Old and generic icon or thumbnail removal

Dear all,
Over the years I used different ways or softwares to generate thumbnails in my images library. Before OSX 10.6, that was the way to go because the finder is not really good to practically showing them.
But now with OSX 10.6 the icons are generate fast and if you want at a resolution of 512 x 512 great to explore image folder.
The problem is for the images that have thumbnails created in the past by different ways, normally they was generated at 128 x 128 and they look ugly, a solution is to command+i on the image and delete the icon, work great, but you need to do it one by one for each image.
I have more than 10,000 images and the 3/4 of them have a generic icon, I try to remove the icons in batch, but every thing I tried fail, I tried software for removing the resource fork, some softwares for generating icon said the can remove icon also but this is not working nether.
I'm stuck, did someone have a solution?
Thanks

first, you can use CoCoThumbX. it can batch remove custom thumbnails. also, you can do it in batches by hand as follows. select a bunch of files in finder and enter commandoptioni. this will open just one info window for all of them. select the icon in the upper left corner and hit delete.

  • Applications Won't Open and Generic Icons

Odd problem: the computer (PowerMac G4 Dual 450 with 10.3.9) boots up fine, but all icons have reverted to their generic form and no applications actually open - every app either bounces once and then stops or doesn't even bounce. I tried to use Disk Warrior, but it can't boot off of the CD - it hangs on the grey apple screen. If I try and open a .dmg I get a "no mountable systems found." Taking the preferences out of the library folders didn't work, and neither did trashing the font preferences.
The only thing I can think of that I did before the problem started happening was put in a USB memory stick and enable Fast User Switching, but neither had an immediately obvious effect.
It's looking like I'm going to have to try an archive and reinstall, but if anyone has any other ideas I'd love to hear them.
    Thanks in advance.

Try this and see if it works.

Here are some possible reasons for this problem.
    1. Recent Update: Download and reapply the most recent Combo Update: Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9 or Mac OS X Update 10.4.2 Combo
    2. Font duplicates: Please read the articles by Kurt Lang and J.Otava here: Kurt Lang: Font Management in OS X Panther and J.Otava: Fonts & Apple Type Services
    3. Corrupted preferences:
Go to Users/Your_Name/Library/Preferences and trash the files:
    - com.apple.ATS.plist
    - com.apple.BezelServices.plist
Restart. If this did not help, go to Users/Your_Name/Library and drag the folder Preferences to the desktop. Restart and see if this solved the problem
    4. Permissions:
    Symptoms:
    a. Only Apple applications affected
    b. Also happens when you switch to a new user.
    c. First appeared after update to 10.3.4, 10.3.5 or 10.3.6
This usually happens if you do not repair permissions before you update to 10.3.4 or later. There are (unconfirmed) hints that corrupted cache files might also contribute to this problem. You can clean caches with programs like Cocktail or Panther Cache Cleaner. The only solution I am aware of is to do an Archive&Install.
You also might want to read this article: Applications don't work after reinstalling Mac OS X
Remember: Repair permissions before and after an update!
If none of the above solves the problem you might have to do an Archive&Install:
    1. Insert the Install CD 1 and reboot while holding down the c-key
    2. Once you are booted go to the menu and select disk utility
    3. Repair the disk and Repair permissions!
    4. Quit disk utility and proceed with the installation
    5. Under "options" select "Archive&Install" and check the box "keep user and network data".
    6. Install Panther
    7. Restart
    8. Go to the folder Application/Utilities and run disk utility to repair permissions again.
    9. Download (or open if you downloaded before) Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9 or Mac OS X Update 10.4.2 Combo and install it.
    10. Restart and repair permisssions
    11. Go to the Apple menu and select "Software Update"
    12. Install all missing updates and restart.
    13. Repair permissions

  • Stars and Other Icons on Thumbnails Disappeared

I'm having an annoying and confounding problem.
The little icons on my thumbnails (i.e. Starts, Referenced, Metadata, Keyword, etc.) have all disappeared. It is making my book building quite difficult.
Is this a simple "feature" that I accidentally switched?
    Help would be appreciated.

pressing the Y or U keys will toggle the metadata overlays for both the viewer and the browser.

  • CR2 generic icon in Adobe Bridge instead of a thumbnail

Hi, Since buying Lightroom3 I find that I can only see a CR2 generic icon in Adobe Bridge instead of a thumbnail when I browse the folder containing my RAW files. Loading Lightroom3 may just be a coincidence.
I am using Canon cameras up to 5Dmk2 and PS4 software on my iMac. I have downloaded PS 11.0.2, Bridge3.00 and Camera Raw 5.7.0.213.
I have purged the cache for the folder. I have downloaded DNG converter 6.10.250 and processed the file but still cannot see the thumbnails.
Within Bridge preferences the Camera Raw Preferences is a light gray and cannot be accessed. Is this normal?
If I trash CS4 completely would I be able to reload from the original Cd and try again.
    Grateful for any advice. Alex

  • Why having displayed both generic icons for the PDF and JPEG files and automatic preview of the JPEG files in an ordinary folder are mutually exclusive in Win7?

