Old Blue & White Studio Display

Hope this is the right forum for this one.
I have one of the Blue and White Studio LCD displays (Model 4551) which goes with my trusty B&W G3. I am about to get the backlights replaced as they are a little tired now and I was thinking that it might be possible to replace the actual LCD panel with a more modern one that has better contrast and viewing angles than the old one. Just wondered if any one has tried this or indeed found a suitable replacement panel at all.
Not cost effective I know but I would like any info anyway.

  • Add old 18-inch Studio Display to 2013 iMac; How ??

I need more screen real estate. My current computer is a 27-inch iMac, bought in May, 2013. When I bought the iMac the folks at the Apple store across town told me I needed an adapter to run a 2nd monitor and they sold me a “Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter”. The DVI end of this has a 24-pin female connector with one horizontal bar.
My new machine replaced a dual G4 Mac tower, from 2002, that used an 18-inch Studio Display monitor. Problem is, this monitor has a 30-pin male connector with one horizontal bar that simply won't fit my adapter.
The guy at my near-by Microcenter store told me that they have no adapters to handle the transition between my old Studio Display and my new computer. But he said he thought Apple had something for $190 that would handle the transition. Hmmmmm. I can get a new monitor for less than that!
I've spent a couple hours rummaging around in the FAQs and don't find anything that helps me.
Anybody have any suggestions about how to attach my old Studio Display to my newish iMac?

    Is it one of these:

  • Blue & White LCD display

Hey everyone, I was going through my old apple items and found an about 14" LCD display, with the outside plastic the same blue and white as the popular G3. It is mounted on a spring loaded base which is height adjustable and can pivot up/down/left/right. There is also the option to remove the fancy base and use a kick stand to hold it up. It has buttons under the front edge, and even the option for RCA input!
I was hoping someone could help me find more info on this, and maybe even how much it maybe worth. Thanks!

Hi an, I have one, are you sure it's not a 15"?

  • How to get old apple CRT studio display to stock settings?

The adjustments of my screen have been messed with and I keep trying to mess with it, but I can't seem to get it right. Is there a way to put the screen adjustment settings back to stock?

You shouldn't need any software. Any software that came with the display would have been for OS 9, anyway. They stopped selling the display before OSX came out, but OSX should be able to use it with its built-in drivers. Do you hear the startup sound from the display's power supply? Can you see the glow of the CRT filament?

  • 15" Apple Studio Display problems

I have an old 15" Apple Studio Display (Blueberry) that I'm using with my MacPro. Every once and awhile it will flicker. It acts like it turns off and then on. The screen never goes black. I can still see whatever is on the screen. In fact, it gets larger for a split second.
The connection is good. No loose cables.
I am sharing the monitor with the Blue and White G3 using a Belkin Flip.
    Any ideas?

Do you hear a zapping sound when it happens? It could be high voltage arcing. Blowing out dust might help.

  • Dual ADC Apple Studio Displays (clear acrylic) with Mac Mini

I currently have the old school Apple Studio Display ADC monitor hooked up to my Mac Mini using the ADC to DVI adapter. I have a second Studio ADC Display and another ADC to DVI adapter to run Dual Displays. I just bought a SEE 2 XTREME DVI to USB which is used for adding multiple monitors. I have it all hooked up. Its just basic plug and play after installing the Mac driver. My second monitor power light just flashes and wont turn on...Any suggestions? I already made sure both monitors and both ADC to DVI adapters worked, and they do. Please Help!! Any info would be greatly appreciated.

yea, I checked that out about the light flashes. I have tried both monitors seperately and they both work fine...just not with this DVI to USB dual monitor adapter. Also, when I had them hooked up individually, I made sure the resolution was set the same in the system preferences > displays.

  • Macbook to studio display, which lead?

what lead do i need to run my old apple 17" studio display from my macbook? mini-dvi vga female to male blah blah blah....spell it out for an idiot!
    thanks in advance.

The 17" Apple Studio Display probably has an "ADC" connector on it. So, you will need two adapters to connect your MacBook to this kind of display.

    2. Apple DVI to ADC Display Adapter

  • How much better are ACDs than older Studio Display LCDs?

I have a pretty old 17" Apple Studio Display LCD. I'm thinking of upgrading to a new ACD 20" or 23". Aside from the increase in size, is there a significant difference in the quality of the ACDs vs. the older Studio Displays like the one I have?

    Badlydrawnboy wrote:
Wow. So you're saying the quality of my 17" Studio Display is actually equal to or higher than the quality of the newer ACDs? If that's true, I guess the only reason to get a new display would be for the larger viewing area.
Elsewhere in another forum someone suggested that the ACDs were higher quality, but he didn't give any details.
No, I think BSteely is only specifically talking about 17" screens. Not all screens. The 17" monitors have not improved much since when you bought your older screen, because 17" monitors are now seen as a low end point in the market. Generally, people only buy a 17" screen if they have very little money to spend, or if they just need a very basic monitor for an office, etc. So even modern 17" monitors aren't especially good. The same goes for many other sizes too, because companies seem to be focusing on mass producing cheaper monitors with cheaper components, but there are exeptions. With modern screens, there are always SOME screens that are high quality. Most of the DELL screens, and the Apple Cinema Display's for example, use the best panels available today. They aren't perfect, but monitors that use the best panels on the market (IPS/S-IPS/AS-IPS), have good colours, good brightness and contrast, fairly decent speed, and are generally pretty good. But you have to specifically look out for screens like that, because mostly, modern monitors are using cheap TN panels which aren't that good.

