Old IPhone USB cord not recognized when syncing

I am hoping to use my old original IPhone as an IPod. However, I cannot get it to sync because the USB cord is not recognized on the computer. I have tried it many times and on different computers. It will not sync or download photos. Can anyone help with the problem of the USB. I do not know why USB will not work. I purchased a new USB from Belkin at the Apple Store and have my original USB cord as well. I do not have any idea which of these devices could be faulty if it is the IPhone or the USB cord. Thanks, issue is hopfully just the cable. I have recently learned that re-furbed and pre-owned are different. And that pre-owned warranty dates do not start over with date of purchase. I recently upgraded and ordered a 16G 3GS that I found out is pre-owned. Which means my warranty date is a month off. Dont feel very comfortable with having a device that was previously owned and not re vamped. I was told that they just polish them up and put them back into box, and then re-sell. I would have spent an extra fifty dollars to get a new one if I knew that is the way it worked. I was uninformed. Could issue be with bad device? Do they go through verification to ensure that there is no issue with them?

Is the iPod Touch specifically stated as being compatible? Have you tried to perfrom a hard reset of the iPod with it still connected? To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

USB Device Not Recognized when Iphone connected to PC

Hello,
Every time I connect my Iphone 4S to my PC I get the error "USB Device Not Recognized". I did not have this problem before. I tried uninstalling Itunes and all its components and reninstalling it, restaring my computer, restarting Iphone and I even reset all the setting on my Iphone. I connected my wife's Iphone 4 using the same cable and PC and connected and started syncing with Itunes right away. If anyone has any pointers on how to fix this problem, any help will be much appreciated.

try reseting the phone
RESET DEVICE
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for device to restart (no data will be lost).

"USB Device not Recognized" when shuffle is plugged into computer

Everytime I plug my shuffle into my Dell laptop it comes up with the message "USB device not recognized". The shuffle doesn't show up in my computer or itunes. I've done some of things that it says to try, but I'd really like to get this fixed and get my shuffle working. Typically when I plug it in, it blinks once, yellow/orange, and then no more, and the notice comes up on the computer screen. If this makes a difference, the shuffle worked fine until last summer when my hard drive crashed. Upon installing a new hard drive, the shuffle began to not work/sync with my computer as it had been before. Any suggestions on how to get my shuffle working again? Much appreciated!

Also you might try forcing the iPod into disk mode first, then connecting it to your computer and see if that makes it show up in iTunes...

USB device not recognized when in Win XP

When I plug my Ipod touch into the computer via the cable, I get an error message
"USB device not recognized". I've tried to delete and reload Itunes, I've reset the Ipod and reset all the original settings. I've tried several of the USB ports and also tried 3 different cords for the Ipod. Can anyone help me??? I can get it to plug into my daughter's computer at her house, but not on my computer... this is getting frustrating!

Thanks for welcoming me... wish I didn't have to come on here though... I wish the IPod(1st gen) was working well. I just downloaded the new Itunes 8.2.1 on my computer when this started. My son-in-law's IPod (2nd gen)plugs in and is acknowledged just fine, for mine, even when I bit the bullet and decided to erase the whole thing and start anew, is still telling me "USB device not recognized". Very frustrating. So it's not only not connecting to my computer, it's now erased. Before I could at least play games, can't do anything now... (sigh)

When I plug my ipod into my laptop I get the message: "USB device not recognized." It says the device has malfunctioned!!! If I click on this error message it says my ipod is an unknown device and no drivers are installed for it???
It was working fine until a few days ago. If i reset it I can charge it up but that's all, it still does not appear in itunes or on my computer.

ok my question is do you have a mac or windows based laptop
here is why and what happened to my ipod mini
my ipod mini was connected to my macintosh charging while i was using my imac and it came up with a system update 10.4.3 i installed it and finished installing it and afterwards my apple wouldn't recongnize my ipod mini or even display it one the screen i found out by myself that when the apple update got to the end of the update it installed new hard drive drivers but also installed the drivers on the ipod mini which locked out the mini's internal hard drive and my mini then stop responding it would play music and charge but wouldn't connect to the computer
so what i did to fix it was this
i went into utilites in mac os x tiger or any version of os x has this and selected disk utility you will notice that the ipod will appesr in disk utility but not on the desktop this is due to a recent system update driver that isn't compatible with the internal drive on the ipod mini so in disk utility just select format the drive in a mac os partition standard works the best it will then format the ipod and the ipod will apear in the desktop again but not as a ipod let me explain when you format the ipod using the disk utility it formats and even erases the firmware of of the hard drive on the mini so when you are done formating the ipod run the ipod updater to reinstall the ipod's operating system and presto your ipod will now work again
warning: i don't know how to fix this on a ipod in windows so if this is a windows based laptop you need to find someone witha macintosh to do this with sorry

Computer says usb/device not recognized when plugged in??

