Old disks/new iMac

Hi
Every few months or so I get ambitious and convert a few more old family vhs tapes to dvd. In the process, I've received really great help from the talented folks in this discussion. Thank you. Thank you. I just ordered a new duo core Intel 20" iMac, and because I'm a struggling learner, I have a question--will I be able to use our old CD-R and DVD-R blank disks with the new superdrive? We have quite a few of them left (n=70-80)?

You should be able to use your old CD-R's and the
DVD-R's just fine, but remember to burn them at a
speed that is compatible with the speed they were
designed to be burned at!! it should say it on the
CD/DVD - R's cover or printed on. Good luck and
enjoy your new Mac
Thanks. I'm very anxious for the new Mac to arrive.

  • Transferring from old to new iMac computer

I am buying a new iMac to replace my 4 year old iMac. I want  want to transfer everything from my old iMac to the new one.
My question is which transfer method is best, Target disk or Time Machine?
Am not sure of exactly what happens when I connect the TM to the new computer & if this will download everything including apps.
Looking for pros & cons of each method before I start.

    Bob,
Please click the link below for a Time Machine tutorial:
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#timemachinebasics
Time Machine works quite well however as with any system it should be checked from time to time to guarantee everything is still working OK. Kind of like checking the oil on your car or double checking the front door is locked at night.
If you want to learn more about TM then I would also recommend looking over these TM FAQ's put together by Pondini.

  • Migration from old to new iMac do you need to use set up on new or go straight to migration?

Just got a new iMac and going to migrate from my old 2008 iMac, info from Apple Support is a bit confusing but I want to know if it is best to use the "Set Up" on new iMac before migration or go straight into migration.
Also the support info says to connect both using ethernet as one option (which is my option) and connected to your network, how do you do this as there is only one ethernet port on each machine and if connected together it would not be possible to connect to a network, ie, the internet via my ISP. Suppot says no router etc needed.
Somewhat confused so if there is anyone out there who has done this I would appreciate their comments.
Thank you for any help forthcoming.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If you want to do it by hand just drag & drop the iPhoto library located in the Pictures folder of your Home folder on the old iMac to the same location on the new iMac.

  • Problem moving Mail from old to new iMac

I followed instructions about moving Mail--with all mail folders and old emails intact--from my old PowerPC iMac to my new Intel 3.20 MHz iMac. I copied the folder "Mail" inside my user library and the "plist" file from Preferences onto my thumb drive from the old computer, then uploaded these files onto the new one. I was able to easily replace the "plist" file with the onscreen prompt (Do you want to replace?), but the Mail folder went into the Library folder as a duplicate only. So, I tried to delete the original and unused Mail folder, but everytime I sent to the trash and empty the trash, it magically reappears, so that my old emails don't show up when I open the Mail program. I know the files are there--but how do I make my new iMac recognize them and how do I delete the empty Mail folder that was on the new computer originally to avoid confusion? Thanks for any advice you can give.

You may need to rename the copy to be simply Mail. This is best done having first removed any Mail folder on the new Mac, but this should work as well.

  • Old disk-loading iMac upgrade from 8.6 to 9.2.2?

    Hello everyone,
I have an ancient Bondi Blue iMac (disk-loading) with OS 8.6. I would like to upgrade it to Mac OS 9. I can buy OS 9 from Fastmac.com for $30, but they are sold out of the OS 9.0 CD.
My question is: can I buy the 9.2.2 CD full install instead? Could I upgrade directly from 8.6? Here's the site: http://store.fastmac.com/productinfo.php?productsid=101
    Thanks!
    matt

*There are no universal full installer OS 9.2.2 CDs.* You will need to purchase either a univeral full installer OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.1 CD. Then you can go to Apple's Download site & download the OS 9.2.2 upgrade for free.
You can get the above mentioned CDs from:
(I have not checked these links in awhile. Hope most still work)
Make sure you check out all of the following links as prices vary for the OS 9.x cds.
Ask the vendors the color of the CD lable. All universal full install CDs are white w/an orange/golden 9.x on it.
    http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/index.html(RECOMMENDED BY APPLE)
    http://welovemacs.com/apsyso.html
    http://www.applerescue.com
Do NOT buy a gray installation CD - those are not universal installers but model-specific [NO matter what the seller says about them!] OEM-versions have caused problems in the past when used on other computer models.

  • Problems with new iMac and Maverick: ITunes and Time Machine

Just upgraded from an old to new iMac, migrated my data from my old machine and installed Maverick. Couple of major problems.
    1. My iTunes library won't open. I've been into the library folders but can't work out how to get the old library to load. Decided to try a sync back from my iPhone but while the phone tells me that it has synced with my Mac, the music hasn't moved across.
    2. Time Machine doesn't work. On my old machine I was using an external Omega hard drive but when I plug it into the new Mac it isn't even showing up on the desktop. Clearly there's a connection of some sort as the disc is powering from the Mac. Prior to upgrade, I was getting messages that Time Machine couldn't be updated but I put that down to my failing elderly Mac, which kept crashing, freezing and needed replacing. Perhaps the external drive was dying too.
    Any suggestions welcome.
    Thanks,
    Mike

I dragged the installer from the install disk to my desktop and was more successful in installing problem CS2 apps. Make sure to update everything as well. Some times it takes a restart to get the finickiness out of PS.

