Okay... here's my iBook glitches list.

I've had my iBook G4 for a couple months now. I hold 5 seperate computer certs, mostly in programming, so I tend to know how to rectify things myself, and I'm an avid Windows hater.
With the recent developments with Apple, I.E. since Jobs came back, I decided to finally switch.
What a wonderful world is that of Apple computing! Things actually make sense. The operating system is so intuitave. If Apple made a adroid it's name would be Data and he would indeed be centient! (My geek alarm just went off)
So here's the rub. I don't like that my battery doesn't fit flush.
I don't like that while in the "get info" pane, while editing an item name, highlighting with the mouse is not allways reflected on the screen. The 1st. character is but not always the rest. However the characters I'm manipulating respond the way I would expect them too after being highlited.
I don't like that sometimes characters overlap after expanding a tree then colapsing the same tree. (Again this seems to happen mostly in the "Get Info" pane.
I don't like that sometimes while browsing with Safari not all images on the page show up. Like on the 'avatar' selection site at Apple.
Everything else, and maybe these, turn out to be user error. I have made some silly mistakes getting used to this operating system but at least I can admit that tey're my mistakes.
I sometimes fear the 'logic board failure' God but I'm going to get the extended warranty before my 1 year runs out.
The only other weird this with the Apple is that my router 'Netgear Wireless' logs my other computer's web usage and obeys the blocks I have on certain web sites. But my Mac, even though my router recognises it and all is fine, it just blows right through any attepts to sensor its online navigation. But that's just an odity. The 'Netgear' forums offer no insight.
Long live the Apple empire.

I don't like that my battery
doesn't fit flush.
What Revision iBook G4 do you have? I think this was
already corrected, at least the last models I looked
at had it corrected.

Are you sure this isn't a server error? Do these same
images always show up fine in other browsers?
Seems to be just the iBook but if I find it happens with the other machine I'll eat my words.

This was mainly an iBook Dual-USB issue due to design
flaws.

Does the following info reflect a machine that was built AFTER they resolved the issue, or a machine that may suffer from the issue in the future?

    Are questions reg. this okay here?

  • IBooks WISH LIST  .2015

    Where can we summit wish list request for future versions or updates of iBooks?
    I need the ability to OPEN my own PDF files that I imported into iBooks in other apps. ( an OPEN IN... feature ).
    If anyone knows the link to submit requests, please post it here.
    Thanks

    I am nor asking for the "email the pdf" option.  Just to be able to use MY PDF's with other apps on my iPad.
    They just need to do what other apps are already doing. They let you open the PDF files in other apps on the iPad.  Nothing new.
    An "OPEN IN..." option the list the apps on your iPad to open the PDF's in.
    Thanks for the post.

  • Okay, here is a GF4 Ti4600 problem for you

    My MSI Ti4600 problem has a problem blocking in games. It runs a little blocky in most games, but NFS Porsche is the worst.
    I had a LeadTek GF3 w/64 meg RAM in there before that ran great. I really don't know why I wanted to change it... The same games ran great on my GF3, and continue to run great on the same GF3 in my P3 750 machine. Here are my machine specs:
    P4 2.0 GHtz
    768 meg pc800 ram
    Western Digital 120 gig 7200 rpm w/8 meg cache
    Western Digital 40 gig 7200 rpm
    600 watt (yes, 600) power supply
    MSI GF4 Ti4600
    Intel D850EMV2 motherboard
    Aopen 12x DVD
    Samsung 40x12x40 cd-rw
    USB 2.0
    D-Link ethernet card
    Creative Labs Audigy Platinum EX
    Direct X 9
    Windows XP home on the 120 gig drive and Red Hat Linux 8.0 on the 40 gig drive.
    Also, the case, processor, chipset, hard drives and video card are all liquid cooled. The card is not overclocked and my video settings are set at 800x600. I had Direct X 8.1 in and it still did the same thing. My 3D Mark score is almost identical to the GF3 card at 11,700.
    So what gives? Is this video card as cheap as I think it is?

    Okay, problem solved!
    I went with the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, which by the way, uses more power than the GeForce 4 Ti4600, and have not looked back since! Oh yeah, I am using the same power supply too

