Old data retrieval cross hardware platforms

Oracle 11g
A general question.
If we migrate over a period of time from 9i running on Solaris to having an 11g database on Linux with the same database block, how easy would be to retrieve the old taped data and query it from 9i?
Do we need to maintain an Oracle database (say 11g) on Solaris to speed up the import process? What are the best options to perform this in an efficient manner?
FYI, we are intending to move to a cloud like environment on Linux and we have been traditionally running Oracle on Solaris.
Thanks

Hi Kiraly,
I had considered that at first, when the eMac still had Panther installed (a while back).
Unfortunately, besides not owning a FireWire connector cable to connect it to my iMac, I didn't particularly want to lug that heavy eMac back up two flights of stairs...
I realized that the weight of install/restore CDs is about 1/1,000,000 that of the eMac... and that won out.

  • Cross hardware platform migration with Oracle VM

    This is a cross hardware platform migration question. If I have Oracle on Solaris SPARC (64 bit) running in LDOM (currently known as Oracle VM for SPARC) and I want to convert this virtual machine to another virtual machine on Oracle VM Server 2.2 x86, is it possible?

    No. this isn't possible - there are too many variables.

  • Cross hardware platform image cloning from Time Capsule

    Currently have a mid-2009 17" MBPro and will be receiving a new 15" MBPro Retina in August. Question is if there is anything I need to be aware of if I wanted to merely image the new 15" out of the box from the backup image from the 17" via my Time Capsule backup? OS updates done regularly along with weekly virus scans, all clean and no current corruptions when doing a disk health check. Appreciate any and all feedback from the group.

    Try the computer apps PhoneView (Mac) or TouchCopy (Mac & PC):

  • Can I use thunderbolt to retrieve old data?

    A few weeks ago my MacBook Pro wouldn't boot. I took it to the nearest apple store and they said they had to reformat my macbook's inner hard drive. With no other solution I gave them my MacBook. When I got it back they told me it has been formatted and updated to mavericks and they could only save some documents but none were important. I tried using DiskDrill and other softwares, though they did find all my pictures, documents, etc, I couldn't retrieve them as in the end I have to buy the software. So I was wondering, if the softwares did find the old data, can't I use a thunderbolt to connect my mac to another and retrieve the data?
    Thank you

    Thunderbolt is a data transmission protocol, it is not a data restoration application.  If the 'another' you mention is a Mac with your data, you may use Thunderbolt or any other connection protocol to transfer data (such as Firewire or USB).
    Ciao.

  • How do I use old data files with a new installation in Oracle 9i

    I am in an unenviable position, with an unsupported database.
    We are running Oracle 9i on Windows XP. We are upgrading soon to Oracle 11g on a newer platform, but need to get our development environment working first.
    We lost a system that was running our development database without having a database export. The C drive was placed into a new system as the D drive.
    I have loaded Oracle 9i on the C drive, but I have been unable to determine how to point it to the existing data files on the D drive. My search skills may be the limiting factor here...
    We cannot simply load the drive as C, since the hardware is different.
    What are the steps to point the new database software at the data files on the D drive? Or, how do I copy the old data files into the new Oracle Home and have them recognized properly?
    Thanks for any advice.

    Are you stating that you don't know how to use COPY command?
    Can you recreate same directory structure on new C drive as exist on old C drive?
    Can you then drag & drop copies of the files?