When I plug in my sons ipod nano 7th generation, just recently says usb/device not recognized and doesn't light up when plugged into the wall either??? Any suggestions??

This came from another thread, but worked for me. Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62. Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Divice Support, and Apple Software Update). Reboot, and reinstall iTunes. It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano. Good luck.

i am sorry to say but there is no way to undo a software update to go back you have to go threw your phone provider and have then do a replacement on the phone and just not do the update. when they receive the phone they will send it off for testing and to have the bugs fixed

USB CORD NOT RECOGNIZED!!

When i downloaded/upgraded the new itunes my USB cord suddenly stopped working.So then i got a new cord but it still doesnt work.The new and old cords both still charge with the wall pluggins but not on the computer.So my guess is somethings wrong with the computer,not the cords..WHAT DO I DO!

USB device not recognized when I connect ipad to computer??

I haven't had a need to connect it in quite some time, so I don't know what's going on, but my adapter is MIA at the moment, so I figured I'd just connect it to the computer to charge it, but when I plug it in, my computer won't recognize it anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this?

Most USB ports n computers do not provide enough power to charge an iPad. You need to use the wall charger and plug that into a known good wall outlet.
The iPad will not show up on your computer like a hard drive. Start iTunes on your computer and plug your iPad into the USB port on the computer. You should see the iPad recognized in iTunes.

USB Device Not Recognized when direct to computer, works through hub

I have a rather bizarre problem (which I've already written about on Tom's Hardware) regarding my Samsung Galaxy S III phone and my ThinkPad T440p. At first I thought it was just a driver issue, but now it seems to be more hardware-related.
As I explained in my other post, the phone works (in both Windows 7 and Linux) when plugged in through a USB hub, but not when connected directly to the computer. My computer is still under warranty (thank goodness), but I'd like to avoid sending it in if possible, as it's my only computer.

I just tried plugging another Samsung phone in with my USB cable and it has the same problem. If I plug it in with another cable though, it works. I use the same cable with my phone and nothing happens. No charging, nothing. At least with my "bad" cable it charges and the computer complains about it.
At this point I'll get another "Samsung USB cable" (supposed to work, eh?) and see what my luck is. This cable is less than a year old though. I already replaced the original. Maybe Samsung went too cheap again... It wouldn't be the first time. Their push buttons fail left and right.

Getting 'USB device not recognized' message when I never did before.

I am constantly getting a USB device not recognized when I plug in my nano. I never got this before and as a result all it does is charge. It is not showing up in iTunes anymore so I cannot remove or dowload new songs on to my nano anymore. I have tried to go into control panel and the USB Hub device manager to deselect the power outage option but that did nothing. Please help! I seem to encounter trouble with any accessories Apple sell, whether they be earphones or USB cables.

my ipod is nearly about 1 year old.
i use my ipod nano 2GB for music and as a flashdrive to store my uni work.
this morning accessing my files in the ipod on the computer was fine.
then later in the afternoon when i connected it into a computer i keep getting the msg 'usb device not recognised'. also itunes dont recognise my ipod either anymore.
i use Windows XP at home and uni.
i've tried my ipod on at least three different computers at uni and just tried at home.
same msg came up 'unknown device' from windows.
i've read the other posts in the forum and it mentioned about 5 R's and resetting it.
BUT the main problem is i DONT have any back up of my uni work and files and they are really really important so i CANT reset the ipod otherwise i will lose all the important things...my assignments, projects, photos...I was meant to make a back up b4 i start uni next monday but i guess now is TOO LATE.
I've noticed that the socket of the ipod dock conector to usb cable, that connects to the ipod is slightly split open.
Would this be causing the problem?
I am in Utter Despair and Desperation at the moment.
Can anyone help me PLEASE?

3G iPod Touch "USB device not recognized" on any PC

My 3G been working fine for 1+ yr. Running iTunes 10 on a WinXP system; latest OS (4.2.1?) everything was up to date and working fine. One day I get "USB device not recognized" when I hook it to the PC. Also, when connected to a charger, I don't get the battery screen. It charges either way, but slowly.
I visited the local Apple store & the guru checked it on her system, with same results. I just reset it, hoping for a miracle, but it still isn't recognized.

Hi Che-Che. I'm having what looks like the same problem. Cannot get this iPod Touch 4th Gen to be recognized on any computer. When I use the white Apple cord that came with it, absolutely nothing happens. Not a sign of being recognized or not being recognized. I brought a third party cable made by Scohche and it is made for iPod, but at least the computer acts like it is starting to load the USB driver, then it fails. The other cable you are talking about, was it an Apple cable? I'm leaning towards it being a faulty Apple cable.
