Old computer can't download new itunes

I have and old iMac and I can't download the new version of itunes and I can't get the shuffle to work on the old version. It comes up under devices and then says to restore it. When it is restored and the computer restarts it doesn't come back up on itunes. Any suggestions???

No, they don't want to force you to do anything. If you want to stay with a 4 and a half year old OS you are free to do so. Just be careful when you buy any hardware or software to read the minimum requirements and make sure they will work with your computer. If they won't then don't buy them. There are still people out there using OS 9.x.x. They don't write here asking why they can't buy and use an iPhone.
I am fed up of hearing this, for some software it is true - Apple does good by pushing forward and leaving old hardware or old software behind and helps advance technology faster by cutting loose ties with the the things holding it back.
However don't go kidding yourself that this is a technologically limiting situation, this is Apples agenda, a purely superficial limitation - no of course they have no obligation to keep the software that manages ipods working on a 4 year old system, but it will **** off alot of consumers and takes little effort to keep at least the features relevant to syncing new ipods of iTunes 10 backward compatible to a reasonable extent - OS 10.4 is not a million miles different to OS 10.5... iTunes 10 works on windows XP which is 4 years older than OS 10.4 , is a completely different OS and requires much more work to get all of the features working.
The decision of cycling out 10.4 support for new ipods is hardley a technical one.
My sister has been caught in this situation... having been bought a new £40 ipod shuffle her ppc mac which runs 10.4 cannot sync the device, Apple don't sell OS 10.5 anymore and the cheapest on amazon is £125
For someone who buys or is given a £40 device - do you really think they are going to have the latest and greatest mac? or be willing to spend 3 times the price of the device to make their computer compatible?
I suggested that my sister use another family members older pc from the 90's that uses windows XP to sync her iPod instead - all they are doing to people with older macs is forcing them away, don't assume everyone with a mac is stinking rich - one of the top 3 things most mac users say as a reason for buying mac is their longevity (from both a hardware and software point of view) - it's difficult to justify that longevity when apple want to ignore every model and OS they release that is not current.

  • TS3212 can't download new iTunes version; old version blocks it; error message "network resource is unavailable"  iTunes.msi

Can't download latest iTune version on my PC with Vista 64bit.  Old version blocks it.  Error message:  "......network resource that is unavailable"  references "iTunes.msi"  How do I remove old version?

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Got a new computer- Can I sync new iTunes with my iPod?

We recently had to purchase a new computer, and unfortunately I was not able to transfer my iTunes data from the old computer to the new one. I just downloaded iTunes onto my new computer, though of course it does not have any of the old data. My iPod has everything I need on it. We were able to transfer all our MP3's to our Music folder, so the files that are uploaded to my iPod are on the new computer. Is there any way I can transfer the information from my iPod to the iTunes?

are you using an iPod Touch or a regular iPod (e.g. Classic) ?
if the latter, maybe this KB article helps.

  • Sync error AND can't uninstall AND can't download new iTunes

So last week I tried to add some stuff to my iPod because I hadn't in a while. When I connected it to the computer and opened iTunes, I got an error message about the sync-up.
I got on the 'net to download an iTunes update (10.7 at the time, I believe) to see if that would help.  After trying five times, I gave up.  Nothing happens when I hit "Download Now." I'm confident it has nothing to do with pop-up blockers or security settings.  I double-checked them just to be sure.  And it's not like I haven't downloaded other stuff recently.
OK, so I try uninstalling iTunes to see if that helps.  Nope; can't do that either.  I get a message basically saying I'm not allowed.
I've been about four hours on this problem by now, including scouring online message boards for an explanation.  Unfortunately, it seems I'm the only one having all of these problems at once.  I'm not sure if this is just iTunes being dumb or if this is part of a larger computer problem I'm having.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks. If that's a 64-bit system, try the following user tip:

  • Not allowed to run old version, can't download new, with MacOS 10.3

I have a Powerbook running Mac OS 10.3.9. When I start Digital Editions it tells me that there is a new version and that I must upgrade or quit. However, the new version (1.5) requires Mac OS 10.4 - and I cannot download it even if I wanted. In effect, I can no longer run Digital Editions on my computer. To put it kindly: That is somewhat irritating.
Of course, it works if I shut down internet access, but that's quite awkward.
How do I continue running Digital Editions?
    /Jacob

Thank you for checking this out!
Well, the reason for not upgrading to 10.4 is simple. It costs money that I don't have to spend.
10.3.9 runs great, and every other piece of software I have allow me to run the versions I have installed. They also run great. Only Digital Editions suddenly refuses to run, for no apparently good reason.
I use Digital Editions to read (time limited) ebooks I borrow at the library. I have not been able to read these with Acrobat Reader.
On a more angry note: I think software that on purpose renders itself useless is very near a kick in the face on the user.
Why can't users have the OPTION to upgrade, like with any other civilized software? Especially when it is obvious that the new version is incompatible with the machine's operating system.
    Best regards,
    /Jacob

  • Can't download new iTunes

    Hola,
For some reason, i cannot download the latest version of iTunes onto my Computer. I have Windows XP and it keeps saying, "Could not open key: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes\QuickTimePlayerLib.QuickTimePlayerApp\CLSID. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personel."
Why does it say this? How can I fix it?

You need to Follow all stpes here, especailly "Clean up iTunes installer files on the computer" and "Download QuickTime Standalone Installer ( In other words Quicktime WITHOUT iTUnes)"http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976

    Help!

    Hello melissa62695,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
    1. Remove iTunes and related components from the Control Panel
Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order. Then, restart your computer.
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
    2. Reinstall iTunes and related components
If the issue you're troubleshooting isn't resolved after following these steps, it isn't necessary to remove and reinstall iTunes multiple times.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • Why did my ipod die AND I can't download new itunes?!?!

I got my ipod mini 2 years ago but just started using it (I know I am late).
I was using itunes version 5 (ignoring the update messages when I plugged it in) and then one day the music died...

I tried all the things on the support pages and nothing helps.
Now all I see is a apple icon... It won't recognize the ipod om itunes.
and NOW I can't install itunes 7. I get a message saying: "Service ‘ipodService’ (ipodService) could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient priviledges to stop system"
Can one of you help me PLEASE! I have been traveling and no ipod = no fun
    Thanks!!!

BUT it won't restore... any tips?
could you describe what happens when you try to restore?

Podcasts that I had subscribed to with my old computer are invisible in the iTunes store on my new computer. The error message says the podcast is not available in the US. Yet I could still download the podcast on my old computer before I switched. How can I fix this?

    Hello, ted_marx38.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
The most common cause for this issue would be media present that is purchased with another Apple ID.  When prompted to authorize the computer it may show a different Apple ID.  If this is the case, the computer will need to be authorized for this Apple ID.  The article below will walk you through the process of verifying if that is the case or correcting the issue if not.
iTunes repeatedly prompts to authorize computer to play iTunes Store purchases
