Old hard drive, new Mac Pro?

My G5 power supply died so I bought a new Mac Pro. Can I install the old G5 hard drive into my new mac pro and boot up??
Thanks, beth

If you have a G5 that uses SATA drive then you can install it however you will not be able to boot from it. If you have a PATA drive then you can always install it in the 2nd optical drive bay but you need tohe right brackets to have it secure.

  • Disappearing Hard Drive, new Mac Pro

I have a brand new Mac Pro with 5 hard drives installed.  My "MacHD" home drive is a 1TB that came with the computer and I installed 4 more Samsung 2TB drives into the available bays plus rigged up a bay in one of the CD trays areas.  These drives are named "Drive 1/2/3/4"
Yesterday I hooked up a Lacie Minimus 2TB external to my computer for the first time and went through the setup and formatting process to make it one large drive on the mac.  Then I named the drive "Portable 2TB" and copied over one large folder (1.15 TB) from "Drive 1" on my computer to the "Portable 2TB" Lacie drive that I just hooked up.  It took 4 hours and then I shut down my computer for the night and everything seemed OK.
This morning when I turn on my computer, my Samsung "Drive 4" internal drive somehow thinks that it's the Lacie "Portable 2TB" drive.  ALL THE INFO THAT WAS ON "DRIVE 4" is gone and it's just that 1 large folder that I copied over to the external drive yesterday.  What was yesterday called "Drive 4" on my desktop is now named "Portable 2TB" and there is even a Lacie logo!  I go into disk utility and it still says it's a Samsung drive.
My question is:  what is going on here?  Is it possible that the Lacie setup process I went through yesterday formatted the wrong drive on my computer?  Did it reformat "Drive 4" instead the Lacie external like it was supposed to?
Another clue: when I attached the external again this morning it made me go through the formatting process again, as if I had never formatted it yesterday and never copied that huge folder over to it...

In that case, your question should be addressed to LaCie tech support. I have no idea what their software does. Apparently what it does isn't very desirable.

  • Cant install mountain lion on a new hard drive 2011 mac pro 17"

2.- I tried to use the old hard drive that i put on a external hard drive reader so I could get the recovery partition but i just keep restarting the installation no reason given
3.- downloaded the mountain lion and tried to installing it on the system hard drive of the laptop trough a computer running snow leopard but dosn't let me.
4.- tried the same thing on target mode without success
5.- using the recovery partition I used disk utility to se of the partition was locked but it was not
6.- created a different partition to see if it would install it  there didn't work.
    i just don't understand why

Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer
After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
       2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
Use DiskMaker X to put your installer clone onto the USB flash drive.
Make your own Mavericks flash drive installer using the Mavericks tool:
You can also create a Mavericks flash drive installer via the Terminal. Mavericks has its own built-in installer maker you use via the Terminal:
You will need a freshly partitioned and formatted USB flash drive with at least 8GBs. Leave the name of the flash drive at the system default, "Untitled." Do not change this name. Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. Copy this entire command line after the prompt in the Terminal's window:
         sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume
         /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed to the screen so be careful to enter it correctly. Press RETURN, again.
Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time.

  • Adding new hard drive to Mac Pro (quad core)

I've just ordered a new Mac Pro quad core (2.66 GHz) with one GB HD. Since Apple is charging £240 for a second drive I decided to get it from somewhere else. I found a 1GB Western Digital Caviar Green but I also noticed 1GB WD Caviar Black. I wonder if anybody has any experience of those drives and would they work with the latest Mac Pro ?
Does anybody knows what make of drive is Apple using in their latest Mac Pros ?

  • Migrate old G4 to new Mac Pro

I'm helping a customer set up a new Mac Pro. They have an old G4 and would like to migrate Photoshop and Illustrator files to the new system.
I'm aware of the Firewire cable + Target Disk mode, and I know it could be done over ethernet as well.
I'm wondering about simply opening up the G4, taking the hard disk out and putting in an empty bay on the Mac Pro. Obviously we wouldn't try to boot from it (it has Tiger) but my question is simply one of drive compatibility. Would the new Mac Pro be able to use the HDD from the old G4?
Just looking for painless, easy and cheap. I have replaced HDD many times so that's not an issue, I just don't know if it will work.
Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

