Old folders showing recent modification dates

I have several folders that I +have not touched for months+, and suddenly, they all have the same modification date & time. The files inside the folders have the correct dates on them (some are two years old). What gives? The only thing I can think of is that the dates are the same as a scheduled backup I do every week, but they've only been changed on a handful of folders inside the folder that I back up. And the backing up doesn't usually change the modification dates. So I 'm stumped. And aggravated.

I have had the same thing happen to me a few times, and not sure the cause of it. I noticed it once right after I had repaired permissions on my system disk, yet the incorrect dates were on a completely different hard drive. That may have just been a coincidence.
If anyone has suggestions, please reply.

  • Un-modified folders with changed modification dates

I have several folders that I have not touched for months, and suddenly, they all have the same modification date & time. The files inside the folders have the correct dates on them (some are two years old).
This seems to be happening with only one folder, which itself is in the Documents folder. There is an alias to it on the sidebar. Inside that folder, just today, 53 folders all changed their modification dates with out me even looking at them!
This is highly annoying, as it is a folder in which I store jobs that I have completed. Any solutions?

This was the result of a syncing application, not Mac OS. Removed application, problem solved.

  • Finder shows incorrect modification date

Another horrible finder bug. It showed a wrong modification date for a pdf file that I had just changed. The date shown was 22 januari, but the correct date, which was displayed only after relauching finder, was 18 februari. The shell command "ls -al" DID show the correct date. Moving up and down the directory hierarchy did not solve the problem, only a relaunch did.
At the same time I noticed that some other files in the same directory had ridiculous modification and creation dates.  Those dates were something like 2001, 1pm, while the entire directory, including all the files in it, was created on 22 januari 2015.
This is similar to a bug I reported here last week, where Finder did not show a certain file at all. I am using a different computer now, so that many hardware related issues are ruled out.
I will file a bug report. I am spending a considerable part of my time filing Yosemite bugs.

Had the same thing on my MacBook Air with a 256gb SSD.
Finder was showing 177gb available. Disk Utility said 54gb.
I ran the Terminal command suggested by others. And a MIRACLE happened!
Now Disk Utility says I have 155gb available. But Finder reports an incredible 709gb of free space... on my 256gb drive!
It must be a blessing from Steve Jobs.

  • Opening Nested folders changes the modification date of the parent folder

This has been bugging me for some time and is very odd...
If I open a folder that is nested inside another folder it changes the modification date of the parent folder to today's date and time, even though I have not made any changes to the folders contents, or even viewed any of the contents.
I have posted this question on other forums and no one has been able to reproduce this on their systems.
I have multiple macs, using a combination of 10.4 and 10.5, connected via an AEBS and this only seems to occur when I am connected to my network.
All machines have been setup using a migration from a previous machine going way back to my original OSX installation and various iterations of Powerbooks, iBooks, iMacs, Minis, MacBooks etc...
Can anyone throw any light as to what is causing this?
    Many thanks,

    Hi Ben,
I have multiple macs, using a combination of 10.4 and 10.5, connected via an AEBS and this only seems to occur when I am connected to my network.
I'm not sure about this, but I think that when it happens that network time and date is automatically being set.

  • Old folders show up in smaller font size

I have Jaguar era (10.2) files stored in a disk image (I actually imaged the entire harddrives from the 10.2 machine).
When I mount the disk image and copy out a folder of documents onto my 10.8 machine, everything goes fine.
However when I double click on that folder the resulting window's font changes to smaller size.
What is going here?  I presume this has something to do with resource forks, but I'd like to know exactly what the system is doing with these files.
    Thanks

Welcome to Apple Support Communities, lindabodyplex!
I downloaded, installed, and verified a new font and it still doesn't show up in Word.
Sounds like you used the Font Book app, but did you install it using "Add Fonts." (See screenshot by Eric Root.) By default, Font Book will install in your user library font folder (HD/Users/your name/Library/Fonts/), which will then be available only to you and not other users of the same computer. As for it not showing in Word, all applications, especially Microsoft applications including Office Reminders should be off (quit) before installation of fonts.
    Did you reboot the computer?
You might try clearing the font cache with an app such as FontNuke.
Generally, fonts for Microsoft are located in one of two Libraries: (a) HD/Library/Fonts, or (b) HD/Library/Fonts/Microsoft/

  • Lion address book cards modification date?

Each card in the Snow Leopard address book showed a modification date; the ones in Lion don't.  Is there a way to add that back?

So far I can't find any.  I heavily use Address Book for a 400 member Mac user group and modification dates are important to me as I manage alot of member changes and do alot of importing via Address Book Importer, which doesn't automatically throw out the old vCard. I'm watching the development of a new app called Addresses in the App Store --- right now it is too new and untried for me to use it. Maybe that or another app will help us. I'm willing to pay for the old functionality of Snow Leopard's Address Book.
Lion's changes to Address Book are a big step back as far as I'm concerned.

