Old Icon Editor in LabVIEW 2012

I'm observing a 'weird' behavior with the icon editor in LabVIEW 2012, suddenly I'm starting to see the 'old' editor on my VIs
Anyone seen this before?
Thanks,
 <<-N->>

I've been seeing a similar problem.  First I get error shown in the attached, then the icon editor version shown in the attached.  I have tried reinstalling the LabVIEW2012 as well as doing a repair.
I am using Windows7.  I have a lab computer with the same software which works fine so there is something funny about my laptop.

Curt

  • Why does LabVIEW 2009 revert to the old icon editor?

    Hi,
I have noticed that sometimes when I am trying to edit the icon in LabVIEW 2009, I get the old style icon editor from LabVIEW 8.5 days instead of the more advanced new one with layers, gliphys, etc.  Once the old style editor shows up, there doesn't seem to be a way to go back to the advanced editor.  Has anyone seen this behaviour?  I have version 8.5 of LabVIEW still installed, should I remove it?  Do I need to restart my computer?
    Thanks.

  • "Small Font" in LabVIEW 2013/2012 Icon Editor

    Dear All:
I have encountered a strange thing recently while using icon editor in LabVIEW 2012 and 2013. I am accustomed to using "Small Font" when editting VI's icon in the Icon editor(LabVIEW 8.0,8.2,8.6,2011), but i found this font in LabVIEW 2012/2013 is different from the one in LabVIEW2011(or 8.6..), the details are as attached images. My question is how can I do to use "Small Font" as I did in LabVIEW 2011, and how to remove the color layers while editting text. any help will be great appreciated.  Thanks very much. Hope your reply……

Then do the settings, choose right FONT (Small) and Font size (8 or 9)...!! By doing any changes in the settings, it will not modify any existing text..!!
But after making the changes in the Font setting, next time when you'll try to write any text, either on any of the four lines or by using the text tool, you'll see the text with changed font settings.

  • LabVIEW 2012 f1 Icon Editor Error

I am having an issue with LV 2012 Icon Editor.  32 bit installation, Windows 7 Enterprise.  Fresh install I downloaded from the website.
Everytime I try to edit an Icon, I get an error 7, File not found.  It seems that it cannot find any of the template or glyphs.
    Frameworks:\
    LabVIEW Data:\Glyphs
Error 7 occurred at File/Directory Info in Check Path.vi->Write PNG File.vi->Icon Editor First Call.vi->ReadDataFromLabVIEWINI.vi->Load.vi->Icon Editor Init Refs.vi->Classes Initialization.vi->lv_icon.lvlib:lv_icon.vi->lv_icon.lvlib:lv_icon.vi.ProxyCaller
I should mention that it still pulls up the old Icon editor, but I would like to use the newer one (introduced in LV2009/10 ish)
Has anyone else seen this error with the Icon Editor?
I am also getting a pop up that LV failed to create the Recovery VIs.
It seems like I am having some file path issues, but I left everything as LV defaults.  These would seem to be standard config items...

It sounds like your LabVIEW installation was corrupted in some manner, since the new icon editor should be the default on a new install.  I would try repairing that first.
For the new icon editor to show up, you should have a file called lv_icon.lvlibp in <LabVIEW>\resource\plugins.  This is the icon editor.  If it is missing or renamed, you get the old editor.
The glyphs and templates are in your <Documents>\LabVIEW Data directory, in subdirectories Glyphs and Icon Templates, respectively.  These are shared by all versions of LabVIEW installed.  A fresh install of LabVIEW will have very few templates.
You can use the icon editor to sync your glyphs with the library at ni.com.  Use the tools menu to get them.

  • LabVIEW2009: How to replace new Icon Editor with old one?

    Colleagues,
I really don't like the new icon editor introduced in LabVIEW 2009:
That was nice attempt to make "embedded Photoshop" with lot of features:
But I really don't like it, because:
    - it opened EVERY TIME on the RIGHT monitor (I have three monitors, and primary monitor in the middle)
    - it takes lot of time for launch (old icon editor was started momentally)
    - from usability point of view - it was wrong to place tools on the right side. Commonly they located on the left side (and only in old icon editor, but also in imageprocessing software like Adobe Photoshop). Also front panel UI design... hmmm... this can be better...
    - some bugs or changed functionality (for example - select ROI, then press <Del> button - nothing happened)
    etc...
Is it possible to replace it with old one:
Ideal solution will be - simple switch between both editors (some introduced features are not so bad).
    Thanks in advance,
    Andrey.

Go into <LabVIEW>\Resource\Plugins and rename lv_icon.vi. This is the plugin that's called when you invoke the icon editor, and if it's not there, LV reverts to the built-in editor (at least today. I'm not sure how many versions ahead they will keep the code).
You should note that the editor is open source, so you can go in and change what you want (or save yourself time and use the changes others have made, such as PJM's thread here. You may also want to look at the other discussions in that group).

