Old iPhoto library into new iPhoto

Ok, to begin with let me apologise in advance for how this question is written. I am not the most savvy person when it comes to this type of thing but I am trying, I promise. So, I'm on my second MacBook Pro because my old one died a death after 5 years (and a toddlers intervention), a helpful guy at at Apple store got the harddrive out for me (a shiny piece of silver) which he said held all of my photos and music - the only two things I was worried about. With the help of this drive type thing that I plug this harddrive into, I was able to move across all of my music onto my new MacBook Pro but knowing that my photos would be a bigger job, I left that until I had more time. Well, I have just attempted to do this and it simply wont. It says its something to do with versions numbers. I can drag the library from the old harddrive (just the whole thing as I don't know if there is a specific sub-file that I need) onto my new desktop but when I think try to drag the old library into my new iPhoto, it simply wont read it. I have no idea what my old version number is but it would be pretty old, perhaps last updated 2-3 years ago. My new iPhoto library is version 9.2.3.
In short - what is this girl doing wrong? Please tell me I haven't lost all of my old photos forever? The man in the store said it was fairly straight forward, he could have migrated things at the time but I didn't buy my new MacBook Pro until a week later and my old harddrive had already been removed. All I want to do is have all my old photos with my new photos in one place, I am not worried about any tags or names or faces or place information that is saved with the old photos as I really only use it for a storage type place instead of utilising all the cool options (I should, I know) so if there is an easy way that your Grandma would be able to manage, please let me know.

You don't have to drag the library to the iPhoto icon. You have to double-click the iPhoto library to open iPhoto with it, and then, you should be able to access to the photos of your library. I recommend you to copy the iPhoto library to a different folder before doing this, because iPhoto will upgrade the library to make it work with your version, and if this fails, you will lose all your photos

I have an iphoto library saved onto an external h/d from a G5 with 100's of photos.
I now have a new machine and want to change the iphoto library to be on my external drive , which has my previous Iphoto library on it, with my new machine.

Do you want the library on the external HD to stay on the external HD? If so just launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when askec, opt to choose a library. Navigate to the external HD and select the library there.
Then if you want to get the pictures, if any, from the library that is in the Pictures folder you can:
1- open the external HD library with iPhoto and open the library in the Pictures folder and drag the Originals folder into the open iPhoto window.
2 - use iPhoto Library Manager to move the events and albums from the library in the Pictures folder to the one on the external HD. This will preserve any keywords and comments you might have assigned them.
If you want the big library in your Pictures folder then rename the one in the Pictures folder and copy the external HD library in there with it. Then use one of the two methods above to move the photos from the small library into the large one.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. Problem importing old iphoto library into new computer

SO I ORIGIONALLY WROTE THIS TOPIC:
"Ok so I just bought a new macbook pro with iphoto 08 and i want to transfer my pictures from my old Imac with im guessing iphoto 06 and all the albums to my new computer. How do i do this. I tried it once but i did it wrong because i only got the pictures over there but no albums so i deleted them on the new computer and am ready to try again"
THEN I GOT THIS RESPONSE:
Quit iPhoto, copy the entire iPhoto library as a single entity from the old computer into the pictures folder on the new computer and launch iPhoto on the new computer - it will convert (a one way conversion) the library as needed and you will be set.
SO I DID THAT AND THE PHOTOS ARE THERE ON THE HARD DRIVE BUT WHEN I OPEN IPHOTO THERE IS NOTHING THERE

Have you checked the size of the copied library to make sure it's a valid one. To be sure you're opening the correct library launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, select the option to choose a library. Navigate to your pictures folder and select the library to copied over from your old iMac.
If your sure that's the library from the old iMac and it doesn't indicate any photos try the following in order as needed:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
2 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:

1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos.

Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.

How to Import My Entire Photo Library into New iPhoto 11

I just got a new laptop and want to move all of my photos from my old Macbook Pro with iPhoto 09 to my new laptop with iPhoto 11. Should I do it via a backup on my time capsule or will I loose all my folders and events? I tried to drag and drop like I did with my music and it will not work. I also tried the migration assistant and it did not come over with the applications, nor did my documents...

This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

How do I fix orientation of photos after they were changed after importing iPhoto library into new Photo app in Yosemite?

