Old host-based printer can be networked using Airport Express

Was thrilled to find out that my old HP printer works (uh, at least it DID work) as a wireless network printer because of Airport Express! (THAT's why I paid more for a router with a printer port.)
According to HP, my old HP LaserJet 1020 printer is host-based and therefore supposedly NOT network-compatible. (True, a host-based printer CAN be shared among computers on a network as long as the printer is connected to the powered-on main computer, but I wanted more than that.) BTW, the HP 1020 shares drivers with the network-compatible 1022.
But AX doesn't care whether a printer is host-based. Took several steps (including Bonjour) to get it to work, and I've printed wirelessly from both my PCs with the HP LaserJet 1020 plugged into the AX USB port.
First I installed the HP drivers (1020/1022 plug and play, from the HP website) and set up and printed from computer 1. Late at night, maybe I did this through Bonjour, but I think instead I was able to just find it through Windows > Add a printer). It defaulted to an HP 1020.
Next I installed the HP drivers and set up and printed from computer 2. Bonjour didn't find the printer, so I did a manual setup through Airport Utility, choosing TCP/IP and entering the IP address of the AX (10.0.1.1). I chose to set it up as an HP 1022, based on my limited understanding that some folks report better results that way.
When I went back to print from computer 1, I printed a file successfully. However, even later that night (yawn), when I tried to print a second file from computer 1, the print job would show up in the queue as "printing" but would then revert to error.
Any settings advice out there? I've read that the 1020 has been known to crash the print spooler, so I may re-install on computer 1 as if it's a 1022. Should I change the spooler settings? Shouldn't need to "share" the printer through Windows, right? Do I need to add _1 to the printer's IP address on the second computer? At least it worked ONCE, so I'm confident this can be set up to work reliably.

Just wanted to provide my happy update. For whatever reason, all I had to do was redo the printer setup on computer 1, and all I needed was Windows Add a Printer, now tha I know what steps to take. I'm printing wirelessly to it through my network, yay!
So if you have a host-based printer (which HP support website says is not network compatible), you can still use it as a network printer, thanks to Airport Express! No need to plug the printer into a computer and use Windows Printer Share.

You might be able to get the iPad to print to the HP by installing an App like Print Central on the iPad.
There are no guarantees that this will work, so worst case you will be out about $10 U.S.

Because your printer has to be Airprint compatible and connected to WiFi. There are applications, such as Printopia, that will allow you to print through your computer.

Why can't I print from my iPad using airport express?

Is the printer connected to the USB port on the AirPort Express?
If yes, Apple does not support printing from the iPad in this manner. Try another App like Printopia which should allow the iPad to print. There is a free trial, so you will know in a few minutes whether this will work.
Printopia - AirPrint to Any Printer - Print from iPad - Print from iPhone ...
Is the printer connected to the AirPort Express using wireless only?
If yes, you must have an AirPrint compatible printer to be able to print directly from the iPad. See if your model is AirPrint compatible in this Apple document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356
If your printer model appears, the printer may need a firmware update to enable the AirPrint feature. Contact the support folks at your printer manufacturer.
If the printer does not appear, try Printopia as above.

  • How do I extend an existing wireless network using airport express?

    Hi all,
I am trying to extend existing wireless network using airport express, my main router is Belkin

Unfortunately, Apple's "extend" feature is designed to only work with other Apple routers if you are trying to "extend" using wireless only.
It is extremely unlikely that this feature would work with a router from another manufacturer using wireless only.

  • I used Airport Base station and I was able to extend my network using airport express and connect my printers.  Now I am using Extreme and I can't extend the network (Express) or the printers nothing shows up.  I am using utility 6.3 and Mt Lion  What is

I had an Aiport Base Station and extended using Airport Express, where I also connected my printers (network). Now using Airport Extreme off Mt Lion 10.8.4 and Utility 6.3.
I can't extend the network (express) or connect my printers (USB) nor will it find my one wifi printer.
    What's up?

For now, leave the AirPort Express powered off.
Power off the entire network....all devices.....in any order that you want
    Wait a few minutes
Power up the modem first, and let it run 2-3 minutes by itself
Power up the AirPort Extreme next, and let it run a full minute
Keep powering up devices one at a time about a minute apart until everything is powered up (leave the Express off for now)
Open AirPort Utility and check to see if the AirPort Extreme is visible.
If it's not, click the AirPort Utility menu at the upper left of the screen, then click About AirPort Utility. Post back with the version number of AirPort Utility that you see there....which should be AirPort Utility 5.6.1.
    Post back on your progress.

