Old battery and inaccurate battery guage

My 3 year old Powerbook battery seems to be on its last legs.. I am only getting a little over an hours usage before it poops out. What bugs me though is that the battery gauge in the menu bar doesn't reflect this.. it tells me I am at something like 80% when my PB puts itself to sleep due to the battery being drained. I have 'calibrated' the battery, but that doesn't have any effect.
Is this just the way it works? I would have expected that the battery gauge would go down quicker, in sync with the battery, but it seems the gauge is out of sync with the charge left in the battery.
A second question - my battery info shows the full capacity and the remaining capacity to be pretty close - how come I am running out of juice?
Battery Installed: Yes
First low level warning: No
Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 7540
Remaining Capacity (mAh): 7536
Amperage (mA): 0
Voltage (mV): 12296
Cycle Count: 408
Thanks for any advice for a battery know nothing..

What you're seeing is a lithium battery about to die. It's not unusual for the battery to work for awhile and then just suddenly lose power - so your battery gauge may be working correctly, it just can't predict when the battery will suddenly drop off
Apple says a properly maintained battery should retain 80% of it's capacity after 300 charge/discharge cycles. If you haven't read it already, Apple's article on battery maintenance is at http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html

I was working on a photo calendar on my macbook off the battery and the battery suddenly ran out. So it wasn't shut down properly. Now when I open i photo the coloured wheel just keeps spinning and I can't get into it. Everything else on the computer seems to work. I've done forced quit and restarted it a few times and also left it running.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Hot battery and short battery life after download of Mountain Lion.

Hot battery and short battery life after download of Mountain Lion.  Any suggestions?

    As in, shortly after install?
Note after you install Mountain Lion it's likely that the Spotlight index will be rebuilt.  This will take some time and the machine will run hot.  After this completes, which could take 1-2 hours, things should return more to normal.
If they don't, I suggest running Activity Monitor and seeing if you can trace what is eating up CPU cycles.

  • Equium L10: Issue with main battery and RTC battery

    Hi
I have the Toshiba Equium L10 and it is around 14 months old and I am having problems with the battery pack and how long it lasts after a full charge. I am also having problems with the RTC battery and an ERROR 0271: Check date and time settings message when I turn on the notebook.
With regard to the battery pack, I can fully charge it up in around 3 hours but when I start to use it, it only seems to last around one and a half hours or so and it then needs to be charged again. I may have it on for around 40 minutes or so and then turn it off and come back to it later or in a day(s) or so. How long should I expect from a fully charged battery?
Regarding the RTC batttery, this is really becoming a pain and I have only started getting the ERROR 0271 message at boot time, over the last few weeks or so. I can fully charge the battery pack up and then leave it for a couple of days, but when I turn it on, I get the ERROR 0271 message about the date and time settings being incorrect. Surely after a full charge, the RTC battery should last longer than a couple of days?
The user manual states that if the RTC battery is exhausted or getting low, you should charge the RTC battery for 24 hours, but in another part of the manual it states between 24 and 48 hours, but how can you charge it for that long when the sections regarding the charging of the battery pack state that after charging the battery pack you should disconnect the AC adaptor because leaving it connected will shorten the life of the battery pack. So how can we charge the RTC battery for 24 to 48 hours if we are not supposed to leave the AC adaptor connected after the battery pack is charged - which is around three hours. Any suggestions regarding these problems, would be appreciated.
By the way we all know it's easy to change the RTC/CMOS battery in your desktop base unit, but how easy is it to change it in a Toshiba L10 Equium?
    Regards
    Brave0

    Hi Brave0,
The normal recommendation for the CMOS (RTC) battery is to leave the notebook connected to the AC adapter for at leat 12 hours once the main battery is fully charged. The charging circuitry will divert the charge current to the RTC battery automatically and no current will be passed to your main battery.
The recommendation for not leaving the AC adapter plugged in when the main battery is fully charged is really only applicable to older notebooks which did not use Li-Ion batteries and consequently they had to be fully discharged before recharging so as to avoid any 'memory' effects in the battery.
With modern Li-Ion batteries it is quite safe to leave the battery in place when fully charged and still power the notebook from the AC adapter. The charging circuitry will not pass any charge to the battery if it is fully charged.
    regards,

  • Laptop is not powering on wihout battery and with battery

    Hi All,
I have Presario CQ 40-327 TU Laptop and i've been using this since 2009. My lap's batterry is almost dead and not charging up.When i try to poer on my lap it was not powering up. So i removed the battery and plugged in the power cable and tried again but it didn't. What is the reason behind this? Though the battry is removed, it should power on with the charger cable but the same is not happening in my case?Help me out