  • Real tough data retrieval - assistance needed

    Late 2011 Macbook Pro with 500GB hard drive
    Lion 10.7
    One morning out of absolutely nowhere I get this grey screen with a flashing question mark folder. I take it to the geniuses at the Apple store and they tell me my hard drive has failed (no explanation). My mac is under warranty so they gave me a new hard drive for free, bagged my old hard drive and told me "good luck" retrieving the data.
    I'm on a mission to retrieve the data without paying for services. I have never retrieved data before but I've been doing a lot of forum reading and I have been getting protips from an IT friend who has saved my PC data before.
    As of now, I have been unable to even access the hard drive and so I am reaching out to the community to help me conquer this project.
    the problem is not the OS (according to Apple store)
    when hooking up with the dongle, neither Finder nor Disk Utility detect the bad drive
    the drive will spin when forced by the dongle (so I've ruled out the freezer method)
    I was advised (by friends and forums alike) to download so powerful data retrieval software:
    Data Rescue [did not detect bad external drive]
    Disk Drill [did not detect bad external drive]
    TestDisk (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk) [I can get it up and running but I have no idea how to use this software]
    So that seems to be the big problem, when I hook up my failed drive as an external hard drive, there is no acknowledgement from my MBP that it is connected and as such data recovery programs cannot access it. When I still had it installed in my computer, there was no clicking sound and it doesn't seem like any of the components are jammed up as it still spins.
    Where do I go from here? Please keep in mind that I am new to resolving my own technical problems but I'm willing to learn. Tired of being one of those people who look at computer parts and get anxious.
    NOTE: I haven't tried Target Mode as I do not have a firewire cable or access to another mac (yet). If you think I should try this, please let me know.

    A hard drive that will not divulge BOTH its Make&Model and a reasonable size/capacity to the likes of Disk Utility and data rescue programs has died, and connot be repaired with any software.
    Target Disk mode will not improve anything. The drive is read as a Mac Volume by software. If it won't mount under Mac OS X, it won't mount under Target Disk Mode.

  • OS 10.5.8 Leopard. Recovering old data from Time Machine after HD replacement.

    Okay, I have and iMac dual core Model A1224, EMC 2210, 20" screen, 2.66GHz processor, 2GB RAM, came, when I bought it, with a 500 GB drive circa late 2008. The drive started to fail about 2 weeks ago, random shut downs, wouldn't boot up, couldn't find the OS. Could sometime recover booting up from the original OS disk in the C drive, but eventually even that failed. Had run disk first aid and TechTool Pro6 to no avail, they all passed the drive so it was a mechanical failure,not bad sectors.
    REPLACED the drive with a brand new Seagate Barracuda 1TB drive, figured I was all set, Time Machine had backed up the old drive every day since 2009 to an external 1TB drive. I could even see the data there. Now new drive is installed and I need to load the OS to it and retrieve my data from Time Machine. Put in the old disk, Leopard 10.5.1, and walked along and asked it to bring in the data from Time Machine.... except, the data is saved on Time Machine in a new version of Leopard, ver. 10.5.8 and so the 10.5.1 version can't import it, but of course Migration Assistant will allow you to import it later.
    So, I continue to load the OS via the disk, then go to software update after creating a new computer name, which I didn't want to do. Updated the software so I am now running OS 10.5.8, open Migration Assistant and attempt to migrate / recover the old data from Time Machine. I can get some stuff, but it insists on my resetting everything up all over again, all new accounts in Quicken and Thunderbird and Microsoft Office, no recovery of data already there and I can't access the accounts that were set up by others, it indicates I don't have sufficient privileges though I was an Administrator on the old computer and on the current system as well.
    Frankly, I need that old data, so how do I get it? Do I bite the bullet and upgrade the system to Snow Leopard OS10.6.XX, will that allow me access to old data under OS 10.5.8? Will it be backwards compatible? How about moving up to Lion? Would that be a better way to go and will I be able to recover that old data then?
    VERY frustrated here! Thanks for help or direction you all can provide.

  • Should I use a data retrieval service or software to recover data ?

