Old Computer/Newer OS

I have a 1999 clamshell and have 10.3.9. Lately, I've noticed that the performance is affected. I'm thinking of switching back to Classic but want to know if this is necessary.
Main Problem:
Cannot connect to DSL
What I Want to Keep on Classic:
Wireless
Can I solve both of these problems by switching to Classic?

Hi Abi -
Switching to Classic still allows you wireless and DSL possibilities ...of course these are also available in OS X as well. If you're having a DSL problem in OS X go to: System Preferences/Network/TCP-IP and make sure DHCP is selected. The hook-up should be 'plug and play' (that is automatic) but if you're having problems with access via the ethernet (and your wireless is fine) then it may be the RJ-45 connector to blame.
As far as speed goes for your 300 ibook, I would say running in classic is faster. I know a lot of people like the fact you can install 10 and keep up-to-date with what's on the web, but the short of it is that your machine was made in 1999! You can only expect so much from something closing in on 7 years old ...esp. in the computer industry.
Having said that, more RAM and a quicker/larger drive def. help along with slimming down the size of the operating system - but even then a 300Mhz machine would still be more responsive in OS 9. My 366 ibook works great in Panther for me but I've done some work to it - yet on the occasion I have to boot into classic I do notice a difference in speed. Not much mind you, but when it comes to running native applications I find Photoshop 6 loads way faster in Classic than Photoshop CS in OS X, and Reason 2.5 in Classic out shines it's OS X equal, 3.0. Same with Appleworks and a lot of those smaller classic programs that are less than a Meg in size - they just fly
It's all matter of what you need to do though.
If you need basic text, email, chat and surfing (not to mention all those great older classic applications) then staying in classic is fine - but if you want to be able to interact with current websites, RSS feeds and watch the latest podcasts then you have to have a current system - but then having a current system that runs slower then what's needed kinda defeats that point.
Hopes this helps with your decision.

  • Time Machine: Old Computer / New Computer

I had been backing up my Mac Mini to an external drive using Time Machine for a couple of years. I just got a new iMac, connected the same drive to it, and am in the process of running a back up on it. Whne I open the external drive folder I see one file named 'Backups.backupdb' with the current date/time in the 'Date Modified' column.
I don't think I just overwrote my 2 years of back ups from the Mini (which WAS going to be my question) since there are 2 directories in that 'Backups.backupdb' directory - one with each computer name. The question becomes how to restore files from the old computer to the new. Do I have to now search for them directly on the external drive (i.e. not use Time Machine to restore)?
After 2 years of working with it Time Machine still has me a bit confused,

Use the Migration Assistant to import them.

  • Old iPhone, Old Computer, New Hard Drive

My wife's hard drive crashed in her PowerBook G4.
I want to sync her iPhone 3GS to the new hard drive in the old computer, but iTunes warns me that it is going to sync and overwrite all her apps.
I have succeeded in syncing contacts, calendar, music, etc. It's the apps that I am trying to sync.
I have established her account in iTunes and authorized the computer.
I can't seem to find a definitive answer to this online.
    Thanks!

  • 160G iPod, iTunes gone from old computer, New LapTop???

Where do I go from here. The old computer is not an option. I want to download the newest version of iTunes into my new laptop, but have a couple of concerns with the idea.
    1. Will it be too much for my laptop?
    2. If I successfully download iTunes & then hook up my iPod to it, is there the chance that what I have on my iPod could be wiped out?

You should probably post your questions in the iTunes forums:

  • Music transfer old computer new computer

how to transfer music from itunes on old computer to new lap top w/ installed itunes

On a Mac there is an application in the Utilities folder called Migration Assistant. Running this application on both Macs and connecting your old and new macs together will allow you to transfer all files you might want from the old Mac to the new one. It's pretty easy to do and the application is pretty easy to understand and follow the instructions.
Not sure hw you might do this on a PC.

  • Old Computer, New Iphone

I have a MacBook 10.4.11 and a new new Iphone (4G) from Veriozon. I plugged the phone into the computer for the first time and it said that my version of itunes was too old (9.something). I tried to download the new itunes, but apparently my computer is too old and decrepit. Is there any way for me to sync my new iphone on my computer?

If you have an Intel MacBook, just buy a Snow Leopard upgrade disc for $30 and install the OS upgrade. When that finished, download and install the iTunes update. Then connect your iPhone.
If you have a G4 or G5 processor in your Mac, then you will need a copy of Leopard (OS-X v10.5). I have heard that you can call Apple and speak directly with a specialist and still buy a copy of Leopard, but it is not available in their online store from what I have heard. Once you get your copy of Leopard, install it, then download and install the iTunes update and connect your iPhone.

  • Old computer new Ipad

I have an ibook G4 and just bought an iPad and new iPhone 4. I was unable to download itunes 10 to activate them and activated them on my friend's mac. However, now I have all my music and movies on my old ibook G4, I can't run the new itunes because it requires Mac OS 10.5 and my OS is 10.4.11. Everytime I run software update it tells me I am fully updated. Please help.

