Old behavior seen in 10.6.7

Hi,
1) Back in 2008  I posted a thread about how when I updated a Text Edit file on my desktop, it would make a certain folder unrelated to it, jump or move. I am now seeing that behavior with 10.6.7! Here is the thread for my issue back then:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/7029701#7029701
Maybe it's a bug with Text Edit, maybe it is due to some app or hack I have*. Who knows. It doesn't bother me too much but I was amused that it reappeared. Hmm, or maybe it is because I added Rosetta so I could run some old PPC apps from my G4?
* I can list them if you like.
The Destop is fairly open, has 21 items on it = 3.99gb. HD is 500gb, 167gb  used, 331gb free.
2) Another thing that I might as well throw in in this thread: How do I get all folders to obey what I have set as the default view: List view at 16 pt type? I clicked on the HD icon (I put it on  desktop. I'm old school. I like seeing an icon for it...) Set the view in the Finder and made it my default. New windows seem to be obeying this and are opening correctly. Nested older windows though are still coming up as the system default when I got this computer a week ago, at 12 pt type. I can change every one I see but I would think if I told the OS to open windows at 16 pt, then it would. I have set a few windows to icon view but otherwise ALL windows are or should be viewed as List and in 16 pt type. Experience has shown that the OS is not always capable of remembering these things...
That's all for now.
Thanks for any help.
Cheers,
John L
(who's been using Macs since 1997 or so. OS 7.5)

For general speeds issues here's what you want to try:
PRAM/NVRAM Reset: Turn on the computer holding CMD-Option-P-R (Command-Option-P-R) and keep holding until you get a second start up chime (more are perfectly alright)
Clear the caches: Go to each users home folder by opening up finder. Go into the Library folder and find a folder called Caches. Drag that into the trash. Do it for all users, restart and empty trash (files are still active so you can't delete until restart)
Then you want to go into Safari on each User and click on the word Safari in the top right hand corner. Go down to Reset Safari and have everything checked but: Reset topsites, clear history, remove other autofill form text, remove passwords
Shut down your computer, on boot it may be a bit slower because of all the resets it's auto regenerating a bunch of files, but over all your system should be faster
Specifically for you two, the caches folder removal is the most important

  • Any way to get the old behavior of "Hyperdraw Other"

In Logic 4.7 one could type ^Command-O to bring up a dialog, then simply type in a controller number and RETURN. That's all you needed to do to hyperdraw any arbitrary controller.
In Logic 7 you type ^Command-O which brings up a long list. No text entry box. You are then forced to use your mouse to scroll waaaay down the list to the controller you want. To add insult to injury you are then forced to use the mouse again to click on the close box to close the window. Yes, this is one of those nifty new-fangled windows without a "CLOSE WINDOW" key command.
Is there any way to replicate the old behavior of Hyperdraw >Other?
I don't want to rant but it seems to me that the speedy interface of logic 4.7 has given way to uber-bloat in logic 7. I hope this isn't the general direction things are going.

    Hi K,
    ⌘ W
Yes, it does close the floating window on my system.
Coming fresh off the transition from 4.7 the distinction is vivid. You may not remember
Probably not, since I made every upgrade along the way, though skipped a lot of V5's primetime.
In my opinion once you start adding up a bunch of "nowhere near as terrible"s and your forced to do them again and again day after day they add up to one big terrible.
Agreed - but some adaption is of course to be expected (at least, IMO). Some is for the better, some is for the worse. Overall, I find the workflow faster with 7 than 4 but again, my memory is not as vivid as yours.
    Cheers,
    J

  • Revert to old behavior of "save as" window

I recently installed the CS5 trial and after unsuccessfully trying to save my images, I found this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2778936
I have the exact same problem: my "save as" window does not display due to the 1024x600 resolution of my netbook. I realize that Adobe clearly states that 1024x768 is the minimum recommended resolution for running Photoshop. However, netbooks are perfect for doing some quick editing while on the road, and this new behavior makes this impossible. With the previous version of Photoshop, the "save as" window was still displayed, and despite the fact that it did not fully fit within the screen, it was still possible to save my images.
My humble request, therefore, is that you please consider reverting to the old behavior of the "save as" dialogue. I'm sure I would not be the only one who would be grateful for that.

Have you found a solution to this? I have a similar issue in finder:
For some reason there are two "Desktop"s in the lower portion of the sidebar in finder. If I drag them out, they poof. Then I open finder preferences, and click on sidebar preferences, Desktop is unchecked. If I click on the checkbox, one desktop appears in the sidebar, but the box remains unchecked. If I click the checkbox again, another desktop appears and the box becomes checked.
I have also noticed that open/save dialogs have two desktops.
I've cleaned caches and deleted the com.apple.finder.preferences.
Any ideas how to solve this annoyance?