  • Compatible video card from blue/white G3

Was on phone the with Apple Server Support and was told that if I had an old blue & white G3 tower laying around that the video card would work in my Xserve G5. Can anyone confirm this?
    I found a G3 with a ATI XCLAIMVRPRO (model- ATI GT-C), Revision 5C, 8MB.
What do you think? There are just times when I would like to see things through the attached monitor (like when it darn thing wouldn't boot up all the way. It would've helped to be able to see the startup process and where it got hung.)
    Suggestions anyone?
    Thanks

Can't hurt to try. I'd think it should work as it's a PCI video card.
In general, I'd agree. However, simply FYI, there is one PCI video card that causes an Xserve G5 to crash when booting from the Universal Binary 10.4.7 installer DVD (no problem on earlier versions of the installer DVD, no problem once installation is done). It's the VillageTronic MPDD Pro (also sold as the Sonnet Sonata SD). The card is EOL, so doubt it will ever be fixed unless Apple fixes the issue with the Universal Binary installer DVD in a subsequent version.

  • 17in CRT Studio Display (Blue & White)-blinking power button

I have an Apple 17in Studio Display (CRT-Blue and White vintage) connected to my Power Mac G5.
Last night, I went home, and turned it on..or rather tried to turn it on but found it stayed black, with the power button blinking green->amber->green->amber etc.
As far as the computer was concerned, the monitor was still there and working (dual monitors...the mac kept the b&w as if it was turned on).
I swapped the monitors to the different video ports and the other monitor worked fine, so it's not the video card or vga->digital adapters.
I unplugged the monitor and replugged it, and it stayed with the blinking light.
Restarting the computer with the monitor attached had the computer still running as if the monitor was working just fine, so it seems to be getting what ever kind of feedback the mac gets to let it know a video card is there.
Anyone have any idea what could be up?

  • Studio Monitor (Graphite/Clear) to Macintosh G3 (blue/white) connection

I have a Apple 17inch Studio Monitor (Graphite/Clear) that I'm connecting to a Macintosh G3 (blue/white) what kind of adapter do I need? The monitor cable has a male end with 3 rows by 10 pins plus a flat pin on the side. The G3 port is a 3 row by 5 pin female socket.

Welcome to the Apple Forums, recently revised just for your visit!
Does your Studio Display have its own AC power cord? If not, what it really needs is a display card from a G4 or an alternate power supply. I think Dr. Boot sells one, but it runs about US$100.
There is a lot of word-salad surrounding the various interfaces, and what can work with what. I suggest this article, which may help make more sense of it:

The Blue & White G3 is like the G4 PCI graphics.

  • Can I connect my old Studio Display to my MacPro Tower as a second monitor?

I'd like to hook my old Apple Studio Display (Clear body) to my MacPro tower and use it for my Pallets in PShop. Can anyone tell me the cable(s) I need to convert the studio display to the MacPro monitor port?
    Any idea on pricing?

Nevermind. I figured it out. I need the $100.00 adapter.

  • New Mac Pro Won't Work With Old Studio Display

    Hi,
Just got a new Mac Pro Desktop 8-core only to find out my old Apple Studio Display 17" won't work without a $100 adapter. We're thinking of just buying a new monitor instead. My question is will other brands now work direclty with the new Macs - or would they also need adapters? Is a DVI port the same as a DVI-D port?
    Thanks for any info...

Thanks so much for the response, Malcolm, I really appreciate it! My old monitor is an LCD, but what we decided to do is since the adapter we found (and HAD to get from Apple directly) was going to cost $99!! We went and bought a brand new Dell monitor instead for $238 - it's fully compatible with the new Mac, and it's 23" (my old one was a 17") - so all's good!
    Thanks again,
    Jacki

  • My 11 year old Apple studio display died. what is best connection with new monitor

The lCD light finally quit after 12 years. So I bought a very cheap acer /led widescreenS200HQL 19 inch as a cheap quick replacement for my monitor on my  quicksilver G4 933. Question is it is connected to the second display port VGA... Is it worth buying a connector so it can be connected to the larger DVI port(where the apple studio display was connected?) will that make any difference??? Things seem fine but was curious as to the difference???

Many of the Studio displays were ADC. Are you sure that other port is really DVI and not ADC?
My 2004 MDD vid card has one DVI and one ADC connector. I have it connected to a Viewsonic display from about 2007 with both VGA and DVI ports. When I connect the DVI port directly to the DVI port on the G4, the native res looks good but it too small to read (old, tired eyes). If I change the desktop res to make things a little bigger, the image looks like carp--fuzzy and possibly some distortion.
If I use the DVI-to-VGA adapter on the computer and connect it to the monitor. the image is shape and proper at any support desktop res I select.
    You mileage may vary.