You need to install OS 10.5 if your computer will support it and you can find a copy.

After you install the base 10.5, download & install the 10.5.8 combo update at http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
Otherwise look on places like e-bay & Craigslist but expect to pay nearly new prices for used copies. Also make sure you get back, retail version discs, not gray ones which will not install on your computer.

  • Old computer new ipod

i just bought a new ipod. i have an older computer, running 10.2.8 and itunes 4.9. is my new ipod completely incompatible? is there any way i can get it to run, or do i need to return my ipod?
    thanks

The newer iPods require iTunes 7 and OS X 10.9 as a minimum, as far as I am aware you won't get away with less than this:
    System Requirements - Mac
    •USB 2.0 port
    •Mac OS X v10.3.9 or later
    •iTunes 7 or later
    • Internet connection (Broadband recommended).

  • Old computer, new phone, is an iTunes transfer possible?

I have an iTunes account and I'd like to transfer my music to an Android phone. My computer is too old to support the iTunes download from the Apple site. Is there any way to log on and transfer my playlists online?

You would have to read the directions that came with your phone to learn how to put music on it.
    Itunes syncs with Apple devices.

  • Old Computer - New iPod Touch

I'm considering the purchase of a new iPod Touch. The Apple Store website says I need a Mac with a USB 2 port. Does this have to be a factory installed port? Specifically can I connect the iPod Touch to either of these:
    1. G4 DP 800 QuickSilver Mac with USB 2.0 PCI card installed running OS X 10.4.11.
    2. G3 Pismo Laptop (Firewire ports) with PC USB 2.0 card in the slot. The Pismo is running OS X 10.4.11.
    Thanks for your help.
    Ralph

I have connected a number of ipods to a 733 Mhz Quicksilver G4 Tower with an aftermarket USB2 PCI card - no problems. The last time I tried it also worked on the native USB 1 ports as well, just very slow when syncing large amounts of data.

I found this article some time ago when I was trying to help someone else in this same situation. This is a copy and paste from the website. The website is provided below for you to read before you try this.
    Plug your phone into iTunes
Click setup as a new device
Immediately unplug your phone from the computer
Give it about 30 seconds and iTunes will give a message (I don’t remember the specific, but regarding you unplugging the device and it not completing)
    Plug your phone back in
Viola! no restore occurred and you can access everything again
This computer has previously synced with an iPhone or another iOS device.

What version of Premiere Elements is still installed activated on the old computer (what is your old operating system)?
What version of Premiere Elements are you going to install and activate on your new computer (what is your new operating system)?
Before you do anything, how many of your computers now have the same Premiere Elements purchased/activated serial number installed on them - just that one old one?

  • How do I unsync from an old computer and sync to a new one without losing data or actually syncing.

I have an iPhone 4S. I have always had it "synced" to my family Mac on my own user account, but I kept the "manage music manually" box checked, so it was never actually synced. I recently got my father's old macbook pro. I did not wipe it, but changed all the account information to my own. I plugged my phone into the computer and it would not let me click and drag songs into it. After a little bit of digging I found some settings that would allow me to fix this. However, when I tried applying these a message that said something like this appeared, " Do you want to sync with this library? Your device is previously synced to another library. Syncing with this library will delete all your data. Do you want to continue?" This isn't the exact wording but pretty close. So I tried troubleshooting that for about 3 hours. Eventually, I tried deleting my user account from my family mac entirely through the Admin account. I then tried plugging my phone in to my macbook, and the same thing happened. I have tried everything I have come across except actually backing up wiping and restoring my iPhone. I would prefer not to do this unless there is some way to get every piece of data on my macbook from my phone, as it has music from various libraries and I am not positive it will load everything. Is there any way to fix this?

I had the same problem. I solved by (I use Windows7, should be same for OSX):
    1. copying the library from the older computer to the new computer, at the usual itunes media location.
    2. on new computer's itunes preference (advance), uncheck the box "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library"
    3. open up this folder of media copied over from old computer, just drag over to itunes library, cursor will turn into plus sign.
    4. since you unchecked the box for "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library", you are in effect only growring the new computer's itunes library's database. Your media files are already under the folder on the new computer.
Now when you connect iphone to this new computer and tells you it wants to erase your iphone's library in order to sync with this one, go ahead, click yes. Why is this ok now? Because you've copied all your files over to the new computer. So when you sync again, your existing files are there on the new computer.
You should export play lists on the older computer to be imported on the new computer though.

  • HT201250 I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was?

I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? I want to make sure I will still have various important files on my new computer, like my songs in iTunes, my photos in iPhoto, etc, etc. Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. I have to install Photoshop CS4 extended on a new computer from a disk because my old computer had a hard drive crash.  There is no serial number on the back of the case.  How can I obtain a usable serial number?

    Find your serial number quickly
You can activate software without following up and registering it... at least that was the case in the past.  The serial number is normally located on the disc case or a box inside the main box.  If you did not purchase the disc from Adobe then it is possible you would have dealt with a redemption code, in which case it would have been up to you to keep a record of the serial number, especially if you did not follow up and register the software.
