Old airport express not recognized by airport utility

Mine is a two part problem.  I was having issues with my old Airport Extreme Base Station.  I was dramatically losing data transfer speeds just 20-30 feet from its location.  I also noticed that signal strength no longer made it upstairs to the master bedroom.  I thought that after 6 years, it finally died on me. I purchased a brand new Netgear dual band 5G router and performance improved but I still am having difficulty with the non-5G band upstairs.  (I understand that 5G doesn't travel as far but is faster.  I thought it would be better to use my other network for devices upstairs.)  I still have the Airport Extreme and believe it or not, a really old Airport Express.  I've tried to use both to extend the range of my non-5G network and have failed miserably at both.  The Airport Extreme keeps giving me problems during set up to extend range and my Airport Utility doesn't even support the Express.  (see photo)
Any suggestions?

Two separate issues here:
I still have the Airport ExtremeThe AirPort Extreme would not be compatible with a Netgear router if you are trying to "extend" or "repeat" the signal from the Netgear wirelessly.
The reason.....Apple designed their "extend" feature to only work with other Apple routers, so it would be extremely unlikely that this feature would work with a 3rd party router for the purpose that you ask about.
If you are able to permanently connect the Extreme to the Netgear router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, then the Extreme could be configured to provide additional wireless coverage in that manner.
Airport Utility doesn't even support the Express.  (see photo)
That would be correct if you have the older A1084 or A1088 versions of the AirPort Express. To confirm, locate the model number on the side of the Express.....hard to see....you may need a magnifying glass to see the number.
It will take a Mac running the older Leopard or Snow Leopard operating system, or a PC with AirPort Utility installed to be able to administer the older Express.
Unfortunately, this version of the Express does not even have an "extend" feature, to it too would also need to be permanently wired to the Netgear or the Extreme if you need more wireless coverage from the Express.

  • AirPort Express not recognized by AirPort Utility, but connected to WiFi network

    Hi all,
This problem with AirPort Express is driving me nuts. I purchased AX to use it mainly for AirPlay, but I never managed to get it fully working.
It seems to be working fine for some time after initial boot, but then the AirPlay play option disappears from iTunes, and AirPort Utility (5.6.1) no longer finds any AirPort device.
I'm using a Planet WNRT-625G router as a base station (connected to my modem box), and I'm joining this WiFi network as a client (I understand extending the network does not work if it's not an AirPort Extreme station?). The WiFi is protected by a WPA2 pre-shared key, and I have tried using different channels. I have assigned a fixed IP to my AX... all to no avail.
In the status details of my router, I can see that the AX is connected, and I am able to ping my AX... but all Apple software cannot find its own device. Any clue what may be going wrong? How does the AirPort Utility find AirPort devices?
Thanks to all in advance for your help and ideas! Appreciate it.
    jfk-007

by design the AX will create a separate network when it starts up for the first time.
click on the airport icon in your menu bar. you should see something like Apple network XXXXXXXX. in order to set up the express, you will have to temporarily join its network !
you will get a message asking "do you really want to switch networks ?" and you do want to do that.  now you should see the AX in AU. click on the icon of the AX once to highlight it, then click continue.
follow onscreen instructions to either have the AX create a new or join an existing network.

  • Airport Express not recognized in Airport Utility

I have bought an Airport Express in order to play my iTunes music wirelessly. I managed to configure the Airport Express, plugging it to my wifi box, and everything is working fine. It appears in Airport Utility, and I can play the music through it.
The issue I have is that when I unplugg the Airport Express from my wifi box (hoping that it will connect to it wirelessly), I can't see a anymore my Airport Express in Airport Utility.. Which means that I cannot put the airport express anywhere else in my flat than next to the wifi box...
    Can anyone help me?
My wifi box is a classic O2 box. Thanks a lot!!

But just to make sure i understand how it is supposed to work:
    - do I actually need an airport extreme base station? or can i just plug my airport express, connect it to my speakers, and play itunes music wirelessly from my macbook pro? i was just looking at the picture in the user manual which seems to imply an extreme base station as well...
    - when configuring my airport express, i am plugging it to my wifi box with an ethernet cable. Should i instead connect it to my macbook pro with the ethernet??
    thanks a lot...

Airport Express not seen in Airport Utility! PleaseHelp!
Changing Utility version did not help.
I have successfully used my Airport Express 802.11n A1264 (1st gen.) to stream my iTunes music wireless to my living room stereo. Lately my Airport Express looses connection after every restart and does not show in the Airport Utility.
I run 10.6.8 on a Quad core Mac Pro. up to date on al software updates per 10.6.8 I use a 3rd gen. Airport Extreme 802.11n.

