Okay I give up - wicked slow startup time
I've been reading every post I could find related to slow startup times, and trying every conceivable solution others have thought of and that I could think of, and I'm still plagued by a slow startup time!
Last week it was not a problem. I had just created a 10GB partition and installed Windows XP on it. Things were running smoothly. My startup times weren't like 20 seconds, but they weren't as bad as they are now (a consistent 3.5-4 minutes). Maybe it would take a minute to a minute and a half to start. Then suddenly over the weekend, it started taking 5+ minutes to boot! What could have happened?
I panicked and erased the Windows partition, backed up to Time Machine (suspecting possible disk failure in my future), and started doing every maintenance thing I know to do (fsck-which returned no errors, permissions repair, reset nv-ram and p-ram, OnyX maintenance scripts). This got it back down to where it is now, a consistent 3.5 minutes. That's still much slower than it should be.
Below is everything the Console says immediately after booting. Thanks so much for anything anyone can do to help!

Safari 3.1.1 Extremely slow startup times (Suddenly)
Hi I'm running a Macbook with a 2.4 GHz Processor, (Intel Core 2 Duo), 4 Gigs of ram and Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.3.
this mac is about 2 months old and suddenly am having extremely slow startup times with Safari. The rest of the computer is very fast, this problem is only with safari... It used to open with about 2 or 3 bounces on the dock... now suddenly its around 15-20 bounces before it opens. It bounces this many times, and then I receive the beach ball for a few seconds. I am assuming it is probably a build up of some files, or tasks it runs through to open... It is worst when you open it for the first time after powering on the mac, after you open it, and close it it opens up a bit faster.
I have tried the basics, i.e. resetting safari and things like that.
Most of the suggestions for deleting files out of the User>Library> are for older OS's and do not apply to Leopard...
Any suggestions?Navigate to this location: Macintosh HD/Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Preferences and delete the following files:
com.apple.safari.plist
com.apple.safari.RSS.plist
Do this with Safari NOT running. See if that solves the problem. -
IMac with SSD and Hard drive very slow startup time
I have a new mid 2011 iMac with a 250gb SSD drive and a 2TB drive. All are from Apple as BTO options. When I first used the iMac my typical startup time from the hardware check chime to desktop was typically 12 seconds. Something, somehow has been changed because now it takes over one minute to boot up from the SSD. After the chime I hear the fans running and also the 2tb drive. After about 20 seconds I hear the hard drive spin down and then after another 20 seconds it starts up again. Once it starts up the boot up sequences contiunes and returns to the desktop. After this the iMac perfprms as normal. I have tried running disk utility from the recovery partition. I have also reinstalled Lion as well from the recovery partition and neither of these change the outcome.
When I first got the iMac I used time machine to restore from a previous machine into the 2tb partition and then went into advanced options in System preferences>Users&Groups to point to my home folder on the 2Tb drive rather than the default one on the SSD. That was working fine until I discovered software problems with both Preview and Textedit where they would not start up with this arangement. I then repointed my home folder to the default one on the SSD which cured this issue with these programmes leaving my data remaining on the 2Tb drive. Since doing this I have had the one minute boot up problem.
Can anyone offer any advice as to how I may overcome this problem and get my iMac back to starting up in twelve seconds from the SSD as it did before. Any help would be appreciated on this topic.
Thanks.Where do you maintain your Home folder - on the SSD or on the HDD?
If you want to do a clean install (from scratch) then do the following:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
Before you go to the extreme of the above would you do this:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Just in case your system slowness is due to something eating up CPU time. Oh, and if your system is brand new check the upper right corner of the menubar for a "dot" inside the Spotlight glass. This means Spotlight is indexing the drive. Until it finishes your system will be quite sluggish. -
How to fix slow startup times on a macbook air
Before upgrading to Moutain Lion my MacBook Air booted up to the desktop in less than 30 seconds. Now with Mountain Lion it takes 1 minute and 30 seconds to get to the desktop. What can I do to get the startup time back to the way it was before upgrading?
I had already checked and tried numerous "google" searches without any successbefore coming here. If you can't give a response without being sarcastic then don't bother replying.
Wow! Are you thin-skinned. My comment wasn't, as you say, sarcastic. I never assume anything not explicitly stated or implied. If you've visited these forums for any length of time, you'd know how many don't do the obvious things, but expect responders to be clairvoyant. If none of those hits solved your issue, I'm out of ideas, since the global and app-specific defaults changes work here. Good luck and have a happy holiday weekend (US-only). -
Will More RAM Slow Startup Times and Will it Speed Up Gaming?
Hi,
I was thinking of upgrading my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro's 4GB of Memory to 8GB (2X4GB).
I have heard roumors that it will slow down startup times. Also, it sounds obvious, but will it help with gaming performance and reducing lag during games?
Thanks."I use my Mac a lot in sleep mode so that is something to consider I suppose"
Don't let that concern you---it's not that big a pause. RAM is your friend. Thomas Reed's advice to use Activity Monitor is your best helper.
My older MBP has 2G RAM and can hold 6G, but AM has never told me I need more. Here what AM's RAM report looks like this morning:
44KB for "outs" is nothing, and the computer has not been restarted in days. (A restart clears the "in/out" numbers, so you should only run this test after using the computer for a while since the last restart.) On my MBP and for my usage patterns, 2G is completely appropriate. However, I've seen similar posts here where someone had 4G like you but the "outs were 25-30 percent of the "ins." Those people need RAM. -
Slow startup time for JDeveloper 9i
The JDeveloper 9i release candidate takes a long time to startup. The pop-up window for method completion is also much slower than JBuilder 5.0. And I am using a 1.2 GHz P4 machine. Is it possible to speed up the startup time (maybe by making it not load certain libraries, such as XML editor, UML editor, etc.)?
Thanks
RoshanThis is a problem caused by references to files / URLs on
remote systems which are slow.
In particular, having projects with Remote Files/URLs in them
can cause slowness.
Same for Libraries - Having too many libraries or libraries with
remote links can slow down the system.
Look carefully at your project's Libraries and be sure you are
not including everything
Also see your project and make sure the files are all available
locally.
Let me know if this is the problem or not,

