Old airport express and 10.9

How can i configure an old airport express on mavericks Apple have stopped supporting them, very poor show!!

You will need to use AirPort Utility.....or borrow, if you don't have one....a Mac that is running the Leopard or Snow Leopard operating systems, or a PC.

  • New Time Capsule, new MacBook, old Airport Express and Airtunes

I intend to buy a new MacBook and a Time Capsule, and I still have an old Airport Express, without 802.11n. I intend to use this Airport Express just for Airtunes, maybe to connect to a printer as well.
Now I was wondering, even though the Time Capsule is capable of using the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands simultaneously, the MacBook is only capable of using one band, right? So if I use Airtunes to stream music to my Airport Express, my MacBook would be forced to use the 2.4GHz band, thus slower Time Machine backups etcetera. Is this assumption correct?
Or will my MacBook send the Airtunes signal over the 5GHz band to the Time Capsule, which will send the signal over the 2.4GHz band to the Airport Express, thus not slowing down any Time Machine backups?

    I don't think so.

Yes I think this is correct. At least it seems to me that this is the purpose of having simultaneous dual-band. The time Capsule can send or receive on both bands at the same time, or receive on one band and then send on the other.

  • I have just purchased and installed a new Airport extreme base station but now the Airport Utility cannot see my old Airport Express. Are their compatibility issues and do I need to purchase a new Express?

When you can, take a look at the old AirPort Express and locate the model number in the faint print on the side of the device.
If you see A1084 or A1088, this is an older Express version that is no longer supported by the current version of AirPort Utility that you are using with the new AirPort Extreme.
If that is the case, your Express is at least 6 years old...probably older...so it is about time to treat yourself to a new version with much faster speeds and more features.

  • Using old Airport Express with new Airport Extreme to stream music

I recently purchased the newest Airport Extreme to replace my older Airport Express. I'm running OS 10.8.5. I like the speed of the new WIFI signal for streaming to Apple TV. No long waits or buffering interruptions while watching movies. I still want to use the old Airport Express to stream music from my iPhone to a stereo in another part of the house. I plugged in the Express module and it just flashes amber. Doesn't show up in Airport Utility either.

I suggest that you first perform a "factory default" reset on your old AirPort Express, and then, check out the following Apple Support article for configuring it for streaming.

  • Using Airport Express and Extreme Together

I have the old Airport Express and have just bought the latest Extreme. I'm sure Extreme will work fine with my iMac but am not so sure it will work with my G4 Powerbook as it does not have the recommended software requirements. Is there anyway I can setup a network using both the old Express and the new Extreme?

    Welcome to the discussions!
Your old AirPort Express is a "g" wireless device while your new AirPort Extreme is a newer and much faster "n" wireless device.
If you are asking if you can use your old AirPort Express to "extend" the wireless from the AirPort Extreme using wireless only, the answer is yes....BUT....your new AirPort Extreme will drop down to old "g" wireless levels if you do this.
The setup procedure for this is quite difficult and frustrating for many users. To get an idea of what is involved if you want to try this, see this link for the procedure:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2355832&tstart=0
IF...you are able to connect the AirPort Express to your AirPort Extreme using an ethernet connection, the setup will be much easier to accomplish and your AirPort Extreme will maintain faster "n" speeds on the wireless. Post back for more details if that is a possibility.

  • I have an old Airport Express I want to use to extend WiFI (which is best Airport Express or Extreme) and to have a HD for storing Itunes connected to the old Airport as well.         I would also like to have the new Airport hardwired to my Mac (desktop)

I am willing to buy a new Airport Express or Extreme so I can get at least one LAN port - but only if I can use that LAN port to connect to my MAC (desktop) so it doenst have to get internet via the WiFi- AND so I can set it up as its own hot spot.  I think I saw that was possible??  That way my guest network would be separate from my home Network.  Just trying to get the best layout. I have cable modem to old Airport now and USB from it to printer.
Maybe a new Airport - again USB to printer and LAN to MAC(?) then old Airport elsewhere in the house to extend the signal and use USB off it to hard drive to store Itunes?  Would LOVE to have it there to use for Airplay etc- Is that possible- I have read many comments and still not sure if it is possible or not.
Baxically I need a simple solution to storing all my photos- music and movies (MAC only has 500GB) AND have a great back up; Currently have a 1TB drive as Time Machine - so could use that for back up- but running out of space on MAC for all the media I am saving.  THANKS!!