  • How can I extend my wireless network using Airport Express and an Airport Extreme on BT Infinity?

I have BT Infinity and I am using the Time Capsule with Airport Extreme as my router. Working well (even on wireless). I want to extend the wireless network with an Airport Express, but I cannot work out the settings necessary in Airport Utility. I am using Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on a Mac Pro. Please help!

    BT,
I've read several of your posts, thanks for taking the time to share your wealth of knowledge.
I'm in a situation similar to the one described by 'scoutusmaximus'.  Seeking the flexibility of a standalone router, I finally upgraded my 4-yr old ATT DSL gateway (modem+router) to a Comcast standalone modem + the ASUS RT-AC66U: http://www.asus.com/Networks/Wireless_Routers/RTAC66U/
Typically, I stick with all things Apple but the ASUS router seemed fairly superior to the current-gen base station (on paper, anyway; time will tell when it comes to performance) so, for once, I jumped ship.  My plan was to extend the ASUS wired/wireless network using my TimeCapsule and 2 Airport Expresses in bridge mode, however, a google search turned up several unhappy customers that claim those devices don't play well with non-Apple routers, especially when it comes to 'extending' a network.
    Questions:
    1. Can I successfully extend the wired/wireless network created by the ASUS router using the 3 airport devices listed above w/out negatively impacting performance?  I'd rather have 1 wireless network as opposed to creating a new wireless network with the TC and then extending it with the AP Expresses... though I'd consider that option down the line if it came to that.
    2. Will the LAN ports on the TimeCapsule remain functional?
Btw, my house is wired so, I can reach all 3 devices via ethernet cable coming off of a central, managed switch.  Supposedly, you only lose the LAN ports on the TC if you extend wirelessly.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

  • I cannot print from my iPad using airport express. My printer is not AirPrint compatible but is connected to airport express thru USB port. My laptop can print with no problem thru the express unit. My lap top is no a mac.

Good day, my iPad does not seem to pick up my printer. My printer is not AirPrint compatible but is connected to my airport express thru the USB port. My laptop which is windows type connects to the printer via airport express thru bonjour and this work well. My iPad does not pick up my printer thru the airport express. I have read about different software that you can download but this seems to be only if you are using a mac. I know my express is working fine as I can use airplay thru my iPad. Any ideas? I do not want to go to the expense of changing my printer, when there was no mention in the express details that your printer had to be AirPrint compatible or indeed wireless.

  • Can I connect my MacBook Pro to an existing network using Airport Express?

I live on a sailboat that is about 225 feet from the marina's network antenna. I receive a strong signal on my boat but can only occasionally connect from my cabin and even then, the connection is very slow (I am pretty certain that my MacBook Pro just does not have enough signal power to get back to the network antennae). If I move 50 feet closer the connection works well. I tried to configure a range extender but nobody has any technical information on the marina's network. Does anybody know of a way to for my AirPort Express (or any other product with greater range) to connect to their network and then by cable (or wireless) to my MacBook?

DeltaDawg, Welcome to the discussion area!
There was a similar question but using an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). Unfortunately the answer is the same.
No, that is not possible. The Ethernet port on the AirPort Express (AX) is ONLY active when the AX uses WDS to wirelessly join a network. Unfortunately very few (less than 7) 3rd party devices support Apple's WDS. Also this requires configuration changes at the base station creating the network and the AX.

  • Help - Receive message "an error occurred printing this document" when using airport express and Ipad

Hi, I am trying to set up an airport express hub to work with a Star tsp100 receipt printer and IPad 2. The IPad is being used to accept credit card payments and I was hoping to print receipts out wirelessly using the airport express and receipt printer. I checked to make sure the airport express has the latest firmware and it does. The IPad software is also updated to the latest 7.1.  I then connected the Airport express and IPad and the network setup with no problems. I connected the receipt printer to the airport express using the USB slot available. While the printer comes up as available, when I attempt to print something, I get the error message "An error occurred printing this document" and I can cancel or Try again. No matter how many times I try, I continue to get this message and I lost as to the cause. When I disconnect and reconnect, another instance of the printer appears, but receive the same cryptic error message when I try to print. Totally lost, please help