  • After upgrading from Mac 10.6 to 10.9, firefox creates new windows by an "expanding" animation instead of just appearing. How do I get the old behavior back?

On Mac 10.6.8, when I create a new window by hitting command-N or going to the file menu, or if another page creates a new window, the new window just appears instantaneously. However, after upgrading to Mac 10.9.2, new windows appear by an "expanding" animation, which takes slightly longer than the old "appearing" behavior. (Other apps on my Mac do not exhibit the "expanding" behavior, only firefox.)
Was this behavior intentional? How can I get the old behavior back?
    I am using Firefox 28.0.

    Hi __trout__,
Go to the mac system preferences and click on Doc. There is a Minimize window using.... select the animation there.
    Hope this helps.

  • Login problems...  strange behavior seen

Hello. I'm seeing a strange behavior with regard to invalid database
logins and JDO. I have a few test cases. First I try to pass an invalid
username to JDO. This test case fails and throws a
FatalInternalException, which is what I expect. Then, I pass a valid
username and I am able to connect and retrieve an entry from the database.
Next, if I run the same invalid username test case again, it throws a
DataStoreException. I am wondering if the username and password from the
valid test case is getting saved somehow and is being used by the second
run of the invalid username test case. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Can you post the exceptions that you're seeing?
-PatrickPatrick, below are the two exceptions that I'm getting. The first one is
the one that I receive the first time that I run the test case. The
second one is the exception that I receive when I run the same test case
again after a test case that has valid login information. The strange
thing is that I would expect the top-level exception for both of them to
be the same. Thanks for the help...

  • Nexus 1000V and strange ping behavior

    Hi ,
I am using a Nexus 1000v a FI 6248 with a Nexus 5K in redundant architecture and I have a strange bevahior with VMs.
I am using  port-profiles without any problems but in one case I have this issue
I have 2 VMs assigned to the same port profile
When the 2 Vms are on the same esx I can ping (from a VM)  the gateway and the other VM, now when I move one of the VM to an other ESX (same chassis or not).
From both , I can ping the gateway, a remote IP but VMs are unreachable between them.
and a remote PC are able to ping both Vms.
I checked the mac table, from N5k it's Ok , from FI 6348 it's Ok , but from N1K I am unable to see the mac address of both VMs.
Why I tried ( I performed at each step a clear mac table)
Assign to an other vmnic , it works.
On UCS I moved it to an other vmnic , it works
On UCS I Changed the QOS policy , it works.
I reassigned it , and I had the old behavior
I checked all trunk links it's ok
So i didn't understand why I have this strange behavior and how I can troubleshoot it deeper?
I would like if possible to avoid to do that but the next step will be to create a new vmnic card and assign the same policy and after to suppress the vnmic and to recreate the old one.
    Regards

From what you mentioned here's my thoughts.
When the two VMs are on the same host, they can reach each other.  This is because they're locally switching in the VEM so this doesn't tell us much other than the VEM is working as expected.
When you move one of the VMs to a different UCS ESX host, the path changes.    Let's assume you've moved one VM to a different host, within the UCS system.
    UCS-Blade1(Host-A) - VM1
    UCS-Blade2(Host-B) - VM2
There are two paths option from VM1 -> VM2
    VM1 -> Blade1 Uplink -> Fabric Interconnect A -> Blade 2 Uplink -> VM2
    or
    VM1-> Blade1 Uplink -> Fabric Interconnect A -> Upstream Switch -> Fabric Interconnect B -> Blade 2 Uplink -> VM2
For the two options I've seen many instances were the FIRST option works fine, but the second doesn't.  Why?  Well as you can see option 1 has a path from Host A to FI-A and back down to Host B.  In this path there's no northbound switching outside of UCS.  This would require both VMs to be be pinned to the Hosts Uplink going to the same Fabric Interconnect.
In the second option if the path involves going from Host-A up to FI-A, then northbound to the upstream switch, then back down eventually to FI-B  and then Host-B. When this path is taken, if the two VMs can't reach each other then you have some problem with your upstream switches.  If both VMs reside in the same subnet, it's a Layer2 problem.  If they're in different subnets, then it's a Layer 2 or 3 problem somewhere north of UCS.
So knowing this - why did manual pinning on the N1K fix your problem?  What pinning does is forces a VM to a particular uplink.  What likely happened in your case is you pinned both VMs to Host Uplinks that both go to the same UCS Fabric Interconnect (avoiding having to be switched northbound).  Your original problem still exists, so you're not clear out of the woods yet.
Ask yourself is - Why are just these two VMs affected.   Are they possibly the only VMs using a particular VLAN or subnet?
An easy test to verify the pinning to to use the command below.  "x" is the module # for the host the VMs are running on.
module vem x execute vemcmd show port-old
I explain the command further in another post here -> https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3717261#3717261.  In your case you'll be looking for the VM1 and VM2 LTL's and finding out which SubGroup ID they use, then which SG_ID belongs to whch VMNIC.
I bet your find the manual pinning "that works" takes the path from each host to the same FI. If this is the case, look northbound for your L2 problem.
    Regards,
    Robert

