Get Photos
However, as always the choice is ours and should be whatever we're comfortable with.

  • I want to use a gray card shot in ACR to multiple photos. Poss into the Elements or  only in PS?

I want to click the grey card photo in ACR 7.3. of Elements, an then apply it to multiple Photos there.
Is that possible in Elemements or only in Photoshop's ACR?

Thanks, but just this it was I‘d done – to click my RAW files, select open in Windwos Explorer – and ACR opens – but only with first selectet file. I’m missing the fim stripe on the left site….thats the Problem. All selected files are imported into ACR, but I only see the full size image of the at first selectet file. Breaking the prozess…I see one after the other selectet filed disappearing . The were open, but not shown as a filstripe…that’s the problem

  • Standardizing exposure across multiple images using a gray card

    Hi,
I am studying chest feather coloration in Barn Swallows, and take pictures of swallow chests against a white background with gridlines, while always including a gray card in the image. In order to evaluate chest color between birds, the lighting, exposure and white balance for all images must be identical.
I place my tripod in the shade whenever possible and set exposure manually (using the spot meter on a D200) to be 2 stops underexposed, and use fill flash to provide the bulk of the light. This gives me even lighting, but because of the automative flash exposure adjustment, each photo has slightly different luminance.
I was under the impression that adjusting exposure would be a snap by clicking on the gray card in each image and telling my software to adjust it to 18% reflectance. However, Lightroom does not seem have such a feature. This seems very strange given how frequently one is instructed to standardize exposure with a gray card.
Adding to the problem is that my gray card (from Delta) has a lot of microscopic variation in its surface in brightness (and hue). While Lightroom gives me a white balance adjustment eye dropper, it seems to be limited to sampling one pixel, rather than averaging values over a number of pixels. Because of the limitations of my gray card, Lightroom's white balance eye dropper is of little use, as the white balance vary dramatically depending on which pixel on the gray card I sample. Is there a way to change the size of the area sampled for white balance purposes?
    Thanks much,
    Gernot

    Gernot,
I think the thing to do is to use a consistent setup, which means no TTL on the flash and a set distance from the subject, and minimise ambient light effects (small aperture).
Alternatively you could photograph a "colourchecker" with each bird and use a calibration script on the raw files to sort out the settings each time - a bit lengthy though, expect about 20 minutes a time. However, it would be quite definitive.
As far as the "single point" problem goes, you could set all the noise sliders to the max to blur out the imperfections in the card, take a sample, then undo the noise corrections.
I can't help thinking that for reference work like this, Photoshop is the tool for the job and LR will help you get organised into PS, but it won't replace it.

  • Using a gray card

If you use a gray card in your image to determine your white balance, how do you apply the correct white balance/color balance to other images that don't have the gray card in the shot?
    thanks.
    russ
    altadena, ca

192,192, 192 is the same gray as a gray card. If all images are shot the same. make your adjustments on the image with the gray card so the gray card reads 192, 192, 192 and apply those corrections to all your images.

  • Is the Kodak Gray card "spectrally neutral"?

Does anyone know if the Kodak R-27 18% gray card is spectrally neutral? How about when lit with different illuminants? Would it be appropriate for setting WB in ACR?
I'm more interested in actual measurements or well-documented articles than opinions.
    Thanks, Lou

Jeff Schewe wrote: He's wrong...simple as that. An 18% graycard is too dark to be used optimally for white balance. There's a reason why it's called "white balance". You want to have the balance determine much further up the tone scale than a middle gray. The second to the lightest (or even the lightest if the exposure is down a bit) patch is what was used to develop the Camera Raw White Balance tool. It's foolish to ignore that...
You shouldn't use the N1 patch (brighest patch) of the ColorChecker, since it is not spectrally neutral. It is difficult to produce paint that is spectrally neutral at that reflection density. See Bruce Lindbloom's Color Checker Calculator for typical values. The remaining patches are pretty neutral. N2 is best for white balance, since the camera will collect more photons and the signal:noise will be better. If the camera has good noise characteristics, a good white balance at base ISO can be obtained from the N4 square, which is midgray (L* = 51). However, at high ISO or with cameras with worse S:N the WB may not be optimal.
For example, with the Nikon D3 at base ISO (200), here is the white balance from N4 (patch 22). The RGB values for the neutral patches are shown in the ACR readout at the top.
Here are the results for N2, patch 20:
    N1 (patch 19):
    And N6 (patch 24):
With the exception of WB with N1 (which is not specrtally neutral), the RBG values are very close at all levels when WB is performed with the other patches.
I don't have a spectrophotometer to read my Kodak gray card, but gray balancing on this card produces suboptimal results as shown here:

  • Color correcting using gray card & FCP6?

with still photography, I can color correct rather quickly using a WhiBal card from http://www.rawworkflow.com/products/whibal/index.html .
Is it possible do perform some rudimentary correction using this with FCP6 - until I add the other pieces of equipment I'll need to do it properly.
I've got an Gretag Macbeth Eye-One monitor calibrator
    http://www.rawworkflow.com/products/gmb/eye-one_display2.html
and I was hoping to limp along for a bit.
What would the workflow look like in FCP6 if this is possible?

    Use your 3-way color corrector.
Click the eyedropper for the WHITES and select the white
Click the eyedropper for the MIDS and select a gray
Click the eyedropper for the BLACKS and select a black.
    That will get you matched.
    Good luck,

  • Trouble shooting sd cards

Okay got my new palm and that got a two gig sd card to go with it never had anything in there before that with the exception of the blank.  tunred on my palm and insertd the card, and nothing happened never got the warning beep or anything.  Checked the sound and went into the card application on the palm to try and find it manualy.  Can't get my palm to read that card or other cards that I have tried.  wondering if anyone knew what was going on becasue I don't think this would be a constuction problem as the card works in the computer and there is another thing on the palm that I can't figure/get to work and i don't think that there would be two things wrong with it.
    thanks

  • Getting rid of gray border around jpeg overlay?

I have an imported jpeg image as my main image. I am overlaying another jpeg image logo. Around the logo is a grey border that is not in the image as it stands alone.  What is that and how do I get rid of it?
    Thanks

If you don't have Photoshop, Preview has an "Instant Alpha" feature... Just press and drag your mouse, then hit delete. Save as a PNG/PSD/TIFF, etc...

  • The shooting speed with the continuous shooting can be affected if I shoot jpeg, raw or raw + jpeg.

Hallo, I am using a Canon EOS 6D. In the specifications it is stated that the speed when doing the continuous shooting is 4.5 fps. I wonder if this speed changes depending on the setting regarding on how I save data on the card (raw, jpeg, raw+jpeg). Or it is ALWAYS 4.5 no matter how I save the data ?
    Thanks

My interpretation of the spec is that it specifies how many FPS it can shoot when in good light with a good lens & it doesn't care about the file structure saved. That file goes into the buffer as the camera continues shooting & that becomes the limiting factor on HOW MANY shots you can take before the camera stops firing. A faster card helps a bit but transfer speed is really the limiting factor once the buffer starts to fill. From experience cameras writing to dual cards are slower than if instructed to only write to the CF card.

  • HT4101 downloading only JPEG files using SD card reader

I am new to Apple-iPad world,, mostly working on WinXP.
I am looking to buy a tablet to view photos while I'm on vacation and traveling. I shoot both RAW and JPEG files of each image. When I connect my SD card to an iPad Mini, I'd like to be able to download only the JPEG files, since the RAW files are too large and would quickly fill up my device.
I've been told that when you plug in the Apple SD card reader, it treats the RAW and JPEG files of an image as one, so when you download you have no choice to just select the JPEGs. Seems like a huge oversight on Apple's part, to offer camera and card connection, but then be so controlling about it, that it doesn't work for people. None of the 3-4 Apple sales reps I've spoken to know of a way around this.
At this point, I'm lookng at an Android tablet instead, since it doesn't have this limiting feature--though I much prefer the look and size of the iPad Mini screen.  .
Has anyone else run into this issue? Any thoughts on a work-around?
(Two solutions that I've thought of--though I don't know if they will work--are: 1) download all of the images, then bring them up in a program like Snapseed, where I can save (really a 'save as') a new JPEG version of my image, then delete the original files that I downloaded, or 2) see if I can download a file manager app that would let me view the different files by size and by type (to identify the RAW files), then delete just these from me iPad)
    Best, David.

Thanks Tom, at last an answer!
So it seems I would need to first download the image files to my tablet--including RAW files--(or whatever the constraits are in working with the Apple SD card reader), and then after the fact, use PMP to delete just the RAW files.
I assume then that PMP can view the 'standard' photo folders (called 'Albums on my iPod) created by the Apple photo app (or by the iOS, I'm not sure), is that correct?
This might be an acceptable work-around for me.
    Best, David.

  • Some photos on iphone arent showing up, a gray jpeg image shows up instead

Ever since the last update some of my photos dont show up in my album or photo stream.
Recent photo shows up but slightly older (a week or two) instead show a gray image with "jpeg" written on it. Even when I enlarge the image it doesnt show up, jus tthe gray box.
    Thanks!

    Nathan,
I'm definitely using IMAP -- that's all I use so my mail is accessible no matter where I am. Also, all my other messages are on both computers and if the iPhone were set to POP some how, they would not have downloaded to the second machine, I'm pretty sure (unless I had told the iPhone somehow to keep the messages on the server which, as far as I can, see is not an option -- at least as currently configured).
The last time this happened I could not find the missing message anywhere on my laptop. This time I actually did find the message in my Trash on my laptop even though it was still in Inbox on my iPhone.
I don't know how often this is happening but I happened to catch it last night because last night I was traveling and some mail collected while I was on the road. My laptop was off and as soon as we arrived I took the dogs for a walk. While walking, I checked my mail on my iPhone and saw a message that needed a detailed reply. As soon as I got back home, I booted my laptop and the first thing I did was go looking for this message and I couldn't find it. If I hadn't been looking for it, would I have noticed it was missing? Maybe not, if I had already replied via the iPhone.
BTW, the unread messages before and after the message were retrieved by my laptop, just not the one I read.
    Thoughts?