    Be careful about what you call a POS. My guess is that there are less than a dozen power supply manufacturers, as listed on the net. I can assure you that in manufacturing, one company will make the same product and put different names on it for other companies, distributors etc.....
    Now a question for deathstalker and wonkaboy:
    After about two days of searching the net, magazines, manufacturer's sites and speaking with techs in large and small computer stores, why did I find absolutely no articles or comments about Geforce 4's and power problems?  If they need as much power as YOU say, and most power supplies sold in computers are around the 300 watt flavor( and not all antec), then why are there no articles or complaints about it? Why do the manufacturer's not put XXX watts combined required on the box, in the readme or in the manual? Because it is nowhere near an issue you are making of it.
    Seriously, with thousands upon thousands of GeForce 4's sold, and nothing about power problems? Except here, of course.
    By the way, I did find one site ( Best Buy I think) that listed some power requirements, they averaged at 300 watt power supply, if it was even listed. Most 300, some 250 and only one 350. All with no combined power recommendation.
    If MSI has a need, it is heat sinks for the memory chips and a better gpu heat sink, but like your power supply idea, this is just an opinion.
    I should've learned from the MSI mobo I had briefly. It had a nice little habit of supplying power to the KVM switch and optical mouse when it was shut down. I, however, got absolutely no help on the old website with this problem.
    Now, after all that, I must thank the two of you for replying to this thread and trying to help me with this problem.
    Thank You!
    That is something I am sure you don't hear often on the net, or even in this message board :(

  • Hi i have just bought a used ibook from goodwill and need to reset the id and password.is there anyway to do this? i called tech support and they said to try here because our ibook is considered opsolete and they can't help me. thanks

    hi before i start i did not steal it, i bought a used ibook and need to know if there is a way to reset or get past the old user id and pass word. we bought it from goodwil so no way to ask old owner and i called tech support and it is conciderd opsolete so no help from them and know one in this area works on mac. so what can i do?  this is for my daughter and we are not rich thats why we bought used. thanks for any help.