When I switched over to the new Photos app in Yosemite v10.10.3 and imported my iPhoto library to it, random photos in my library had their orientation changed. Some are upside down and some are turned on their side. I have a huge photo library, so this is frustrating. Hoping I don't have to go in and fix each one. I tried rebuilding my library by lauching Photo holding down option+command, but that didn't fix anything. Please help! Mahalo!

You do not have duplicate albums or photos.

These photos are also placed in the Photo Stream to be synced with your computer and/or with another iOS 5 device. Photos/videos in the Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.
All photos transferred from your computer via the iTunes sync process are stored in the iPhone's Photo Library. The photos in the folders or albums below include a pointer to the original photos stored in the Photo Library. The photos are not duplicated taking up double the storage space. This way you can view the photos in a particular folder or album below only by selecting the folder or album, or you can view all photos in all folders or albums be selecting Photo Library.
This cannot be changed.
Removing photos or folders/albums of photos from your iPhone that were transferred from your computer via the Tunes process is done in the same way - via the iTunes sync process.

How to get old itunes library into new computer

imported my itunes folder into my new computer's users music folder via firewire. i had already pulled over itunes music folder. why don't any songs show up in itunes? if i go through the finder i can drill down to the individual track to play. and i can go to itunes > file > library > import and add each song, one at a time. not happening.
i can't find a thread with a clear instruction on this on the forum either.
what am i missing?

That was not the problem. Don't rename the iTunes music folder.
The iTunes music folder is inside the iTunes folder.
The /Music/iTunes/ folder is the entire library.

Get old Aperture library into iPhoto without need to upgrade Aperture first?

I've my photo libraries in an old Aperture format. I didn't upgrade to Aperture 3, because I didn't get a new Mac until recently. Now with Yosemite my old Aperture app can't be installed anymore (neither old iPhoto). So I've not an old Aperture library file which I'd like to import into the new iPhoto, but I get the dialog that I've to upgrade to Aperture 3 first.
Do I really have to purchase a $80 upgrade to get my pictures out of an old version of Aperture? I'd upgrade to Aperture 3 and continue using it if it wasn't already announced to be discontinued soon. But what to do until the new Photo.app is available some time in 2015, plus who knows whether the announced "will be able to import Aperture libraries" isn't also limited to Aperture 3+ versions?
You see my pickle?! I can't run old Aperture on Yosemite, I can't import my old Aperture library into the new iPhoto and Photo.app isn't available yet. What to do?
The option to run an old OS X via VMWare, import Aperture to old iPhoto and then upgrade to new iPhoto also seems a bit much work.
What I am looking for would essentially be a "Import Aperture 2 library into (new) iPhoto" script/tool/converter.

you can get the original photos out by copying the masters folder and importing to iPhoto
And yes there is no good solution for switching from a outdated software package to a different up to date one - Aperture or pretty much any other software - iPhoto will update all old iPhoto libraries and Aperture will update all old Aperture libraries but iPhoto will not update old Apertue libraries nor will Aperture update old iPhoto libraries

I recently bought a new imac. I transferred my iphoto library from my old mac to an external hard drive. Then, I imported that library to iphoto '11. After, my library ballooned to over 19,000 photos with tons of duplicates and triplicates.
Any idea what I did wrong? Any ideas how I can fix the problem?

Yes and yes
1 - NEVER import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - it does not work and creates massive duplications of photos - two or three different versions of each photo
2 - you simply move your iPhoto library to the new machine and let iPhoto open and upgrade it - so delete the iPhoto library on your new machine that you imported into (do not empty the trash until you complete the transfer) and Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) or use a external drive to transfer the library and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.
if you want to use the old library on the external drive with an older version be careful not to upgrade it as there is no way to go back

My wife and I are fulltime RVers. She happens to be a much better photographer than I am. I want to move some of her photos (with her permission, of course) from her iPhoto library into my iphoto library to use on our blog. Both libraries are on the same computer though under different use logins. Thanks in advance forr your help.

Just purchased new iMac and am trying to import my old iPhoto library, but keep getting Unreadable Files message. I have the library file and see that it shows up as an iPhoto Library under the Kind column.

Now that you're tried to open the correct library once see if you can perfor the following: apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.

