Old HP laptop and SSD drive

Hi there!
I have old HP NC4400 laptop (which serves me really well) and I`m thinking about SSD drive to replace standard HDD. Please advice me if my laptop can serve at speed of sata1, sata2 or sata3 ssd drives? I`m not sure if it`s worth paying more for sata3 ssd if my laptop can`t handle that speed? Thanks

As far as I remember the 945gm mobile chipset is Sata 1 only so no point going for SSD, if you want little better performance from drive you would best look at a 500GB WD Black 7,200rpm drive as will be a little quicker, backward compatable to sata1 & is a durable drive too.
On 965 chipsets with sata 2 support we do SSD's & compared to WD Black even then difference is not huge, WD Black will be quite affordable & worth while upgrde ...

    HI all,
Can I upgrade my HP ENVY 14 DR DRE Laptop to a blue ray and SSD drive?
    cheers

You can upgrade from HDD to SSD drive, but will not recommend it as it will void the warranty on the unit.
Pertaining to  bluray drive, you might have some compatibility issues unless you find the right model.

  • What is the difference off sd and ssd driver ?

    Hi,
I don't understand what is the difference between sd and ssd driver ?

    Hi
    Read
    man sd
    man ssd
sd - driver for SCSI disk
    ssd driver for FC disk.
What driver will used depend what report driver of controller (HBA).
For example you install Qlogic HBA.
In case you install drivers from Qlogic - they report that is SCSI controller and will used sd driver.
In case you install driver from Oracle ( SUN) that bundled with SAN Foundation Kit, they report that is FC card and
    will used ssd driver.
    Regards.

  • UEFI, HP Recovery Discs, Windows 8 and SSD drives....?

Good afternoon folks, this is really giving me a headache!
I just got a new laptop (hp dv7 7338ea), a Windows 8 machine. I ran the HP recovery disc creation burner, and it burnt a bunch of DVDs (which you can only do once), and it verified them. I’ve used similar discs before on my old HP laptop when the HDD failed, and what I want to do here is apply these new Win8 restore discs to my new SSD (Samsung 840, http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/harddrives-internal/solidstate/128gbandabove/mz-7td250...).
So I swapped the drives over, and booted up the first disc. It went fine, it seemed to be happily able to format and start copying files, and then it asked for restore disc 2.
However, when I put that disc in, it just kicks it out again and continues to ask for disc 2. I put the disc in another machine and it loads fine, I tried copying the image to another disc but it didn’t like that either. Google suggests that people have been having this disc 2 issue for a few years across numerous devices, with no solution.....
SO! I thought right, it won’t let me use the discs, maybe I’ll just image my original hard drive and apply that image to the SSD. It took me a while to get the laptop to boot from the CD at all, and when I got Clonezilla running it couldn’t even see the HDD I had connected (via USB). It could tell there was something connected to the USB but...yeah.
I managed to use a different machine to copy the HP "Recovery" partition to another drive, but couldn't boot into it.
It’s one of those new UEFI computers, and it’s the first one I’ve come across, and I’ve seen stuff online suggesting that the system does all sorts of weird stuff to make life harder, but this is where I’m at a loss and you, being well up on the current state of the tech world, might know some solutions I wouldn’t think of!
Oh also, the BIOS has some weird legacy setting that’s disabled that suggests it’s for pre Win8 OS’, and when I try to turn it on it asks me to enter a confirmation string of numbers, and that concerns me, because that usually means whatever I’m doing is pretty serious, and seeing as I don’t know what it is, I’m not going to touch it!
It also has something called Secure Boot, which from Googling I think I have a basic understanding of, the problem is I don’t want to disable Secure Boot, as I’m concerned it will wipe the “keys” it uses and then I won’t be able to get them back for my HP Win8 system.....
I’m actually strongly considering buying Windows 7, disabling this UEFI thing as much as possible and giving up all my HP software. But I don’t want to, I bought Windows 8 (well, it came with this machine), and I'd really like to use it!
Do you guys and girls have any ideas? Thank you very much for your help! I love HP's computers, and I love this laptop, and I can't wait to get it running with this SSD

if you private message me i can talk you throgh it i got a bit of software that clones a image and then you can put that image on the new ssd drive

  • 1st gen mac book pro and SSD drive overheating

Sorry if this has been answered before but I found it hard to find my particular stiruation listed here.  I need some advice!
I have a 1st gen mac book pro 2.33 GHz with 3GB of RAM (I belive its two 2GB modules).
I recently replaced the dead CD drive with an adapter (from ebay) that turns it into a second drive, and installed a 120GB OCZ SSD drive.  This drive is not the startup drive and my 320 GB drive is a backup/storage.
While I was in there I replaced the thermal grease - it had been running hot for ages and I figured that dried out grease could be the reason.  I got some artic silver paste, carefully removed the logic board, cleaned off the new paste, and sparingly applied new paste.  Since I took out the fans in the process I cleaned those and the heat sync too. (all via info online, videos and infomational pages, etc, not with wild abandon)
Everything seems to be running fine (I watched some movies fromt he hard drive.  youtube made it run a bit hot but ok) except when the computer goes to sleep or I close the lid.  Then the computer gets crazy hot and the fans are in overdrive and it won't wake up from sleep.  The power adapter also gets super super hot.
I reset the PRAM and ran permissions, also updated the operating system - its not 10.6.8.
I *just* reset the SMC (we'll see if that has any effect).
I thought I'd ask here before opening up the machine again and poking around.
    Thank yoiu for any advice!

ok, so I think this is the issue - it has to do with the fact that my regular hard drive is a seagate.  This thread is pretty much what has bene happening to me.

