Old DW4 website files - how do I access and use .zip files?

I have been given a .zip file of a now defunct website (Dreamweaver 4) which I wish to ressurrect! Do I need DW4 to access these website files or are the newer versions backward complient?  Absolute novice so any advice/assistance gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

1. Double click your .zip file and drag the contents out onto your desktop to extract the archive.
Don't just attempt to use the files in the .zip archive within DW without moving them out.
They will appear to be "browseable" to your OS, but they won't/can't work as a website while in the archive
2. Make sure all of the files are within a single folder (not the Desktop itself)
Desktop > MyWebsiteName > all website files
3. From your current version of DW, go to Site > New Site...
4. Give the site a name and browse to the folder from Step 2 for Local Site Folder
5. If you have your FTP info, you can enter it under Servers at this time, but you don't need it right away to create the Site Definition to start working with DW
6. Hit Save
From there on out, you will work from DW while your site name from Step 4 is displayed in the left dropdown menu of the Files Window (go to Window > Files or hit F8 if it's not visible)
Snakeyez warning about deprecated features will likely be your biggest hurdle while working on an old site in a new version of DW. Hopefully, the original creator didn't use much of the old DW Spry based functionality.

Clarisworks, you need Appleworks, which will only work with Mac OS X10.6.8 or earlier.  See this tip if you must go newer.  Mac Pros with newer hardware configuration than July 20, 2011 can't use Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier without this tip and then it would be Mac OS X Server.  I'm not sure if the new black Mac Pro supports that configuration or not.
iPhoto, there is an iPhoto for all versions of Mac OS X.
iTunes, there is an iTunes for all versions of Mac OS X.  Note with iTunes versions 11 and later, which are needed for syncing with iOS 7 or or later, you will lose coverflow, if you liked that feature.  Sadly you can't run an older version of iTunes from within Mac OS X 10.9 or later.

DMG is able to be opened by all versions of Mac OS X.  This are just "disk images" which store programs on a virtual disk that will open when double clicked.    Frequently you'll find the installer of the said program inside.  To find out if the program itself is compatible with 10.7 through 10.9, see http://www.roaringapps.com/

does my macbook air have a built in virus scan?  how can I access and use it? also any recommendations of what software if this is not avail ?

Contrary to what Geeks on Hugs is telling you, Mac OS X does indeed have a basic malware scanner. It is not a feature that is directly accessible to the user, and works a bit differently than every other malware scanner out there. Gatekeeper, which has been mentioned here, is entirely separate, and provides a different method for helping to protect you against malware.
The anti-malware scanner in Mac OS X is called XProtect. When you download an application (or any other kind of executable code), it is automatically "quarantined," so that when you open it you're asked if you really want to do that. I'm sure you're very familiar with this aspect of Mac OS X if you have ever downloaded any apps from outside the App Store. What you don't know, though, is that each time you try to open a new app, that app is checked by XProtect. If it is identified as malware, you will not be allowed to open it, and will be warned that it's malware.
At this time, there is no known malware that can infect a properly up-to-date Mac. All current malware will be blocked by one or more methods.
For more information, see my Mac Malware Guide.

  • How do I access and use my main computer over my local network ?

I have a wireless internet connection that currently runs from the outside antenna into the house via ethernet. My internet provider is setting up a second wireless system so that a computer 1/2 mile away can share the connection. I believe they are going to run the signal from my existing antenna into a router that will connect to the ethernet wire to my house and to an access point that will shoot a signal from a second antenna to my computer 1/2 mile away.
I'd like to know the best way to access the computer in my house from the one 1/2 mile away.
I'd like to be able to access and use files on my home computer so that all changes are kept on it. I'd also like to access any e-mail messages that Mail has recieved.
My ISP said that they would have to enable VPN.
I'd like to know if enabling file sharing would be enough, or do I need this Vine program I've read about on this forum, or do I need to set my home computer up as a server, or do I need to do something else ?
I've read about lots of stuff but don't understand any of it very well.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • How do I access and use a DNG file that I have saved?

I have saved a NEF file as a DNG file before making any edits in ACR.  Because the ACR edits will be reflected in the NEF file when it is opened in Elements, I wanted to have a file that I could edit that did not reflect the ACR edits.  I can find the DNG file using Windows Explorer, but I can't seem to open it or make use of it.  Any help will be appreciated.