"...my question is simply one of drive compatibility. Would the new Mac Pro be able to use the HDD from the old G4?..."
No. Not cleanly at all. The Mac Pro's use SATA drives while the G4 would have IDE drives. They are different interfaces. You could potentially get an adapter, something like this to get your connections worked out. However, this issue is still going to be where to physically put the G4's drive inside the Mac Pro. An SATA drive would fit into a bracket, and simply slide right into all the appropriate connections (Power & Data).
But the adapter card you'd have to install to make the IDE drive work, will also prevent it from working as well. Hope that makes sense.
An alternative may be to buy an external Firewire enclosure, ready for an IDE (or "ATA") drive and put the old G4 drive there. Simple and clean - guaranteed to work.
An internal solution does not seem possible to me.

  • Old hardrive in new Mac pro

I bought a second internal hardrive for my old 1.6 G5. I bought it from an apple reseller so assume it is the standard type. Can I install this in my new Mac pro 2.88 (when it arrives)?
Also, I want to use this hardrive with logic and some third party plugins. What is the best way to configure this. Applications on main hardrive, all audio files and samples, sample libraries (including those for logic) on the second Hardrive? Any advice on utilising my hardrives for music produciton would be great
    Cheers

You have four drive bays. Spread everything out. Your old hard drive is likely a couple years old. I would reformat it (which you need to do anyway to GUID partition table format for INTEL Macs) and use it for an emergency backup clone of your system and put it someplace safe. Off line, maybe in FireWire/SATA case.
I'd look into 3 x 500GB drives from WD. 750GB if you want even better performance.
Don't use Migration Assistant for any PPC applications, just for preferences, settings and data.
Music and audio benefit nicely from 4 drives.

  • Swap Hard Drives Between Mac Pro's

I have a MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.53 15" (Unibody - Late 2008) that has been upgraded from the standard 320 GB SATA hard drive, to a Seagate 750 GB SATA 16 MB cache 7200 rpm hard drive.
I have recently upgraded to a MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.66 15" (SD - Mid 2009) that has the standard 320 GB SATA hard drive.
Both are running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I will be selling my older (2.53GHz) Mac Pro but would like to keep my larger hard drive.
    Question
Can I simply swap the hard drive out of my older (2.53GHz) Mac Pro and install it into the newer (2.66GHz) Mac Pro, without having to reinstall the Mac OS X software?
I no longer have any of my OS X install disks.
Will the 750 GB hard drive still perform the same in the newer Mac Pro, given that they are running the same OS?
    Thanks in advance!

From what I understand the USB/PCIe interfaces are (somewhat) device specific. But it depends on the particular vendor in question.
According to barefeats.com, regarding USB devices:
"...Our only concern was that it {the CalDigit adapter} only worked with CalDigit USB 3.0 enclosures like the AV Drive. They since updated the driver to "unlock it." In fact, all the USB 3.0 results posted above for non-Cadigit enclosures were done with the CalDigit PCIe USB 3.0 host adapter...."
So, for example, the Lacie PCIe adapters are "specific". Only works with their stuff. Originally the CalDigit PCIe adapter was the same: limited to use with their devices only. But they've altered that so that it is more generic. In fact, it was used to test the other USB 3.0 devices in the barefeats tests.
So the CalDigit card, at least, is a more flexible choice.

  • Can I format an IDE Hard Drive from Mac Pro?

    I use a mid - 2012 Mac Pro; run Mavericks OS X 10.9.2.
    1. Can an IDE hard drive (using an external drive) be formatted to 10.9.2, from my Mac Pro using Mavericks? (the IDE hard drive is new/unformatted).
    2. Once formatted to 10.9.2, can I reformat the IDE hard drive to Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8, from my Mac Pro using Mavericks?
    3. If so, would should I do to accomplish Question # 2 above?

The version of the OS that is running  is not relevant to formatting the drive. When you format a drive in any OS, you should select "Mac OS extended journaled." (That is, unless you plan to share the drive with a Windows computer.) Formatted this way, the drive can be used with any version of Mac OS.
You do not have to reformat the drive each time you connect it with a different OS.