    Please pardon the length of this post.
    Here's the setup for our office:
    Computer 1:
    10.4.8 OS X
    1 GHZ PowerPC G4: silver grey tower, grey apple
    1MB L3 Cache
    256 MB DDR SDRAM
    Computer 2:
    10.4.8 OS X
    Dual 450 MHZ PowerPC G4: blue grey tower, blue apple
    256 MB SDRAM
    Computer 3:
    10.4.8 OS X
    1 GHZ PowerPC G4 IMac Flat Screen:
    256 MB DDR SDRAM
    I have 2 LaCie Big Disk d2 Extremes daisy chained and connected to the IMac. We use the first to store all of our data to keep our local disks free. The second d2 is the backup to the first. The other 2 computers connect to the d2's via an ethernet hub. The d2's are each partitioned into 4 compartments.
    A couple of days ago I started the system up when I got in in the morning, and the main d2 would not open. I ran disk utility, but it said that the drive was damaged beyond it's ability to repair. I ran DiskWarrior, and it gave me this message:
    "The directory of disk 'G4' cannot be rebuilt. The disk was not modified. The original directory is too severely damaged. It appears another disk utility has erased critical directory information. (3004, 2176)."
    I contacted Disk Warrior tech support and after a series of exchanges that had me send him dated extracted from the terminal function, he said this:
    "It appears that the concatenated RAID inside your LaCie
    drive has failed (your 500GB drive is actually 2 250GB
    hard drives). That is why we only saw 2 partitions
    on "disk3". A possible cause could be a failed bridge
    in the case.
    You may be looking at sending this drive to a data recovery service.
    However, it is possible that we may be able to recover data
    from the partitions that we CAN see. What we would be doing would cause no damage to your data
    unless the hard drives were having a mechanical failure (ie, the
    head crashed and was contacting the platters, similar to scratching
    a record). But from what I've seen, I don't feel that is the case.
    I believe the piece of hardware that 'bridges' the two drives to
    make them act as one has failed. that's why we can only see data
    about 1 of the 2 drives in the case.
    We would only be attempting to gather data off the drive. Since
    data recovery services sometimes charge for amount of data retrieved,
    it's up to you how you want to proceed."
    Most of the data from the past 5 years for our business stands at being lost. Only some of it had been properly backed up on the second drive, due to some back up software issues. I want to do whatever I can to retrieve all of, or at least some of the data. From what the Alsoft technician said, do you think that the data recovery software available to the consumer is going to be robust enough to retrieve at least the data from the one disk in the drive that is recognizable (there are 2 250gig disks in the d2X. Only one is responding at all). If so, do these Softwares further damage the disks? Or should I just send the drive to a data recovery service?
    I'd like to try to extract some of it myself via over the counter retrieval software, but I don't know whether to trust these programs?
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    My 2 cents:
    I have used FileSalvage
    http://www.subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1
    to recover files from damaged disks. It works as advertised, within limits. Some files may be too damaged to recover. More importantly yo get to scan the disk before actually recovering, and it will give you a list of what it thinks it can recover.
    My experience was that it recovered approx 85% of the data.
    YMMV but they do have a trial.

  • My 2 TB Time Capsule's memory is full because it will not automatically delete old files as it is supposed to, so it is giving me zero backup of my two computers now.  How can this be fixed so my Time Capsule deletes the old data and saves the new?

    My 2 TB Time Capsule’s memory is full because it will notautomatically delete old files as it is supposed to, so it is giving me zerobackup of my two computers now. How can this be fixed so my Time Capsule deletes the old data and savesthe new?
    Neither my local computer consultant nor I have been ableto change any of the settings in Time Machine to correct this problem.  Working with the choices in the TimeMachine, there does not appear that there is any way to change the frequency ofthe backups either, so, after a year has elapsed, the time capsule is full, andmy only choice appears to be to erase all the current data on the Time Capsuleand start over, something that I do not want to at all let alone repeat on anannual basis.  My questions are:
    What can be done to have my Time Capsule delete old filesas it is supposed to do, so it has memory available to allow my computers toback up?
    Is this a software problem that can be fixed online or isdoes this require a mechanical fix of defective hardware?

    How much data is being backed-up from each Mac?  (see what's shown for Estimated size of full backup under the exclusions box in Time Machine Prefs > Options).
    Is there any other data on your Time Capsule, besides the backups?
    Most likely, there just isn't room.  Time Machine may be trying to do a very large (or full) backup of one or both Macs, and can't.  Since it won't ever delete the most recent backup, there has to be enough room for one full backup plus whatever it's trying to back up now, plus 20% (for workspace).