    In Win7 Pro all my:
PDF documents, with the 'Large Icons' option chosen in the View tab, display contents of their first page with a tiny thumbnail in the icon's lower right corner, instead of a generic PDF icon.
JPEG files show Icon size photos, instead of a generic Nero 9 PhotoSnap Essentials icon.
Folders containing the JPEG photos, however, automatically show preview, when opened, which is desirable feature.
I found that the Win7 option "Always show icons never thumbnails" in the View tab: Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options, (where ironically the present 'thumbnails' have nothing to do with 'Thumbnails' from the View option in WinXP), causes the unwanted effects described in points 1 & 2, when unchecked.
Checking this option solves the problem of the PDF and Nero icons. This time, however, I can only see a Nero 9 PhotoSnap Essentials icons, instead of photos preview on opening of any standard folder with the JPEG photos.
Did I make a mistake somewhere or maybe Microsoft made changes in Win7 with respect to WinXP, which make it impossible to have both the features working at the same time?

    Hi,
You can install the Win 8.1 software drivers using this link.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=4323648&task=&
Once installed, it should have the same features as the Win 7 drivers for scanning.

  • I have just updated to ISO 8 and my app icons are not displaying the correct icon but just a generic icon. Anyone had a similar problem?

I have just updated to ISO 8 and my app icons are not displaying the correct icon but just a generic icon. Anyone had a similar problem?

That happened to me for a short period of time after I updated. It didn't do it with all apps, but it did it with a few here and there. Try a few basic standard troubleshooting steps. Close all apps and reset the iPad.
In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
You can also try resetting all settings. You will not lose any data, but most of the device settings will have to be entered in the settings app again. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all Settings.
Hopefully it will be something simple, but don't rule out restoring the iOS software, if nothing else works, but start with this easy stuff first.

  • Display JPEG files not on desktop as thumbnails, not generic icons

I understand from previous forum entries that bringing up menu with command-J and checking "show icon preview" will display image files ON THE DESKTOP as thumbnails. This has worked fine for me. However, most of my image files are not on the desktop.
How do I get the system to display all JPEGs and other images not on the desktop as thumbnails. These are in folders, either on the startup volume or on other volumes.
My son who is a PC user was surprised that my Mac image folders contained all those generic icons and not thumbnails, like he is used to on his PC.
Hope there is an easy answer to this, and I greatly appreciate your help.

I have continued working on this issue since I posed the question, and discovered that I have to have my images in "icon display", not "list display" (which I have usually used).
When I changed to icon display, the menu from command-j allowed me to display all my icons as thumbnails.
The menu (command-j) from the list display doesn't give that option, so I was stumped until I stumbled on to this detail.
Thanks again to all who have helped me in the past on these forums. You're the best.

  • File- open displays only generic icons for psd and raw

Following a hard drive crash, I had to reinstall Photoshop CS5.  I've updated to the latest version (12.0.1) and updated my NVIDA GEForce 8600 driver to the latest from Dell. This is on a Dell XPS 410, 4 GB memory and hundreds of gigs of hard drive space. When I use the File-->Open menu and dialog to look for images to use, while JPG and most TIF icons are thumbnail icons, the CR2, CRW, PSD and DNG icons are all generic. There is no problem in Bridge or in LightRoom. Opening the image in Photoshop doesn't seem to help.
While I obviously have options, when I just need to go looking quickly for an image I know is there, this makes it difficult to find. What can I do to get those previews back?
    Thanks in Advance

Back up all data before continuing.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    mv Des*/.DS_Store .Trash/
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered. You can then quit Terminal.
Relaunch the Finder, then empty the Trash. Test.

  • F4v & flv show as generic icons and are not scaled

    Hi!
I'm using Bridge CS4 for some years and since the reinstall of my operating system (Vista Business 32bits) and of CS4, all the f4v and flv files are showing as generic file icons. That means that I do not get the video thumbnail for f4v or flv files in the Content panel. This was working before my reinstall.
Also, the f4v or flv videos show only the top left corner in the preview panel. This has something to do with scaling: Bridge shows the preview of a 640x480 f4v or flv video normally but the 1920x1080 videos are not scaled.
I also use MOV files and for these, I get a scaled preview and a thumbnail in the Content panel.
Any clue how I can get back the video thumbnails for f4v and flv files as well as the scaling?

