Old backup of a different OSX suddenly lost...!

I had a TM backups of different OSes (actually the same Mac, but after an OS reinstallation) on one ext.harddrive. While I was trying to acces the old OS backup (through option click>tm icon) the name of that folder (= the old computer name) sudenly changed to the the current computer name (= the name of the other folder = current OS backup) and after I reconnected the drive again, there only was the current OS backup.
In practice, that means – I had had two backup folders there:  1.) nameX (old OS) and 2.) nameY (current OS). Suddenly the nameX changed to nameY and so I had 2 duplicate folders of the same content there and after reconnecting the harddrive only one was present – that means the old backup is gone now...
How can I access/retrieve the now-invisible backup?
Thanks alot.
any help appreciated....
Jakub.

Provided you have not reformatted or deleted your old backup, you should be able to recover it, but you will essentially be turning your old backup into the new one.  Pondini has created an excellent guide for this:

I cannot start my old powerbook g4. It makes no sounds - drive, etc. It was working fine one day, then I left it dormant/off for about a week, but plugged in to transformer to keep it "alive". Upon trying to start up again, nothing.
The battery test button initiates the first light blinking rapidly for a few seconds, second light barely visible  - no other lights flash. Power cabe and transformer are delivering yellow-green glow when plugged into the mac.
    Battery replacement?
    Power transformer ?

  • "Two" Computers - Removing an old backup

My iMac has just come back from being repaired, and it has had it's motherboard replaced. Because of this, Time Machine seems to think that it's a different computer from before, and has hence taken another complete backup. I'm wondering if there's a way to merge the two backups, or - failing that - remove the backup of the "old" machine. I've tried deleting the old backup, and renaming it (both through Finder and through Terminal) but didn't seem to be able to do it.
The reason I want to remove this old backup is that my Time Machine drive isn't huge and I'm worried that because it's seeing the old backup as a different computer it won't remove files from it as it runs out of space.

I'd rather not change my MAC address if possible as I've had to register the current one to get access to my University network, and changing it will mean having to mess around trying to switch back to the old one.
Are there any other ways? I'm tempted at the moment to just format the partition and start again (there's only a month worth of backups on there at the moment anyway).

My contacts on my old Iphone I gave a family member were deleted then synced to icloud.  My current iphone lost all its contacts when it next synced.  I retreived a 6mth old backup to get my contacts, but I want my recent messages back, any help?

The "system" performed as designed. All devices syncing to one iCloud account are kept in common sync. The idea is that all such devices belong to one user. Different users should have different iCloud accounts.  Once your contacts were edited, all devices were updated as well and subsequent backups (from yours and her device) reflected the changed contacts (and any other data that may have been edited like calendars). Your first task is to change your daughter over to a new account before she makes other changes.
The only way I see for getting back contacts is to restore them from a time machine backup, assuming you also have a Mac included in the account which syncs the contacts. However, I'm not sure whether time machine includes contacts from iCloud along with those that are local, "on my Mac".
Otherwise the deleted contacts are gone.

  • Time Machine lost all old backups

I have an iMac 24" with a 750GB drive that only has about 200GB full. I have been using Time Machine to do backups onto a 400GB hard drive, and it has been working fine for a few weeks. Last week I copied 250GB of material onto my Mac's HD (as a backup of an external drive), but set that folder NOT to be backed up in TM (this worked fine). Then yesterday I renamed that folder... and Time Machine tried to include it in the next backup... and that backup failed, of course, since there is now more that 400GB of material to backup. Ooops... I have put that renamed folder onto the exclude list.
BUT, in the process of failing to backup, Time Machine appears to have deleted all of the previous backups from the 400GB Time Machine drive. The weeks of backups are gone. THAT was very disappointing. I thought Time Machine wasn't supposed to delete old backups without warning me (I have that option checked). Why did it do that??
(Happily, I have also been making backups manually onto other drives, and my main drive is still happy, so no files were lost... but I want to understand what happened before I trust my backups to Time Machine. I realize that I accidentally asked Time Machine to do an impossible thing by suddenly dropping that extra 250GB folder into its world, but why did it fail so ungracefully and delete all my old backups? This could be very bad if it happed to someone who was counting on Time Machine.)

This is TRULY a serious software design bug IMO and should be reported to Apple via their Feedback procedure. I also have seen this bug and I've reported it to Apple. You should also to add more weight to the bug report and to hopefully have Apple resolve this soon for all of us.
TM does fail to alert the user with a request that to free up backup space some older backups will need removing. Not only this but it silently removes the oldest backups trying to free up space only to find there's still insufficient space. This is clearly a very serious problem as you've discovered.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
You cannot download a backup from iCloud, the only way to access it is to restore to the backup with your new phone, which you should have done when you first connected it. If you restore now, you will lose all the new information you have added to your new phone.

Can i reftieve them or not. and why doenst Apple provide such informaition to users for new restorations?

NO... What did you expect the phone to do when you restore from a backup.

  • How to remove old backup files from time machine? Lion OSx

Time Machine will automatically delete back-ups as the need for space arises. If you want to delete a certain file (application, document, whatever) and have it gone for good you can do that as well.