Jim--I really appreciate your help. However, I'm going to be making a DNG file when I want absolute security. I can't find any way to restore the original NEF image in the ACR program than comes with Elements.
    Jerry H. Robinson
I have never used Camera Raw with Photoshop Elements.  I haven't used Photoshop Elements since version 2.  But I can tell you that in Photoshop and Bridge it is really quite simple.  Using Bridge, simply right click on the raw image, and in the context menu there is an option enabling you to clear the settings.  It is different from one version to the next, but it is there.  I would think that there would be something similar in the Organizer.  Otherwise, one surefire way to do it would be to simply open the folder that contains the raw images and delete the XMP files for the image(s).
I just read your message again.  What do you mean when you say you are making a DNG file when you want absolute security?  That doesn't make sense.  Camera Raw never changes your raw image pixels.  The original raw data is always there, always.  The changes made in Camera Raw are stored as metadata and as such can always be deleted.  The same is true with a DNG file, except that metadata is stored inside the DNG file itself.  In Camera Raw under Elements there must be a method in the Organizer similar to what I described above.
Then you said you couldn't find a way to restore the original NEF image.  Do you mean, literally, the NEF file itself?  Or the look of the original file?  Are you keeping the NEF files?
I think you are missing the point of using DNG files.  Security in and of itself doesn't seem to me a justification for using DNG.  You need to reconsider your workflow and what you are trying to accomplish.  I'm a little unclear as to what you are trying to do.

  • How to backup files to ensure future access and use using a different mac

I recently attempted access backed up data on my LaCie drive from a different Mac notebook. I was blocked. I didn't write down the message, but it essentially advised that the data was locked and I wasn't allowed access. I wasn't given a chance to enter any kind of system password to bypass the lock.
Here is my problem: I recently spilled some wine into my keyboard. Since then, the system has slowed to a crawl and occasionally weird things begin to happen, regardless of which software I am using [eg iPhoto, Quickbooks, idvd, Photoshop, email, and even dashboard]. I know I am very lucky to have any access to my files at all. While I do, I need to back everything up so that I can have access to my files later on. I plan to have my Mac serviced this week. I don't know if it needs to be replaced, or whether it can be repaired.
*+If it can't be repaired, how do I back up my files to ensure future access and use using a different mac?+*

I'll check the example you linked. I appreciate you responding.
I was not trying to boot another system at all. Actually, I was working on a newer mac laptop. I attempted to load a dvd I had created in my idvd on the other mac from the LaCie. I was using a mac because I knew it had all the iLife software I needed in order to work with my idvd components. Honestly though, I don't know if the mac I was using is intel based. I hadn't considered it. Does Apple sell macbooks with intel? No matter.
So, let's see -- I was using the other powerbook to read the LaCie via firewire -- and yes, the LaCie has its own power supply.
If I remember correctly, the denial I received [when attempting to load the idvd file] knew that I had created it. I got the feeling that it wasn't allowing me into the file for security reasons. I just don't remember setting security. Incidentally, I just checked and I do not have a master password set nor do I have FileVault protection turned on.
I'll check that link you sent. Thx again, M~

How do I access ACR using Photoshop CC?  Can I download the latest version of ACR for my camera and use the plug-in with Photoshop CC?  When I had CS5 I could easily access ACR.  Now I have CS6/CC I don't seem to be able to edit my images in ACR.  What do I need to do to access ACR?

The solution would only work on MS IE browsers, as other browsers do not support an XML DOM.
It can be done, but you would be stuck with using the Microsoft broswer. If that is acceptable, I have some example code, and a book recommendation.

  • I need to know how to access and use the Blue Tooth device that comes with the Thinkpad W520

Forgive me for being a techo illiterate. But I know that this thing supports Blue Tooth. And one "problem" with it is although it has a DVD and sound card, music and movies have very lousy audibility. Is there something I can do about that? I can barely hear anything on a movie unless I plug in head phones to the computer. But that leaves me stuck in my seat. I'd like to get cordless headsets. And I'm ready to purchase the Plantronics BackBeat 903+ Wireless Stereo Headphones - Mic, Rich Audio, Bass-boost, Voice Alerts, OpenMic, 3-way Earpiece. And have heard that it's compatable with a pc that has Bluetooth capabilities. but could someone get back to me with exactly how I access and use the Blue Tooth device?

I was searching for how to setup the 903+ and my W520 and came to this thread.
    1. The OP was asking about audio and there are updated audio drivers / tweaks to get it louder / install different drivers.
but if you are going to go BT headset....
    2.  What I did for the 903+
Uninstalled the currently installed ThinkPad Bluetooth program. ( I forget the exact name, came stock and was out of date).
    Required reboot.
Activated the Bluetooth with FN + F5 menu.
Downloaded the updated Bluetooth driver from lenovo (search lenovo driver matrix).
Ran the updated Bluetooth driver install.
    Rebooted for good measure.
    Double-clicked the Bluetooth Tray icon.
    Clicked Add A Device.
Turned off my 903+ and continued to hold down the power to enable pairing mode.
Showed up in devices and added it.
Worked for audio. There are probably additional options for enabling the mic.
Hope that helps whoever might find this thread.