  • How to install hard drive into mac pro

how to install hard drive into mac pro

I recently bought a new 2TB internal sata drive for my Macpro.
The installation was easy, but I'm not sure what to do next.
For one, should I partition the drive?
My purpose for buying the drive was to use it as my go to drive for Parallels. I used to run my music studio on Windows based machines, and my older project files require a windows OS to recover. I installed Parallels so I can have my studio running Mac and Windows programs which will enable me to access my old project files and take them into my newer Protools system.
So now, I've installed my new hard drive, but I'm not sure if I should partition it....And!? I'm not sure how to designate that drive for my virtual pc on Parallels. I was able to allocate enough disk space to parallels in order to load my music software, but at this point, I'm not sure if I've just promised it disk space from my original partitioned drive (which only has about 350 GB left on it).
I would love to be able to make one internal drive available for Parallels, and the other available for the rest of my OSX. When I use Parallels, I still would like to save some extra information on the 2TB drive as well from my dekstop running OSX.
I hope this makes sense! Your help is much appreciated!

  • Beeping, Squeaking, or Chirping,  Hard Drive or Mac Pro

My Mac Pro has the stock Seagate 160GB HDD and it has always beeped, mostly on bootup, about a dozen times (you could even call it a loud chirp or squeak) and once in a while during normal use. It's worse when the machine is cold, as a re-boot of a warm machine seldom causes the beeps, or at least not as many.
I'm starting this post, as the original was entitled:
MacPro 3GHZ BEEPS but it seems to happen on any speed Mac Pro not just the 3GHZ, and it also 'seems' to be caused by the HDD???
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=663981&tstart=15
My Mac only beeps when booting from the factory Seagate drive, and not either of my other self installed Seagate drives; one a Carbon Copy clone, and the other a Windows XP drive.
Just wondering how many people have experienced this, and if replacing the drive cured it.
Mac Pro, and MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Win XP on second HDD

If you do a Find/Search on this page for 'Chirp' there is a case where the user pulled the factory drive and the Chirp disappeared.
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/macpro/topic4396.html
Same thing happens for me when I pull the factory drive.
    Here is some of the text;
    MacInTouch Reader
On Oct 24, I reported that my new Mac Pro (2.66MHz, 2GB RAM (Apple OEM), 2xSuperDrive, 160GB HD, ATI X1900, BT + AP) made a random "chirping" noise.
On Nov 1, I reported that removing the OEM Seagate 7200.9 160 GB drive made the "chirp" to go away.
Recently, I installed the pulled drive into my PowerMac G5, and guess what? The drive chirps. So, it is most definitely the drive, not the power supply as was suggested.

  • New hard drive in Mac Pro showing 0 bytes after partitioning

I bought a Western Digital Caviar 2TB internal hard drive for my Mac Pro (2 x 2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon (late 2006), 12GB RAM, Mac OS 10.6.8). It already has two 500GB internal drives in two of the four slots.
I slotted the new WD hard drive in and started up the Mac, getting an alert saying there was an unrecognisable disk and did I want to initialise it? Yes, so it opened up Disk Utility.
This showed my two 500GB drives plus the new WD drive at 2TB. To initialise it I erased the disk which failed with an error ("POSIX reports: The operation
    couldn't be completed. Input/output error").
I next decided to use Partition instead, choosing just one partition of 2TB, Mac OS Extended (Journaled). After 7 minutes it said the process had been completed and the volume was mounted, though it didn't appear on my desktop, just in Disk Utility. I thought a restart would refresh and show it on the desktop.
Once the Mac was up and running again there was nothing there at all - and now it wasn't even listed in Disk Utility. I shut down, took the hard drive out,
looked at it, scratched my head, replaced it, and turned the Mac back on.
Once again I got an alert telling me the disk was uninitialised and would I like to format it, so clicked OK and Disk Utility opened. This time the disk was
there (WDC WD20EZRX-00DC0B0) but no volume. The info said the drive had a size of 0 Bytes and I could not erase or partition as all buttons were greyed out,
with the Partition tab saying 'this disk is too small to contain partitions'.
So what can I do now? According to macupgrades.co.uk this drive should work in my model of Mac (they recommend and sell it, though I purchased it from NORDPC via Amazon as it was a little cheaper).
    http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/product_info.php?products_id=532
I tried, with the help of my more computer-literate brother, to erase the disk from the command line via the Terminal, getting a result of "Error: 6: POSIX
reports: Device not configured". (Actually we first tried to reformat it, with an error of "does not appear to have a valid file system format").
Does anyone with more knowledge of such things have any ideas or advice? It would be much appreciated.

