Old computer crashed...new computer...how to transfer ipod songs

My old computer completely crashed so it is not working at all. I have a new computer and I'm trying to transfer all my music from my ipod to my itunes. I have been trying to do this without erasing all my old music, but I have a lot of music purchased that wasn't on itunes. I just can't get it to work and I have authorized my new computer to my ipod.

If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.

Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.

Your bookmarks and history are stored in the ''places.sqlite'' file in your Firefox profile folder. While Firefox is closed, you can replace the current file with the old one. Doing so will replace your current set of bookmarks and history. You may want to backup the current file beforehand.

I had an old computer that crashed on me about a month ago. I have a 1GB iPod Shuffle. It was full of music at the time. I got my replacement computer and installed the cd on it. When I plugged my ipod shuffle into my new computer it loaded all of the songs from it onto my computer. Then I got an error message on my screen and I had to unplug the ipod it get it to stop. I did go through the proper steps before I disconnected it. Now when I plug it in all it does is error everything until I disconnect it. I also did try to restore the settings on it but it just errors. I also received an ipod nano 2gb for christmas this year. I have plugged it in to my computer just fine and downloaded all the songs off my library on to that one. I'm not too good with these ipods but my 14 year old little brother is, but he's stumped too. Any one offer any suggestions? It's only a year old? Is it already junk?

Well now I think I have bigger problems. I just tried to plug it into my computer so I could write down what the error message was and now my computer won't pick it up and the ipod won't light up now. When I tried it this morning it did. I think it's hopeless.

I presume when your hard drive crashed nothing was recoverable from it. You could try contacting the iTMS Customer Service and see if you can persuade them to allow a second download. However below is an extract from the support page which as you can see states that is you lose your music you have to buy it over again. You can email them from the "backing up your music" link on this page: iTMS Customer Service
Why do I need to back up my music library?
Be sure to make regular backups of your music files (in your iTunes Music folder) by copying them to an external hard disk or other media. Otherwise, if your hard disk becomes damaged or you lose any of the music you've purchased, you'll have to buy any purchased music again to rebuild your library.

Computer crashed new memory installed... iPod says it has to erase now

My Dell (go figure) crashed long story short I had the memory replaced in it. Now when I connect my iPod it says it's synced to another computer and i can only listen to music cant add or delete or anything. How can I get it so that the iPod and my computer recognize each other again. Also I have an external hard drive an all my music is saved to that along with the iTunes program. I would recommend starting over this time using Setup Assistant. Because you are migrating from a PPC machine I would migrate everything EXCEPT applications. You should manually install your apps, this will give you the opportunity to udate the ones that need it and I'm sure there are many. You may even apps that won't run on Intel based machines so why migrate them at all? You can use the Setup Assistant tips beginning at "Second chance...." You can either restore from your old machine or from one of it's backups. I think you'll see it's a pretty clean process, something you passed over (I'm not sure why) when you turned on the new iMac for the first time.

If your iPod is set to sync automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. You should then be able to change your settings: iTunes for Mac - Keyboard Shortcuts
Alternatively open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods" and choose Ok. Then connect your iPod.
Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

Enable disk mode on the iPod.
Drag them to the ipod and then the laptop.

I have an eMac with iTunes 7.1.1 and my daughter's 30 gb, video iPod has 1000 songs on it-- that iPod is formatted for Mac.
OK but now she is switching to a PC due to work, and moving- so she won't have access to the eMac. She'd like to format her iPod for PC, but doesn't want to lose the 1000 songs. (Many/most are already on the PC, but so are many, many more, - from her sister etc.--and she'd like to just transfer these 1000).
What I'd simply like to do is copy her 1000 songs to a folder on the eMac by putting the iPod into DISK mode, then connect the iPod to her PC and completely erase it / format it for Windows via iTunes 7.1.1 for Windows on her PC.
Then I'd like to transfer the 1000 songs in that folder to my external La Cie 60 gb "USB2" HD (which I will format for Windows first).
Then I'd like to connect that La Cie External HD to the PC and have the 1000 songs imported into my daughter's windows iTunes and then finally have her connect her iPod and have the 1000 songs copied (manually or via sync) to her now-formatted-for-Windows iPod.
CAN THAT BE DONE? If so, is there anything tricky here, i.e. do I have to use iTunes on the Mac to put the iPod into HARD DISK mode?
And will the songs once on the Mac be able to copy over to a Windows-formatted La Cie external HD?
NOTE: All 1000 songs are songs from CD's that she has put into iTunes, i.e. there are no 'Apple iTunes store' purchased songs so there will not be a problem with that.
Any comments really appreciated here-- she's only visiting for a couple of days and I'd like to do this asap-- really appreciate any guidance.

Did the hard drive fail or did Windows crash? If it is not a hard drive problem then put old drive into new computer and tranfer files to new drive.
After that leave the old drive on the machine and use it for backups.
If the old drive actually failed then there are many programs available, some free some not, for doing what you need.
