Old iBook on a new network

I have an iMac G5 2.8 duo running 10.5.8. I also have an old iBook G3 500 running Panther with the appropriate Airport card. I have an Airport Extreme (not the new one) with the last firmware update Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.91.19). Prior to upgrading from a G4 to the G5, the iBook joined my un-encrypted wireless network no problem, along with all my other non-Apple devices. When I installed the firmware, I password encrypted the network using WPA2. The iBook still sees the network, but refuses to join. I checked my iMac's keychain to be sure I was using the correct password, but no luck. I have a Wii and a Tivo successfully hooked up to the wireless, and my brother can access the network with his BlackBerry as well. Why won't an Apple product recognize the encryption?

  • Old AEBS(g) into new network

    Hi,
I've recently replaced my wireless network in the house, to a Airport Extreme (n) connected to the internet and a Time Capsule (n) which extends the network. These two items have replaced my old Airport Extreme Base Station (white domed version, g). Rather than throwing out the now redundant Base Station, is it possible to integrate the old AEBS into the new network, to hopefully extend the network? OR, is there a combination of all three which will optimise the network?
    Thanks

Query 1. Does the Ethernet cable from the TC to the old AEBS go from the Ethernet port to Ethernet port OR Ethernet port to WAN port.
Since the AEBS will be in bridge mode, it won't matter which port (WAN or LAN) that you connect the TC to, but for consistency you can use the WAN port.
Query 2. After connecting everything up and restarting, the two networks were visible from the drop down menu in the top left corner however I could only connect to the internet via the network created by the old AEBS. Any suggestions why?
If the AEBS was configured as a bridge (Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)), then you should be able to connect to either network and still get Internet access. We may need to go over your configuration settings just to make sure everything is correct.
Query 3. Under the Airport Express in the Airport Utility, why is there a tab called 'Base Station' when it's not being used as such?
The "Base Station" tab is still relevant as this provides a means to configure the AirPort's base station name & administration password ... regardless on how it is being used.

  • Transferring files, settings and software from old ibook G4 to new macbook

    Hi all,
How do I boot up my brand new macbook (for the first time) and transfer all of my software, preference settings and files from my old IBOOK G4? Also, the Ibook has OS X 3.9 running and the new Macbook will obviously have a newer version. I don't want to lose/overwrite the OS version on the newer macbook.
Will I have any difficulty with my Adobe Creative Suite, Macromedia Flash or Dreamweaver in the move? Will all other preference settings and files be moved automatically? Will Itunes transfer all my music and video files automatically?

Hook the two machines up with a FireWire cable and then turn on the MacBook. Next, use the Migration Assistant to migrate your account from the iBook to the MacBook. Migrating items other than user accounts and their associated home folders may result in slow performance on the MacBook. You will be given the option to use the Migration Assistant when you first turn on the MacBook, and it can be run later by launching it from the /Applications/Utilities/ folder.

  • IBooks app retaining old .ibooks information after newer version of file is added to app

The title pretty much says it all.  When creating a file in iBooks author, then exporting it to say, the desktop, as an .ibooks file - then adding that to the iBooks app on the iPad in iOS 7, it reads fine and everything looks great.
Going back to that same project in iBooks author, revising it, then exporting it to the desktop (with and without different revision levels and titles), then importing it into iBooks on the iPad results in the existing file opening up on the iPad with none of the changes acknowledged.
If you first *remove* the original file from iBooks on the iPad, then import the new file you're fine - but for some reason the iBooks app doesn't acknowledge the revision update otherwise (this is for a non profit title not being distributed through the store).  We've tried this on three different computers and iPads, all with the same results.  Any ideas as to why this is?
    Thanks!

If you first *remove* the original file from iBooks on the iPad, then import the new file you're fine
You've just correctly defined the process for your example. The 'update' process that is quoted by Apple applies to store distribution.
If you can't rely on your users to delete the old version when you release a new version, don't version-update a given book - instead, publish editions...unique books in a series. myBook 1; myBook 2; myBook 3, etc.