  • Is there a way to bring back the old Expose?

the main reason I loved expose was that you can move files between files with expose open.
I'm an art director so I'm constantly dragging images from one photoshop file to another, or from one window into a photoshop file, and expose made this really easy to do. I could click on a layer or file, initiate expose and drag said file or layer to a new window or document.
Now mission control is straight up pointless, other than just showing what windows are open it serves no purpose. I can't drag files between windows or open photoshop documents anymore, you can't click on a file and start to drag then double tap on your mouse to launch it.
It really is a BIG flaw in lion. Everything else is great but why would Apple remove such a powerful tool entirely?
Why no leave the option in to turn it back on like the old school scrolling (which is better as well)
    Come on Apple!

Currently, the only way to get the old behavior of spaces back is to reinstall snow leopard. I am personally unaware of third party solutions, but that doesn't mean there aren't any.

  • White lines on day old 6500 slide!

Hello, wondering if anyone can give me some advice on my nokia.
This is the second one iv had now in a week and its doing exactly the same. third one in total iv seen do this.
When going through the menu or writing a text, a thin white horizontal line will appear across the screen. it does move up or down and it only lasts about a second. very annoying!
I have also noticed aswell, that when im writing a text and have made a mistake, i could be pressing the cancel button for ages and nothing happens. leave it for a second or 2, press it and it works.... i wouldnt mind if it had been dropped or was years old but seen as its a day old then im worried.
like i said this is the third one iv seen do this.
    Help anyone??
    Thank you, Vicky x

    Hi,
I have just got a 6500 slide and have noticed the same horizontal white line that flashes up when scrolling etc. I thought my phone might have a loose connector, but from your post it seems like they all exhibit this bug.
I would be curious to know if anyone with this phone doesn't see the white line. As it is I think I will just return it and try a different phone.
    Thanks,
    Paul

  • KB2993651 and KB2982791 alter the behavior of SaveDC and RestoreDC

I posted this problem on answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware
They directed me to this place to post this problem.
After applying KB2993651 or KB2982791 the behavior SaveDC and RestoreDC has changed.
Before these updates they had the  following behavior with respect to a path that was selected into a DC.
    - Select a path into DC.
    - SaveDC
    - Paint the path
    - Restore DC.
Now the path is present in the DC and can be painted again, or the number of point fo the path can be retrieved.
After these updates they had the following behavior with respect
to a path that was selected into a DC.
    - Select a path into DC.
    - SaveDC
    - Paint the path
    - Restore DC.
Now the path isn't present in the DC and can't be painted again.
also retrieving the numbers of points of the path fails.
With update KB2982791 we got a BSOD after calling
    pDC->GetPath(NULL,NULL,0);
We didn't test this with update KB2993651 .
Due to this changes our customers who applied these update have problems with printing.
We use the SaveDC and RestoreDC to repeatedly  to use the same path without to the need of creating it with ::BeginPath ::Endpath everytime.
This code was in use for more than 15 years, and now it is broken.
This problem should be solved by microsoft, because the old behavior is the correct one.
SaveDC and ResoreDC should also restores in the DC selected object (such as path).

    Hi, Genmini,
According to the KB below, Microsoft already confirmed the issue after these two updates installed.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2993651
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2982791
You can try to uninstall these two updates firstly for test. Also you can try to use system restore to revert your system to a former normal time point if possible.
In addition, please also check Windows updates, these problem should be fixed soon.

  • Strange behavior in TextEdit

When I had a TextEdit document open, I realized that the file was in the wrong location (you can see the path by command clicking in the title bar), so I dragged the little proxy icon in the title bar to the correct folder in the Finder. Well the Finder created an ALIAS of the file in the new location, it didn't actually move it!
This is a change from the old behavior. I tested the same behavior in a non-Apple application, and it worked as it used to, actually MOVING the file.
Is Apple trying to confuse us? Is this the new way this feature is going to work in all new Apple programs?
I liked the old behavior better.

Please specify what kind of error you are getting and what is command you are firing on Unix.

