Old fonts in CC

I would like to install adobe CC on my OS10.8.5. I have over 700 fonts in my Library folder from 20 years ( truetype and postcript). Will they be accessible by the CC apps?

Thanks for replying. I have been reading a lot of info mostly from 2013 and it seems that in some cases the fonts need to be placed in the apps themselves and many old ones just do not appear in the Font Book. I have really been happy with CS6 and am nervous about going onto CC I cloud. I have many files that are older that I designed and ma worried the fonts will not open.

I used an external hard drive for my backups via Time Capsule. I bought a new computer and I want to transfer all my old fonts over to the new one but when I go into the Font Library from the hard drive backup but my downloaded fonts aren't there?

I am slowly transferring information fromt he backup to my new computer and I want to transfer over my old font book. When I go into the Font folder on the hard drive the only fonts that show up are the ones that came stock with the computer not any of the ones I have downloaded over time. Could they be downloaded somewhere else?

The answer to that would probably be "Yes." If you don't remember where your fonts were stored, you may want to search your backups for any of the font files you know the names to. See where that takes you.
Ideally, Font Book and other font managers will temporarily store the fonts you "installed" into the System when you run the OS. When you shut down, etc. they are removed and reloaded on restart. The permanent place fonts reside is where you saved them when or after you downloaded them. I typically create a Resources folder on the root level of the computer and place a Fonts folder there. Then I install fonts from there, and they are available to all users on that iMac.
Perhaps if you did not have that kind of a strategy, perhaps many of them are still in your Downloads folder?

All versions of Photoshop get their fonts from your OS. Just install any missing font wherever Windows keeps fonts.

Old fonts from System 7 & Mac OS 8 & OS 9: Safe to install in 10.6.4?

I've been accumulating fonts for years and years. I recently got a new MacBook Pro and it's now running 10.6.4.
I still have, backed up on an external drive, hundreds of freeware, shareware and pro-level fonts which I acquired way back in the distant past, some as early as System 7 -- the "Date created" column says they're dated starting 1992 and every year up through 2004. (There's also about 15 System 6-era fonts in there too going back to 1989, but I think I'm just going to trash those.)
My question: Is it "safe" to install these fonts on my 10.6.4 machine? Or could the ancient fonts cause some kind of operating system meltdown or panic or whatever?
Perhaps the OS 8 & OS 9 fonts are safe, but not the System 6 and System 7 fonts?
Or all they all safe?
And even if they are safe to install: Will they work?
Lastly: What's the best way to install them? I see a new feature in OSX which I had never noticed until now is that if one double-clicks the font icon, a "Font Book" window pops up with an optional "Install Font" button at the lower right. By clicking that button, does Font Book physically move the font file to the proper place in the OSX system? Or...?
Any advice or insight into this problem would be most appreciated. I want to have access to all my old fonts (I still have many documents which make use of them) but I don't want to mess up my fresh new 10.6.4 system. Thanks.

Anything from System 8 forward will work. System 6 used bitmapped fonts. These are not supported in OS X. System 7 and 7.5 though were a mix. There were both TrueType and bitmapped fonts. Only the TrueType fonts can be used.

fonts are handled by your operating system. This has nothing to do with Adobe. You simply copy over the font files.

If the fonts are installed on the OS they should be there already. If they were only available to CS5 they are probably in the fonts folder in the Adobe section of the Common files (location will be OS dependent), or they may be in ID's own fonts folder.

Can't import old fonts

I just got a new Intel iMac and had several fonts from a previous mac. They are in Font Suitcase form. For some reason, Font Book on my new iMac will not import them. They are not corrupt as they are still fine on my Powerbook. Do the new iMacs only read TrueType fonts or is there a way to use my old fonts?

Font Book's Help gives these instructions for installing fonts. Is this what you are doing?

When you get new fonts, you can install them using Font Book. When a font is added in Font Book, it automatically appears in the available font lists in your applications and in the Font panel.

Reinstalled OSX 10.4.11 wont see old fonts

Reinstalled my system for various issues. Had logos created in PS CS and saved as .psd files leaving type on live layers. The fonts used are now not recognized by the system. I have the old fonts on an old G4 using OS9 that still work there, but when I try to copy them back to the newly installed OS on the G5 the G5 OS won't see them. Why?

I Found the culprit in Helvetica Fractions, a font I installed in my system that, I think overrode the ID.# of Helvetica and became the default font for Mail. What took me so long was finding preferences, which was, as far as I'm concerned, hidden in the upper right corner of the accounts page. Anyway, thanks for the help.
By the way, I tried to turn off email notifications, but they keep coming.

New machine, can't add old fonts

I just upgraded my comp at work from a G4 to a power mac. When I try to copy over all of my old fonts, many won't allow me to add to font book, linotype font explorer or suitcase. Some fonts work, some won't that used to on my last computer. Fonts like MrsEaves, Univers, Orator and many, many more. Any idea why they worked on my last machine and not the new one? Is there anything I can do? Is font book the best program to use?

Examples of old fonts that could cause AI CS3 to get unstable?