  • Folder modification dates spontaneously changing

I discovered that a limited batch of folders on several different hard drives had all taken on the same modification date, which was several days ago. It is truly maddening because I keep the contents of may enclosing folders sorted by modification date for critical reasons, and now these spontaneously changed folders are far out of order.
To make it more maddening, I'm using a program designed to allow changing of the modification dates, which has been working fine on most of them, to change the dates to the same as the latest date of a folder's enclosed contents, but one of them keeps changing it's modification date to right now if I merely twirl down its "carrot" or viewing arrow in list view!
I've been doing this a long time and have never encountered anything quite as mysterious or frustrating. Does anybody have any idea what could have caused this?
LATE NOTE: I had downloaded and run the Onyx program to fix an issue that OpenPGP had with contextual menus not showing up. Their page recommended running the Automation pane of  Onyx as the solution. I just found out that I ran that on the same date as the folder modification date changes. Could it be the culprit, and if so, how and why?

Thanks, Eric. I still don't understand why, though, some of those folders became something I'd never seen before: folders that would change their modification date even if the "carrot" were twirled down. It's sure bizarre behavior. And in the middle of trying to solve that, suddenly my two external hard drives became inexplicably read-only. Even though the "Info" window showed that I had read/write access, above the permissions section it said the disk was read only, and even when unlocking the permissions lock, it all was greyed out.
I found a strange suggestion in this discussion group to use DiskUtility to do nothing but verify those drives. I did—and suddenly they were all correct in the permissions department. I swear. I've never seen anything remotely like any of this.
I'm ready to order a custom tinfoil hat for my Mac.

  • What would change a file modification date into the future?

Of late, I've been noticing that [apparantly random] files that have NOT be accessed are showing a modification date somewhere in the future.
I couldn't figure out why zip was adding files I hadn't touched to an archive of files changed since a certain date.  Looked in Finder, and they have dates from 1 to 20 some years into the future, in the modification column, and sometimes, no creation date.
Also, files deep in the contents of some apps are losing me as an owner, leading zip to tell me "access denied".
Any thoughts as to what's going on?  Other than the paranoid; there's some evil virus, whatever, running amok.

  • I have recently transferred data from my old Mac to my new one. The result was good, but I have 2 users now, whose data I want to merge into 1 single user, so to avoid having to switch from one user to the other to view and use certain files. How to do it

I have recently transferred data from my old Mac to my new one. The result was good, but I have 2 users now, whose data I want to merge into 1 single user, so to avoid having to switch from one user to the other to view and use certain files. How to do it?

    Here's an easy way:
Pick the user that you want to eliminate (making sure that the remaining user has administrator privileges) and move all of the data that you want to keep into the Shared folder. Reboot or log out and login to the user you want to keep. Copy all the data from the Shared folder into your account - placing it neatly in folders (Documents, Music, Movies, etc.).
Once the data is moved, log into the account you want to delete just once more to make certain that you've grabbed all the data you want to keep. Log out and log back into your admin account and go to System Preferences>Users & Groups and delete the 'old' user.
    That should do it.

  • Any idea why Mavericks is changing modification dates on my folders?

My download folder is on an external HD and for the past week or so, I noticed that Mavericks has been changing the modification dates of some folders (only folders, not files) so that older folders will come up on top when sorted by dates. It just happened a minute ago, I downloaded a file and a few second after, I heard the ticking sound of data being written on the HD. I opened the download folder and sure enough, there was five folders that were on top of the file I had downloaded. I never got this with any previous versions of OSX. This is really annoying since I usually use the modification date view to find files that I've recently dowloaded.

Same here - I've just reported that to Apple at https://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
It's fair to call it a bug I think. Opening a folder changes the modification dates of some, but not all, the folders enclosed.
Plays havoc with organising time series (backups, things one has just worked on, etc.).
There are two other discussions on this subject, but neither has received any attention, so I've responded to all three.

You do NOT have duplicates.  This is how Apple handles photos.
Just as a song is in your Itunes Library and that exact same song can be accessed from a playlist, all synced photos are in the Photo Library and those exact same photos can be accessed from the album.

  • Restore from an old iTunes backup but preserve recent app data

I may need to restore from an iTunes backup that is several months ago, and I'm trying to figure out if there's any way to preserve the newer app data that gets synced to iTunes.  Obviously it's not an issue for apps that store data in the cloud, but for my apps that store data on the device, when I sync *after* restoring from an old backup, will the more recent app data that *presumably* is on my computer in iTunes overwrite the old app data now on the phone?

    Try this:

Yes, if you restore from backup all the old dats gets erased.

  • Why does old sale order (The deliver date before current date) show VSF (independent requirement) in MD04?

    Dear All,
I face one issue, the old sales order (the delivery date before current date) has became VSF (independent requirement) in MD04, could someone let me know why and how to fix it?
Take 01.09.2014 as example, we have one 50PC's sales order with delivery date as 25.08.2014, in MD04, the system will show two independent requirements, one is 50PC's customer order and another is 50PC's VSF.
We are looking forward to your kind help and answer, thanks in advance!
    Best Regards,
    Gavin

    Hi Gavin
If I understood the issue correctly, system is showing both the sales order and the PIR on the same date, right?
If this is the case, it's probably a PIR consumption issue. Take a look on the following note, especially question 10:
