Old email file

I have an old RTF file with a continuous list of hundreds of email messages, exported from my old Performa probably 15 years ago.  I'd like to get them back into Mail or Outlook or something so they can be searched by date/sender etc.  Below is a sample of what it looks like- the old MIME formatted headers.  Since they're not individual message files or in some sort of mbox container I haven't found an import/conversion solution.  Any help would be great... • How can I import old email files from Simeon into Apple Mail?

I used to use Esys Simeon for PC for mail at work.  I recently found my Simeon email files, which I thought I'd lost.  If possible, I'd love to import them to Mail, to have as part of my general email archive.
The files come as a set of nested folders.  The lowest level of folders each contain a set of separate numbered files each of which contains one email in plain text (complete with all headers).  The folders also contain a number of other '.dat' files with info about the folder contents.
    I'm on Mail 4.5
    Any ideas?
    Mike

    No. But…
one email in plain text (complete with all headers).
How do you know it's plain text? File name extension ".txt"?
Message Handler?) type file system to mbox
Not likely. MH would be text, .dat suggests binary. "Mh" in "mh_cache.dat" may stand for "message handler", but it's not MH.
Try Emailchemy (test it, don't buy it until you know it works). You might have to change file name extensions from .txt to .eml. Or try to find some documentation of Simeon's file formats and directory structure. I doubt it will be easy to find a converter. Given your description, I'd probably use AppleScript.

  • Problems importing old email

Mail crashed on my old macbook pro. I now have a new Macbook Pro and Mail does not recognize old email files as "valid mboxes". In addition, I can't search for the files using spotlight - it doesn't seem to recognized them either. If I open the individual messages, they open in Mail and then Spotlight "sees" them. How do I import these mboxes into Mail?

    Hi
When you do the File - Import from Mail, make sure the folder you choose is the parent of the mailbox files - don't select the files themselves. It should then display the contents of that parent folder, which will be your mailboxes.

  • I can't seem to retrieve my old email from an old iMac

My old iMac is no longer connected to the internet. I want to retrieve my old email files as I had problems trying to transfer this over to my new iMac when I transferred everything else. When I open Mail, it brings up the prompt for setting up the email and I seem to have to go through all the steps, which I don't want to do. I'm not sure I can remember how I'd do that anyway. Is that the only way I can now access it? It is also a  hassle to disconnect my computer and reconnect this one but if there isn't a more direct and easier way, I'll do that.

You are going to have to set up your email account on your Mac if you want to access it....

  • I had a data migration done from old iMac to new iMac, how do I use that file to find my old email contacts, Safari bookmarks, etc ?

I recently had a data migration from old iMac to new iMac 11.2
How do I use that data file to get old email contacts, Safari bookmarks, etc ?

FireWire cables are dirt cheap and that's how you should be doing the migration. You might have to start over, wiping the new machine's HD, and restoring the software as described in the Everything Mac manual that came with it. See Best Practices and Setup new Mac for more details.

  • What file name, are old emails saved under in backups?

Time Machine, does not seem to operate properly, past the date when I clean installed Yosemite. My files are all there, but I can only find them by going into my drive, and either searching for the file in Time Machine, or searching for it in my backup drive. I cannot restore a mail file, by opening mail, and time machine. It works fine up until the date, when I installed Yosemite. I have done 2 different  completely clean installs, and one using migration assistant, wt a multitude of problems. I am done wt doing that. My iMac is finally running smoothly, and I have managed to migrate everything back into my iMac, except for my old emails. I'm pretty sure that I could restore my emails, as long as I knew where there there supposed to be stored on my iMac. I could basically restore them, by either looking in my backup drive where they are before I installed Yosemite. What file name, are old Maverick emails saved under in backups?

The information viewed in Contacts is not located in a single file, nor a single directory.
[Copied from another thread I responded to recently:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24658329#24658329]
This MIGHT be include all the files you need, but there might also be Preferences files needed from another directory.
Also, I migrated my data from an older OS X version (10.6.8) where the app was called Address Book. On brand new systems, it is called Contacts, and the correct directory might be named Contacts.
NOTE: Be sure to replace Macintosh HD below with the actual hard drive name if not Macintosh HD, and username below with the actual user's name...
Transfer all the files from Macintosh HD/Users/username/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/
That WILL INCLUDE each of these three subdirectories where the necessary files and data are stored:
    Macintosh HD/Users/username/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/images
    Macintosh HD/Users/username/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Metadata
    Macintosh HD/Users/username/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Sources

  • How do you copy and file old emails by year date?

I have a load of old emails in my inbox/sent folders which I would like to keep on file. Is there an easy way to copy all mail dated 2012 and drop them in a separate file ..
    Thank you

There is an add-on to TB which allows import and export of emails in various formats to a separate storage medium (external disk, thumb drive, etc.).
One of it's many options is to search and export by various criteria. You can select a date range as one of those options.
The instructions on how to download and install it can be found at http://barryduggan.info/exportMail.php

  • How do I get old emails from Time Machine into a new Mail?

