Old iphone as ipod

I'm upgrading to the new iphone 3GS today and I want to know if I can still use my original iphone just for games and an ipod without service on it.

Has been asked countless times in here.
Standard answer:
Leave SIM in the phone (as new one will come with one).
Once new one is activated with number your other SIM will deactivate thus no cell service but you need it in there to keep phone working (and for updates).
So it will keep working like an iPod Touch.

Problems with old iPhone as iPod

I've been using an old iPhone as an iPod for the last 2-3 months. I've been using iMessages on it and it has been working fine up until today. All of a sudden not getting any iMessages on it. I tried turning off iMessages and then back on...didn't work. I did a hard reboot...didn't work. What can I do to get it working again?

Hi there, I hope someone can help.
I have the iphone 5 and lent my daughter my old iphone 4 as she had her's stolen. Her contract came up for renewal and she has a new iphone now and consequently has given me back my my old iphone 4. My question is: as she has now wiped the phone of any information, will I be able to set up and re-use it as an ipod with my information. I do not want to jeopardise anything being removed from my current iphone 5 by re-activating my old phone. Can this be done??

Old iPhone as iPod Touch. There's a "1" badge on the phone icon

I'm setting up my old iPhone 3G to give to my dad as an iPod Touch. I erased the content, activated it, and now there's a badge on the phone icon indicating 1 voicemail message. Any way to clear this?

Update: I took the sim card out and the badge went away. I put the sim card back in and I get a "New Voicemail" alert and the badge comes back. I'm going to visit the local mall tomorrow and talk to the folks at the Apple Store and the AT&T store.
In the meantime, any ideas on clearing a voicemail alert from a phone with no service?
Plan B, do I take the sim card out and tell my dad to put it back in if he wants to update or restore the phone?
Plan C, tell dad "it's a free iphone/ipod, deal with a little red circle"?

Issues using old iPhone as iPod

I updated my old iphone to use as an iPod, but once i reset it and tried to activate it, it says activation servers temporarily unavailable. What do i need to do? By the way, I do not have a sim card for it since I am using it as an iPod.

My father recently cancelled his iPhone 3G contract and went back to a regular phone, and he converted his 3G into an iPod touch. At the same time, he got a deactivated SIM card for his old Original iPhone; however, when we plug in the original iPhone into iTunes, its asking us to set up the phone as a new AT&T phone again.
My question is, if we go ahead and set it up with his wireless number, will it charge us $30 for the data plan again even though its technically a deactivated SIM and all we are doing is activating it so the phone stops bugging us to connect to iTunes?

iPhone 2G + Deactivated SIM asks for setup as new phone on AT&T (but we don't want to set it up as a new phone)

You obviously don't understand what I provided.
Why are you inserting a SIM card in the first place if you want to use the iPhone as an iPod Touch? Not using the iPhone since it was deactivated 2 years ago or regardless when it was deactivated doesn't require inserting a SIM card in order to sync the iPhone with iTunes or use the iPhone as an iPod Touch.
If you are trying to install a firmware update or restore the iPhone with iTunes (which installs the current firmware) without activating the iPhone, you need to insert the no longer activated SIM card that was used with the iPhone when it was activated in order to complete the process. There is no way around this. If you activate the iPhone, it is no different from activating any other iPhone.

I have two old 3G iphones. One still lets me connect to itunes and use it as an ipod. The other goes back into AT&T activation when I connect it to itunes.
I didnt remove the sims and I have zero interest in learning how to jailbreak it.
The rep at the apple store said all I have to do is plug it in to itunes and it will still recognize it.
This only worked on one. Is something wrong with the other?

Take the SIM card out of it. I got a 3s from my sister to use as an ipod touch and it did not want to sync properly on itunes and it kept trying to find a signal. Once I took the SIM card out of it & put it on airplane mode it works just like an ipod touch. Hope that helps

Well, I have an old iPhone 3GS and soon enough this 4 will be retired as well. That being said I know that both of these devices are still quite worthy of use in various functions. I wouldn't get anything for turning them back into the store and I hope to re-use them in a different way. So my question is could I use my old phones to boost ram temporarily on my computer? I haven't found too many helpful resources for repurposing old iPhones and I love the devices.

I'm tired of wasting battery on my iPhone 4 to listen to music, so I wanted to use my old iPhone 3GS as an iPod. I read you had to have a sim card inserted in the phone, regardless if it's activated. So I put the old one inside, but when I connect it to my computer, it won't charge, or sync with iTunes. It's definitely not my charger because both of my phones charge in a wall outlet, and my iPhone 4 charges through the computer. Just not the iPhone 3GS.... I'm going on vacations with long car rides and would like to use this. Help please!