    Hi kelston3,
In order to print from an iPad you will need to use a printer that is compatible with AirPrint, which is described in the following article -
    About AirPrint
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356
AirPrint printers must be wireless on your network - not connected via USB to the base station. There is a list of printers that are known to be compatible with AirPrint in the article.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Help with extending a network using AirPort Express

I am UK based and have BT Infinity Internet connection. I have a BT NTE which provides an ethernet connection for my home network. I have an AirPort Express 2nd Gen setup to provide initial router etc with the local LAN port connected to a 24 port gigabit switch. I have structured cabling providing ethernet ports in each room.
PC's etc are configured as fixed IP in the rooms they are in and connect via ethernet, however, my wifi (because of the construction of the house) is very poor especially upstairs and at the back of the house.
I have setup a second AirPort Express at the back of the house connected via the ethernet port, assigned a static IP, configured bridge mode, and setup Extended Network. However, my internal network is now very flacky, wifi keeps dropping out, Internet access for all devices is up and down, in short, it's unusable. However, If I use the second AirPort Express in Join a Network mode it appears to be more stable!
So Q1 - What is the difference between Extend a Network (via ethernet) and Join a Network (via ethernet) and what are the benefits of both? (which one should I be using?)
and Q2 - assuming Q1 is Extend a Network is the correct way to go, can someone please explain in complete detail the exact process and configuration for this to work effectively? If I can extend correctly I am looking at adding a third AirPort Express in the garage so I have wifi access in the garden and in the garage.
    Many thanks for all assistance

  • Connect to Existing Wireless Network Using Airport Express?

I would like to use my airport express to connect to an existing wireless network set up in my apartment. The wireless router (linksys) is set up in my roommate's room to his desktop. I have a printer in my room and would like to use the airport express to connect to this existing network so that my roommates and i can print wirelessly. I need to keep the printer in my room.
Is there a way to do this? Please advise.
    Thanks.

Is the LinkSys a WRT54G? If so, you have two options. If not, only the first option below is available to you:
    1. You can configure the Express to connect as a wireless client. You won't be able to connect wirelessly directly to the Express in this mode; you have to connect through the router.
    2. With the proper firmware in the WRT54G, you can set up a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). In this configuration, not only can the Express be used for printing and AirTunes, but it will also extend the range of your wireless network.

  • Cannot extend my network using AirPort Express

I just purchased a Time Capsule (2TB) and replaced my Airport Express WiFi.  My intention was to expand my network, using the AirPort Express to expand the Time Capsule signal.  I have tried several times and cannot get it to work.
Using AirPort Utility, I set up the Time Capsule successfully, making certain the "Allow the network to be expanded" box was checked off.
After resetting my AE, I plugged it in, it was detected by AirPort Utility, and I set the AE to expand the network, using the same network name, security, and password.  When I save the settings and update, the AirPort Uitility returns an error stating that the AE unit could not be located.  AE unit is flashing amber (slowly).
What DID work was connecting the AE to the Time Capsule with an ethernet cable, but this is not ideal, since I want to locate the AE away from the TC and wish to do it wirelessly.
Can someone offer some helpful suggestions that will work?
(Running MacBook Pro w/ OS X 10.7.2 and AirPort Utility 5.5.3.)

    I would suggest the following:
Please move the AirPort Express (AX) to the same room as the Time Capsule and perform a Factory Default Reset as follows:
    Pull the AX from power
    Wait a few minutes
Hold in the reset button and continue to hold it in for an additional 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the AX back in to power
Release the reset button after the hold period, and allow 40-45 seconds for the AX to display a slow, blinking amber light
Temporarily, connect a spare Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to your AX
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to name your AX, assign a device password and adjust Time Zone settings
Click the Wireless tab next to the Base Station tab and adjust your settings as follows:
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Nework Name = Same name as your Time Capsule wireless network
Enter a check mark next to Allow wirelss clients
Wireless Security = Same setting as your Time Capsule wireless network. You may need to refer to the Time Capsule settings if you are not sure what setting to use
Wireless Password = Same password as the Time Capsule wireless network
    Confirm Password
Click Update to save your settings
Close AirPort Utility and disconnect the Ethernet cable as soon as you see the message that the settings have been stored successfully on the AX
Wait 40-45 seconds for the AX to restart and display a green light
You can now locate the AX where it is needed, assuming that it can receive a good wireless signal at its new location
    Post back on your results