Unless the drive and sled are not inserted properly - unlikely - or that other drives don't work in that slot - watch out if true, unlikely but loose SATA cable - it IS a bad drive.
If you don't have a PC, setup Windows VM and use WD Lifeguard which is excellent and tests for things like bad SATA cable communicating.
You could also - I always use Partition tab btw - go in there and set it to exFAT and Windows Master Boot Record. All you want is a good drive. This one is not.
GUID tests first and last 10,000 sectors or more to insure that the partition tables and hidden areas work (they are not it is failing). Use to be that a "backup volume information block" was treated as optional if any sectors failed, now it is not.

  • Installing new hard drive in Mac Pro - question about compatibility.

I'm looking to install an extra internal hard drive in my 2009 Mac Pro, but I need to know if there are any compatibility issues with newer hard drives. I am looking at the Western Digital WD1002FAEX Caviar Black:

Would anyone be able to tell me if this is likely to be compatible with my 2009 8 core Mac Pro? Or if there is anything I should be looking out for in particular? I know pre-installed hard drives are 3GB/s and the above hard drive is 6GB/s, does this matter?

  • How to Install New Internal Hard Drive on Mac Pro Laptop

My wifes 15 in Mid 2010 lap top running 10.8.4 has run out of drive space so we bought a new 1tb drive to install. We aren't sure where to go from here. The current contents are back up on Time Machine, but we also bought a small hard drive enclosure to take out the current hard drive and put it in the small enclosure.
So...do we install the new 1tb drive into the laptop and then try and start from the original hard drive that is now in an enclousure...then "Copy" or "Migrate" the material from the original hard drive to the new on? If so...how is that done?
Or do we try and "Copy" or "Migrate" the hard drive materials backed up on Time Machine? If so...how do we do that?
    Thank you!

After formatting the new hdd, while still outside the mac, make a clone of your internal disk with CarbonCopyCloner on the new (still external) disk: CCC will ask you to install the Recovery Partition also, do that, and then the clone.
Then you eject the new drive, shutdown, and then you open the mac take the original disk out, and put the new one in.
On the OWC and other sites you will find instructions how to do the switch. Be very careful with the connectors inside .

  • New external hard drive for Mac Pro &  FCE

I wasn't sure where to post this question, but as most of my Mac work is using FCE I thought this would be the best place to ask.
My Western Digital 1TB Studio External Drive keeps going into sleep mode and I'm concerned it may go to sleep soon and not come back to life again. I'm looking for a similar hard drive with Firewire 800 on it.
Apple store recommended Lacie D2 hard drive which I have previously heard bad reviews about their reliability and customer service. I have over the years on my PC used Maxtor or Western Digital, however this is my second WD Studio drive in last 6 months that has gone into deep sleep mode.
Any recommendations of a good, reliable with decent manufacturer support if needed?
    Thanks in advance.
    Matt

Stay away from general purpose backup drives. They are not designed to deal with the demands of video.
If you want a dedicated A/V enclosure that comes supplied high performance drives, Caldigit is seriously recommended. If you are looking for bare firewire enclosures where you can add quality drives, Granite Digital and OWC are good sources. The WD Caviar Black drives as well as the Seagate series Martin recommended are good choices to fill the enclosure.
fwiw - LaCie makes a LOT of drives and a certain percentage are bound to fail fairly quickly. Still, the main problem with them is you have no idea what physical drive mechanism is inside. Some are ok, some are junk.

  • Upgrading Hard Drive on Mac Pro

My Mac Pro's (using OSX 10.5.7) hard drive (750GB) is almost out of space so I bought a new seagate 1.5 TB SATA drive (3.5inch) and I want to install it, and my computer backs up using time machine to an external drive.
What is the best way to install and have the new drive be the boot drive with all the applications and files on the new drive? Should I just install the new drive, partition it, and use time machine reinstall everything on the new drive, and format the old one and use it to store other things?
    Thanks for your help.

Why go for all in one on one drive?
I'd have opted for 640GB boot drive, then use the 750GB for something like media files of all kinds.
What do you plan to use the 750GB?
All I have needed for boot drive is anything from 74GB (even less) for the OS and applications. Then everything else, including /Users/home_account is on another drive setup.
Disk Utility Restore; CCC; SuperDuper are the three most popular programs to clone - or just restore to the Seagate from TimeMachine.
