Old drive put into new Mac - all gone a bit wrong.

Hi there,
the scenario -
2 Macs - one Macbook Pro 15", one Macbook Pro 13" - the 13" is the newer of the two. We (I) was advised that I could simply swap hard drives (both 500 GB sata drives) and place the older drive into the newer 13" Macbook Pro. So i did...
When it moved, i started up the 13" and it didn't recognise any data, nor had a login, and wanted to start from scratch. Ok, i thought, so i can't do it after all and placed the hard drive back in the older 15" Macbook Pro.
Now, when i come to book the older 15" up, it isn't how it was and has lost it's bootable info, but can still understand (from looking in Disk Utlility) that it has OSX installed on it.
My Question:
Is there a way i can make the old (ex-working) drive in the 15" Macbook Pro, bootable and back to the stage where it works again, in that 15" MBP? i.e. as it was before i started the task?
Thanks in advance.
Ivan

Hi OGELTHORP,
Thanks for the email and reply,
I have been advised by the person using the mac, not to worry about the information required in the email sent to me on the back on the problem.
(Interestingly information that was asked in the email didn't appear on the website when i entered my serial number in, purely because we've not actually used the new 13" MBP at all yet. The only thing that came up was MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)) and the serial number. It also had the eligiblity information and support info, but nothing that would show the exact model or OSX version.
The 15" MBP info as follows: MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011) and the serial number, but doesn't contain an exact model number nor information on what OSX was currently installed.
I presume as i read Mavericks in the about this mac, the other day, this is what he is running on the 15" MBP.
So, im still in the same position, but we are simply putting the brand new drive back into the new 13" MBP and running it's installation procedure and will restore his data from a backup we made previously.
But for peace of mind, and problem solving purposes couild we continue down th route of working out why, or whether i could get back up and running on the older MBP ?

  • Starting up problems from an old boot drive in a new mac pro

Just purchased a refurb mac pro last weekend through the apple store. I took my old drive my my first mac pro and was trying to usee it for the boot drive, That machine did not come with snow leopard. I did upgrade it to 10.6.6. When I start up from that drive in the new mac pro it was either starting up real slowly or starting up and would not give me a cursor or. On some occasion I would get a translucent blue huge on the screen. Or I could get a clear screen but nothing would happen if I clicked to open anything. I called support and we reinstalled the on the old drive. I seemed stable and was booting properly from the old drive. Then I upgraded to 10.6.6 again. We used the software the new machine came with for this process. I maybe used the new boot drive for maybe 50 seconds. Apple support wishes for me to go through the process of isolating elements. I've been running the new drive since yesterday. Everything is working well. Except after letting it run for a period of time yesterday got s grey screen after it went to sleep. We'll see what happens with that today. I do not know if it's coincidence or not but the old system went hicky after I started up Paralllels desktop.I'm using Parallelsto run Playon. I'm wondering if Parallels or the xp emulation machine I'm running with it is still trying to read the old macpro ? It did work however. I'm just curious that it's altering something in the Mac osx ? Another thing should I subtract other wirleeless choice devices on the old drive's system ? The old macpro had wireless but the module was installed aftermarket by a mac store.
    Thanks

Hard to follow your steps and thoughts. Maybe re-read and cut it into actual steps.
Always clone a system so you have a bootable backup image.
Make sure your software and drivers are compatible.
2010s boot into 64-bit kernel mode by default.
Apple still sells 2009s also on Specials page.
Your old Mac Pro wouldn't come with 10.6 unless it came out in Sept 2009 or later.
Is Parallels current? Is it attached to Windows partition or VM only? does it care that it is running on new hardware? that usually is a non-starter.
New Mac is also a good time to do thorough spring house cleaning. Clean install all the applications and drivers.
Pull your old drive out. The only use for it would be to run Setup Assistant to import your home account prefs.
The "new" refurbished hard drive is still in same state it was in when you got it?
Sleep issue. you may have external devices or 3rd party drivers or bad cable somewhere.
    Wireless?
At this point I doubt I can read between the lines.

  • I have recently transferred data from my old PC to my new Mac Book Pro (Mavericks OS). Each transfer creates a new User account (titled 'Owner', 'Owner 1', etc).  I want to merge the files from these transfers into my main user account.  Help?