Thanks for the reply and suggestion.
Finally i have told to replace the battery and adaptor. I've asked them to send me quotation. The quotation as follows.
    1 BATTERY (10.8 V = 47Wh)- CQ 40 NOTEBOOK - Make ORG OEM - 1YEAR WARRANTY 1   INR 4000.00
    2 ADAPTER Smart pin- CQ 40 NOTEBOOK - Make- HP - 1YEAR WARRANTY 1   INR 2300.00
    3 RAM 4 GB DDR 2- CQ 40 NOTEBOOK - Make – Hynix - 1 YEAR WARRANTY   INR  5900.00
    * Rates ara in INR (Rupees)
I feel cost is very high!! What will be the cost normally? Why the costs are so high? 4 GB RAM is 5900 Rupees(\INR)??
Shall i go ahead with this or not?? I guess the cost is $71,$31 and $105 respectively.
    Please help me out!

  • Hot Battery and then battery drains quickly

Recently my new S5 battery got really warm and then my battery life diminished exponentially.  I asked another S5 owner and the same happened to him the week of July 4th, same as mine.  Does anyone know if a push caused this issue or maybe just bad phones?

I'm sorry you're having this issue with your new S5 Stglyd2012! This isn't something that's been reported a lot with your phone. How long have you had your phone? Are you using original charger? Do you know if you've recently downloaded any new applications? It could be an application not compatible with the phone. Did it only happen once, or continually? Please elaborate so we can better assist you.

  • IPhone 3GS battery not showing low battery and then taking hours to charge

Okay so my battery today was showing that it had full power and gave me no indication that the battery was near dead (ie: saying I only had 20% power left), and then it suddenly died on me. I went and charged it in my car and it charged for over 5 hours and was only at about 90%. It's never done this before, it typically takes at most an hour to charge even from a completely dead battery, and the battery indicator has always showed what the actual power is at. The phone is still pretty new, I bought it in March or April. Any ideas what's causing this, or what I should do? Right now, it's showing me the battery has full life, but I have a battery check app that says it's only at 95%.

It is the nature of the beast. Mine does that too. The charger actually cycles off periodically if the phone is basically idle. If I want make sure I have the maximum possible charge in the phone, I disconnect the charger for several minutes (perhaps using it a bit) and then plug the charger back in. This tops off the battery. I have been able to go as long as three hours with the phone still indicating 100% using this technique. I have no way of knowing for sure, but I am confident this is perfectly normal.
Honestly, I think it is a side effect of being able to turn on the percent view battery indicator. My wife's 3G (non S) does the same thing, but you can't tell because you can't see the percent view. You don't know what you can't see.

  • Why does my iPad Mini Retina Display battery drain so quickly? I will be playing some 3d games and it says the battery is 90% but I'll turn off and turn  in back on it about 30 minutes and the battery is only 70%. Why is the reading so inaccurate?

I will be playing some 3d games and it says the battery is 90% but I'll turn off and turn  in back on it about 30 minutes and the battery is only 70%. Why is the reading so inaccurate? I understand that 3d games on high brightness will drain my battery quickly, but why doesn't it tell be how low it is to begin with? The other night it said it was around 35% and I turned it on in the morning and it was only 3%?

Sorry there are some typos above, but you should be able to figure out what I'm asking. Let me know if you have tha same problem, know how to fix it, or know if apple is aware of the problem and is adressing it in a future update.

Ok Fellas, let me give you a clue:  Games, particularly those that make heavy use of graphics and sound are notoriously power hungry.  In fact, when I was in the Navy many years ago, the folks working on the NTDS (Navy Tactical Data System)  computers used a version of Space Invaders to load test the AN/UYK-43 computers.
I have also noticed that all of my laptops (I have a brand new Toshiba dual core, an older Toshiba single core, plus 2 Dell dual core machines) have significantly shorter battery life when I play Company of Heroes than when I am just reading e-mail or surfing the 'Net.  I have also noticed the same behavior when I play games on my 4th gen Touch and my iPhone 4.
The fact is, iOS 5 did make some major improvements as well as adding some nice functionality like iMessage, wireless synch, and such, but the down side is that depending on how you use the device battery life can be shorter that what you may have experienced with pervious versions of iOS.  Its just the nature of the beast...

My computer is 3 1/2 months old and my battery is dying really fast what can I do to increase the battery life?

    Hi,
    I asssume it's a laptop!
1st I would run it right down & then do a full recharge, then run it down again + a full recharge..
Check that you do not have any apps running in the background, reset PRAM..
When all's done I usually run a movie & time how long the battery lasts..if after that & no joy call Apple Help..

  • New battery run dead and now won't charge at all. Put in old battery and system runs fine just that battery is no good.

Old battery in MBP is testing bad so I purchased a new one. When I cycle the battery as soon as it totally drains down it will now not take a charge or even boot my computer with the cord plugged in. I have tried many many dif things to get it to run, so far nothing has worked. I put in the old battery and it boots right up.