  • Bootcamp and ssd drive

I have the new imac 27' with the sad and 2tb drive. Due to speed I want to have both os on the sad. boot camp tells me that I cannot modify the sad partition and I am required to make a partition on the 2tb drive. Please advise if I can do this and if it requires 3 party software then good. I now there must be a way to capitalize on the speed of the sad drive.
    T.

I know we have walked through and had others with iMac w/ SSD and 2TB, so it is doable.

Do you have OS X on the 2TB also?
Apple has gotten even more propritary than they were now with the 2011s and custom drives.
If there wasn't enough space, there is a common error message to that affect: you need to backup etc; or there is a not enough free space to insall.

  • W520 and SSD drive

    All:
I hope someone here can help me...  PLEASE
I have a new (today)  W520 (4284-AN4)   I installed x64 Win7 and then all Windows updates and then all lenovo updates (except fngerprint reader)  and while the system is nice the disk performance is less then spectacular for the SSD drive...
the performance resilts over all is 5.9
    Processor = 7.5
    Ram = 7.5
    Graphics = 6.9
    Gaming graphics = 6.9
    Disk Transfer = 5.9
I am told that is pretty bad for an SSD drive
The drive says it is an INTEL SSDSA2BW160G3L
I am using driver from Microsoft, Date 6/21/2006 verison 6.1.7600.16385
the system BIOS is: LENOVO 8BET47WW (1.27), 7/11/2011
    Does ANYONE have any ideas?
thanks in advance for any tips or tricks

So you are not running the factory preload? Check the sector alignment on the drive.  That could cause the performance to be degraded.
Run this tool to determine if you are aligned properly.

  • T60 and SSD drives.

I have the 8743 model of a T60 and thinking about replacing the hard drive (sata) with a SSD. Looking through the Products page on the Lenovo site, I saw some SSDs but none listed that said it would fit in a T60. At the moment I am not sure what form factor the original hard drive is, or is the notebook form factor are all the same but Lenovo did something non-standard? I was thinking about an Intel notebook SSD. Does anyone know of issues with such a swap out?

Thanks guys. I should have been more proactive searching the forums. Ah the magic of the post button. Yes I did find other similar threads and looks like its not that big of an issue. I did find that massively long thread about Sata II/III/Lenovo washing their hands of the problem. Needless to say, it did give some useful information about not wasting the extra bucks on a X25-E.

  • T400 and SSD drive

I've read about a hundered posts on SSD's on this forum and they have helped quite a bit. MY question is on fitment though. I have narrowed it down to these two drives..

    Crucial

From user experience here do either of these two fit into the stock HDD bracket. I had an OCZ in my HP that I attempted to transfer over to my ThinkPad just to end up with this

I would like to avoid hackery if at all possible and am willing to pay a premium for proper fitment. I've even considered using the factory Lenovo one from their website but the price is a bit steep. Thank you for your time.

What shows in the 3rd link is a drive that is NOT 2.5-inj compliant.
Not to mention that you do not put the SSD into the metal hard drive frame. You only put the rubber bumpers on it. You leave the metal frame on the hard drive because it locks the drive into the ultrabay caddy should you decide to use one. That frame is only there to help with vibrations anyway, which are not an issue with an SSD since there are no moving parts.
EDIT: That link needs to be updated to reflect this.

  • Sleep and SSD drive

What does the "put computer to sleep" option do in MBA's with a solid state drive?
    thanks
    Ken

The exact same thing it does on every other mac portable -- it's the same as putting a window's machine in "hibernate" mode, but it's instant on when you open the lid.
It shuts off your MBA until you open the lid. It WILL continue to draw some minimal battery charge if not plugged in.

How do I transfer my iTunes library from an old, slow pc laptop to a new(er), faster pc laptop? Do I have to make a copy of the iTunes library on the old pc laptop and re-install it on the new(er) pc laptop? Is it something that can de done using the actual iPod itself?

This is the method I would normally recommend:
Backup with this User Tip, restore the library to the new computer using the same tool, keep the backup up-to-date in future. Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer need to access protected content on it.
You can use your iPod classic to move your library to a new computer but if you don't already have a backup copy of the library (and your other important data) now is the time to think about it.
