Old External drive into a 2nd internal slave?

I have a G-Tech 250GB external drive that I can not get to spin up. It gets power, as indicated by the light working, but won't spin up. I've been told this could be an issue with the power adapter not giving it ENOUGH power.
So my question is, can I remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it to my old G5 tower and use it as an internal drive? Not the main internal drive with the OS on it but a slave (i think thats what it would be) so that I can continue to use it while bypassing the adapter power issue?
If so, what is the process?

Whether the drive will work or not depends on the physical interface on the drive in the enclosure, and whether that's the same as the internal bus in your G5.
Regardless of what interface the external enclosure attaches to the host (e.g. FireWire, USB, etc.), the internal guts of the enclosure likely uses ATA or maybe SATA. The PowerMac G5 uses SATA drives, therefore you'd need to find out what kind of drive is in the enclosure before you can determine whether it will fit in the G5 or not.
If that doesn't work out, another option, of course, would be putting the drive in a different enclosure. That would at least eliminate the power supply issue, although that seems like a weak argument to me.

My Mac crashed. I got a new hard drive. I reinstalled Lightroom. Fortunately ircats are stored on an external drive. How do I import all of the old catalogues from external drive into a new LR catalogue. I have done it before. It has just been many years and I can't recall how.

If you had stored your catalog files on an external drive, then all you have to do is double-click on them to open them and use them.
Or you could move them to the internal drive and double-click on them once the move is completed.
To create a single catalog file from multiple ones, you could use File->Import from Another Catalog

  • Can I partition an external drive into MSDO and MACOS extended and use under bootcamp ?

I am interested in using Windows 8 alongside my OSX MAVERICK with the Bootcamp 5 solution.
However, I am trying to save the space on my internal SSD . Can I partition my 4TB WD external drive into 3 parts like this :
1.5 TB dedicated for Time Machine in MAC OS Extended Format
1,5 TB MAC for general purpose in MAC OS Extended Format
1.0 TB Windows for my PC games and other stuff in exFAT for files larger than 4GB
Is this possible at all or what would be better ?
    Thanks

To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Open Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.

  • Time Capsule acts weird when i plug my external drive into it

whenever i plug my toshiba canivo 1tb external drive into my time capsule it stops even letting me access the time capsule period in finder and in airport utility it keeps asking for the password even though i know its correct! works fine when drive isnt plugged in and ive been using it with the tc for a while it just started doing this tonight..any suggestions?

You must use a powered hub.. the internal power supply is not able to supply power to the USB drive.
Even if you have an external power supply on the USB drive you might still need a powered hub.. it is way under powered.

  • Old external drive; how to check for virus?

I`ve an old external drive from the time I was a Windows PC user. I just don`t want a virus on my macbook, so I want to make sure that the drive is clean, and wipe out all the deadly ****. So, what do I do? PS, I have really important stuff in there too, so I cant just reformat the drive.

Download and scan it with either Sophos or ClamXav. Not that Windows viruses can affect the Apple OS:
There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac will NOT be infected by a virus, it may have other security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.
You may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful: The User Tip seeks to offer guidance on the main security threats and how to avoid them.

  • Need easiest way to transfer my old hard drive into a new purchased one

I recently upgraded my 80GB internal HD with a 120GB. I just need to transfer everything I have onto my new one. Mac certified stores charge around 95$/hour so no way am I going to do that. However, I'm not really knowledgeable when it comes to backing up/cloning HD. My friend has a 160GB Western Digital external so I plan on using that. I downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner but got confused when it asked me what kind of drive I wanted it (ex: read only). I heard TimeMachine can copy your whole hard drive also?

    Kyle Kim wrote:

An enclosure is a box that allows a drive to communicate via the USB and/or FireWire interface. The external drive you mentioned is just an "enclosure" around a commodity hard drive. I did read that you said you had access to an external hard drive, but I just sort of buzzed it with what I remember from the top of my head. That being said, let me revise (this is how I actually did it when I installed my Hitachi Travelstar 7K200):
    1) Run Disk Utility from your current drive, and format your new external drive(GUID Partition Map).
    2) Install Carbon Copy Cloner on your current drive. Clone your current drive to the external drive.
    3) Shut down and try and boot from the external drive (hold option during power up?). Verify it can boot.
    4) Take the original drive from the MacBook and replace it with the new drive.
    5) Boot up from the external drive.
    6) Run Disk Utility and format your new internal drive in GUID Partition Map.
    7) Clone the contents of your external drive to your new internal drive, then shut down.
    8) Start up your machine and make sure it boots from your new internal drive.
    9) Wait while Spotlight reindexes the new drive. It'll be loud while the CPU heats up and the fan cranks up.
If you're using an external drive, you'll need to perform the cloning process twice.

  • Install a 1T external drive into G4

Greetings Mac family, I'm having a problem with my Seagate 1 Terabyte external drive. The firewire connection is not booting up- a new cable produced no solution. The USB mounts but is incredibly slow. Disk Warrior and Utilities says it's OK.
I'm thinking of cracking the case and installing it in the forward bay of my G4 (Tiger). The back bays have 2 drives installed. Is this a possibility of working?
    Thank you, j

Hi Joseph, I'm certain the external Drive is SATA & the internal needs ATA/IDE/PATA, there are adapters for both power & data, but they might not fit.
Does the Seagate enclosure have a one button push feature on the front of it?
Is it one of these Seagate drives...