  • Labview 2010 icon editor extremely slow

Working on a medium size project in LabVIEW 2010.  Out of the blue the icon editor slows down.  So slow that typing in one text character takes 20 seconds.  After closing the editor there is about 3 to 5 second lag on every action I make in LabVIEW.
Restarting LabVIEW sets things back to normal until I open the Icon Editor.  Opening any SubVI results in this problem.  And this occurs in any project or even if no project is open and I try to edit icon in an Untitled 1 subVI.
Anyone else seen this behavior.  I really don't want to re-install LabVIEW 2010.
    Thanks

I'd almost suggest using the old icon editor, then edit and save the VI, then try the new icon editor again.  One issue could be with keeping track of all that layer information and one of them having bad data or something.  By using the old icon editor and saving, it might save the icon as the flat image it is, and wipe away all that layer information the new icon editor uses.
Of course before there was an improved icon editor developers made their own, and I'm curious to know if they still work, and if they would load faster.

  • LV7-style icon editor in LV2011

Onece (two minutes ago) I tried to open Icon Editor double clicking icon of a VI. Suddenly "Old" Icon Editor (known from LabVIEW 7 and other old versions) was opened and ready to edit the icon. The computer has only LabVIEW 2011 installed.
    1. I admit that the double click could be unprecise.
    2. Does it mean that the old Icon Editor is available in parallel with the new one? If so, how can it be accessed?
    Thank you

  • 2014 icon editor layers issue

I have an issue with layers in the "Icon Editor" in LabView 2014 SP1.
Each time I use the Icon Editor and I save the changes, all layers are merged together also if the property "merge layer on commit" is unchecked.
In the previous releases (2013 SP1, 2011 SP1, ...), I could save the layers separately (not merged).
There is an other property to set the layers saved separately (not merged), or this is an unexpected behaviour?

    PeterFoerster,
    thanks for the replay.
Starting from yours note, I started a completely new LV-project and the icon layers work fine!
Definitely, I experience the described issue with all VIs that are been created in LV 2013 SP1 and now are open and saved with LV 2014 SP1.
In the project created with LV 2013 SP1, and now open in LV 2014 SP1, if I create a new VI the the icon layers work fine!
    I use LV 2014 SP1 32 bit, English.

  • LV 2009 Icon editor

Just installed LV 2009 and had to try out the new icon editor.
Firstly, I'm very happy to see the huge increase in productivity possible with this new editor.  Great stuff guys. Including the Glyphs in the editor is a HUGE time-saver.
I have noticed, however that there is a feeling of lag when drawing on the icon picture.  It's as if the picture being displayed is about 1/4 of a second behind what I'm actually doing.  Not a major problem, but I'm curious if others see the same thing.
A possible problem is the fact that when writing text on the Icon, selecting the Name of the layer (on the panel outside of the drawing area) and typing does not shift focus away from the icon.  I need to manually select a different tool other than the text tool for the drawing editor before I can enter text anywhere in the editor.  The picture control retains focus apparently.
    Aside from that, brilliant!

How long does it take for the Icon Editor to come up for you? I have found it to be quite slow. While I'm running LV2009 in a virtual machine, I also have 8.6 in a virtual machine, and the Icon Editor for 8.6 comes quite quickly.
First time to call it it takes quite a while, about 6-7 seconds on my machine but subsequent calls are much quicker.
I know the old Icon editor could be replaced (mark Balla did a great job of creating an icon editor which bears striking similarity to the new NI one in many places), maybe the new one can be copied to an older LV version, I have no idea.

  • Polymorphic icon editor - reverts back to old editor

    LabVIEW 2010 SP1
I have a set of polymorphic VIs that I have in a Instrument Library Project in the Public Folder.
When I try to edit the icon and select a Glyph to drag into the icon field LabVIEW reverts to the old editor!
This is really slowing down my productivity.  Is there a way to fix this?
This also happens to non-polymorphic VIs Icon Editor.

  • Statechart code editor is giving me the finger (LabVIEW 2012, Win 7 32-bit)

    Hello,
Is anyone else seeing this? In my statechart code editor (for actions, reactions and guards), the Position/Size/Select cursor and the Connect Wire cursor have both been replaced with the Operate Value cursor (a.k.a. the Finger cursor). It makes it hard to tell what LabVIEW will do when I click my mouse, and it looks weird to place wires with a finger.
Also, the little blue "resize squares" sometimes don't show up, when I hover over an Input/State node

I've heard of errors related to using the icon editor causing the cursor to be stuck with an incorrect icon.  But I thought that had been fixed with more recent versions of LV.  See this thread for some info.  http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/paint-bucket-displayed/m-p/1878283/highlight/true#M635136