I actually did this by myself not into the computer but a secondary Ethernet port on myTripple play Fios modem.
The Express showed up right away. I did the reset and set it up in the utilities to join my existing wireless network. I don't remember all steps but at some point it asked me to put in internet info, I did not, and then it asked me if I wanted the amber flashing stoped so I could use it to stream music. I clicked yes and the set-up finished with a green light. After I disconected the Ethernet cable, plugged in the Express in my living room stereo wireless, it has been working normal since. I restarted a few times, green came right back.
James since you had the right idea I gave you the 10 points. Thank you for being helpful.

  • Airport Express not showing in Airport Utility, flashing Amber

I have 3 Airport Express units.  Two of the 3 work fine and show up in Airport Utility v.6 , but the third flashes amber and is not recognized in Airport Express.  I have tried soft and hard resets, and it always goes to a flashing amber light and is never reocgnized by Airport Utility.
If I pull down the Wifi icon and go to Airport Express, I get the following window:
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

The screenshot is still not coming through here.
Sorry, but I am not familiar with any of the model numbers that you have posted. North and South American versions of the older Express models will be A1084, A1088, or A1264.  The newest version of the AirPort Expess is A1392.
Regardless of the model number, all that you can really do is power up the Express for a few minutes, and hold in the reset button on the side of the device for 10 seconds. Then, release the reset button and allow a full minute for the Expess to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
If you still cannot "see" the Express in AirPort Utility, you either have a defective Express or a much older version that is not supported by AirPort Utillity 6.x.

  • Airport Express is recognized in AirPort Utility but will not connect.

I just bought a brand new Airport Extreme from Best Buy yesterday and have it set up perfectly. However, now my Airport Express (that I use to stream music to my stereo via Airtunes) will not connect. I have reset the Airport Express many times and it still won't connect. Here is what is crazy... the Airport Express is recoginized within the AirPort Utility, however when I click 'Continue' I get this message:
"Warning: Are you sure you want to switch wireless networks? Setting up this Apple wireless device requires switching networks. Switching networks may interupt your connection to the Internet"
I click 'OK' and I get this message "Connecting To Network' Connecting to network 'Apple Network 08ded7'. Please wait..."
Than the message disappears and I stay on the same screen I started from (I don't advance to the next setup screen... repeat and it does the same thing.
I've disabled my firewalls and still no luck. Also, the Airport Express shows an Orange light both on the device and the AirPort Utility.
Anyone know what the deal may be?
    Thanks in advance!!

Not sure why, but I installed the Airport Utility software on a differnt PC and was able to get the Airport Express configured and working just fine now. Hmmmmm...
So nice to have my music playing again - love Airtunes!

  • Old airport express not supported by Airport Utility

I have two first generation airport express units connected to a lat 2010 airport extreme. The units are not allowing for sustained airplay support or iTunes sharing. It is very inconsistent. Since my Mavericks update I cannot support those units run updates, diagnostics or even reset. What do I do?

Please check the model number on the side of each AirPort Express.
A 1st Gen AirPort Express is model number A1264, which is fully supported by Mavericks.
If you see model number A1084 or A1088, these are much older versions of the AirPort Express that were sold long before Apple began to use the Generation naming for AirPorts with the 802.11"n" wireless products in 2007.
You will need to have a Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard, or a PC....or borrow one for 5-10 minutes.....if you need to administer these older versions of the Express.

  • Airport express not supported in airport utility 6!

all of a sudden my airport express is not supported by APU 6. tried to install the old one, 5.6, but Lion 10.7.4 will not allow it.
so now what? I have to buy a new airport?

HPNY, unfortunately, if you click on the link shown within:
"This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at...."
it will take you to 5.6.1 - I fell for that one. That download does not work in Lion. You need to click on the link in bobwild's 06/12/2012 4.23pm post which takes you to 5.6 which is the Lion compatible software. Everything works for me now (thanks bobwild) but for an hour I had believed two previously workable 'old' Airport Expresses had suddenly become expensive and redundant legacy hardware.
I can understand Apple's introduction of parallel software but not their apparent failure to explain what's happening. This is actually triplicate software, not just parallel.  Thank goodness for the contributors on these forums doing Apple's work for them.

  • Airport express not displaying in airport utility

My airport express has been working just fine until today. I took it with me to Hong Kong, so that I could use it in my room to create a wireless network for my iPhone.  When I brought it home, I plugged it back in, and went to re-configure it for my family room. I use it for AirPlay mostly, as my speakers are plugged into it. After I went through the configuration change, there was an error, and the screen told me to close the Airport Utility and retry. Well, I've had no success since. I've reset the AE multiple times, and it still does not display in the airport utilty, and the AE itself flashes yellow.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    ted

Update:  After leaving the utilty on for a while, and plugging the AE into the wall near my time capsule, it finally showed up in the window. I was then able to configure it properly. I guess I just needed to be more patient.