  • Unable to transfer photos (jpeg) from desktop to SD card.  Appears as if successful then does not show up when put SD card in camera.

Unable to transfer photos (jpeg) from desktop to SD card for Cannon Power shot camera.
Appears as if successful, jpegs show up in SD card window,  but they do not  show up when I put SD card in camera.
Go through entire process to no avail.  SD card is not locked.
    Thank You
    L

    Ahh, extra info ahead...
Pictures on SD card, SanDisc-SDHC, 4GB Card, are jpeg.  The ones I would like to put on the card are jpeg as well.
    SD format MS-DOS (FAT32) .
    3.876 GB available on card.
    I have
Exported the pics from iPhoto to the desktop. Inserted sd card into side of iMac.  The icon of card popped up.
    Attempts to no avail:
    1)   Dragged the photos to the disk icon for the sd card.
    2)   Dragged pictures into the DCIM folder (where all photos taken on camera resided).
    3)   Created new folder.  Put photos from desktop into folder and dragged ne folder inside DCIM -since pictures taken at different times had their own folders inside the DCIM folder.
Every time the photos/files end up showing up on the sd card as long as it is in my computer but when ejected and inserted into my camera, all imported photos/jpeg file are gone.

  • Nikon D7100 Import using both card slots Raw + JPEG

I have a Nikon D7100 with the card slots allocated  for Raw (Slot 1) and JPEG (slot 2). When Importing I would like to convert the raw images in slot 1 to the Adobe DNG format and to have the JPEG images simply imported as JPEGs. I cannot find the correct combinations of preferences/options to make this happen. What happens today is the both images import with the second labeled as a -2 copy of the first image. Suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks Ron K.

I found the magic combination of settings. Not only must the camera settings be set to raw (card 1) + Jpeg (card 2) but the quality needs to be set to raw + jpeg (fine, normal, or low).
This places the jpeg image on card #2 and is imported as a proper jpeg.
    Hope this helps others.

  • RAW to JPEG Coloring Porblem

I have a problem with the coloring of my images when I convert my images from RAW to JPEG. I work with a professional photographer on the weekends doing weddings and when doing so, I always use the RAW format. I use his cards since it is his business and he edits the pictures. I recieve a copy of the final product of the pictures he gives the bride in JPEG and then a copy of all the pictures that I took in the RAW format. I had been using JPEG until I played around with the RAW pictures in photoshop and realized how much more you can do with the pictures.
Anyway, I've been running into a problem. I downloaded all the programs for RAW files so I can view them, etc. I can view them perfectly, open them with photoshop perfectly, and edit them perfectly. The problem occurs when I convert the RAW picture in photoshop to a JPEG. The picture completely looses all color and saturation. It gets the dull and grey look. If it is a shot of a person, their skin looks grey and green. However, if I reopen that file as a JPEG in photoshop, it shows up in perfect color. It's perfect if its opened in photoshop but looks terrible in JPEG. If I shoot in JPEG to begin with, the color is fine no matter what. I love shooting in RAW though because there is so much more you can do.
I've done everything I can think of doing. I experimented myself and made the picture extremelly saturated and the colors overly bright but even then, photoshop still converts the RAW image to a gross looking JPEG. I sent a copy of the gross looking JPEG to a friend's compter to see if my computer had just distorted the color but even on her computer, it still wasn't right. I went to the professional that I work with and I pulled my images up on there. I showed him the nice RAW image and the crappy JPEG. On his computer, the JPEG was still wrong. He opened the RAW file and his computer in photoshop and saved it as a JPEG on his computer and it saved it perfectly. He didn't know when my computer was messing it up. He said it obviously wan'y my camera and was something with my computer or photoshop. We both have Photoshop CS2 so I compared the color settings and preferences but they were all the same. I also take classes at a photo center and my teacher's computer worked as perfectly as the professional's. My computer is not old at all. My brother is a computer engineer and knows everything. He just re-did my computer a few days ago (updated it, got rid of any viruses, etc.) and he put on the new Photoshop CS3. I was hoping that this would help me out but it's still the same problem. I jsut want to know why the color gets messed up when I convert a RAW picture to a JPEG. Thank you!

    A) It sounds like you are using a Nikon camera... hence the green problem... although I have seen some Canon slime too... Do you control the color white balance with a good gray card when you shoot?
    B) It sounds like you are working on the files until they look good on your monitor but then...
B.1) your monitor is not calibrated to a non equipment based standard like Adobe 1998 so the out put doesn't hold for the next step
    or
B.2) you are not embedding a profile (sRGB or Adobe 1998 or other equipment based profile) to provide instructions for your software and hardware to know where black and white and neutral gray are so they can render the photo correctly... no instructions (aka profile) equals unpredictable color from one step to another...
    C) Maybe you have the camera on one color profile and photoshop on another but you still aren't embedding when you save the file?
