Old airport express not supported by Airport Utility

I have two first generation airport express units connected to a lat 2010 airport extreme. The units are not allowing for sustained airplay support or iTunes sharing. It is very inconsistent. Since my Mavericks update I cannot support those units run updates, diagnostics or even reset. What do I do?

Please check the model number on the side of each AirPort Express.
A 1st Gen AirPort Express is model number A1264, which is fully supported by Mavericks.
If you see model number A1084 or A1088, these are much older versions of the AirPort Express that were sold long before Apple began to use the Generation naming for AirPorts with the 802.11"n" wireless products in 2007.
You will need to have a Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard, or a PC....or borrow one for 5-10 minutes.....if you need to administer these older versions of the Express.

After running EtreCheck got "Bluetooth: Old - Handoff/Airdrop2 not supported" .
I'm trying to get airdrop to work with my MacBook air. How to update the bluetooth if possible.

Unfortunately, you cannot update bluetooth.

all of a sudden my airport express is not supported by APU 6. tried to install the old one, 5.6, but Lion 10.7.4 will not allow it.
so now what? I have to buy a new airport?

it will take you to 5.6.1 - I fell for that one. That download does not work in Lion. You need to click on the link in bobwild's 06/12/2012 4.23pm post which takes you to 5.6 which is the Lion compatible software. Everything works for me now (thanks bobwild) but for an hour I had believed two previously workable 'old' Airport Expresses had suddenly become expensive and redundant legacy hardware.
I can understand Apple's introduction of parallel software but not their apparent failure to explain what's happening. This is actually triplicate software, not just parallel. Thank goodness for the contributors on these forums doing Apple's work for them.

Airport Express not supported by Airport Utility

I have a few Airport express around the house and since I have updated to OS 10.8.4 i now get the message "This version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station. Go to AirPort Service and Support for more information."
So I have gone to Airport service and support and nothing is mentioned or listed.
Does anyone know why I am getting this message? They are all 1st gen airport express stations.
It is really annoying as my house has been set up round these and now none of them work.
I have reset and restarted them without any success. I have connected via ethernet etc

Load in 5.6 utility.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
2. Download and install unpkg.
http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.

Old Airport Express not supported

I own 2 Airport Express devices. Both are ganged together in one chain. The newer one is near my cable modem and the older one is at the far end of my house, placed there in order to strengthen the signal.
This worked well for several months; however, the older Express is no longer recognized. I get the following error message:

You can use AirPort Utility 5.6 to manage all of your devices. It is much more functional than 6.0.

Suggest that you keep both 5.6 and 6.0 on your Mac since you will not be able to delete 6.0.

Apple AirPort Express - not supported by BT Home H...

The mystery of the vanishing AirPort Express makes the above conclusion inevitable. I have two, old and new, solely for iTunes music distribution. Even when they do show on my wireless network, I get the famous AirPort Utility error 10057.
They do work from time to time, sometimes for long periods; then resetting the Home Hub usually brings them back (or not).
I'm so exasperated by the Home Hub that in the recycling bin it goes. I'll buy a proper wireless router.

Getting the AirPorts configured was not Apple-easy. The AirPort Utility does not like a thing called "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" - find your wireless adaptor Properties via Network and Sharing Center and uncheck the offending item. Beware, Windows 7 homegroups like it, so you may have to switch it on again later. Pro-tem, that should get your AirPort found by the utility.
This left me with working AirPorts which disappear from the network when not used - so you have to switch them off and on every time you want to use them.
The only solution I've come across (set Wireless Security to WPA2 Personal on AirPort and Router) hasn't worked...

Airport Express not Supported by Leopard?

Total newbie, just tried to set up airport express hub, installer says the version of Mac OS X (Leopard) on my machine isn't supported and thus airport can't be installed. Any advice?

Hello JPunk. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Sounds like you tried to install the software that came on the CD with your AirPort Express Base Station (AX). Fortunately, it's not needed (nor will it work under Leopard). You will find the updated AirPort Utility in your /Applications/Utilities folder on your Mac.