  • Wired AirPort Express not showing in AirPort Utility or iTunes

So I was using my two AirPort Express's to wirelessly play iTunes throughout the house. Recently I wired the house with Cat6 and decided to wire in the AXs for more reliability. My AXs are 1st gen and are running 7.6.1. The problem is, when I turned the wireless off on them, they no longer show up in AirPort Utility or iTunes. I can get them to show in utility by selecting "Configure Other" then manually entering their IP address and password, but that's the only way and they never show in iTunes and disappear from Utility once I "Update". They are wired to a Gigabit switch which is wired to a Netgear router.
    Some additional Info:
Green light is on and solid
I can ping them and connect manually
    "Connect using ethernet" is set
Connection sharing "Off (Bridge Mode)" is set
I also want to extend my wireless range with them, so I've mirrored my wireless settings and used "Create a wireless network" (tried without doing this as well without luck)
    Enable AirPlay is checked
Netgear WNDR3700v2 Router Firmware version 1.0.0.36
    Keebox SGE08 Gigabit Ethernet Switch
    Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 x64
Any idea why I can't see or use them in iTunes and AirPort Utility?
    Thanks!
    -Jake

I wish that I could help you.  I'm having a similar problem, but wireless.
A couple months ago, my two Airport Expresses and my Apple TV disappeared from iTunes AirPlay. When I ran the Airport Utility, the Airports and Apple TV could not be located.  Interestingly, the Airports displayed a green light and all iDevices (iPod Touches and iPads) could connect to the Airports via AirPlay. Like wise, Airport Utility on the iDevices located the Airports. So I connected an Airport to the router via a Ethernet cable.  Once connected via wire and after a hard reset (with an orange light displayed) the Airport Utility found the wire-connected Airport.  I ran the utility to set up the Airport and a green light came on. Then the wire-connected Airport was visible on iTunes AirPlay. So I unplugged the Airplay and returned it to the stereo.  The green light came on, but now neither iTunes not the computer based Airport Utility could find it, even though the iDevices could. I repeated this process expecting a different outcome enough times to be certified insane.
So as I sit my computer based (Windows Vista) Airport Utility and computer based iTunes (the new version) cannot locate the Airport Expresses even though the iDevices readily see them. And their green lights display a connection to the network.
I even tried a forced connection by pasting the Airport's IP address (obtained using Airport Utility on iPad) into the manual configuration of the Airport Utility on the computer.  Oddly, once the IP address was entered, the computer based Airport Utility could see the specs of the Airport Express. But when I tried to save or conclude the Computer based Airport Utility configuration, I got an error.
Another odd thing is that the Remote App on my iDevices no longer works either. I can no longer connect to my iTunes library.  The remote simply can't find my Library at all. (I confirmed that Home Sharing is on).  But I noted that in iTunes is indicated that four devices work connected or linked to the Library.  So I had iTunes "forget" the devices "connected" for Remote and tried to reconnect. I got the number could on the iDevise but the devise never appeared in iTunes Devises for selection.
So whatever problem is preventing iTunes from locating my Airport, is also blocking my iDevises from connecting to iTunes.  Meanwhile, my iDevises can sync with iTunes (while wired - I never tried a wireless sync) and can connect via AirPlay to all Airports.
I've researched this for months and found nothing to work. I'm frustrated to the point of doing something drastic like dumping iTunes and finding some other player to manage my music and stream to my stereos. I'd rather not but the vast majority of my Library can't be played over my stereo.

  • Airport Express not recognized in iTunes- reset not working.

I have spent 2 days trying everything I've read here in these forums to RESET my Express.
I've done a soft & a hard reset each several times.
I've tried unplugging the Express overnight.
    I've upoaded new firmware.
I've discarded the new file created each time in the Airport configuration folder.
The reset seems to work....but then my Express is not connecting to iTunes. That is the new config shows up in the pop up menu in iTunes but does not complete the connection. I only use the box for remote connection of my music system. I've tried to set the Express up with each of the 2 choices in the AirPort Setup Assistant, ie. extending the range or a new network. Also, the light which is normally not flashing is indeed flashing. I've had Express functioning fine for over a year, this issue has happened only once before. Last time I was able to reconfigure successfully. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
My set up is as follows:
G4 destop with Airport base station, iBook wireless which I'm using to config. the Express box.

