Old iMac fragged, want to sync iPhone to MacBook

My iMac's motherboard died. Shouldn't have happened, score one for corporate planned obsolescence, etc. Now I'm using my MacBook as my main computer. What files from what directories do I need to transfer from the old machine to allow my phone to sync to the new machine? Thanks to all for any advice you can offer.
--jody.

I assume you can still connect to your iMac's hard disk.
Drag the entire iTunes folder from your iMac's ~/Music folder to the same place on your Macbook.
Also, drag the Mobile Sync folder from ~/Library/Application Support to your macbook's ~/Library/Application Support folder. That folder contains your iPhone backups.

I want to use my old iMac G3 as second monitor to my MacBook Pro, how?
    Thanks!

You can't really do it in any normal way; that is, using the MacBook's video output port.
    You can use this program
    http://www.screenrecycler.com/home.html
to make your iMac screen act as a second display, over a network connection. ScreenRecycler runs on your MacBook and creates a virtual second display. It uses the open-source VNC (screen sharing) protocol to serve that second display over the local network. You then run a VNC client program (usually free) on the iMac G3 and display the MacBooks virtual second screen in a window, which you can display full screen. Your iMac then appears to be the MacBook's second screen. You use System Preferences Displays pane to set it up, as you would a real second display.
How well this works depends on your iMac's speed, what Mac OS version it runs, and the speed of the network connection. If you connect the two directly with an Ethernet cable (Cat-5 or better), the network speed should be decently fast (at 100Base-T). If your iMac G3 has Tiger (10.4), you can use this program as the VNC client
    http://www.jinx.de/JollysFastVNC.html
(there are free VNC clients for 10.3 and earlier)
However, this solution will never be as fast (in terms of screen refresh rate) as a real display using a real video connection. But you can try it at no cost, to see if it meets your needs.

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

  • Old Mac Ipod won't sync with new Macbook (help!)

Ok so this is probably something really easy but I can't for the life of me get it to work.
I got a new Macbook Pro recently and have been building up a new library with my older songs and newer ones I've acquired since the purchase. My problem is when I go to sync my Ipod to the new Mac my ipod automatically goes to the "ok to disconnect" screen without syncing anything. I pressed "sync" and "transfer purchases" and it still goes into disconnect mode, very quickly too.
Its almost as if the ipod is protecting itself and dosen't want to sync to the new Mac for that reason, but that's what I need it to do. Its a 'Mac to Mac' move so its not like I'm putting a Mac ipod into a Windows computer
What do I have to do, or how do I get to a setting that would let my ipod sync successfully on this new laptop? If anybody could help it would totally save the day.
The ipod is an iPod classic 2008-09 120gb

    Hey Ginger795
You would have to tell it to erase and sync the iPod. With a new library you will want to sync exclusively or set up “Manually manage music” on the iPod to make it work properly

  • Old iMac external hd library going to new macbook pro library

i can't seem to find my exact situation on this forum.
i have an old iMac where i had a hard drive connected to it, which is where my library was.
i now have a new macbook pro and i want to connect the samr harddrive, with the library on it, and have that operate as the itunes library on the new macbook pro.
I got it to work flawlessly on iPhoto. I just held "option" when i started the program and it asked me where the library was. I pointed it to the hard drive and it work no problem.
I tried the same thing for iTunes and when i pointed it to the folder (because there is no itunes packaged file like in iphoto" it gave me a message stating that there was no itunes library in that folder.
I then tried to go through the preferences / advanced / "change media folder" route, and when i change the folder nothing seems to happen.
Am I missing a step? help please

I think I know hte issue but not the immediate solution. Your external drive doesn't have the full library, just the media files. The library files which have all the things you see in hte iTunes browser are on your old computer so you don't see it when you plug the drive into your new computer.
You could try copying just the library files from the hard drive of your old computer to the same location on your new computer, then try opening hte external drive. This might work.
Incidentally, mpst people put their whole library, not just hte media files, on their external drives so it is all a neat package for moving between computers.  I don't think, though, that this will be a simple matter of copying the library files to the hard drive because the location references might not work

  • Syncing IPhone and Macbook Mail To Do List

Does anyone have a way to sync IPhone and Mail To Do List?

unless you delete your to dos then once checked they will still appear in the to do list alongside the incomplete ones.
one work around is to create smart mailboxes, one for your completed to dos, and one for your the others. to create a smart mailbox, go to mailbox>create smart mailbox, then for the rule, select to dos and then select to dos are complete, to dos are incomplete. once these smart mailboxes are created you can then view your to dos with less cluter.
    hope this helps

  • Got a new Mac, but iTunes on the old Mac still wants to sync my iPhone

    Hi.
I got a new Macbook, and transferred everything from my old one to the new one.
    No problems.
I repurposed the old one as a home theater pc. Created a new user, upgraded to Lion, yada, yada.
iTunes runs 24/7 on the old Macbook, which holds all the music for the family, which we all access using Home Sharing.
Problem is, iTunes on the old Macbook still wants to wi-fi sync my iPhone, which I now sync on my new Macbook.
And when it tries to sync, and I (not knowing what it's doing) move out of wi-fi range, iTunes starts tossing up errors.
There has to be some way to make iTunes on my old Macbook FORGET my iPhone...right?
('Cause if there is, I'm not finding it...)
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Connect the iPhone to your old MacBook via the USB cable that came with the phone and go to the summary tab and uncheck the button next to Syc with this iPhone over Wi-Fi.
    Hope this helps.

  • Want to sync iphone to my itunes account that I use with my ipod

I have recently purchased an iphone 4S and when i switched it on for the first time it came up with a set-up screen.  One of the options was to set it up as a new iphone (new apple ID and password) or to restore from an itunes back-up.  I would like to sync it to my itunes account that I use with my ipod but my laptop is being repaired.  Which option should I choose? - Can I set it up as new iphone (ie new apple ID) and then sync it to my itunes account later or do I need to wait and connect it to my laptop?  It wont let me do anything with the phone until I have finished the set-up..
    Thanks!

Do not set it up with a new Apple ID. You can set up as a new phone but with your old Apple ID. Purchases are specific to an Apple ID.

  • I want to sync IPhone 5 with itunes, but I can't upgrade itunes nor mac os.

I just got the iPhone 5 and I would like to sync it to my itunes to upload music. However, apparently I need to buy the snow leopard os for $200 to do so. I am not willing to pay $200 just to upload music on my phone. There has to be another way to do connect my iphone to itunes. Below are the specifications for my mac.

If you aren't willing to upgrade your MacOS to something newer than about 5 years old, then consider using BootCamp and Windows, then use a Windows version of iTunes.
I personally recommend considering the MacOS update.  I have heard reports that if you call Apple on the phone, you might be able to purchase an upgrade to Snow Leopard for $30.  You could always find a friend who has a Mac with Snow Leopard or newer, and sign onto the Mac App store using your ID (but their computer) to buy a license for Lion or Mountain Lion, then after downloading it, use the Lion disc maker to make a bootable USB key to install the newer (and only $30) OS on your hardware.  With that, you would then qualify to run iTunes 10.7 or even iTunes 11.

  • A friend of mine wants to sync iphone, ipad and desktop (2 AppleIDs)

The problem is that the ApplId on the iphone is different than the one she used on the ipad nd desktop.  If we enter the apple Id from the Ipad into the iphone will iCLoud sync her contacts from the iPhone to the iPad and Desktop??   She has 600 contacts so I really want to be sure before I do anything.
    Thanks

Copy that voice memo, create a new email and paste it and send it to yourself! You can save it to your computer now and send it to someone else

  • I want to sync iphones from two different itunes libraries.

However, im going to another country for studies and wont have my original computer there with me. Is there any way I can sync my iphone with my new computer without erasing everything?

Select all the photos in both albums and order - or make a temp album containing all photos you want to order prints of and select all and order
The easiest way is the second suggestion  --  make a temp album containing all of the photos and select all
