Old iomega drive to use with imac

my neighbors' have an older computer and use a zip drive which uses
a scsi connection. They would like to buy a new computer but are worried about this connection method as the new imacs don't have scsi.
is there an adaptor for this or will we be out of luck.
any help would be appreciated.

Not to be thick, but is there somthing that I am missing here? An old, outdated, slow and expensive storage medium is keeping them from buying a new computer?
Unless they have a device that absolutely has to use Zip disks, get that stuff off the Zip disks and replace them with optical disks or even USB flash drives.
I like Iomega as a company and believe they offer quality products, but their proprietary storage like Jazz, Zip, and on and on are enough to make someone crazy.
Stick with non-proprietary storage in the future. It will save a lot of headaches later.

  • HT201250 Recommendations force external backup drive to use with iMac?

I'm new to Mac, moving from PC which I back up to 2 1TB USB external drives.
Want to set up new Mac with best backup setup--any recommendations?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
What you can do is to keep your PC files on the external drive or transfer your files to your Mac.
If you choose to keep the files on the external drive, get another external drive and use it to make backups of your Mac. There are different applications you can use, but as you are new to Mac, the easiest one is Time Machine, which comes with Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
If you transfer your external drive files to the Mac, you can use that external drive to make backups, so connect the external drive and set up Time Machine by using the link above. Open System Preferences > Time Machine > Select Disk, and choose the external drive.
Another popular application is Carbon Copy Cloner, that makes clones of the hard drive instead. The advantage of clones is that you can start up your Mac from them, thing that Time Machine does not allow you to do. See > http://pondini.org/TM/Clones.html

  • Format external drive for use with both Leopard & XP, & maybe Win7

I want to repurpose one of my old small Firewire drives to use with both Leopard and XP via Boot Camp on my MacBook. It is is 60GB and is currently formatted with MacOS Extended Journaled, and Apple Partition Map. I don't think I will have any need at the present time to store files of more than 4GB on it (most of the ones I want to store are no more than a few hundred MB each).
Is using FAT32 with Master Boot Record adequate? Up until now I have just used flash drives for external Windows storage, but I would like to consolidate lots of topographic maps files onto this one Firewire drive instead of using multiple flash drives, and use these files with both Leopard and XP. If I want to try Windows 7 in the future via either Boot Camp or virtualization, will there be a problem with FAT32/MBR?

    Hi,
using FAT32 as file system and MBR as partition table should work just fine with OSX and all Windows versions up to 7.
And since your files don't come close to 4GB single-file-size, that FAT32 limitation is no hinderance.
Use Disk Utility to do this, since Windows won't format partitions/drives with more than 32GB to FAT32 (built-in limitation).
Nonetheless it can use such partitions (I have a 200GB on my external HD).

  • Fastest and best external hard disks for video use with Imac?

What is the fastest and best external hard disks for video use with Imac (I believe it is currently not possible to use Esata on the Imac).

For DVCam. HDV etc, I'm a fan of the G-raid drives. From personal experience they
are very solid performers. I only had one issue with a new drive that was replaced
next day. They are not the cheapest drives to be found but the build quality
    is excellent. Check out:

  • What external dvd drive is compatible with IMAC with optical drive

what external drive is compatiblee with IMAC with optical driv

As far as my experience goes I have had all external dvd drives work throu USB, the USB stands for Universal Seriel Bus and that means the drives are already in the device, so you can probably just go to best buy or to new egg and order a cheap one.
If you have usb 3.0 I would go with that since its one of the faster ones and you will save money on using a thunder bolt device, and trust me a $17 dvd player works just as good as a $120 dvd player.

Yes. Windows supports external USB drives.

  • Is Time Machine something that I can back up to in a separate particle of my new MacBook Pro or do I need an external drive to use with it?

.....ie we have Seagate external drives but both have Windows files on them, although plenty of room. Am I able to keep the Windows files on them and back up to them with Time Machine on new MacBook Pro? Don't understand....and not very clear. Thanks
    Belinda

    Belinda,
In order to use Time Machine the external volume must be formatted in Disk Utility as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". You can't use a drive that is formatted to be used for both a Mac and a Windows unit (exFAT, etc.). You should purchase a new external drive to use with Time Machine and never let your work go for over a week with hooking up to the TM drive and allow Time Machine to do it's thing.

  • Perfect Hard Drive To Use With Time Machine?

    Hi,
Has anyone found out what's the perfect External Hard Drive to use with Time Machine?
I have experience with a few of WD's My Book models (Essential, Pro and Studio). The problem with all of them is that they automatically keep switching themselves off (spin down) and on (spin up) throughout the day, in an effort to save power. But it's actually quite annoying. The My Book drive will automatically turn itself off, and then turn back on again within the space of one minute. Also, going to use Spotlight (even if you've excluded Time Machine Backups from being indexed) will automatically prompt the My Book drive to turn back on, which introduces a small delay to using Spotlight.
Does anyone make an External Hard Drive, with a Firewire 400 or 800 connection, that stays on ALL the time and doesn't automatically make decisions about when it should spin down or spin up?

