Old computer- dangerous to ipod?

well yesterday i hooked up my ipod to an old computer (Gateway EV700?) that has new applications like windows xp and all the new versions of quicktime and itunes and popped the ipod on the cable and popped it into a usb port on the front on the computer. ipod died? totally dead, wouldnt reset or anything, blank screen.
anyways, i returned the ipod and got another one. before i try hooking the new one up, is there any possibility i could damage this one too? are there any system requirements i need to know about before hooking this one up? and if so, where can i find my system's information? (its not my computer)
thanks!

hi Bret!
i meant to plug in the ipod without having the Do Not Disconnect message appear on the ipod.
while the ipod is plugged in and showing up in the itunes sourcelist, go "edit > preferences" and click on the ipod tab. do you have either "manually manage songs and playlists" or "enable disk use" selected? if so, it's normal to see that screen when you've got the ipod showing up in your sourcelist.
with the creative, u can recharge (internationally, since it goes up to 220v) thru a wall plug.
you can do that with the ipod AC adapter too. see:

  • Old computer died, need iPod music on new laptop

My old computer died before I could make files and transfer library. How do I get my music from my iPod to my new laptop? I need help!!

    Hello kris10new,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link after the Apple support document below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

  • My ipod is synced on my new computer but i want a song on my old computer but my ipod is not syncing with the old one. What do I do?

What do i do? (BTW: i own a pc)

you can use e.g. home sharing to transfer the song.

  • HT1202 If I only have an IPod and a IPad (new) is tree any way to sync the two.  My old computer which the IPod was synced with is toast.

No. You can download much or most of the content that you have already purchased as long as you use the same Apple ID. There is no way to sync the two devices.

  • I am losing a hard drive on another computer so I have downloaded all music to my ipod nano, when I sync the nano to my new computer and new itunes software it won't pick up the music from the old computer what do I do to successfully sync?

I am losing a hard drive on an old computer so I performed a sync of all music from the old computer to my ipod nano.  Now when I sync my ipod nano to my new computer/Itunes all music will not upload to new computer/software.  What am I doing wrong?

I’ve never needed to do that and am fairly new to using itunes but try doing this. Go to, “Store,” in the itunes menu and select, “Authorize this computer.” Enter apple id and see if that works. I heard that method is used to transfer purchased media to a new computer but I don’t know if it works for regular stored media. Please let me know if that works.

  • Old computer crashed & have to put music from iPod to new computer.HELP?

Our old Desktop computer crashed, finaly have a new computer, but am unsure hoe to transfer all content (music, games, movies & photos) from iPod classic to new computer.
Our last computer run on Windows XP & the new one is Vista, have already down loaded new version of iTunes to new computer, but don't want to plug in iPod, just yet. Don't want to loose all our music (over 2000 songs ) Some are from the iTunes store & some are from our CD colletion, which took ages to put on computer. I also have over 200 photos that were on old computer & is on iPod that I would like to transfer to new computer. Have also purchased movies from iPod Lounge (not iTunes) & am hoping that I will be able to transfer these as well. I have searched & have found several different ways you can do this, but am still unsure of the whole process. If anyone out there has had this issue,a bit of guidence would be appreciated. Thanks

Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library. There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to the iTunes preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'control+shift' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.

For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump and iPodRobot.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • New computer, how do i get all the music from old computer into new itunes?

subject said it all. how do i get the music from my old computer and my ipod into the new itunes account on my new computer. i'm stinkin confused.

Easiest way is to copy the entire iTunes folder onto an external hard drive and then copy it onto the new computer. Google your query. Lots of step by step instructions out there

  • How can I export photos from my iPad or iPod to my main computer or hard drive. My old computer died and I want to get my photos onto my new computer. Thanks in advance.

HOw can I export photos from my iPad or iPod to my main computer? My old computer died with my photos on it but I want to move my photo library from my iPad or iPod to the computer I just bought. Thanks for any help you can give.

Sorry but your iPhoto library is not on an iPad or iPod - you may have photos there (most likely low resolution copies) but not an iPhoto library - dying computers (along with software and human errors) are why you always must have a backup - now is the time to load it

  • My old computer crashed and I lost my old library of recorded CD's and new music.  I downloaded iTunes again and found my old account info.  How do I add a new CD without deleting all of my music on my iPod?

My old Computer crashed and I lost my old library of recorded CD's and tunes.  iTunes says I must delete everything off my iPod in order to add a new CD.  It also said I already have an account which I was able to locate.  I don't know how to get into my old account.  I think that would solve everything.  I have Windows XP.  I'd appreciate any input.

    No.
All iTunes content on your iPod Touch should be in your iTunes library on your computer, and your iTunes library on your computer should be included with your computer's backup along with all other important data - stored on an external drive or some other external media used for backup purposes only.
When music was purchased on a CD, if the CD was lost and you returned to the store where the CD was purchased with your receipt, were you given a replacement CD?
    The same applies here.

  • I would like to transfer all data from my iPod classic to my new computer with windows 8.1. My old computer's cpu died. Utilizing iTunes which only allows iTunes albums purchased at iTunes store. The cd's were loaded via iTunes originally.

  • My old computer crashed and my music is still on my Ipod but I need it to show up on Itunes and I'm not sure how?

My old computer crashed and I got a new laptop but none of my music that is still on my Ipod will show up in Itunes. I don't know how to get it to import. Whenever I select the Ipod folder through my computer to Import my data nothing shows up.
All my music is still on my Ipod but I need it to show up in Itunes and I only have 3 computers that are authorized so its not like I can deauthorize all the computers and start over.
I now have Windows 8 and I'm completely confused over this new version of Itunes.  I was having the same problem trying to figure out to import my music on Itunes from the old version with Windows 8 as well.
