Ok to use Dolby 1/0 mono??

I have a few captures of analog 8mm mono camcorder tapes. I made a mistake during the transfer process by not using an audio Y-cable between the playback camcorder and my capture box. As a result the captured files only have one channel of audio. I don't need to do any editing of the captured files, just going to burn straight to DVD. So I've always just used the capture files straight into Compressor, mark my In/Out points and produce the encoded files for DVDSP. Does anyone know if I select the Dobly 1/0 setting for the encode will that essentially create a mono version of the audio and avoid having the DVD playback in only 1 channel?
Thanks,
Chris

If you're concerned about playback - in that audio will only play on, say, the left-hand TV speaker - you needn't worry, 1.0 only means there is no distinct info for what goes to the left or right speaker. In less geeky terms, the DVD player will feed each channel the mono track, downmixing appropriately (-3dB, I believe).
Still, it's always a good idea to confirm that your Dolby audio is playing back correctly in DVDSP (or Compressor) after you've encoded.

= Appreciate the help guys, the default audio device was already set on speakers, just in case I switched around a couple of times, but to no avail. I had a good look though quite a few of the suggestions on the techarena forum, but again nothing worked (tried the MS DRM upgrade site and the registry entry). Oh if it helps I'm using Win7 x64 (yeah I know, I am asking for it...)
    Thanks again!

  • Using the Multimeter on Mono Tracks

It appears that the multimeter can only be used on stereo tracks. I love being able to see the frequency spectrum of a track and the level of each band. Is there any way to use the multimeter on a mono track, or is there another plug-in that will give me the same visual representation of the frequency content?
    Thanks.
    -Ben

you could put a set of multimeters into several busses. Send a signal from each track to a different bus. This keep your tracks mono, but allows multimeter to be stereo.
NB make sue that the busses have no output set!

  • Any hardware with app to watch DVDs using Dolby Headphone?

I love (and sometimes by no other choice) to watch DVDs on my laptop (in this case my new MacBook Pro). I've good set of Bose headphones but I really miss the 'surround sound experience. Googling, I found a small hardware device - http://www.audiotrak.net/optoplay.htm - from Audiotrak that plugs into a USB port and seems to offer Dolby Headphone technology... however, although the specs say that it will work on a Mac it looks as if the only included app for playback is a Windows app called "WinDVD Player" and the product seems somewhat dated: it's USB 1.1 and it says that it works with "Mac OS 10.1 or later".
Does anyone know anything of this product - or other similar products - that are small and portable, have licensed Dolby Headphone technology, and would work on a MBP?
Watching a movie on a small screen (in 'normal' size - full screen, to me, looks pretty bad. But the worst thing is the sound I'd just like for it be be more realistic... it's fine for "South Park: Season Seven" but rather blows when watching a flick in which the sound is supposed to be part of the experience...

Yes, I do wish someone who knew about how DVD Player and Macs with digital output function would jump in here and clarify things! If you go to DVD Player Help there's one section - "Selecting the audio output for a DVD movie" that tells you how to set up DVD Player Preferences with the optical out jack... my GUESS is that the actual decoding is accomplished via the home theater system, although the jack could be connected to the "Logitech Z-5500 5.1 THX Speaker System" and accomplish he same ). And there are likely dozens - if not hundeds - of digital speaker systems out there that do the same.
Oh - and just as an interesting side note, I found an old reference disk and DVD Player played Dolby Digital (through analog headphones and MacBook Pro speakers) just fine... and also played DTS although the warning sign that came up on screen said "In order to playback the DTS Digital Surround Sountrack, you will need a DTS ready DVD player with DTS digital output connected to a DTS decoder." OK, fine, I have that in my living room... and although neither Dolby or DTS sounded anything like the Dolby Headphone surround sound that I get when I jack in to my Denon AVR-4806 receiver, the sound differences left and right channels was obvious and there was a 'center channel' effect. Odd. I'm going to have to find one of my newer disks and see how newer audio formats are handled.
I really DO wish an Apple Sound engineer would jump in here! Maybe one of the folks responsible for DVD Player (yes, we take it for granted... but thanks for the new audio and video controls in Tiger! Sure would be nice to have Dolby Headphone available - particularly on laptops - on we who are always on the road!)

  • Bass distortion on X-FI Fatality using Dolby Digital Live and PX5

I've purchased the Ear Force PX5 headset for use with my PS3, XBOx and PC. But I seem to be having some problems with my pc sound. I have a X-FI Fatality sound card installed on Windows 7 x64. I've enabled DDL and it sounds great. Unless the bass, wich distorts when getting loud. Everything else sounds great. It's the same in 5.1 and 7.1 settings. I've tried all setting I can thing on in the console launcher. The headset is hooked up via a optical cable. Anysuggestions on what it could be?