    @ Curt Y,
I really appreciate your input. It brought me one step further in any case.
I made a couple of screenshots with a before and after state. Please note that the before and after pictures where made on two computers with different screen resolution, one laptop I am now trying to fix and one desktop (this will show in the degree of scaling of the previews in Bridge). These two computers, however, display the same problem regarding the flv and f4v files.
    This is before: (desktop, unfixed):
    - a flv shows as generic icon, in this case the VLC Media Player icon
    - the flv preview is not scaled (I see only part of the picture, the top left corner)
This is what VLC Media Player shows with the same file (desktop and laptop):
    - the flv plays
    - I get the full picture (scaled)
This is after the install of K-Lite (laptop, partially fixed):
    - the flv and f4v files have a thumbnail (and not a generic icon anymore)
    - the preview is still not scaled (to avoid confusion please note here the resolution difference between the laptop and desktop screen: I see less on the laptop but it's normal. So I get a smaller top left corner with just the sky and no house).
For my flv file, G Spot shows exactly the same codec and warning as your screenshot with barsandtone.flv.
So, now I have thumbnails. I just need to find a way to tell Bridge to scale the preview...

  • After I modify a photograph, it's thumbnail appear as a generic icon, why? iMac 10.10.2

When I open a folder containing photos displayed as picture thumbnails, after editing a photo (in Elements 13), when I save the changes, the thumbnail picture disappears and is replaced by a generic icon.  My computer is an iMac 5K running 10.10.2

    Thanks for trying to help.
I am using Icons view but the problem is the same in any of the view options.
I tried changing the size of the icons it makes no difference.
I will try to include two screenshots to show the issue.
Screenshot 1 shows the finder folder open with 11 photo thumbnails in it.
Screenshot 2 shows the same folder after I have modified some of the photos using PSE 13.  I changed several of the photos and two of their thumbnails are now generic icon thumbnails whilst others have normal picture thumbnails.

  • How do I change the desktop Icon for an external hard drive?  I have gone to "Get Info" and tried dragging and dropping  several formats of pictures and the icon changes to the generic image of that file type.

how can I change the desktop icon for an external hard drive.  Using LaCies and Dimple hard drives.

One of the things I've found with OS X (at least with Snow Leopard, which is my first excursion into OS X), is that all too often the thumbnail displayed on a file, whether a file created or one downloaded, is a false thumbnail. That is, when you do a Get Info on the file the icon in the upper left is the generic icon for that file type, rather than the thumbnail displayed in Finder. Makes it a bit difficult to copy.
Apparently Finder uses Preview in the background to generate the displayed thumbnail without actually creating one.
What I've resorted to doing, particularly with graphic images, is to process them with GraphicConverter - I have its prefs set to automatially add thumbnails and previews. With an individual file this means opening it in GC and doing a Save As. However, a much easier and faster way is when there are two or more such files; I put them in a common folder and drop the folder onto GC. GC then opens them in a catalog view, in the process adding real thumbnails and previews to each automatically. Doesn't take long to do several hundred files that way.

I knew I'd seen the solution you've provided somewhere - either in MacWorld or MacFormat - but couldn't remember the Gatekeeper bit!
I shall save it somewhere VERY safe now in case this happens again …

Where can I buy a larger hard drive for my late 2008, 15" macbook pro?  From reviewing questions and answers on the support community it would appear that having Apple remove the old and install the new hard drive is recommended.  But how/where?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install the new hard disk yourself if you want to. You just need a 2'5" SATA II hard drive, which is compatible with your MacBook Pro. You can buy one at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ You can filter hard drives by computer, so press a "Click to view all...", choose your computer in the sidebar and it will give you the compatible hard drives.
There are different brands for the MacBook Pro. The most recommended are HGST and Seagate, which have good reputation. A 7200 rpm hard drive will give you extra performance

  • What can I do when I'm trying to reinstall iTunes and I'm being told that the old bonjour file can't be removed eventhough I managed to remove the bonjour folder?

Ok - I'm using MS Vista. I wanted to update iTunes for a long time but it always failed because it said something about missing access to the Network where Bonjour is stored. I figured that I wanted to solve this now once and for all by reinstalling the current version of iTunes. This didn't work, because I was being told that the old version of Bonjour could not be removed. Therefore I tried to remove Bonjour and after a long quest I found a way to (seemingly) remove it. There's no more Bonjour folder in my Programm Files. Anyway - I tried to install iTunes again and it didn't work. It told me that there was still the old Bonjour that could not be removed.
I'm at my witts end. I'd really like to use iTunes, especially since I also own an iPhone.
I'm thankful for your replies and send you many greetings from Switzerland!

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing iTunes again. Does the install go through properly now?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)