  • Moving all my data from my old ibook to my new powerbook

Hi, i have recently purchased a 12" powerbook G4 and want to move all my data from my iBook G4. How can i make this happen so that it is set up exactly the same as my iBook including my Mail and all my other settings?
    Thanks Darren

Check to see if the Migration Assistant exists in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder; if so, connect both machines with a FireWire cable, open it and transfer your data over. If you haven't turned the PowerBook on before, you may be given the option to use the Migration Assistant during the setup process.
If the Migration Assistant isn't installed on the PowerBook, or if you don't want to use it, hook up both Macs with a FireWire cable, start up the iBook with the T key held down, open the Users folder on the iBook's hard disk, and locate the folder with your data. Next, open the Users folder on the PowerBook, rename the item with the house icon, drag over the folder from the iBook's hard disk to the Users folder, give it the name previously used by the folder with the house icon, log out, and log back in.

  • Synchronizing my old iBook G4 iCal to a Macbook

Yikes! I attempted to synch my old iBook with my new MacBook. The Assistant asked for a firewire connection - I complied- and then it said that I was not connecting to a computer running Max OS. What?
So I used an 8 gig flash drive to laboriously move some data. Now I need to sync my iCal. I have tried saving data to the flash but it will not work. I tried using my iPod to sync but no joy.
What do you wiser minds recommend?!

Received no help. Will look elsewhere.

  • Migrating from old iBook

Since the new MacBook has no Firewire I started the migration from an old iBook to the new MacBook by ethernet. However, the Assistant on the DVD that comes with the new MacBook does not run on 10.3.
    Now what?
Apple, what the &^%#*? Are you indeed turning into M$?

I used Migration Assistant (MA) to transfer all my files and media from my old PowerBook G4 to my new MacBook. When I opened MA on the old computer, I was asked to put the OS X CD that came with the new Mac into the old optical drive. Something was downloaded onto the old Mac that made it compatible with the new Mac. I assumed it was to sync the versions of MA but I was never told. All I know was that I was then able to begin the transfer.
I used my wireless connection rather than the ethernet ports. To my dismay, the transfer took over 11 hours. To give you some scale, I had over 6000 photos and videos, about 1200 songs, less than 100 docs. As I primarily use the old computer for the internet and iLife, I had very few applications other than the ones that came with it when I bought it. However, I wanted the settings and bookmarks - especially Safari - so I included Applications in the transfer. That's where I think I made a mistake because it seemed to take an inordinate amount of time checking versions and transferring. You never really know what is going on during the transfer but there are vague one-liners like, "Transferring Applications" that are displayed under the sliding thermometer that tracks your progress. I left the two computers open, side by side, and went to bed with my fingers crossed.
I got up the next morning and immediately looked at the new Mac to see if everything/anything had come over. I couldn't find a thing but I had lost 40 Gigs of memory somewhere. I searched frantically through every folder on the new hard-drive but couldn't find the new files. I finally had to take it down to the Apple store where I have bought it and get a Genius to help me. First thing he did was check my Users folder to see how many logins there were for this computer. To distinguish the old Mac from the new Mac, I had forgotten that I had added my middle initial to my name. A simple logoff and login as my new personna and Voila! Transfer completed!! Everything right where it should be and all my settings. MA was slow but it worked.
Sorry for relating the total saga but I it might be useful to others. I don't know if using an ethernet cable would have speeded things up. Maybe someone else can tell that story.
I'm happy with the new MacBook, although I miss the size and convenience of my old beloved 12" G4. I don't have any glare issues because I tilt the screen and change my seat for better light - which is why I thought most of us bought a laptop and not a desktop. It's mobile, faster, bigger, and brighter. I'm happy. Hope this helps.

  • New MacBook-How to move some files from Old iBook

    Hello All ...
I just got a new MacBook and I would like to move a few things over from my old iBook.
Mostly I need all my mail stuff and be able to connect to the internet and such. The rest would be files, pictures and other documents ...
What would be the best way to do this ... does migration assistant do it well or should I do it manually? How do I get to migration or setup assistant and should I do it right away or after.
Should I set up my network connections on my new MacBook first and forget about trying to transer everything from my old iBook. I heard that the less you move over the better ..
Any tips or info much appreciated .... thanks

    Hi Neil ...
    thanks for the reply ...
If I move over my user account ... that's pretty well everything inside it... isn't it? .... Is that good?
For example ... I have Microsoft Office 2001 on there ... and I plan on installing and using 2004.
Would that be an application I should delete before using migration ?

  • Same admin user from old iBook to new MacBook Leopard?

