Old iMac as separate render/exporting machine

Hi
Im finally upgrading to a Mac Pro and was wondering if I can network my old iMac and use it for rendering/exporting. I heard it can be done with Premier but not FCP. Can anyone point me in the direction of a tutorial or explain how to set up the two computers and what to do in FCP?
Many Thanks
Adrian

Hi Adrian,
Sorry but at present only Compressor working with QMaster can benefit from using one or more computers to speed up things.

  • Best way to transfer certain files from old iMac to new (have Time Machine)

Hey guys.  I'm going to be in the process of moving my data over from my old iMac to a new one.  I have been using Time Machine for a while w/ mostly Snow Leopard and Lion on my old iMac so everything is certinaly backed up via those means.  However, the new iMac will be on Mountain Lion and it's a fresh clean install that I really don't want to muck up with all the *crap* I've accumulated over the years.  So I've decided I only want to transfer the important files to me and I'll install any applications fresh later.  The files I really need are my extensive iTunes library, all my photos, all my documents.  My e-mail is on IMAP so I believe that will sync on its own.
Can the Time Machine migration assistant that pops up with a new computer at setup able to do these specific tasks without an all or none deal?  Or should I copy and paste out of Time Machine or maybe even the external drive itself.  I've had issues copying and pasting iTunes libraries in the past where it lost its entire architecture some how.
    Any advice appreciated

Can the Time Machine migration assistant that pops up with a new computer at setup able to do these specific tasks without an all or none deal?
Yes. For a detailed walkthrough, see here:

  • How do I migrate my extensive ipad files and apps from my old iMac to my new windows machine?

I had to go to a windows machine. All of my stuff, apps, books, music, pictures, etc. is on my iMac. Is there any way to gracefully move the information  from the iMac to the windows machine? It's about 60 GB.

If all your data is on your iTunes library, follow the steps of this site to transfer your library to a PC with an external disk > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751 You have to do the "Restoring your iTunes Library backup" step on your PC.
Apart from that, if you have got more data you want to transfer, you can put it in the external disk, too. You must do this because there isn't an app to migrate files from a Mac to the PC

  • Separate Render /export drive?

FCP newbie here, trying to figure out is hardware requirements.
From what I can see so far, using a 2012 Mac Pro 3.33 GHz six-core,  drive speed is the #1 bottleneck when exporting files.
I'm getting more ram, and I'm getting a super-fast PCIe ssd array as my main video editing drive, but I'm wondering:
Is it recommended to also have a SEPARATE drive to receive the exported files?  In other words, if my source video files are on that PCIe ssd, capable of 762 Mb/s read-write,  would I actually be slowing things down by exporting to the same drive?
If a separate drive is recommended, and it's not as fast as the source drive, will that then become a botleneck, "wasting" the speed of the source drive?
I aks because I'd love to simply export to one of my external backup drives, but they are all 2 TB Black Caviar sata.  Not even close to the PCIe ssd.  If they become a bottleneck, then I've wasted a lot of $$$ on the source drive.
Or what about exporting to an internal,  3G SSD?  Still a bottleneck?
    -thanks.

Thanks, again Jakob.  I still don't really have any kind of specific answer to my main questions, which I desperately need.
However,  I did download AJA System Test.
It doesn't tell me how much an individual drive is throughputting while FCP is active, but it was still quite eye opening.   I like that you can run it with different file resolutions & bit rates selected.
It also helped me realize that Activiy Monitor was DEFINITELY showing the sum of ALL drive activity. The numbers it showed were just about the max in PLUS out of both drives in use. (based on the AJA test.)  So clearly, these drives are a bottleneck.
Any idea what software can actually monitor a single drive's throughput while an application is running?   In other words, an app that can tell me when any one particular drive is coming close to being a bottleneck?
Can anyone give me some real-world numbers, or at least ballpark recommendations?
Based on a 3.33 MHz 6-core Mac, and, say,  1920X1080  10 bit files. Nevermore than 2 source files streaming at one time.  (A-B roll)
1:  As your source drive gets faster, at what point (if any) will it be fast enough that cpu speed becomes the bottleneck?
2:  If you use the same drive as the destination drive, then how much faster before you reach that same point?
3:  If you use a separate destination drive, again, how fast before it cannot possibly be a bottleneck?
My guess is that you'll always benefit from a faster drive, even with a G SSD, but does anyone actually know?  Are we all just fumbling around in the dark?

  • Moving snow leopard data from from old iMac time machine to Yosemite

I have a pre-2007 17" iMac running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.  Time Machine is used to backup this machine.
I plan to buy a new iMac or Mac Mini with Yosemite, and would like to move some of the data from the old iMac to the new Mac machine.
Can I connect the new Yosemite Mac to Time Machine and selectively restore data from the Snow Leopard backup?

    This solution worked perfectly (almost).
Tips: don't forget to deauthorize old computers for itunes content lol.
The folders copied over easily, and lauching each program, a few prompts and each had pulled in my old data easily. I noticed one currupt picture that I'll look on my old machine to find. I plan on verifing quantity of music, photos, etc to double check. And iMovie was having a lil trouble opening, hopefully thats resolved with my gbs of unedited videocamera movies. Otherwise easy.
I noticed my iweb didnt import, so I probally need to find it in documents or something.
Thanks for all the help. Hope this helps someone else.

  • Transferring data from old imac to new imac using Time Machine.

Old imac is a 2006 that does not take Lion.  New Mac just purchased this month is a 27in imac.  I tried to set it up using firewire, but old imac wont join new imac to to the different versions of Snow Leopard and Lion.  I wnt back in and used the Time machine to start my back up.  New imac keeps going to sleep, bu I think it is stilll trasferring.  Old imac shows msg that Time Machine is unable to complet this task, but after clicking OK.  It continues to march.  I think I have 10 hours left on the transfer.  Is there an easier way to do this?

you are welcome. and here is a link to a pic of firewire connectors. the one on the left is FW800 and on the right is FW400

  • Transferring Data from old iMac G3 233Mhz with OS 8.6 to new Imac

Hi. I'm new to this forum. I have an old iMac ( one of the original Blueberries) which runs on OS 8.6. i have bits and pieces on this which I would quite like to transfer onto my new iMac which is a brand new intel based 24 inch 2.5Ghz. The old computer only has a 6GB hard drive and only 96mbs of Ram. The drive is CD-Rom. I read somewhere that the new Macs could still run stuff on OS 9 but am unsure if this applies to 8.6 and wondered if anyone could help me with this query.
    Thanks

    Hi, Sophs -
I read somewhere that the new Macs could still run stuff on OS 9 but am unsure if this applies to 8.6 and wondered if anyone could help me with this query.
Certain Mac models which can use OSX can also use OS 9 as Classic, which is OS 9 run as a program to provide an environment (shell) within which many OS 9 programs can be run. For this use, though, only OS 9.1 or 9.2.x can be used.
Unfortunately, no Intel based machine can use OS 9 as either a boot OS or as Classic.
The data files (documents) from your old iMac can be used on the new machine - most new OSX apps can open files made by older versions of the same, and sometimes similar, software. However, the programs would not be usable.
How to transfer stuff from the old machine to the new -
The simplest, cheapest way would be to use an on-line storage service, such as iDisk in .Mac - upload items from your iMac, download them to the new machine.
Next easiest would be to get a USB external hard drive of modest size, and use it to copy stuff from the iMac to the new machine.
Another possibility would be to get an external firewire enclosure, pull the hard drive fro the iMac and install it in the enclosure, then connect it to the new machine.
It used to be possible to connect two such machines via ethernet and use File Sharing to transfer the files. However, I'm not sure if it is possible to do that between your old iMac and a new Intel machine.

Approaching the issue of running old programs from a different path, there are some emulators which will allow the use of older Mac OS's on Intel machines. This article describes a few of them -
    http://www.atpm.com/12.09/classic.shtml
There's more info on SheepSgaver here -
    http://theappleblog.com/2006/07/01/classic-on-intel-macs-courtesy-of-sheepshaver /
Whether or not any of the emulators would serve your purposes well, or at all, is a different issue.

How do I copy my old xl files from my XP machine to operate on xl for Mac on my new iMac.  When I copy them onto a stick and transfer them it automatically makes them xls files which are then corrupted when I try to open them in xl for mac

Sorry, yes this is Microsoft Excel.  The Microsoft XP has Excel files denoted as xl, the later versions of Microsoft Excel are denoted as xls files.  The later verions of Microsoft Excel open the xl files OK, does Excel for Mac not able to do this?

  • How do I get a new iMac to inherit Time Machine backups from my old iMac?

After successfully migrating from my old iMac to my new iMac, I connected my Time Machine drive (containing the backup files from my old iMac).  Following the instructions from my Apple Genius Desk guru, I opened System Preference>Time Machine and selected the Time Machine drive to be my designated Time Machine for my new iMac.   I was presented with a dialog asking if I wanted to "Inherit the backup files that existed on the drive" (or words to that effect).  I selected "Yes".  I was told that this would create a continuous backup record, so that I would be able, using the "Enter Time Machine" command, to access all the backups going forward for my new iMac, but also all the files from my previous iMac, in a "seamless" chain of backups.  However, it didn't work out as I expected.  Looking in the Finder at the contents of my Time Machine drive, I saw that both the current and the prior backup files appeared to be there, all inside one folder, as I expected.  But using the "Enter Time Machine" command from the Time Machine drop-down menu I could not go back any further than the moment of migration to the new iMac.  On the upside, it seems like I will be able to recover old backup files using the Finder, but, on the downside it appears that I will NOT be able to use "Enter Time Machine" to return to search the backup files from my old iMac, in a "seamless" fashion as I had expected.  Did I miss something???  Or is this just the way it is???

Without knowing what you have tried please open System Preferences - Sharing - File Sharing and select File Sharing. If you still have trouble you can call AppleCare in the morning when they re-open. You have 90 days of telephone support if you haven't already bought AppleCare.

Go to the airport utility and erase the TC disk.. a quick erase is fine and takes less than 1min usually.
A one pass erase takes several hours depending on how big the hard disk is.. but is somewhat safer in that it tests the drive condition. I normally don't bother for a TM backup.
When you start over you should be able to fit both backups on the TC.. assuming the disk is 2x larger at least than the space used on both the MB and the iMac.
If not you can also add a USB drive to the TC, and use that for one of the computers.
The slowest one is best.. as USB is slow.. but fast enough for wireless you won't notice much.

  • Migrating from Time Machine from old iMac to new used iMac.

So, I bought a used iMac, and want to migrate to the new one using my Time Machine backup. Problem is, I go to Migration Assistant, and it asks for the admin password, which I don't have, and the place I bought it from is closed, of course. I had Lion on my old iMac, and I imagine my Time Machine backup is in Lion, but the iMac I bought has Snow Leopard. What do I do to migrate?

Yes, you will need the Admin password.  See http://www.cultofmac.com/111456/discover-the-hidden-password-reset-tool-in-lion- os-x-tips/
Then follow the instructions in option #4 of the box in the green box in Problems after using Migration Assistant.  (I know you haven't used it yet, but to transfer your user account(s) properly, without losing permission to your backups, that's what you need to do.)

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPhone?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).
    No data will be lost.

If you live near an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment to have the computer tested. Supposedly there is no charge for testing.
