My old computer crashed and I want to know if there is an easy way (or any way) to copy music from my ipod classic to my new computer?

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.

For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc) use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
SharePod is also freeware.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

You can't sync or drag your non iTMS music back directly from an iPod to iTunes. The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

All of your media that you bought from iTunes you can restore by plugging in the iPod and then right clicking on the iPod icon in the iTunes side bar and select "Transfer Purchases from (name of your iPod)"
For songs/movies you ripped yourself:
If you are on a Mac, look up DeTune... Or Senuti...
there are other compatible things for other OSes but you will have to search for them

Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.

What actions, if any, did you take to transfer your iTunes Library from your old computer to your new one? Unless you do so, the only songs that will automatically be available to you are your previous iTunes Store purchases - and even then this is dependent on both where you are (not all regional versions of the Store provide this facility) and whether the songs you've purchased are still available from the Store.
As leofanti points out, iTunes Match is not a backup service for your library.

The music sync is one wa - copmputer to ipod. The only exception is itunes purchases.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your comptuer. Use your backup to put everything back

The iphone is not a backup/storage device. The sync is one way - computer to iphone. The exception is itunes purchases: File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
You shouldcopy everything from your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one. This one of the main reasons it has laways been very basic to always maintain a abckup copy of your computer.

Transferring music from Ipod to new computer

Hello, I have just bought a new computer and would like to know how I can transfer the playlists from my Ipod directly to the Itunes that I have just downloaded.

I tried following this document and made my Ipod a hard drive so I could copy files off it onto a flash drive memory stick, so that I could then copy them onto my new computer.
The ipod files won't go anywhere!
What else can I do??? (Since I was moving, I copied all my CDs onto it using my old computer, which is now inaccessible some 8000 miles away, as are the CDs.)
I would like to back up the CDs from the ipod on my new computer, and be able to play them from the computer, too.
How do you get them off the ipod onto my new computer???
