Old iPhone Stolen - no cellular account, can it still be erased?

Old iPhone was just stolen out of my car - is used for iPod and some app functions when in wi-fi range, but still has a lot of various information on it - emails, etc.
There is no cellular account as that was switched over to the new phone - I've since gone to Find My iPhone to have the phone erased, but am unlear as to whether this can occur without a cellular plan, or can it erase when connected to a wifi network, or some other connection???
Wondering how much I should worry about the info on the phoneand if I need to start changing passwords, etc....

Thanks - I did not have passcode enabled on that phone - am changing my email passwords currently.
Sounds like if the phone is connected to a WiFi network it will be erased?