I have recently transferred data from my old PC to my new Mac Book Pro (Mavericks OS). Each transfer creates a new User account (titled 'Owner', 'Owner 1', etc).  I want to merge / consolidate the files from these newly created User accounts into my main user account.  Is there a tutorial for this process, or any tips?  Anyone?

Four transfers.  After the initial attempt with Migration Assistant failed (after hours and hours of wifi transfer) I did "mini-transfers" of more manageable, smaller bits of files -- my music in one, photos in another, etc.  Since posting my question in this forum, i contacted Apple support, chatted with Angela, and she suggested getting an ethernet-USB adapter for my mac, connecting my external drive with ethernet and transferring files manually -- that is, NOT using the Migration Assistant at all.  She sent me this link to help:  Switch Basics: Migrate your Windows files to your Mac.  I appreciate your response, tho', Csound1!

  • How do I move all files from an old PPC to a new Mac Mini?

How do I move all files from an old PPC to a new Mac Mini?

The new mini has a Firewire 800 port. Likely the PPC version only has Firewire 400.  The OP will need a converter cable which is why I was asking first about what hardware is available and how much is being copied.
Probably go with using the external hard drive if you decide all you want are data files.

  • I cannot transfer data from my external hard drive to my new mac

I had to get a new hard drive put into my macbook pro because it was failing. So, I moved all my data onto an external hard drive so I would not lose anything. But now I cannot get iphoto or imovie back onto my computer. It says I cannot open it because it is a time machine back up. I don't want to have to purchase iPhoto and iMovie again just because I had to replace my hard drive.

Copying the files directly from a Time Machine backup may be possible but I don't recommend it. Your new hard disk is essentially a new computer to Time Machine, and it will have problems understanding where to put the individual files. What you're trying to do is just not the right way to go about it.
To restore from a Time Machine backup, boot Lion Recovery and select "Restore from Time Machine backup".

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's the classic behaviour after using Migration Assistant and that's normal.
To transfer the data from the new user account to your old user account, you can follow some steps. Here is all the information you need to do this > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472

  • HT1751 i bought a new, larger external hard drive. copied my itunes library from the old drive to the new one, changed the libarary location in Edit/Preferences/Advanced to the new drive. iTunes will not start or run unless old hard drive plugged in.??

I bought a new, larger external hard drive. I have my iTunes library on the external drive instead of C: drive, Using Windows 7.
I copied my itunes library from the old drive to the new one, changed the libarary location in Edit/Preferences/Advanced to the new drive.
iTunes will not start or run unless the old hard drive is plugged in.
If I disconnect the old drive iTunes shuts down.
    Any ideas. ??

    Hello kskip,
Thank you for providing so much information about what is going on.  It sounds like you have setup iTunes to save new content to your new external hard drive in iTunes>Preferences, but it sounds like iTunes is not opening iTunes Library.itl file on the new external drive.  You have one last step to take to have iTunes point to your new external hard drive rather than your old one:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
You should see the following screen:
    Additional information
If you do not see the screen above, then you did not hold the correct key at the correct time. You may want to try again. Note that if you pinned iTunes to the Start menu programs, and open it that way, it may not work.
Once you select "Choose Library," you will need to navigate to the iTunes Library.itl file on your new external drive.

I cannot connect my old pc to my new mac book pro. Can anyone help me through this process. Thx.

OK. Starting with iTunes: Macworld - How to transfer iTunes libraries between PC and Mac.
Get yourself an external hard drive and format it using NTFS on your PC. OS X can read from an NTFS formatted drive. Copy your photos and documents to this drive. Use the drive to transfer you iTunes data via the method outlined in the above linked article. This will prove easier and faster than using a network.

Old users.dbf have 3gbytes(dates from old oracle instal)In Oracle, a database is more than just a single file.
That single file is like a single piece of the puzzle. It alone cannot be the picture. Nor can you derive what the picture looks like from a single puzzle piece.

Change your settings in Sharing preferences, for one, and remove the server out of the Finder's sidebar. Obviously, this is the result of transfering all your other computer's preferences to your new computer.