To set up the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a "Wireless Client," using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
    - Wireless Network: <type in your wireless network name or select it from the pop-up menu>
    - Wireless Security: Not enabled
OR, if you are using security on your wireless network:
    Security Options
    Change Wireless Security
    - Wireless Security: <Select the appropriate level of security for your wireless network: 40-bit WEP|128-bit WEP | WPA Personal | WPA Enterprise>
    - Password: <enter your wireless network security password or key>
    Music tab (optional)
    - Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
    - iTunes Speaker Name: <enter name of speaker for iTunes remote speaker list>

  • Airport express not listed in Airport admin utility, no music

I had my stereo connected to my airport express to stream music from my imac.
Its been working great for a year. About 2 days ago I did some updates and now
the light is blinking orange and no music.
I have tried to reset the AE with a paperclip but its still not showing in the Airport Admin Utility NOR the Airport Setup Assistant.
Not sure where to go from here....
    thanks Laura Drew

When I open the Airport Admin Utility, even when the AX is connected via ethernet, it is still not listed there. I hit rescan and it never surfaces. If I hit OTHER I get a screen that says 10.0.0.1 (if I remember correctly) then I put in the pw public.
10.0.0.1 would be the correct default LAN IP address for the AirPort Base Stations.
The screen says its rebooting the AX. The light turns green for apx. 2 seconds then turns back to blinking orange.
If I unplug it from the ethernet, I am able to see it under the airport icon.
And this would be normal when the AX is not connected to a network. I have assumed that your are using a Cable/DSL modem for your Internet connectivity and that you had not replaced the Ethernet cable between the modem and the AX just yet. So a blinking amber (orange) status light would be correct.
I choose it, plug the AX into the stereo but the light never turns green, and itunes says it can't find the AX.
Connecting the AX to a stereo would not change the status light. Again, remember a green status light indicates a valid network connection.
Maybe I will need to do it thru my router?? could my airport card have gone bad? but it seems I can connect to other networks (my neighbors)??
You can certainly set up the AX while it's connected to a router. I agree with you that it shouldn't be a problem with your AirPort Card.
So now I have to admit, I'm a bit baffled about your current network configuration. My confusion is, whether or not, you are using an Internet router, in addition to the AX.
Would you please confirm for me which of the following two network configurations, 1 or 2, that you currently desire...
    1) DSL/Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > [WAN port] Internet router [LAN port] > (Ethernet cable) > [Ethernet port] AX [Audio port] > (audio cable) > stereo, or
    2) DSL/Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > [Ethernet port] AX [Audio port] > (audio cable) > stereo
    ...or something else?
In other words, are you using the AX for both your Internet connectivity/iTunes streaming or another router for the Internet and just using the AX for streaming iTunes?

  • Airport Express not detected in Airport Utility

I replaced my 1st Gen Airport Extreme Base Station (n) with a new 5th generation.  I also have an older Airport Express (n) which I used to connect to the Television.  After configuring the new Base Station, the AE is not even detected by Airport Uitlity.  AE is only 5 feet away, so clearly within range.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Dave

Is AE blinking in Amber? If so, go open your wireless networks, and you should see your AE stated with the Airport network name including 'SSID', .  Choose that one from the list to connect even if the AE is not connected to your modem, then the light on AE will turn to Green and it should appear in airport utility as well.
Bascially, I think by connecting it as wireless network, it seems to make the airport utility to recognize it. After configuring the AE as you want, you can reselect the proper wireless network again to connect to internet. I guess, in your case it would be the airport extreme base station.
This was how I got mine to work(appear to the airport along with the airport extreme base station), so hope it would be helpful for you.

  • Airport Express not showing up in Utility

Hello, Just got an Airport Express from a friend (not sure which model).
Trying to set up a WDS, however, I cannot even get started as it does not even show up in the utility.
My Airport Extreme N is the only device that shows. Internet works fine. Wireless works fine on our Macbook, so I know the signal is there.
I tried the hard Reset, and still nothing. I've tried to "ReScan" several times as well.
Any help would be much appreciated!!!
    Thanks

To facilitate the WDS set up, try the following:
o Perform a "hard" reset on the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) & a "factory default" reset on the AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) before setting up the WDS.
o Place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete.
o To avoid having to "switch" wireless networks during the WDS setup, attach the remote base station, via an Ethernet cable, to the main base station.
o Be sure to jot down the MAC addresses for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS as these will be required during the setup.
o When enabling wireless encryption, configure the remote first and the main last.

  • HT1515 Airport Express not showing in AirPort Utility

I have a wireless G version of the Airport Express that can not be seen by Airport Utility version 5.5.3.  I have done many Factory Resets, but still unable to setup the Airport Express.  Please Help.

If the Ethernet port on the Express is not being used to connect to a modem or other router, then it may help to temporarily connect an Ethernet cable from your PC to the Express.
Once the Express has been setup and updated, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable.
If you are still having difficulty, click the File menu in AirPort Utility and then click Configure Other
Enter the following in the address box:     10.0.1.1
Enter the following in the password box:    public