I'am using a 500Gb Freecom Pro Hard Drive connected on USB via my Cinema Display. I so forget about it that I often forget to disconnect it from my laptop before leaving the office... Never complained about it
Btw, it does not implements the energy saver Auto turn off/on feature which I don't need cause the time it could mostly be really useful is by night. As it stops when I disconnect the USB and start again when I connect it back.. this is perfect to me.
I must say I'm quite happy with every Freecom product I bought and this one certainly don't break the rule

  • Partitioning an External 320gb drive for use with Time Machine and...

I want to be able to use my Western Digital 320GB external drive for use with Time Machine and to use as extra storage space on both my Mac and when I boot into Windows Vista.
    Is this possible?
I was playing around in Disk Utility and would I partition the part I want to use for Time Machine with the Mac OS Journaled, and whatever I want as space for windows, use a MS - DOS format?
    Has anyone done this before?
    Cheers-

Unless you are using 64 bit version of MSWindows (64 bit XP/Vista), it won't be able to handle a disk with GUID partition table (GPT). Disks with Apple Partition Map (APM) or GUID partition table are the only ones that Time Machine will work with (not MBR disks). Note also that the MBR/APM/GPT are at the DISK level and not the partition level, so don't mix the format with partitioning scheme. Time Machine disks are meant to live in the Mac universe (for now, anyway) and sharing with the MSWindows 32-bit universe is not possible.

  • Best speed External Hard Drive to use with Final Cut Pro X ?

    Hey all
I'm looking at getting a new USB 2.0 external hard drive to use with FCPX, I was wondering what everyones thoughts were on minimum speeds and what everyone else uses.
I am looking at least 1-2TB.

I will warn you now that I am somewhat of a lone voice on these forums for recommending USB 2.0s.
I have used the 7,200rpm types with their own mains supply over the last 6 years (and exclusively for the last 3) and had no problems of any kind.
Having said that I am not a pro with tight schedules (or underwear!) but I have used DV, HDV, AVCHD with and without ProRes and AIC.
Most of my projects are short though I have done a number of 2 hour projects with comparatively simple editing and a few effects etc. One ongoing project has some 12 hours of DV which I dip into  occasionally.
I have a couple of LaCie FW HDs which I stopped using a couple of years ago in favour of the much cheaper USB 2.0s and didn't notice any difference, though as I said I don't have pro time constraints.
Now is not the best time to buy HDs cheaply as the autumn floods in Asia knocked out many of the main suppliers, prices doubled overnight and have still not got back to last summers figures (2TB WD Essential £69 with free delivery).
    Look at the price now!

  • Best drive to use with k8n Platinum?

Need to know the fastest drive to use with this board. I'm sort of confused about the different types of interfaces i.e. scsi, IDE, and SATA.

    Sampson,
Nowadays all modern ATA and SATA drives in the marked have reached the Performance  limitation opposed by the HDD Technology (electromechanic disk drives)...
....performance differences are in the range of few mseconds between different manufacturers and don't really matter, just for marketing purposes if you catch my drift...
There are more important characteristics these days describing HDDs other than performance.
Like reliability, capacity and bug/GB figures.
Taking the vast amount of media and other torrents floating in the net i would go definitely for the largest capacity and bug/GB and good reliability and less for performance.
So if i would tomorrow go and buy a HDD i would go for this beauty here,

  • What is a good external hard drive for use with a macbook air?

I am looking at purchasing a macbook air 13". What is a good external hard drive to use with it? Should I look for an external hard drive with its own a/c power or is the usb 3.0 capable of powering the external drive.

Have a look here for the sizes and prices.
It is however, much better to get a USB external drive that comes with it's own power adapter to avoid issues when or if your USB port can't supply enough power to your external drive.
That issue however does happen rarely but it does happen.  Especially when connecting other devices to your other USB port while your external hard drive is connected to your other usb port.

  • 2 Firewire drives got errors since used with iMac C2D

    HI
i get this when i start Disk Utilities
    Verify and Repair disk “Projects”
    Invalid Volume Header
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
Start repairing it , says repaired but refuses to mount the drives!
And on the second drive i get this:
    Verify and Repair disk “disk2s3”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid B-tree node size
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
    Anyone know a solution?
Both 750GB drives which never had these problems until used with this iMac a week ago.

So i repaired my Disk called "PROJECT"
    Verify and Repair disk “Projects”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
The volume Projects appears to be OK.
    1 HFS volume checked
    No repairs were necessary
    However, it refuses to mount!
And when i run the Disk Utilities on the Volume, i get this still:
    Verify and Repair disk “Projects”
    Invalid Volume Header
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