  • Data retrieval failed

    Greetings all,
    i'm having a problem in order to retrieve data from oracle 10g views.
    Notes: Data retrieval from other tables are just fine. Some views are created for me in order to share some data from other databases. As far as i concern, we actually use the same syntax (as retrieving data from table) in order to retrieve data from view. This is my codes:
    if (($_POST['barcode'] != "") || ($_POST['sname'] != "") ) {
    include("conn.php");
         if (!$conn){
              echo "Error!Cannot connect to database, please try again later";
              exit;
         @mysql_select_db($db);
                   $sname = strtoupper ($_POST['sname']);
                   $barcode = strtoupper ($_POST['barcode']);
                   $ss = strtoupper ($_POST['ss']);
                   print $sname;
                   print $barcode;
                   print $ss;
                   if ($barcode != ""){
                   $stid = OCIParse($conn, 'SELECT NAMA FROM VIEW_A WHERE SEM=:ss AND BAR=:bc');
                   oci_bind_by_name($stid, ":bc", $barcode);
                   oci_bind_by_name($stid, ":ss", $ss);
                   }elseif($sname != ""){
                   $stid = OCIParse($conn, 'SELECT NAMA FROM VIEW_A WHERE SEM=:ss AND NAMA=:sn');
                   oci_bind_by_name($stid, ":sn", $sname);
                   oci_bind_by_name($stid, ":ss", $ss);
                   $r = OCIExecute($stid);
                   $row = oci_fetch_array($stid, OCI_ASSOC + OCI_RETURN_NULLS);
                   if ($row==0)
         ?>
    No Records!
    <?php
                   else
                   while (($rows = oci_fetch_array($stid, OCI_BOTH))) {
         ?>
    Name:: <?php echo $rows[0]; $rows['NAMA'];?>
    <?php }}} ?>

    I didn't understand what real problem you have?
    If you missing one row of data, it's because you don't print the first row out.
    If you mean that results are not ordered, then you need to add an ORDER BY clause to the queries.
    PS you have a mysql call in there. Also you mix the old and new OCI function naming style.

  • Content Rendered from UCM after updation returns old data

    Hi
    The requirement that i have in place is as below:
    1. Portal application should have an option to display content from UCM(Content here is just the metadata like title, description, etc of the content)
    2. The application should also have options for adding, updating and deleting the content.
    3. The updates should immediately reflect on the display.
    I am achieving the above using RIDC apis, not using OOTB task flows.
    But the issue that am facing here is that after performing any of add,update or delete the results fetched are still the older ones. There fore my display screen still shows old data.
    And one observation is that the updates are reflected only when i send a new browser request.
    I have tried refreshing, clearing browser cache, but nothing seems to work. Not sure if the content is being cached on the UCM server itself.
    If so how do i clear it?
    I am using GET_SEARCH_RESULTS to fetch the data and display.
    And i am using PS4 version of webcenter.
    I really need some help on this ASAP as it is in a critical state or any work around please.
    Thanks

    Hi Nelson
    The code snippet used for fetching the content metadata is as below
    To retrieve all the Folder information
    requestBinder.putLocal("IdcService","COLLECTION_DISPLAY");
    requestBinder.putLocal("hasCollectionID","true");
    requestBinder.putLocal("dCollectionID",rootFolderId);
    ServiceResponse response = idcClient.sendRequest(idcContext, requestBinder);
    DataBinder resultbinder = response.getResponseAsBinder();
    resultbinder.getResultSet("COLLECTIONS");
    List folderList = new ArrayList();
    for (DataObject data : resultSet.getRows())
    String parentId = data.get("dParentCollectionID");
    if (folderId.equals(parentId))
    folderList.add(data);
    To retrieve all the content information under a folder
    requestBinder.putLocal("IdcService","GET_SEARCH_RESULTS");
    requestBinder.putLocal("QueryText",
    new StringBuilder().append("xCollectionID >= `").append(docInfo.get("xCollectionID")).append("` <AND> xCollectionID <= `").append(docInfo.get("xCollectionID")).append(" ` ").toString());
    requestBinder.putLocal("SortField","dInDate");
    requestBinder.putLocal("SortOrder","DESC");
    idcClient.sendRequest(idcContext, requestBinder);
    resultbinder.getResultSet("SEARCH_RESULTS");
    List files = new ArrayList();
    for (DataObject dataObject : resultSet.getRows())
         files.add(dataObject);
    Once i have the list i just iterate over it and display using <af:outputText> or <af:commandLink>
    Till now havent been able to find the issue.
    The ony solution which helped this is to call this retrieval method twice before displaying. But this is creating a huge performance issue.
    So i am looking for a proper solution for this.
    Please help.
    Thanks