You are asking several different questions. If you need to store your photos, music, and movies on an external volume, you certainly can. Any externally connected hard disk drive will work, connected either directly to your Mac or to your Time Capsule as a shared volume.
You should not rely upon using that as a backup device though. Although you certainly may use it for both purposes, it is a better idea to have dedicated backup devices for a variety of reasons not limited to redundancy. You would not want to simultaneously lose all your pictures as well as your backup. If they are all on the same device, that could happen. Furthermore, a backup cannot back up the volume on which it is running.
As for adding an Extreme or Express, using its LAN port for your iMac, and then enable Internet sharing so you can effectively use the iMac as a "hotspot", you can do that too, but I am unclear on what benefit you believe this arrangement would convey for you.
An Extreme's Guest network is separate from its Main network; that is the reason for having it.

  • I have read all of the similar issues on this site and I still cannot connect my airport extreme (although there is no problem with my old airport express - help...

i have read all of the numerous and similar issues on this subject.  and i still cannot connect my new airport extreme.  my old airport express works fine still.  help.  and why are there so many issues with connecting this stuff?  i thought this stuff was supposed to be getting easier, not harder... thanks.

Sorry, but I have no idea on what you have read and tried so far so please forgive me for any redundancy.
Is your AirPort Extreme the only router in your current network configuration? Which exact model is it? If there are other routers being used, please provide their make(s) & model(s). Also the make & model of your Internet modem.
What is your goal with the Extreme? Is it to replace the "old" AirPort Express? Will you still be using the Express for any reason(s)?

  • I want to upgrade my old airport express to the new express. Can I just switch out the old for the new or must I delete the old network first and start from scratch with the new express?

I want to upgrade my old airport express to the new express. Can I just switch out the old for the new or must I delete the old network first and start from scratch with the new express?

It is not necessary to delete your old wireless networks first, but doing so may eliminate confusion. If you wish to do that, open System Preferences > Network, and select Wi-Fi from the left column. Click the Advanced... button, then select your old wireless networks and delete them with the "–" (minus) button. Make sure the "Remember networks this computer has joined" remains checked.
    OK then Apply.
This prevents your Mac from searching for your previous network which will no longer exist.
A new Express creates an open wireless network that you must select before you can configure it. It appears in your Wi-Fi menu like this:
Select it. AirPort Utility will load and walk you through its configuration.
Edit: If you are really using OS X 10.5.1 as shown in your profile, the above screenshot is not applicable. Instead, select the network called "Apple network nnnnnn" and then launch AirPort Utility.

  • I have a new Airport Extreme and an old airport express.  I am getting an amber light on the new Extreme and a green light on the Express.   I have internet no problem but the status light is blinking amber

I have a new Airport Extreme and and old airport express.  I am getting an amber status light on the Extreme and a green light on the Express.  The Extreme is blinking amber all the time.
I have internet and everything seems to be working.
I have reset and pulled the power cord on both the extreme and the internet block
How do I make it Green?

If things seem to be working OK, but the amber light is flashing......the AirPort Extreme has a message for you. To see what that might be......
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon
Click on the amber dot in the small window
It might be a message that a firmware update is available for your AirPort Extreme.

  • I have the airport express as router can I buy the new airport express and use my old airport to extend my net?

I have the airport express as router can I buy the new airport express and extend my net?

Things can get confusing pretty quickly since there are 3 different versions of the AirPort Express.
If by "old", you mean you have Model No A1084 or A1088 AirPort Express (look at the label on the side of the device for the Model No), it cannot be used with the "Extend a wireless network" feature of other newer Apple routers.
If your AirPort Extreme is "square" shaped with rounded corners, then the "old" AirPort Express will not work with your AirPort Extreme using the "Extend a wireless network" settings.
You could use a "previous version" AirPort Express, Model No A1264 to "Extend", or the "new" AirPort Express, Model No A1392, for that purpose.
If your AirPort Extreme is a simultaneous dual band product, then the "new" Express would be able to "extend" both bands.  The "previous" AirPort Express (Model A1264) would be able to extend only one band, since it is not a dual band device.