Airport Express not showing up in Utility after wireless disabled

Hi everybody,
Last night I made the mistake of disabling wireless on my Airport Express. It had worked perfectly before, but now that I want to re-enable wireless, the Express won't show up in Utility! Does anybody have any tips as to how to get it to show up in Utility again? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the discussions forum jmpstar.
If you disabled wireless, Airport Utility will have no way to find it, wirelessly. You'll have to reset it by holding in the reset button until the LED flashes rapidly. You'll then be able to configure it again using Airport Utility.

Airport Express not being "seen" by utility.

My Airport Express is connected via ethernet to my home network with the wireless disabled. Lately the unit has been dropping off the network and nothing I try now will get The Airport Utility to "see" the device.
I have event tried resetting several times, going back to earlier system setups, entierning the IP address manually. Nothing works.
Any suggestions?

The problem could be with the Express, but intermittent problems of the sort you are describing are very rare. Their failure mode is almost always accompanied with a dark LED.
Try a different port on your router, a different router, a different switch it is connected to one, or a different cable. Any failure among the many links in that chain can be the cause.
If the Express fails in the same manner while connected directly to a computer with a known good Ehternet patch cable, only then would I condemn the Express. Conversely, you could substitute another Express known to be reliable.

Suddenly, iPhoto "thinks" it's on my OLD iMacG5 and not supported?

iPhoto won't open and the message says "You can't open the application iPhoto because it is not supported on this type of Mac. This is an iMac 21.5. I THINK, for some reason, iPhoto software isn't operating correctly? I've been using it without incident since we brought it home in April....

If you have the 'pointers' to those songs in the Music part of your iTunes library then iTunes assumes that you still have the tracks somewhere (even if the actual music files are not on your computer). Try deleting the 'pointer' to one of them from your library and see if it then shows in the 'not on this computer' section for re-downloading (assuming that it's still in the store).

Old Airport Utility sees Express, New does not

New Airport Express. Comes with old Utility on CD. My son's MacBook that hadn't updated to 5.3 easily sees my express but my other 2 macs that had updated to 5.3 couldn't see it. I configured with my son's old Utility and instantly, the other 2 Mac's saw the express. APPLE THERE MAY BE A PROBLEM WITH THE LAST UPDATE. Thank goodness my son hadn't updated yet.

Airport Express not showing up in Utility

Hello, Just got an Airport Express from a friend (not sure which model).
Trying to set up a WDS, however, I cannot even get started as it does not even show up in the utility.
My Airport Extreme N is the only device that shows. Internet works fine. Wireless works fine on our Macbook, so I know the signal is there.
I tried the hard Reset, and still nothing. I've tried to "ReScan" several times as well.
Any help would be much appreciated!!!

To facilitate the WDS set up, try the following:
o Perform a "hard" reset on the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) & a "factory default" reset on the AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) before setting up the WDS.
o Place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete.
o To avoid having to "switch" wireless networks during the WDS setup, attach the remote base station, via an Ethernet cable, to the main base station.
o Be sure to jot down the MAC addresses for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS as these will be required during the setup.
o When enabling wireless encryption, configure the remote first and the main last.

Airport Express not visable with Admin utility, but pingable and...

Can be seen when I search for it in the admin utility. The Airport has started dropping constantly, and sometimes itunes doesnt see it but the device remains 100% pingable at all times.
The green light is on, and its connected fine.
Any reason why windows has issues seeing it (and then itunes fails)

I have this exact same problem. It's like something spontaneously just ceased to work inside the AE unit. I don't understand it.
I tried updating the firmware to 6.3 and updated Airport on the G4 to 4.2.1, but nothing has changed. If anything, the problem seems to have gotten worse (sometimes connecting -- > NEVER connecting).
All the forums I have read seem to think this problem has yet to be solved by Apple. They recommend downloading iStumbler or a utility to monitor your networks and keep them "alive" by constantly pinging with a low-level signal. That hasn't worked either.

Since upgrade of aperture, my photos from a year ago are not in library. On time machine, they are there, but I cant transfer them to todays aperture library because it says the old version is not supported. Please help!!

You will be restoring the old Aperture library from TM, having it on the Desktop is fine.
Once the restore is finished you will have the old Aperture library in that folder. Now you want to open this library by double clicking it (the library). This will open Aperture on it and Aperture will tell you the library needs to be upgraded. Let Aperture upgrade the library.
Once the Library is upgraded to the latest version of Aperture you can do want you want with it. Once you have gotten to this point if you still need help post back.