can you help me please? It seems, that all Windows machines develop this type of long startup-times over time. Conclusion: Bad quality operating system . There are a few things you may try: Disk cleanup, disk defragmentation and avoiding non-neccesary start-up programs running msconfig. My experience is, that all of these have limited impact, so the ultimate solution is a clean re-install of Windows. To do this, back-up all user data and use recovery disks as available.

Anyone having slow startup times?
My laptop starts-up faster. What the hell?
it usually takes about 3-5 minutes for my Bionic to load up. I just see that stupid red eye character just churning.
Anyone has suggestions to make my startup faster?
Thanks in advance!Thats not normal. Mine boots up right away, in around 15 seconds maybe 30 the most. If its taking longer, do a master reset. Make sure you are NOT using antivirus apps and launches that change the look of the home screens. I reoot my phone around 2 times a day because i swap batteries when I run out as I work 12 hr shifts.

Well I'm going to try to make a long story short here. My k8t-neo MB died about a month ago. After finally getting a board back (refurbished), I reinstalled it into my computer. I think I got all the bios setting the same as before and I did a bios update also. The problem is that the computer seems to hang at the XP bootup screen for like 20 seconds or so. I can see the little progress bar freeze a couple of times which scares me, but it eventually boots up. With my last MB I would only see that boot screen for less than 5 seconds or so. Not much should have changed since I installed it into the same computer. It seems to see the full gig of ram and I tried different slots with the memory which didn't change anything. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Hi
What does task manager say (CTRL+ALT+DEL), under performance what is memory and CPU usage, on idle both should be low. Also under processes ( if cpu usage is high) can you see what is causing it? If there is a suspect delete it.
Also look in ADD/REMOVE progs, see list and remove any 'nasty' mem grabing progs. Like Real networks stuff.
Could well be a driver, say display adaptor, mouse, or similar.
You have updated from the MS XP updates site?
If you can't see what it is I would be inclined to put the XP CD back in and select the repair option. that will keep settings, except IE and OE, and reinstall Windows, using XP drivers, which may cure it.
Use Safe defaults and leave on AUTO, (fastest settings.), remember to use this before setting boot seq.
In boot seq, use floppy, CD, HDD-0 other devices disabled. Floppy seek enabled. See in Boot seq, that the HDD (network) is not the HDD device. Enable LAN, Sound, 1394. Will not slow rig. Disable P20378 ( promise raid). Enable PATA IDE, You can disable SATA IDE,VIA controller, but I would leave it enabled and vlink. Enable floppy controller.
Check boot sector virus setting enabled.
Save and reboot.
If your OS has been in some time, spyware and virus may be slowing it.
One final thought, this was a fresh install of XP with your new board, not the old one? If not could be dragging previous faults with it.
Cheers

Macbook pro 7,1, osx 10.9.4.. just upgraded from 10.9.3. 10.9.2 was installed fresh in January.
Before that I had snow leopard. Never before has the fan turned on during startup in the 3.5 years I've owned this machine. That means the laptop gets hot? Why would it get hot at startup? And it takes 5-10 seconds longer to boot now too.Same problem here. I just upgraded from 10.9.3 to 10.9.4 and the fan hasn't stopped since. Before seeing this post I was starting to get VERY worried. Now I'm thinkin..... Apple - ya gotta fix something here!!