First of all it is not personal. I have nothing against you guys, your're not responsible for drivers development/testing. I'm fed up mostly with all those responsible for releasing buggy software without making proper checks if it will work. I know that you cannot say anything but I believe these guys are giving you headache as well; they don't have to listen complaints and deal with angry customers. First thing I would do is to get rid of your test manager . Releasing something without doing proper tests is just unacceptable; especially when product is suppose to reach thounsands of customers. Could you at least tell if driver developers were informed about this issue and trying to solve the problem? I'm buliding new machine and have to consider change of my soundcard; such information would very usefull. Cheers.

  • Using Dolby Digital Life on multiple soundca

    Hello,
I have two X-Fi Titanium Fatalty Professional installed.
I?d like to know, if it is possible to activate Dolby Digital Life for both devices.
When I try to do so, i?m told that the device was busy.
    thx 4 help?

So far, here's what I found.
1.) iPhone is really made pair with one computer only.
2.) It seems to treat an iTunes library (meaning anything in there) as one library and even selectively syncing will erase the parts of the library you don't want to sync.
3.) Best work around seems to be to email yourself the smaller data elements that need to be sync'd to the computer with the complete iTunes library of media. (Export contact cards, backup calendar, export bookmarks... and bring them to the media computer)
4.) Photos from previously sync'd iPhoto library do stay separate and do not get erased when syncing to another computer.
At this point, I'm not sure what happens when I add events and contacts via the iPhone. I would ASSUME that when I go resync to the same computer they'll update eachother... But if I've deleted a few contacts and changed things, I hope it knows to give the iPhone priority...
Any other thoughts on this would be appreciated

  • When to use the Dolby option?

I am currently working on compressing a 720p project for DVDSP. When is it appropriate to use the Dolby audio encoder? People in the FCP forum have been suggesting it for various kinds of projects, it seems, but on page 93 of the Compressor manual, it says you need to have the full 6 channels of audio.
Is there a Dolby option for projects with less than 6 channels? Is there any reason to use Dolby over standard AIFF compression if you don't have 6 channels?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Cameron

I believe you're confusing an encoding algorithm (Dolby Digital) with a specific output type (5.1). While used interchangeably by many folks, they are not actually the same thing. Dolby compression in Compressor 2 provides support for only 1 channel (Dolby Digital Mono) all the way up to 7 channels (Dolby Digital 5.1 EX).
The preset included in all of Compressor 2's DVD groups (Dolby 2.0) is meant for more typical 2 channel (stereo or dual mono) audio mixes. (The other Dolby presets are found in the Audio Formats group)
The benefit for Dolby Digital is immense when it comes to space - it produces files (if you're using the standard 192kpbs setting) that are 1/10 the size of your AIFF file. In all but the rarest of cases, Dolby audio is the way to go.
Two important settings that you should adjust, however:
In the Audio tab of the Preset Inspector, alter Dialog Normalization to -31 (effectively neutralizing this feature)
In the Preprocessing tab, alter Compression Type to None
    Does that help any?

  • Can I use pan control in stereo track and balance control in mono track ?

it seems that in logic I can only use pan control in mono track and balance control in stereo track .

This is a flaw from the first days of Logic.
There is a "helper" plug in called "direction ....." - I can't remember the full name. Anyway, it gives you more control over stereo tracks. You can narrow the width (left - right) and pan accordingly.
    Hope this helps.

  • Dolby 5.1 Logo use

    Hi.
I was wondering if anyone knows if I can use the Dolby logo on my DVD projects if I have used Soundtrack to create the AC3 files. I read somewhere that because Soundtrack is Dolby Certified, you can use the logos. Which leads me to my next point...If I can use the logos, where can I find the logos, is there somewhere I can download them?

Scott, I can assure you that you are allowed to use Dolby logos to indicate Dolby Digital encoding if you use licensed software to produce such a product. You are mixing up the different types of licenses.
It is only theatrical film mixes where a mix theater has to be approved by Dolby, and accompanied by a Dolby rep. It is only with encoders and decoders (software and hardware) that a manufacturer is concerned with numbers of devices - this is the type of license Apple pays to include AC3 encoding and decoding in its products.
You can find the [4 types of license here|http://www.dolby.com/professional/licensing_trademark/basics.html] - the [last one|http://www.dolby.com/professional/licensingtrademark/othercontent.html] is the one that 99% of people here would be concerned with.
The ownership of a product like Soundtrack Pro that has a licensed Dolby encoder in it confers a royalty free license to you to release a soundtrack produced by that product. They do ask for registration of your production for their records, but there is no approval done on their part.

  • Mono output - can I use a mono mini-jack cable?

I'm outputting music mono from an iPad, to a mono system (Bose) currently using stereo mini jack output to twin RCA's with standard mono jack adaptors, this ties up two inputs on the Bose; can I simply use a mini jack mono from the Pad to standard jack mono cable (or even a mini jack mono to XLR)?
    Sorry if it's a thickie question . . . . .