  • LabVIEW 2010 icon editor -- why is white not white

OK, so I'm creating an Icon in LV 2010.
    I want a white background.
So I choose the white color in the palette.  But that doesn't quite look like white (a little darker than white).
so I go get a custom color, and set it to 255/255/255 (R/G/B).  add it to my custom colors.  hover over it quickly with the mouse and see that it is actually 255/255/255.
Then I go back to the actually icon editing, and make sure my color selection (foreground/background) is both WHITE (255/255/255).
    I draw a box.
    The box isn't white!!!
the box is drawn with colors 246/246/246 (R/G/B) not 255/255/255!
Go create another custom color of 255/255/254.
    Draw the box again.
Box looks white, but it is actually 255/255/254 (what you would expect to get).  Close enough for me to use, so I can get on with making my icons, but I just need to remember to not try to actually set the color to 255/255/255 -- actually use something ever so slightly different.
Best I can figure out -- if you hover over a transparent section, you see the color go to 255/255/255, so LV must be using 255/255/255 as transparent.  But then it says that color is 255/255/255, and it's not, it's transparent.  So the color should be shown as T/T/T so I don't need to know the special magical decoder of 255/255/255 = transparent to see if one single pixel is transparent color or not.
End of rambling and venting, and on to the real question:
What's special about taking 255/255/255 white and converting it to 246/246/246 instead of something closer like 254/254/254?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The Icon Editor thinks it is doing you a favor, and it probably really is given the (perhaps outdated) method LV uses for transparency on the BD.  By design, any "white" on the outside of a BD object (ie. icon) is considered transparent and not part of the object as far as clicking is concerned.  I have also discovered the hard way that "white" means any pure grey (R=G=B) with R,G,B > 246.  Tweaking the B value is one way to avoid this (as you have discovered).
You can get some very interesting effects when LV thinks your entire subVI is transparent.

Check the LabVIEW Data folder in 'My Documents'. If it is set to read only, the icon editor doesn't work.
Usually this is a sign for it, when the Icon Editor is displayed for a brief moment.
The IE is open source. If the LabVIEW data folder is not write-protected, navigate to LabVIEW 2009\resource\plugins\ lv_icon.vi and check whether the IE is executable at all.

  • RT build not recognized by LabVIEW 2012

Recently I began upgrading an existing RT project from LV 2011 to 2012, and I have run into a problem when I attempt to build the RT application. The application builds without errors, but when completed the icon within the project is a blue circle with a white question mark on the inside, and does not deploy correctly. According to LV help this icon represents a file with an unknown editor. My initial thought is that I am missing a toolkit, or something else that I need to install.
    system specs:
    W7 32bit
    LV 2012
    4x RT targets
Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hello,
In terms of required installation, when upgrading from LabVIEW 2011 to LabVIEW 2012, you will also need to install LabVIEW Real-Time 2012 and NI-RIO 12.0.  You will then have to make sure your RT targets also have their software components upgraded to match your host.
Which icon in your project is a blue circle with a white question mark?  A screen shot would be helpful.  I have seen this question mark, and removing then re-adding the offending file (.lvproj in my case) removed the question mark.  Assuming your software is all installed, you might try this method.  You could also try navigating to the location of the file in your Windows Explorer and launching it into LabVIEW from there.  This should associate LabVIEW with that type of file, and allow LabVIEW to work with it.

  • Icon Editor Templates

Have there been any changes between LabVIEW 2012 and 2014 in the way the Icon Editor handles the templates?
I opened a file in LabVIEW 2012 and started modifying the icon from the default.  I picked the _box template and worked from there.  It is a black outline with a white background.
Later, I was doing the same thing to another file in LabVIEW 2014.  I picked the same _box template.  It looked like a black icon with a transparent background once I got to the Layers page.
I thought maybe I had different version of icon templates, until I realized both LabVIEW version point to the My Documents\LabVIEW Data\Icon Templates folder.  The _box is a .png file in VI\Frameworks subfolder.  So I'd expect it to look the same in both LabVIEW versions.
Or is it somehow related to the .bin file?
However, working with the box with transparent background in LV14, it at least seems to treat the background as white when I place it on other block diagrams.  I'm not seeing wires show through transparent areas.  So everything is just fine.
I just can't figure out why the icon template looks different in LV12 versus LV14.
See the attached .png file to see what I'm talking about.

Interesting problem, I will add that this happened to me with fresh LabVIEW installs and the change seemed to occur between LabVIEW 2013 SP1 and LabVIEW 2014
I also played around with the transparency and it seems that the transparency will be kept only if it is not within the borders of filled in areas.  I made some weird shapes to show what I mean.
Here is the Icon Editor for the VI I made
And here is what it looke like in another VI.  I changed the background color to show transparency.
So ya, no answers here but that sure is interesting.  I'll see if I can ask someone who might know more tomorrow