  • External drive not readable on new iMac

Hi, I recently bought a NEW iMac with USB 3 and Thunderbolt. I am upgrading from an OLDER iMac with firewire 800 and 400. The OLD iMac was operating on OSX 10.58. The NEW iMac is operating on Mountain Lion OSX 10.82. I have been using 4TB G-Drive for about 6 months on the OLD iMac. I connected the G-Drive to the NEW iMac via and I get the message: "the disk you inserted is not readable by this computer."
I go back to my OLD iMac and the drive mounts fine. So I backed up the G-Drive to another external, connected it to my NEW iMac (via USB 3) and re-formatted it. Now it mounts on the desktop and is acting normal on the NEW iMac. However, when I connect it via firewire to the OLD iMac it no longer mounts on that computer and I get the message "the disk you inserted is not readable by this computer."
    What is going on?
Whichever computer I format the drive with, it wont mount on the other. I've never encountered something like this! It is important that I am able to use this drive on multiple MAC computers as I am regularly moving between editing systems and collaborating with other people on various Mac computers. I don't think it is a firewire / USB 3 issue as it works with both cabels (once it has been formatted by either the old or new iMac). I am thinking it has something to do with Mountain Lion?
    Any ideas and expertese appreciated.

Yes. The G-Drive required a firmware update which was provided to me by G-Drive Tech Staff.
I downloaded the update and then after re-formatting the drive it now works with all computers (Firewire, USB 3, etc). The problem was connected to Firewire and USB 3.
The file they provided was called: G-Drive USB 3.0 Firmware Update Utility.

  • I bought a new iMac and am giving my old iMac to my brother.  I do not have my installation disk.  How do I erase all my information?

I recently bought a new iMac and am giving my old iMac to my brother.  I read up on how to erase my information before handing it over to my brother but they process included having my installation disk.  I do not have that disk.  I need to erase my information and upgrade the computer.

"Tiger Tiger burning bright ..." (sorry for the poetic diversion ...)
You can call Apple Customer Support, give them the serial number of the unit and pay $16 per disk to get new copies.  But they may not re-burn Tiger anymore.
If that is the case, you have to consider buying Tiger disks from an online store, or move up in the cat family.
Leopard disks only require PPC processors, and run $180 or so.  Apple *may* have some Leopard in stock if you call them.  Else you go online.
If the sysem has Intel processor, you can jump up to Snow Leopard, which is $29 in the Apple Online Store.
AppleMenu > About This Mac ... what is the memory amount and processor type?

  • How to migrate Mail & Contacts from backup disk of old PPC iMac (10.3.9) to new iMac (10.8.1)?

How to migrate Mail & Contacts from backup disk of old PPC iMac (10.3.9) to new iMac (10.8.1)?
The Firewire disk is connected and have been able to copy across document folders etc, but Migration Assistant doesn't find the disk so that method no good.  Any help appreciated.

Thanks, that looks very comprehensive.  Wish I'd seen it before completing Set-Up Assistant initially!  Will follow his instructions and report back.

  • Running an old disk image on a new iMac

Ok, so to anyone reading this, I do know that I am unable to boot into an external image of my drive if the image is made from an older piece of hardware... IE: I can't boot my MacBook Pro (image) from 2007 onto my new iMac from 2011.
What I would like to know, though, is if it is somehow possible to do a transfer of this information into a newer format? Meaning, am I able to basically "migrate" the information on that disk without actually installing it onto my current computer, so I am able to boot into it as if the user had been migrated onto this computer, then had an image made of it with all the info corrected to this computer, then have my iMac be all "oh yeah, that hard drive? It's from me, I don't mind booting to it even though all the programs are old..."
I realize I'm missing a bit of description here, but... Yeah
tl;dr: I wanna "migrate" an image of an older computers hard drive so I can boot it on my new one. Without actually migrating it onto my iMac.

It's not so much that the disk image is old, it is that the OS X version in that disk image is too old to be able to boot your new machine. OS X versions from 2007 can not boot a 2011 iMac under any circumstances.
If you want a bootable backup volume to be available, your choices are -
    • Partition your internal hard drive, and clone your exisiting volume onto that new volume.
    • Get an external firwire drive, format it appropriately, then clone your internal drive to it.
You could also migrate your old stuff (files and apps, not OS0 to either of the solutions I gave.
However, note that Lion does not support Rosetta. Rosetta is software used by earlier versions of OS X on Intel-processor machines to allow the use of PPC programs on Intel machines. Since Lion does not support Rosetta, it is quite probable that several of your old programs will not be able to work on your new machine running Lion. Makes no difference whether they are on an internal or external drive - if they are PPC programs and need Rosetta, they will not work in Lion.

  • HT3819 I want to send my itunes library from my old macbook (start up disk nearly full) to my new iMac then delete my itunes library from my old macbook.  Is Homesharing my best choice for this?

I want to send my itunes library from my old macbook (start up disk nearly full) to my new iMac.   Then delete my itunes library from my old macbook.  Is Homesharing my best choice for this?
What I don't want to happen is once I delete my itunes library from my old Macbook that the iMac itunes library to delete itself because I am using Homesharing.  Does homesharing sync and make that happen?

    Here is some help.

After confirming that all your stuff is on the drive, delete the photos you have copied. You will need to empty the iPhototrash to free up the space.

  • Can I use my old macbook as a disk drive for my new iMac?

My husband just bought me a new new iMac (yey!) but had assumed it would have a dvd drive (as you do).  It doesn't.  So can I use my old Macbook to upload cds and dvds and somehow import to my itunes on my new computer?

As long as your Macbook is up-to-date.  Go to system preferences>Internet and Wireless>Sharing>check mark CD/DVD sharing.

  • HT201250 I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was?

I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? I want to make sure I will still have various important files on my new computer, like my songs in iTunes, my photos in iPhoto, etc, etc. Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one.
