Old Iphone, no SIM, tried to upgrade now bricked

I searched here for this exact issue but found nothing that matched, if it has been asked and answered, my apologies.
Got my 3G up and running. Old phone had SIM removed for new. I tried to upgrade the old Iphone to 2.0 and it is now bricked. 911 service etc only.
Backed up all info, phone rebooted and now nothing.
Anyone know how to get this working? Any help is greatly appreciated, I am sure this is a super busy place right now!

I upgraded my original iPhone to 2.0 before I purchased an iPhone 3G. When I purchased the iPhone 3G I was told at the Apple store that I could use the original iPhone as an iPod Touch but that I should remove the old SIM. Wisely, however, I decided not to throw it away. When 2.0.1 came along, I attempted to upgrade without a SIM in my old phone and I was bricked. However, I put the old SIM back in the phone and everything worked again. The phone said is would take a while to activate and I was a bit worried that this would deactivate my new 3G phone. So I unplugged from iTunes and everything was fine with both phones. This time, however, I left the SIM in the old phone. When 2.0.2 came along I allowed iTunes to upgrade but it appeared to brick my phone even with the old SIM in place. However, just to give it a try, I unplugged the phone and plugged it back into iTunes and, as before, all functionality returned. I now happily use the original iPhone at home in airplane mode with wifi on; and the 3G phone when I leave the house. This works perfectly since I don't have a usable AT&T signal at home. I'm probably foolish but I somehow think that I am saving the battery on the new phone by using the old phone at home.
p.s. I think that the reason that the old SIM card works (rather than a new one) is because it is assigned to an active phone number even though the SIM card itself is supposedly inactive. At least I was told it was inactive as soon as the new phone was activated. However, I have not tried to make calls with the old phone (or its SIM) since activating the SIM in the new phone. I do find it a bit frustrating that, even though Apple and AT&T said that one could use the old phone as an iPod Touch, there appears to be a lot of confusion regarding the ground rules for doing this. I do have Apple Care for the original iPhone (until June 29, 2009). So if it truly got bricked at some point, I would take it into the Genius Bar.

Try popping out the SIM card and turn off the phone.
Pop in the SIM card once again and turn on the phone, make sure that the SIM card is placed and seated perfectly in the tray!
Tell me how did you unlock your phone!?

It sounds like maybe 8.0.1 has downloaded onto your phone but not installed. You can check for it in Settings > General > Usage > Storage, Manage Storage. If it's there you should see it at the top of the list of apps. Swipe to delete it. 8.0.1 was pulled by Apple quickly after it was introduced due to issues and replaced by 8.0.2. Once it's deleted you should be able to download and install 8.0.2.

Thanks.  I have followed all the instructions as recommended and nothing has worked so it looks like the restore/update may have been interrupted - would loss of internet connection do this?
Yes it would, possibly even brick it.
Have successfully connected my ipod nano with iTunes so looks like the device driver is working.
Can I use my ipod nano USB connector to check?
It is not much help to you, since the device that you need still not recognized.
Anyway looks like I may have to swallow the loss of data.  Have set-up a call for tomorrow with Apple support so will wait until after this before doing the factory restore!
Good luck, but if you expect miracle from that call good luck again.

  • Installing 2.0 on a old iphone afer sim is remove

Can you still install 2.0 on a old iphone that has been upgraded. The phone does not have a SIM card. Is there a charge for the software?

Yes, actually i just had the same problem... I destroyed my sim, then wanted to update to have iTunes tell me no!! Just hold down the home button and the sleep/wake button until the phone restarts. Keep holding it down until it shows the cable > iTunes logo, you should be able to restore from there!

  • Old Iphone synced to Macbook pro, upgraded to 3.2.1

I have a new Macbook pro, then I wanted to download our pics to the laptop. It prompts an upgrade to this 3.2.1 upgrade. Then an tragedy happened, we lost all apps. Th iphone can be called in and texted but the screensaver is an ITunes logo and the USB connector. When we slide the bottom arrow, the dial screen appears. And that is it. What can we do to restore everything for our iphone? We remembered that we were told that our old iphone CANNOT be upgraded.

Apps can be downloaded again for free: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519 and 3rd party data is included in your latest backup: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
When you restore your phone, it will be detected as "original iphone" and the latest firmware for your phone will be installed, although the version might be 3.1.2, you might not get all the features because of missing hardware on your phone.

  • Tried software upgrade now nothing works

I bought a new 12" G4 powerbook a couple of weeks ago and yesterday i let the automatic software upgrade do its thing...
it downloaded quite a few of the updates but then the updater crashed with the options to report, reopen or cancel. I tried all three at some point during the day but the report and cancel were the only ones to work.
Then i noticed that ALL applications I tried to open (other than msn messenger which works fine) also crashed with the same message to reopen, report etc.
I dont know the workings of a mac inside out to be able to work out whats happening. I looked at various logs and all they said was that this application or that application crashed.
I looked for a restore to previous set up type option (like...dare i say.... windows has) but couldnt find anything like that either.
(im currently on my old powerbook with half the keyboard missing and a screen that wont stay up)
Does anyone have any idea what happened? Will i have to reinstall everything to its original basic set up or what?

The first thing I'd do is get a Firewire hard drive and Prosoft Data Rescue. At least that will make an effort to recover your data, without writing anything to disk. Once that is done, an Archive and Install may be an option as scb suggests, though there are some gray screen troubleshooting steps suggested in this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
The reason I suggest doing the Data Rescue first, is there is no way of knowing how severe the corruption is on the drive, and any writing to a drive in a temperamental state may overwrite already poorly allocated data. Data Rescue usually can see through that mess and grab out all the important data you may want to backup.