  • HT204370 I have changed my internal hard drive on my macbook pro. I have put old hard drive into a capsule and have this plugged into my laptop. I can't find the movies on my old hard drive now? Any idea how I can move them to iTunes again? cloud taking H

I have just changed my internal Hard drive on my MacBook pro. I had recently downloaded some movies on iTunes which I want to put into my iTunes library on my new internal hard drive. I have put my old internal hard drive into an external capsule but when I open the icon of the hard drive from the desktop I can't find my movies.
At the moment I have the new movies downloading again from the cloud but it is literally taking hours for even one movie to load.
When I changed the internal hard drive I restored my info from my old external hard drive which hadn't been backed up in a month and hence does not have my latest movies...
I am concerned that I might go over my internet usage limit (flatmate is refusing to change to unlimited package!!!!) by downloading all the movies again from the cloud never mind how long it is taking...
Is there any way to restore all my info and media from the old internal Hard drive in the capsule as well as from the external hard drive?

It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.

  • How to download all songs from my external drive into my itunes library

I have enough Gbytes to not use an external drive for my music.
How do I proceed to download all songs from the external drive on my internal drive?

    Hello there, Laetidela.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great steps on how to move your iTunes library from an external hard drive to your computer:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527
    External drive
This option requires more work than Home Sharing, but it creates a backup of your iTunes library on the external drive in addition to moving your content.
    Notes before you start:
You can use most iPods as an external drive.
Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). Because of this, you can't use a Mac-formatted iPod or external drive to move your music to a Windows PC. See iPod: How to determine iPod's hard disk format if you're not sure how your iPod is formatted.
Mac OS X can read Windows-formatted iPods and drives. This means there are many ways to migrate your information from your old Windows-based PC to your new Mac.
Mac OS X: To be sure external drives appear on your desktop, choose Preferences from the Finder menu. Be sure the options for "External disks" and "Hard disks" are enabled.
Part 1: Locating and consolidating the iTunes Media folder
Part 2: Copy iTunes folder from the old computer:
Part 3: Get iTunes ready on your new computer
Part 4: Back up any music that's already on your new computer
Part 5: Copy music to your new computer
Part 6: Add preexisting music that was on the new computer back into the library
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • HELP! Import iPhoto 4 pics from external drive into iPhoto 5

I had computer issues so cleared my hard drive which was with iPhoto 4
Moved the entire iPhoto Library to my external.
When they updated my software they used the 5 version.
Now I am having issues getting iPhoto 5 to recognize my data.
I have tried various way indicated... but each one presents with a different problem.
    * If I pull them directly from the External drive to the Photo finder window - then when I open iPhoto i get the spinning wheel for HOURS (quit after 12).
    * If I drag them directly to Iphoto (either the entire folder OR year by year)
They do show up in iPhoto, however, in iPhoto ALL dates are the date I pulled the iPhoto Library onto my External drive. Also, when in iPhoto there are film roles, however, the events are mixed up.
I have tried this about 10 times, all different ways, my latest is now it imports them in DUPLICATE (and I had deleted teh thumb files prior to import)
    My question:
How do I pull my iPhoto 4 library into iPhoto 5 and KEEP proper fiilm roles to include 1) Correct pictures in each 2) correct dates and 3) preserve the role titles 4) not duplicated
    HELP!!!
    THANKS!

Here are some instructions from Apple in iPhoto Help that explain how to switch from your normal iphoto library (on your internal drive) to your older iphoto library (on your external drive:
"You can switch from the photo library you're currently working on to another one you've already created.
    1.Quit iPhoto.
2.Rename your current iPhoto Library folder in the Finder or move it to a new location on your hard disk, and then open iPhoto.
    3. Tip: If you don't want to rename or move your current iPhoto Library folder, hold down the Option key while opening iPhoto.
    4. Click Find Library.
    5. Choose the library you want to display.
    6. Click Open.
The library appears in the iPhoto viewing area."
If you succeed in doing this, you can thus direct your iphoto 5 program to open the iphoto 4 library on your external. If this succeeds, iphoto 5 will automatically convert that library to iphoto 5. Then you can burn your external drive iphoto 5 library to CD or DVD using the "burn" function from within iphoto. It is best if you can fit everything on one CD or DVD, but if not, you can burn by album, or by roll, or even by date. Make sure you burn this disk (or these disks) from within iphoto 5. Then, following the above instructions again, revert back to your internal drive iphoto 5 library. Then, while iphoto is running, insert those CDs/DVDs you burned from within iphoto earlier and when you do, each will appear inside iphoto along with your other albums. Each CD or DVD, as you insert it, will look like another album. You can then import those into your existing internal drive library. Unless you hhave many thousands of photos, this should not take a long time.
By the way, if ALL your photos are in that external drive iphoto library, you can first quit iphoto and then you can drag it over and replace your internal drive iPhoto Library with the external drive iPhoto Library. Then iPhoto 5 will convert the older library automatically when it starts up.
Before doing any of these things, I suggest backing up all your photos to something safe as if there is some corruption in your original library, it could get mangled in a way that makes it unusable and then you'll need that backup.
I have actually done what I have descriibed above. We have an older iMac G3 with iPhoto 4. We got my daughter a new iMac G5 which came with iPhoto 5. I copied over her iPhoto Library from the iMac G3 which had been running iPhoto 4, and when she started iPhoto 5 for the first time on the new iMac, it converted everything in the old iPhoto Library (created under iPhoto 4) to iPhoto 5.
You would only need the CDs/DVDs if you have two libraries you want to merge, one being an iPhoto 4 Library, and the other being an iPhoto 5 Library.
There is a guy named "Old Toad" who sometimes comments in this forum. He probably has a better way of doing this.