  • New Time Capsule and old AirPort Express?

I just purchased a new 2TB Time Capsule to replace my older/smaller capacity version, which is probably four years old now. I have my TV/stereo system hooked up via wireless to a very old AirPort Express which is probably close to 10 years old now. My question is, will I get the wireless performance advantage (that I assume the new Time Capsule provides) if I am sending over to this old AP Express? Do I need to purchase a new AP Express to get better performance for the entire system? Does it matter or make a difference, performance-wise, how old the APE is?

No. The AEBS will default to the slower 802.11b/g mode in order to talk to the AEX. To get any benefit from the wireless all the devices on the network need to support 802.11n. Replace the AEX with a new one and you will be in business.

  • Time Capsule and Old Airport Express Conflict

    Hello Everyone,
In my house i was using  my TC in Bridge Mode from my Router without a problem. Then i needed a ethernet connection in another room than the TC located. I thought i could use my old Airport Express for Bridging and using its Ethenet Output for my new IPTV receiver.
I started to configure via Airport Utility, everything was fine. New Airport Utility even helped me to complete install process. But then my TC just start continous disconnections, 20 seconds of greenlight and then again amber flashing, then greenlight then again same as my Airport Express. When i cut the power from Airport Express everything turns out to be OK. But when i put it on the outlet, they starting to disconnect in 30 sec intervals. I even tried to connect AE to my MBPr via Ethernet, within the 30 sec of greenlights i can get internet connection but then it drops.
I assume there is a conflict between these two.
Can someone help me to figure it out ?

So far, everything that you are telling us likely points to a defective AirPort Express.
There are no known conflict issues between a Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express.
Here is what I would suggest:
Power off the main router, TC and the rest of the network.....all devices
Reset the Express back to factory default settings so you start over again with new, fresh settings.
To do this, power off the Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for another 10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for it to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Power up your network again starting with the modem/router first. Wait a minute, then start the Time Capsule next. Keep starting devices one at a time about a minute apart until everything is powered back up.
Now try to reconfigure the Express again. Temporarily, locate the Express in the same room as the Time Capsule for the setup and test it that way.
As another test, temporarily connect a laptop to the Express using a spare Ethernet cable. Turn off the wireless on the laptop and test to make sure that you can get a good Internet connection on the laptop.
If you can.....then you know that the Express is operating correctly.
Now move the Express back to the location where it is needed and test that way.
    Report on your results.

  • Difference between the new and old airport express

Have an airport express bought in the summer of 2004. It extends my home network and have never had any trouble with it. (Still using system x3.9 ). Everything is stable. Calm. If I were to buy a new airport express today, do I understand right that it would not work with my current system? What's the difference between the newer airport express and the one I have?

I don't think there's much of a difference between the old Express and the new one. The only difference for sure, will probably be the Airport software, which is at its current version (I forget which). I too, bought my Airport Express when it first came out and I'm running software 6.1.1 on it, I think the newest is at 6.4 now or something like that.
Only reason why it wouldn't work with your system is most like due to the updated software. The tech specs doesn't really say 10.4 or higher is required, but it looks like it's suggested to use the features such as USB printing, etc. http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/specs.html

  • How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

    Thanks for the additional information.
Unfortunately, the AirPort Utility application in the Lion and Mountain Lion operating systems, which is used to configure the new Time Capsule does not support the older versions of the products that you have.
Even if it did, there are no settings on the older AirPorts to "Extend a wireless network", so they are not compatible with the new Time Capsule if you intend to extend the network only using wireless connections.
If you have the ability to connect each AirPort to the Time Capsule using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, it might be possible to use a complicated workaround to install an older version of AirPort Utility to configure the older AirPorts to work with the new Time Capsule.
If you have another Mac there that is using the Leopard or Snow Leoapard operating system, things would likely be simpler. I have not done this type of procedure to mix a new Time Capsule with older AirPorts, so I would not be able to say whether this would work or not.