Unable to open previous iPhoto library on new Mac

Wondering if anyone can help... Having copied my old iPhoto Library (from OS 10.6), I've tried various methods to open in new iPhoto (running OS 9) with all photos still organised into events.
1. Replacing iPhoto Library: User > Pictures > iPhoto Library, doesn't recognise photos at all
2. Reading iPhoto Library from file on external HD
3. Holding down alt key, on opening iPhoto Library and pointing to old Library, doesn't recognise image files. But then…
I actioned ‘Rebuild Library’ and had some success, I can see jumbled images, without Events data - though many images were duplicated after being enhanced (rotated).
Is there a fool proof way other than how I’ve tried, to export all photos form old iPhoto Library, with events data remaining intact and not duplicating lots of images? Is iPhoto Library Manager the best software for Mac that will sort through and find /delete ‘similar' images?
Appreciate all tried and tested suggestions, as this is about 5 years+ worth of images…

Having copied my old iPhoto Library (from OS 10.6),
What version of iPhoto last used that library before you copied it over? Are you currently running iPhoto 9.5 1? If your previous iPhoto verson was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier read Note 2 below.
This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks. It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
Note 1: every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.
Note 2: If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1.
If the above does not apply try the following on a new copy of your original library:

1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 - select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.

I can't upload or import videos from my iphoto library, into final cut pro x. When i click, IMPORT MEDIA in FCP, It lists iPhoto Library as GRAY, and will not let me access it. I need the videos out of there. I have tried every way I can think of.

I have also tried from the iphoto side, to export the videos or share them to final cut. I have had no luck.
I have tried to drag and drop indidual video clips from iphoto to fcp, and the programs simply do not respond to each other
I can see in the OLDER version of final cut pro x, where it has IMPORT FILES as an option, it was possible. I see this on forums and youtube videos of the older versions.
However, the newer version that i have, does not have IMPORT 'FILES' as an option, it is simply all lumped together as IMPORT 'MEDIA'

at the end, you say "import preferences", which program are you describing?
So im safer using footage that is remotely being pulled from iphoto...
vs
using footage that is imported into FCP from imovie?
Is there anything i can do in fcp to make this footage more reliable or safer or more stable as i pull remotely from iphoto?
All the footage, and all the libraries to all programs, or on a new pegasus 12tb raid 5 setup fyi.

IPhoto library into Aperture 3

I am currently importing my iPhoto 9 library into Aperture 3. When I pressed import, i was told it would take up 75gb of disc space, so I assume it is creating a duplicate of my iPhoto library.
So, I dont really want the two libraries, so can I delete ( or rather move to an external hard drive the original iphoto library?
Will I lose any data or does Aperture create a whole new library?

When you import the default will probably be to store the photos in Aperture's library. This will make a copy of your photos and is called "Managed masters" in Aperture. As long as this what happens when you import, you will then definitely have 2 of each photo that you imported. It's not going to duplicate your iPhoto library per se (the library is a database that contains all the pictures and other goodies). Rather, it will copy each photo from your iPhoto library into a new library (the Aperture one).
You can also have Aperture use "Referenced" masters, by doing what gordonbmac indicated. In this case, Aperture does not manage the location of your masters. They will be wherever iPhoto has them. This may or may not be good depending on what you are going to do with your iPhoto library after. I.e., if you play with iPhoto and rearrange things, Aperture doesn't know that you moved the masters that it points to. It may mean that you will have to keep your iPhoto library around because Aperture is pointing to photos in it.
Your plan to move the iPhoto library to an external hard drive is exactly what I did when I imported my iPhoto library into Aperture. I kept it around for quite a while until I was satisfied that I didn't accidentally leave something in there that I didn't import into Aperture.

I am having a MBP mid 2012 w/ Yosemite along w/ iPhone and iPad, all running 8.1. After having upgraded all devices to latest version, I wonder how do you get now the Mac iPhoto library into iCloud Photo library? iCloud Photo Library setting has been enabled on all devices.
On the iCloud, All Photos folder just shows a fraction of what's on my Mac iPhoto library, probably the most recent pictures I have taken and there's no sign of any automatic uploading as suggested by all Apple Ads...

iPhoto on your Mac is not supposed to work with iCloud Photo Library. The new "Photos" app for the mac will be able to do it. The release of this app has been announced for "Early next year".
For now, only your mobile devices can upload to iCloud Photo Library. So you have to upload your photos to the mobile devices to get them into iCloud Photo Library Beta.
That is not easy, because you cannot upload from your iPhoto library to your iOS 8 devices using iTunes with iCloud Photo Library Beta enabled on the device. It will disable syncing photos with iTunes. As long as you are using iCloud Photo Library Beta, mail the Photos to your devices or upload using Photo Stream.