I have an old iBook 10.4.11 and .Mac (MobileMe). I am going to buy a new MacBook. I won't be using the iBook anymore. I am admin user - minimal usage - I have a .Mac website, email, DSL (no networking), no synching to another computer.
Can I create the admin user on the new MacBook with the same name, shortname, and password as the old iBook? One reason I want to do this is that it appears to be simpler as far as accessing the iDisk and transferring the .Mac (MobileMe) account to the new computer. Also it's the login I'm used to. There seems to be no reason to change it that I know of.

    Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply! I don't plan to use Migration Assistant at all. I am hoping to set up the admin user, .Mac connection, and then pull mail settings and Safari bookmarks using this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1872713
A few relevant files/folders have been copied to my iDisk>Documents using these instructions, like Mail and Safari bookmarks. I also have the iDisk>Sites (custom html .Mac webpages) folder. I have a few actual album CDs that I will insert and import into iTunes. I like the idea of a clean start with the MacBook and intel Leopard.

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

  • I want to set up my time capsule on a completely new network & location without losing the old backups. How do I do this?

I want to set up my time capsule on a completely new network & location without losing the old backups. How do I do this? I cannot find anything in the user manual.

The TC is very hard to just move.. it retains too much of the old network setup.. buried deep in the bowels of the firmware configuration files.. or even on the hard disk special partitions used by the TC.. invisible to you btw.. !!
Do a factory reset and setup from scratch.
That factory reset will have no affect on your backups.. even if you rename the TC.. not a bad things since you also want clients to respond to the new network.. simply reset TM to the new TC name and location.
    See A4 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    Factory reset.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    Factory reset Gen 5
Hold in reset for about 5sec until the status light flashes quickly.
If your AirPort Time Capsule still doesn’t respond, do a similar reset to the Gen1-4.
Unplug your AirPort Time Capsule .. hold in reset and power the TC back on.. without releasing the reset.. wait until status led flashes rapidly.

  • I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use?

I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use? Essentially having two wifi connection off the same network? If so how do I set this up?

Extending using a wireless connection always results in a performance compromise.
If the Express is going to extend using a wireless connection, then the Express will need to be located about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the general area where you need more wireless coverage. The more that you have line-of-sight between the Extreme and Express, the better the network will operate.
Remember......the Express can only "extend" the quality and signal speed that it receives, so it needs to be located where it can get a very good signal from the Extreme. Although Apple cleverly uses the term "extend", a more accurate term for the Express would be "repeater".
If the Express will extend by connecting to the Extreme using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection......highly recommended for best performance.....then the Express can be located exactly where you need more wireless coverage. There is no signal loss at all through the Ethernet cable, so the Express gets a full speed signal no matter where it might be located.
Post back to let us know which way to you want to go.

  • Migrating old ibook's files on an external hard drive on to new iBook

I have an old white iBook G3 500 with a power adapter connector problem. Since I can no longer plug in the power adapter I transferred all of the old iBook's files to a bootable external firewire hard drive using the program Super Duper, which copies all files including system and hidden files. I then connected the hard drive to a G4 tower and booted it from the external drive. All of my files and applications worked fine.
Today I received a brand new iBook 14 Inch G4 1.42 GHz. When I start it up I would like to transfer all of the files and applications from the external drive. Can I just connect the external drive and tell the new iBook to transfer all of the files?
I have used the set up assistant once or twice before using firewire target mode, but because I use it so seldomly I want to make sure this was a proper way to migrate the data and applications from my old machine.
    iBook 14 Inch G4 1.42 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Can I just connect the external drive and tell the new iBook to transfer all of the files?
Yes, assuming the external drive is a bootable clone. If it won't boot the old iBook, then the clone needs to be redone in such a way to make it bootable. It probably won't boot the new iBook unless it has 10.4.4 on it.

  • Old iBook, new Panther

I dusted off the old Blueberry clamshell, put some more memory in it, and got ready to install 10.3.5 from a gray&white installation disk, which I used on my Pismo. But - the disk is a DVD, and my old iBook has a CD drive ! I don't suppose I can Carbon Copy the DVD to a CD. Are there cheap DVD drives for the Blueberry? Buy a new copy of 10.3 on a CD ?
All I want is the ability to run a medern browser so my wife won't be using my new powerbook all the time !

    All:
You can get Panther CDs at AppleRescue
    Good luck.