I have (I hope) email data in Time machine as of April 8  which I can't figure out how to get into my newly reinstalled version of Mail.
I took over my brother-in-law's iMac on April 8, and closed his User ID, saving it in a .dmg file.  Now that he has a new computer, he would like his old emails, so I reactivated his user ID, and reinstalled his email accounts in Mail as of May 27.  When I look at the Time Machine Backups drive, there is a data folder for April 8, but when I open my newly re-installed Mail and click on Time Machine it only goes back to May 27.
Is there a way to get at the April 8 data?
    Thanks,
    jrguest1

I set up an admin account for myself, logged on to it, and then followed the procedure in the help file to delete his account, saving it as a .dmg file.  Then, when he asked for his old emails, I followed the procedure in the help file to restore a deleted user account and copied the contents of the .dmg into it.
I'm not entirely confident I got the restoration sequence right, since I find the order of steps in the help file confusing. But everything except the Mail data seems to be recovered.
Another source of trouble may be the email account settings:  when I opened Mail under his log-on, there were no accounts set up: I recreated them using his email address and password, but Mail may well be treating these as new accounts, rather than re-opened old accounts.
    Thanks, John

  • How can I recover old emails from previous versions of Apple Mail?

I bought a new MacBook Pro Retina display in late 2013. I loaded all my applications and data from Time Machine since my old Mac had died. Unfortunately, the migration program didn't recover most of my email files. In one of the discussions here, it said this was a known problem, and I assumed my old emails were gone forever. For the most part, this wasn't a huge problem, but recently, I had cause to want maybe a dozen or so of those emails, so I went back to try to find a solution.
I did find a discussion here that told how to locate the old mbox file in Time Machine, copy it to the desktop, then import it to Mail. I was able to recover the mbox files without any difficulty, but when I try to import them (using "Files in mbox format"), I get a message saying, "No valid mbox files were found."
Most of the recovered mbox files are hierarchical (i.e., the mbox file shows as a folder in Mail), but I get the same message whether I try to import at the folder level or the mailbox level.
Any ideas? Could Text read the contents of the mbox files?

If you don't have backups, see Recovering deleted files.

That's what I'd do, since they are all free apps. Be sure & delete in iTunes as well as on your phone. When prompted in iTunes, move all files to trash & empty your trash. You don't want any trace of them left.

  • I want to back up an IMAP account via POP3 in Thunderbird but it will not download old emails that are still on the server. How can I do this?

I wand to use Thunderbird to back up and purge old emails from an account via POP3. This account is accessed by other users using IMAP on their computers and phones.
I want to archive and purge old messages from the server using Thunderbird. But, it will not download messages that apparently are marked as read on the server via IMAP.

Pop mail accounts must be set up to 'leave messages on the server'.
    check this before using.
    * Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
    or
    * menu icon > Options > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
select: 'leave messages on the server'
optional: select: 'for at most xx days' this will delete anything older than specified number of days select 'Until I delete them' when you delete an email it will be deleted off the server.
click on Ok to save settings.
Pop mail accounts only look at Inbox and download whatever has not been previously downloaded regardless of whether it has been read or not. They cannot access nor download from any other folder on the server.
If you wanted to download emails in other fodlers, you would have to move emails into the Inbox in order to download them and this may not be very practical in your situation.
What you can do is synchronize your IMAP folders to get a copy downloaded to your IMAP mail account.
Then go into 'offline' mode to stop any further synchronizing as synchronized folders do get updated.
MozBackup tool could now be used to backup the Profile as synchronising created mbox files which contain emails.
You can also do the following to get a copy outside of the IMAP mail account:
Create the same folders in 'Local Folders'.
Then right click on email and 'copy to' and select Local Folders and the folder you require.
Putting a copy in Local Folders means these emails are also on your computer and they are not influenced by anything you do in the IMAP folders.
You would need to backup emails in these folders.

  • How to restore old emails from Outlook to Mac Mail?

I have recently configured my email account (server type POP3) on Mail. It has retrieved my emails from last few weeks. However the older emails are missing. I was using Outlook and Mozilla thunderbird as email clients on Windows computer. I do have a backup of the data from windows computer on external hard drive. Can someone explain my how to I restore those old emails to the newly configued mac Mail account?

I had about 7500 emails, and they converted OK...took awhile because each one has to be converted, but it finished fine.
Although you can export from multiple Outlook folders, Mac Mail doesn't have a very slick importer for multiple mailboxes.  So, you'll need to export the mailboxes from Outlook (which will create 25 different files, each full of email), and then import each of those into Mail. In my case, Mail created a separate folder for each exported file, but the folders all descended from the root folder (not nested), so I had to create my own nesting.  This is more a limitation of the mbox standard that Apple uses than it is a limitation of Mac Mail itself, from what I read.
    Happy new year!

  • How do I restore old emails from recovered data after hard drive crash?

Hi all - I used data rescue II to recover data from a crashed hard drive - seems to have worked pretty well, as the file structure seems to be mostly intact - now I'm trying to find the old emails and get them back in my inbox/sent mailboxes where they belong - any help is surely appreciated - thanks

    Hi Tommybanjo.
Mail stores the messages in .emlx files, but you cannot import individual messages directly, only entire mailboxes. In order to import the recovered .emlx files back into Mail, they must be organized as if they were in an .mbox mailbox, i.e. they must be in a Messages folder within an .mbox folder. You may create a folder called Recovered.mbox, then a Messages folder within this folder, then put the .emlx files within the Messages folder, then import that.
In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions. Note that Mail wants you to select the folder that contains the mailboxes to be imported (i.e. the folder where the .mbox folders to be imported reside), not the .mbox folders themselves nor the Messages folders within them.
Given the circumstances, however, there could be something wrong with one or more of the recovered messages and that might cause the import to fail. If that’s the case, you may try organizing the recovered messages in several smaller mailboxes and try to identify the messages that Mail has trouble with. Alternatively, you may try using emlx to mbox Converter or Emailchemy to convert the .emlx files to standard mbox format, then import that in Mail as Other.