Extremely slow startup/"Error loading kernel" when single user mode is run
My daughter's iMac has become very poorly responsive with a very slow startup time. It takes about 1 minute for the progress wheel to begin when I startup her machine. And then it takes another 2 1/2 to 3 minutes before the login screen appears. The computer runs very slowly with the spinning activity wheel occurring frequently. When I start it up in single user mode I get the following message on screen:
efiboot loaded from device: Acp:(PNP0A03,0)/PC: (1F12)/SATA(0,0)/HD(Part 2, Sig56BF F8F1-9ADB-4101-BD3C-BFBC38AEED26)

Could some one tell me what this means? And better still, what do I need to do to fix it?
Thanks.
JOhnI can't picture what is doing this other than something missing or muxed, but perhaps it's time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Hey there,
During startup of my MacBook Pro, Captive Network Assistant checks 249 different airport, hotel and other misc. WiFi hotspots. Proabaly adding a good 3 minutes to my startup time. ***? This all started while I was on extended layover at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.
I thought Captive Network Assistant was an iOS thing. No iOS devices in my home or office. Here's a portion of the console log during startup.

Looking at the times, I see this only takes a fraction of a second but my startup time is still much much longer than it ever was or should.
Does anyone have any idea on how to get rid of this? I deleted the Captive Network Assistant.app from my computer but the checking continues. It seems to be a rarely mentioned issue doing a web search, and nothing like this, although it's referred to in certain articles.
Really weird.
GreggI'd take another look at your startup log.
If you look closely, you'll see that all those log messages occurred in the space of 30 milliseconds - by comparison, a human blink takes about 150 milliseconds.
So while I don't doubt you're seeing slow startup time, I don't think CaptiveNetworkSupport is the culprit, per se.
Fortunately, since every startup event is timestamped, it should be easy enough to determine what task is taking the most time.
As for CNS, it's not just an iOS thing - it's standard in Mac OS X, too. I'm also under the impression (but can't confirm) that it only checks the networks that you've previously connected to, so check System Preferences -> Network -> AirPort -> Advanced -> WiFi and delete any networks you no longer use or expect to connect to. -
Slow startup CC&B 2.3.1
Anyone else out there seeing an extremely slow startup time with CC&B 2.3.1 (using RH Linux here, but have seen it on Windows servers as well, so I'm not so sure OS is really important here, but wanted to note it just in case).
It shows the following in weblogic_current.log, but I'm not seeing any errors. It just seems to HANG. Note the lengthy time lapse between the last few lines I've pasted below. It goes on just fine past this point and seems to start normally from there, but does a 4-5 minute time period seem realistic here? I've never seen this before with previous versions of CC&B so it has me scratching my chin. Thanks in advance for any input....

EJB slow response time in cluster
We have 2 clusters : cluster 1(3 managed servers) and cluster2( 2 managed servers). We have an EJB deployed on cluster2 which is being called by an application on cluster1. Issue is that this EJB gives a very slow response time (in the order of minutes). There are no errors or exceptions in the logs.
When we shut down one of the nodes on cluster2, the respose from the same EJB is very fast. Please help as to where we should look out for the issue?Could be that you have a network configuration problem. The source of the problem is how host names and IP addresses are resolved,
and there is a workaround. RMI and other naming services use the InetAddress class to obtain resolved host names and IP addresses.
InetAddress caches lookup results to improve subsequent calls, but when it is passed a new IP address or host name, it performs a
cross-reference between the IP address and the host name to prevent address spoofing. If you supply the host name as an IP address,
InetAddress still tries to verify the name of the host. To workaround this problem, include the host name and IP address in the
hosts file on the client, for example,
127.0.0.1 localhost

We have just migrated from WCS to NCS and are running the NCS server on a vm. We used the small appliance ova for deploying the NCS server, as we have less than 100 access points. Has anyone else noticed that NCS takes forever to start? I ran into an issue trying to upload an autocad file for a new map and it seemed to crash NPS. When doing an NCS Stop and NCS Start, the server has been sitting there for over 15 minutes starting... How long should it take to start the NCS services?
I am noticing the same thing .... extremely slow startup times but I have one worse. I just installed it and I can't even seem to reach it on the network. What VM network adaptor did you select? WIth the template I think it defaulted to something like r1000? I am on the network team not the VM team so I am trying to figure it out and when it take forever to boot each time it makes it that much worse. I assumed go VM would be a good idea but this experience isn't starting out too well.