  • Time machine is deleting all my old backups after moving to different iMac

Hi - I had to move my data to a different machine and so I prepared a different iMac (early 2008). This is what I did:
I booted into Snow Leopard from my DVD
    erased the HD
    installed SL 10.6
    booted into SL
ran software update to upgrade to 10.6.8 (to get the App Store)
    installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2
used Migration Asistant to restore all my data, apps, and settings from my time machine backup
This all worked fine and at some point time machine asked me whether to inherit the time machine history. I confirmed this and all seemed fine until I noticed that time machine was backing for a long time and a lot of space was being freed on the time machine volume. I found that it was deleting all my old backups. Before I had data going back to 2010 but now I only have backups left from JAN 2012 onwards.
After some searching I found the excellent Pondini time machine site and performed the actions under B6 ("Reconecting" to your backups):
    exxi:~ michael$ sudo tmutil inheritbackup /Volumes/tm2/Backups.backupdb/exxi
    Password:
    exxi:~ michael$ sudo tmutil associatedisk -a / /Volumes/tm2/Backups.backupdb/exxi/2013-02-03-150320/exxi_hd
I restarted the backup after applying the command above but it still is deleting old backups. I tried the same comand by associating it with an older backup but still it keeps deleting my backups.
What can I do to stop it from erasing all my backups?
    Cheers
    Michael

Unless you'd signed up to iTunes Match then they won't be in the Cloud, only music purchased from iTunes (if you are in a country where music can be re-downloaded) will be there. Have you not still got it on your computer and/or on a backup which you can use to sync it back to the iPad ?

  • Time Machine lost old backups :(

I thought I would try doing Time Machine over wireless connected to my AE base station so I connected my existing Time Machine drive to the AE and tried to make it pick up where it left off, which it would not do. It wants to start fresh, which I do not want since I don't want to lose all my old backups. I tried to reconnect it the old way and it doesn't pick up where it left off anymore. I can view my old backups but now I cannot add to them. It wants to start fresh this way too now. Is there any way to fix this? I want to pick up where Time Machine left off.

To answer why connecting your USD HDD to your AirPort Extreme doesn't allow you to continue your Time Machine backup, well the backups to a NAS (effectively what you are doing by attaching the HDD to AXBS) are saved as a sparsebundle as opposed to your current file structure.
To use your HDD connected directly to your Mac, try opening TM Preferences and Change Disk. Can you select the USB HDD now?
Thank you. That explains where this odd folder on my HD came from, but it has a little red "x" in the corner. When I tried switching to backing up off of the AirPort Extreme base station I selected Change Disk. I used Change Disk again when I connected it back with the FW800 and it lets me view my old back up, but neither method (shared or wired) allows me to continue my old backup. I don't have enough space on the drive to waste another 80GB on another full backup AND keep my old backups, which happened to come in handy recently, the reason I wanted to switch to the shared drive so I could do it more often.
I'm still unable to continue where I left off. It still wants to do a new full backup

  • Getting iTunes restore to recognize an old backup

    Hi,
I am hoping that you can help me: I want to get iTunes to recognise an old backup of my iPad so that I can restore it onto the iPad and retrieve some files that are precious and would otherwise be lost. Afterwards, I will want to restore my iPad's current settings.
    Explanation:
I accidentally deleted my apps from my iPad while trying to back it up onto my Mac. I thought it was a good opportunity to reorder the apps so downloaded only the ones I really wanted and reorganised them. I then realised that the data for my journal for the last two years and the flashcards application into which I had laboriously typed 1000 Mandarin words and phrases had been deleted. I tried restoring from backup but found that iCloud only holds the last one or two backups but some days had already passed and my old data had been overwritten. I then looked at the iTunes backup and didn't have one; I'd asked my son's Mac expert friend to clear some space on the iMac so he had removed old backups. For a while I thought I had no chance then I remembered that my Timemachine kept old backups so I looked at this forum to find out where iTunes backups are stored and searched my Timemachine archive for the files. I have now restored the data from the mobilesync directory from a few months ago but I found that I had to create the ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ directory. I put the backup files into this but the backup did not appear in iTunes. Is there a way I can get iTunes to see the backup files and restore them or is there something that will let me view the files directly?
    Thanks!
    Tim

    Hi
I have the same problem. the back up file I want to use to restore my iphone will not "show up" in itunes. I know where to find the file (and have made a copy of it) and I know where itunes places the backup files each time itunes makes a new (incremental) backup.
What /i dont know (and WISH i did know) is how to force itunes to "see" the backup file I want it to use....
    What I've tried so far:
1 moving all the "wrong" back up files out of the mobilesync folder and leaving onle the "correct" backup file in the folder  - but ituness "sees" nothing, i.e. the mobilesync folder appears to itunes to be empty.
2 moving the "correct" backup file to a different folder and then copying it back into the the mobilesync folder - but itunes still won't "see" the correct backup file.
It's really really sad and frustrating. I spent from 2pm till 2 am on it yesterday ...
My mishap was caused by a failed backup due to insufficient space on my hard drive... this meant that itunes aborted the backup, I then had to make space on the hard drive and try again. I had to do this several times... anyway, I know where the "correct" backup file was eventually placed, have copied etc (as above) but nothing I do results in itunes being able to "see" it and therefore allow me to use it as the source file from which to backup my iphone.
If there's anyone out there who thinks that can help me.........???? - I'd be truly impressed and deeply grateful.