Yes.  The iPod can connect with standard 3.5 mm plug

  • Editing Dolby 5.1 audio

    Hello all,
I'm a new user of video equipment and Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0, so please bear with me. I have searched for an answer to this question in the Forums, but not found a suitable answer yet. I hope one of you good people can help me - and if you do I would be very grateful indeed.
I have a Sony HDR-SR11 and I'm using Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0 as previously stated. I'm a journalist and I want to use my camera for sit-down interviews. Consequently, I bought a Sony ECM-HW2 bluetooth microphone (capable of recording in Dolby 5.1, just like my camera) in order to make sure that the subject of my interviews have the same (if not better) audio quality as myself.
However, when I feed the audio and video from my camera into APE 7, there is just a single line of audio (so you cannot distinguish a sound wave). The setting on both my camera and bluetooth microphone are Dolby 5.1 - so there is no conflict there.
I am able to see a sound wave when I record using the camera only and putting the selection to 2.ch, but when you try and add the bluetooth microphone on the 'Mono' setting - but the sound has an echo and is somewhat distorted.
So, in conclusion, here's the dilemma I face
Camera in 5.1 - microphone in 5.1: Excellent sound quality, undistorted, but unable to edit/see the sound file for editing purposes.
Camera in 2 ch - microphone in Mono: Sound echoing/distorted, able to see a sound file for editing purposes.
Camera in 5.1 - microphone off - Good sound quality (but not good enough for an interview), unable to see a sound file for editing purposes.
Camera in 2 ch - microphone off - OK sound quality (but not good enough for an interview), able to see a sound file for editing purposes.
Obviously, I think the best solution would be able to see the wave file with both the camera and microphone using Dolby 5.1, but I'm struggling to find a way at present.
Thanks for your time, if anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.
    Cheers,
    Martin

PE7 can import 5.1 audio but you can not edit it at the chanel level and PE7 can not export 5.1 audio, just stereo. You can still edit the 5.1 audio even though you can not see the waveform on the timeline (well, infact if you set the track width to the highest you can see the 6 channel lines and if you unlink video/audio and double click on the audio you can see the waveform in the clip monitor... even though at a low level). That said all you can do is adjust the overall level. If you have the Audio Mixer open you can see the levels for the 5.1 audio (at the channel level).

  • Is there a pure digital signal path from Game to Receiver (using XiFi and DD

    Hi Everybody,
when using Dolby Digital Li've on one of the later XiFi cards: Am I fortified against electrical interferance within my computer? That is, is any of the analogous part of the soundcard still working?
I'd like to use the card mainly for games. It will be connected to a receiver via digital output. Therefore, everything up to the receiver could be digital: Game sound (Multiple spatial sound sources), sound processing in the card (resulting in 2-8 digital channels), encoding into a dolby digital stream (via DDL processor), transfer to receiver. Only there, qualitity digital/analog transformers start to work and the analogous signals are well protected from the electrical pollution within my PC.
Does ist actually work like that? Is part of the signal path on the card always analogous? I really fear the interferance of the electrical field within my PC with the sound signal. I could imagine that the DDL-Processor takes analogous signals as input. I did find nothing contrary on the dolby web site.
    Thanks for any help,
    Oli'ver

actually DDL is software encoder and yes if U use it the analogue section of the card will not be used at all the bit stream will be passedthrough to your receiver.

  • HD TV Show... can't get Dolby Digital 5.1 to Work

I just bought an episode of Chuck (from NBC). In the description of the show it says that it has Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. I have my macbook-pro hooked up to my surround sound system using a mini-toslink -> optical connector. When playing the episode the Stereo track plays just fine... but if I switch to Surround.... I get no sound.
    Any ideas?

I bought LOST season 5 season pass.
I only found out about this 'non-feature' after trying for ages to get it to work and searching for a solution.
When I first complained I got told by support that it was probably a hardware issue and to call the support line. I did, got the same answer, and was then asked to part with more money for continued support, which I declined. I asked point blank whether DD5.1 really only plays back on Apple TV - which was denied.
After continuing to pursue it I finally got an email from 'tier 2' support admitting that 5.1 does only plays back on an Apple TV: here's the text:
+This is+ name removed +from iTunes Store Customer Support and your request+
+has been escalated to me today. I understand that you have been+
+unable to use Dolby surround sound on your computer for your iTunes+
    +Store purchases.+
+Dolby 5.1 surround sound is currently only available for the Apple+
+TV. Apple recognizes that no one is better qualified to provide+
+feedback about the content provided on the iTunes Store than the+
    +people who use it.+
I got back to them to say I'd like a (small!) partial refund - to cover the costs of my phone bills and disappointment. They've gone silent.
I've now reported it to Trading Standards in the UK as it is misselling. Curiously - since i complained the 'About HD' section - where it used to say +on your Apple TV or Computer+ has been changed.

  • TS3518 Dolby digital from Apple TV

This used to work fine before the last update.  What did apple do for this not to work. I have HDMI out of my Apple TV into my surround sound receiver which decodes dolby digital.  I have to turn off dolby digital to get audio.  the whole point of using a surround recieve is to use dolby surround.  There is no point of renting movies from Apple TV wiothout surround sound capabilities.  Why is this not working?

My experience is the same.  Loss of Dolby Digital 5.1 output.  Amplifier (Yamaha) indicating "PCM" signal, instead of DD.  So far, no acknowledgment of the issue from Apple.