I keep hearing this idea that old fonts can make AI unstable.
It is an interesting theory, and one which could explain various things I've seen, but it is so vague that I don't know what to think about it.
What are some examples of actual old fonts that would be real demonstrations of this idea? Are they all PostScript Type 1 faces? All released by Adobe prior to 1990? Any info at all?
I would nominate the original MyriadMM typeface. I don't have it installed anymore, but someone might. But this is too obvious of a "is not supported on a modern Mac" case. I'm thinking if this theory is real, the example will be something like the original AvantGarde version 1 PS face from 1987 (or whenever).

Any old fonts can make any modern application unstable, particularly Adobe apps.
Fonts have updates too as have applications. Fonts were not coded in the same way years ago as they are today and there were restrictions as to how many fonts could be in a font suitcase and how many characters could be in a font itself. There were also restrictions on system and operating system level that made that neccessary then.
A lot have changed over the years and font technologies have evolved a lot and changed too.
You mention a MM font (Multiple Master). MM fonts are no longer supported on systemlevel and/or in applications even though old documents that use them can show them even though the specific features that an MM font contains are no longer supported or can no longer be used (had to do with sclability and swashes).
Fonts that have been around for a long time also tend to have been moved in parts between both users and font suitcases, sometimes not even living in the originally named suitcase (to get around restrictions of number of installed and active suitcases at the time) and might also have lost its postscript parts.
It doesnt't matter if we are talking about type 1 or 3 or bitmap fonts, or truetypes or commerical ones or free ones. If the fonts are old, they can misbehave for many reasons. If an installed font has been through numerous crashes (applications, system, documents etc) also the font can have got hit and got damaged. That's why you need to check the health of your fonts regularly, and hve your original fonts safely on a disk or backup so you can reinstall it if it starts to misbehave.
Nowadays you can check fonts for damage with FontBook that comes with the system, or with one of the font managers.
Then there are the badly created fonts that pop up now and then too and therefore create problems. But that is another story.

Old Fonts in 10.4.8

I have recently upgraded to a MacBook Pro from a 12" Al PowerBook and am having font trouble. The font in question is one I bought years ago in the Apple Font Pack called Garamond Narrow. It worked fine in Tiger on the PowerBook but now the italic and bold italic styles get substituted in my applications.
When I run FontBook.app and validate the font styles they pass all the tests except "System Validation". When I install the font on a PowerBook with 10.4.8 and validate the font it passes all tests and validates fine.
I really need this font professionally as I use it in all of my Keynote presentations as well as my correspondence (most of it in Pages).

Old Font Files in Leopard showing up as Unix Executable File

Is there any way I can make the computer be able to use and open the font files that now are being seen as Unix Executable Files even though they worked just fine as fonts before I upgraded to 10.5. I've tried putting new file extensions on them, or telling them to be opened with font book. I'm not sure what else to do, we have hundreds if not thousands of fonts that we need and that our customers need us to be able to use.

I've installed reset permissions, reset LaunchServices using OnyX, rebooted, and files are still "unix executable" to start with. I then used FileUtils app to "Clear Executible Status," which makes them open in txt editor, and say they are 0kb in size. I then renamed the extentions, playing around with a bunch of different types, and no luck at all with any of them.
Here is a screen shot (http://180bydesign.com/uploads/Picture5.png) of my folder (at top) with a list of fonts, and fontbook.app (at bottom) when I try to add a font from that location. No luck.
PS - here's something weird... I had a friend w/ Tiger send me a font suitcase which he zipped, and it did same thing, but then he zipped it twice (wierd, I know) and it worked! I unzipped the first one, then unzipped the second file within that first one, and WALLA, the suitcase actually looked and acted like a font. This doesn't help at all with all the other saved files, but it certainly helps. I might open a pc & try to double zip all the old ones & see if that does the trick.

What happened to my old font on my new iMAC?

Recently got a new iMAC to replace a 6 year old iMAC. I installed the same Adobe CS2 software on both computers.
However, some fonts - Papyrus - for example, that I frequently used on the old iMAC, are missing when I try to view or

I installed the same Adobe CS2 software on both computers.
However, some fonts - Papyrus - for example, that I frequently used on the old iMAC, are missing when I try to view or use them on the new iMAC.
Are you sure those fonts came with the Adobe software?
How, if possible, can I get the missing fonts to work on the new iMAC?
Is it impossible to select the fonts on the old one and copy them to the same location(s) on the new one?
Hopefully, this (counter) question holds the answer.

Old fonts not recognized under Leopard

I have a number of old T1 and Mac TrueType fonts that aren't recognized under Leopard. They worked fine under OS X through 10.4, but now are either showing up as type "Unix Executable File" with a generic black executable icon, or as a plain white icon with the type "Document". The files sizes appear to be correct, i.e. the issue is not zero length files. Since the OS doesn't present these files as fonts, font editors don't recognize the files as something they can open, either.
Anyone else running into this problem? Anyone have any suggestions?

I've seen that thread, and in the end it seems to boil down to being careful when transferring files over a network. That didn't happen to my files, they never moved, and they worked under 10.4 and don't under 10.5.
I have noticed something new, though: the fonts that don't work show a greater-than-zero size in the Finder, but a zero file size when listed under the Terminal, i.e. the command line utility 'ls' shows these files as having a zero length, but the Finder shows the correct size.
So, it looks like a resource-fork-related issue, but it's not a case of a missing resource fork. The Finder sees the correct file size, but no longer recognizes or identifies the files correctly. Weird.
Any suggestions?