    Here are the instructions, as I have them:
    Press the Command + s key during startup. This takes you to Single User Mode, where you will see a command line.
    Type this when the command-line prompt (>) appears:
    mount -uw /
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    shutdown -h now
    When the iBook restarts, you will see the setup screen. This allows you to create a new account. BE SURE to give yourself administrative privileges. You can now use this new account and set it to log in automatically with this new account if you don't want to be bothered with the login screen every time you start up.
    You can also delete the old account if you want to free up some hard drive space.
    Good luck!
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    However, it is desirable to do it with the disc, if it is available, which is why I waited to see if the user has the disc before supplying the instructions for doing it via Single User Mode.
  • Servers lacked maintenance, here's my to-do list
    I'll be taking over administration of a rack of Solaris machines that haven't had an admin for the last 9 months. Prior to that they had limited maintenance. I understand there are a few tickets that will need addressed, but I won't have the details for a few days on them. Regardless, I'm trying to compile a to-do list. What would you add to this list?
    1, Check for hardware failures, disks, fans, psus, etc... repair as needed
    2, Ensure backups are being taken and are restorable
    3, Check all installed packages for exploits, update as needed
    4, Check who has permissions to access these servers, internally and externally. Verify they all should have access.
    5, Setup monitoring providing me with immediate access of issues.
    6, Acquire Oracle Support agreement details so if\when I need them, I have ready access.
    What would you add\change\remove on this list? Thanks in advance for your help.
    Edited, Thanks arbrante
  • Phone to ibook 'service list not found'  Mac to Phone 'unable to validate'
    I'm trying to send files from my ibook to my Samsung SGH-E900 but it always gives me the warning on 'unable to validate' also when I try and send photos from my phone to the computer it gives me a warning of 'service list not found' Any ideas?
    Two suggestions.
    Turn off phone, remove the Sim card carefully and don't touch the gold contact. Put back in phone and turn back on see if it functions again.
    Secondly, I would try this first. Hold down the Home Button at the bottom and the on/off button on top together until you see the little apple logo. Release both buttons and let the device reset.
    Now if either of these fail to work, go into settings-cellular-network
    Click on reset network.
    One of these suggestions should work.
  • What kind of weather is it okay to use your ibook in?
    Of course I don't mean rain, snow (or mist or fog) or meteors. I live in Chicago and sometimes my work involves me working in a unheated enclosed area. I have power, just no heat. It's starting to get cold out and sometimes I want to use my iBook in this unheated enclosed area. Is there a point that I should not use my laptop? 30 or 40 degrees?
    Thanks
    Chris
    The big problem is that the hard drive may not be tolerant of low temperatures if it's not already running and generating its own heat (i.e. cold start at low temps). Cold temps can do a real job on the heads and bearings. Acceptable storage temps are always more extreme than acceptable operating temps. The rest of the electronics should actually do better in cold temps. Semiconductors switch faster and use less power if they can be kept cooler. Of course artificial cooling methods would use more power than they would save. Some extreme systems have been cryogenically cooled to heavily overclock them. Of course this means a small tower hooked up to a larger box, which effectively turns the system into a freezer.
    It might not be a case of catastrophic failure, but the lubrication might not work too well when cold. I've seen some people who are using HDs as MP3 storage devices for their cars. Some in cold weather have problems starting them up in cold weather, although it depends on the individual drive. There are a few awfully expensive and low capacity drives designed for extreme heat and cold.
  • Hello. Okay, here's my problem. I connect iphone5 with itunes all perfect, everything syncs and all. BUT when I am to click BACKUP NOW I can't! its grey so I can't click it!!!
    Hello people!
    Thanks for taking your time and reading this.
    I have a big problem, you can say. When I connect the iphone5 to my Mac, itunes responds properly, and all is perfectly fine.
    BUT I cannot make a backup, you know where it says BACKUP, under to the right is says "Manual Back Up and Restore"...
    and FINALLY to backup you normally click on "BACK UP NOW"
    however I CANNOT selected it, its grey so I can't click on that nor the one next to it "Restore Backup"...
    Thanks.
    Found the answer! Sorry for wasting your time.. IF anyone ever needs it here :
    Select Finder.
    Hold the option button while selecting the Go menu on the top bar.
    Holding option brings up the Library in the drop down menu. Select it.(Library)
    Open the preferences folder in this Library folder.
    Find com.apple.iTunes.plist
    (Make sure you quit iTunes)
    Now move this file to the trash.
    Restart your computer.
    Empty out your trash.
    Start iTunes again. (Don't worry, it'll automatically make a new preference file.)
    Now it'll work.
    PS: No need to restart mac.. just make the itunes is closed before doing this.
    THANKS again.
  • HT4059 iBook glitch. How can it be fixed?
    I have an iBook purchase that paused during download and it will not resume. I have updated the app and restarted my iPad.  Nothing works. I am stuck in a loop of return to purchases.....but it won't work.
    Your data plan with your carrier includes tethering/personal hotspot?
    There is no hotspot icon.
    My data plan with my carrier does not include tethering/personal hotspot. When I go to Settings > Cellular under iOS 7, there is a Set Up Personal Hotspot selection.
  • Okay to plug original iBook 1.33ghz recharger into wall?
    Hey, i have an iBook g4 1.33GHz, and i was wondering if you could plug the battery charger into the wall with either of the plugs you can plug into it. You know, the long cord or the one that just goes straight into the wall. Its the one that came with my computer, so its the original one. So should I use a surge protector or is there one built into it?
    You can do either. The longer cable includes a ground pin. There is no built in surge protector, so you should use one. But don't trust a surge protector if there is lightning--always unplug everything to be really safe.
    Good luck!
  • Okay here are all the problems that I have
    1. When I burn to DVD movie quality drops dramatically
    2. The button highlight is floating.
    3. The project does not play in widscreen.
    4. When I set the project to play in widscreen, it does not play in full widscreen on my TV
    5. There is no color and no sound.
    HELP!!!
    iDVD 05 didn't do this. I'm so ****** that I had to spend $80 dollars for this piece of crap program.
    Hi
    If You make a DVD to be played on a computer - it doesn't matter BUT
    if it is supposed to play OK on a stand alone DVD-player and TV-set
    Then it depends where in the World it's supposed to that (not ref. to region
    coding - something compleatly different)
    USA -> TVs plays NTSC
    Europe -> PAL
    In Europe most DVD-player can play-back NTSC to a PAL TV but the other
    way around usually doesn't work.
    So for US use. Use a NTSC miniDV Camera - set iMovie to NTSC (often done
    already) - so also iDVD.
    To EU - record as above but from iMovie - goto JES deinterlacer (free download
    on the net) - convert to PAL and set iDVD to PAL - start a new iDVD project
    In iMovie and iDVD is NTSC and PAL refered to as 29.97 resp 25 fps.
    Yours Bengt W
  • Okay, heres the deal....
    I have an Ipad and an Iphone 4 that were synced with another computer that had all my photos, music, apps and movies on it. That computer ahs since bit the dust and i lost any chance of getting the Itunes folder off the computer to set it up on a new computer. I dont want to lose all the information on the divices. When i try and backup the devices on the new mac that i just purchased it says they are synced with another machine and it will replace the library on the phone or Ipad. Is there a way to move what is on my Ipad and Iphone onto the new computer without losing all the information on each of them? I just got off the phone with apple care and a kid that was trying to read the wrong stuff right out of a book.....
    Sneekyo, Welcome to the discussion area!
    To open ports, follow the directions in How do I use Port Mapping (Part I).
    But if that doesn't work for you, you may need to set up your computer as a 'default host' See KB 166677, Setting up a default host on your network.
  • Listing my first ibook in ALL countries
    My ibook is listed only in my own country, although I thought I selected ALL territories. How do I list it for sale in all countries please?
    Login to your iTunes Connect account on your browser
    Click on  "Manage Your Books"
    Click on the "Rights and Pricing" button in the upper right corner
    On this page I think there was a button in the upper left corner that said "Add Territory". I have all 51 countries selected, so I get a button "Edit Existing Territories". Either way the button is on this page
    Hope that helps