  • Tab focus behavior when searching selected text

In the previous versions of Firefox, when I selected some text on a webpage, right-clicked the text to get the context menu, and clicked the "Search" option (e.g. Search Google for "my text selection") the currently focused tab would stay focused and a new tab would be launched to handle the appropriate search in the background. Ever since I updated to Firefox 13, the new tab now receives focus when I do a search on selected text.
How can I switch back to the old behavior? This change in functionality is driving me crazy. When reading a webpage, I often like to select words and phrases about which I want to learn more and launch searches to Google and/or Wikipedia via the context menu. I almost always like to finish reading the current page before going off to read the new tabs. Even if I did intend to stop reading the current page and go to the new tab, it often takes many seconds for the new tab to load and I would rather keep reading the current page and switch to the new tab manually than stare at a blank tab while I wait for it to load.
In the "Tabs" tab of the options window, there is a checkbox for "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately." Is there anything like this for new tabs launched by a context menu search?
    Thanks!

hey bob, you can enter '''about:config''' into the location bar of firefox, confirm the info notification (in case it shows up), search for the preference named '''browser.search.context.loadInBackground''' & toggle it to true by double-clicking it. that should bring back the old behaviour...

  • GTK File Select Dialog Behavior

Recently, I noticed that the file open dialog (and the save dialog) seemed to have an unusual behavior.
In previous versions, if you clicked on the file pane, and started typing, you could select directories in the file pane. If you hit enter while a folder was highlighted, then you entered that folder, and focus remained on the file select pane.
In the current version, after hitting enter over a directory, you are shown the contents of the directory, but the cursor focus switches to the file name text entry field instead of remaining in the window pane (typing changes the filename instead of allowing you to continue navigating directories).
Is this a new GTK behavior, a bug, or something not related to GTK all together? If it's a new behavior, is there a way to get the old behavior back - this seems to make navigating the folder hierarchy much more cumbersome.
Thanks for any help in this matter.

  • Safari's zooming behavior

Safari's zooming behavior changed between Snow Leopard and Mtn Lion. Whereas zooming used to leave the width fixed, reflowing the text, it now seems to scale the width and text together, causing text to scroll out of view. How do I get the old behavior on Mtn Lion?

Might be a third party plugin or extension ...
    Troubleshoot Safari plugins and extensions:
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab.
Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
If it's not a plug-in issue, select the Extensions tab. If there are any extensions installed, turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.  If that made a difference, uninstall one at a time, quit and relaunch Safari until you find the culprit.
And check Safari > Preferences > Advanced. Accessibility eanbled ??

  • Mavericks Finder Behavior

I want the new Mavericks finder to behave in the following way:
    • I create a new window (command + N) and move it to the top of my viewport and resize it to be the full width of my viewport and one third the height
    • i leave it there
    • when i press Command + N again the new window should appear with the EXACT WIDTH AND HEIGHT OF THE LAST CREATED WINDOW and on top of the last one but slightly offset
Currently when i do this in Mavericks all i get is a randomly sized window placed in the center of my viewport and NOT AT ALL THE SAME WIDTH AND HEIGHT AS THE LAST WINDOW CREATED.
Is this possible in the new Mavericks OS?
Please say yes, as this is a way of working that is necessary for what i do.
I work with lots of files at once and am constantly dragging and dropping and referencing multiple directories at once to compare and copy items.
If I have to reszie my window each time to fit my needs this will be a chore.
I can see changing a behavior for some new tactics, but you shouldnt just do away with old behavior until you know for sure your customers are NOT using it.
I hope there is a solution to this or a patch on the way or perhaps I am overlooking something.
    Thanks

You can see by all the threads that they do. As Mavericks has only been out for a couple of weeks, perhaps none of the users here can help you with an answer to that as yet. You can contact Apple themselves on their Customer Support number in your country and ask them. We are all just users here, like yourself.

  • Bookmark behavior changed in 11.0?

My bookmarks used to open in a new tab automatically (just click on it). After the latest update to 11.0, when I click on a bookmark, it replaces the page I am viewing. How can I get the old behavior back? I cannot find any setting in either "options" or "tab mix plus" addon to fix this. I do not want to have to resort to the right-click context menu option. Thanks!

Firefox default behavior is to open a Bookmark or Link in the currently selected tab. On a Bookmark or Link, CTRL+left-click '''''<u>or</u>''''' ''right-click > "Open in New Tab"''' '''''<u>or</u>''''' middle-click (press the mouse scroll wheel) should open the Bookmark or Link in a new tab.
In the options panel for Tab Mix Plus, look at ''Events > Tab Opening'' options.
