Old iPhoto project files missing captions after upgrading from OSX 10.4 to 10.7.4

Hi Everyone,
I'm hoping you might be able to assist me please!  I had created a bunch of iPhoto project books whilst using OSX 10.4 and the version of iPhoto that resided there.  I've recently upgraded all the way up to 10.7.4 and installed the most recent version of iPhoto so that I can finally purchase these photo books.  iPhoto "upgraded" my projects and now all my captions have been replaced by the "ipsum lorem" template text!  Is there any way I can recover the caption text from the hundreds of pages?  Do they reside in a file somewhere on my Mac or have they been wiped away during the upgrade?
Thanks for you time and consideration!

  • Missing messages after upgrading from Panther to Tiger

I have just upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.11 and find that the new Mail app has imported all my old messages from one account in full but has only imported a small selection of the latest emails in my other two accounts and these have no text in them. In the Mail folder in the Library I can see two files called mbox which are of the right size (about 350mB each) to hold the missing messagesl but they cannot be read. The Inbox for the account which is working also contains a folder called Messages containing separate files for each email with the suffix .emlx
How can I get my other two accounts to be the same? I have tried 'Import' from OS X Mail app. but this says it cannot see any files to import.
    Edward Mason

The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Mail 2.x is often simply unable to import mailboxes that worked fine in Mail 1.x. Apple hasn’t bothered to fix the incredibly weak Mail 2.x import capabilities in all this time.
The following procedure is meant to fix the incomplete conversion of a POP account’s Inbox. A similar procedure should allow you to fix other mailboxes that might also be affected:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn’t need to have an .mbox extension.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    5. Move the files mbox and Incoming_Mail out of INBOX.mbox, into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. These files contain all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger, and maybe even some messages that had been deleted. mbox is the most important. Incoming_Mail may or may not be present.
    6. Move any strangely-named Messages-T0x... folders to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or an indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn’t work as expected. If you’ve been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
    7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox and Incoming_Mail (if it exists) files only. Now, proceed as follows:
    8. Open Mail.
    9. The account’s Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that’s not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that’s on the Desktop.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated now. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you want and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Take a look at the following article to learn what you might have done before upgrading to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON’T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Missing accounts after upgrade from Tiger to Leopard

I upgraded from 10.4.11 to 10.5.6 today and in Mail, all but one of my accounts and their associated inboxes are missing. I've installed the recent Mail fix file (10.5.6). All my stored old e-mails are there. I can't see any of my other e-mail addresses or any e-mails that are in them.
I have a .mac account with 2 additional .mac mail addresses and also 3 POP accounts. In the Inbox, the only e-mail that shows up is that for my main .mac account. I've deleted the mail.plist file and re-imported the mailboxes and they still don't show up.
    Can anyone help?

By going to my Mail folder in my Library folder (~/Library/Mail) and deleting all files except any folders and then opening Mail and re-importing, everything comes up properly.

  • Can't play .MOV files in Quicktime after upgrading to OSX 10.6

Recently upgraded from OS X (10.5) to OS X (10.6).  .MOV files played fine in Quicktime before the upgrade.

I recorded the movie using a camera, and the file plays on the camera as a movie... I'm stumped.
Then I suggest you compare the size of the playing file on your camera with the size of the non-playing file on your computer—they may not be the same. As QTKirk indicated, 40.37 KB seems unreasonable for any normally encoded non-anamorphic 1280x720 MPEG-4/AVC file more than a few frames long. For comparison purposes, a typical 1280x720 JPEG photo compressed to its smallest file size setting on a Mac would have a file size on the order of 100 KB. Other ways to look at your file would be...
    a) if it is one second long, then its data rate is on the order of 322.96 Kbps
    b) if it is two seconds long, then its data rate is on the order of 161.48 Kbps
    c) if it is three seconds long, then its data rate is on the order of 107.65 Kbs
etc., etc., etc. which is unheard of for any reasonable amount of quality for 1280x720 HD dimensions in this compression format.

  • After Upgrade from OSX 10.5.8 to 10.6 HD3870 has lower resolution

I'm running a 1st Generation Mac Pro with 7GB of ram, andI just recently tried to upgrade from lep to snow lep. Everything went very smooth, all my applications were fine, even logic pro 9...but my monitor that was running on the ATI HD 3870 lost it's higher resolutions. I tried downloading some installers but that just led to my entire system getting fubar'd and had to restore from time machine to the backup I made right before I upgraded to snow lep. Does anyone know of anything that could be blocking the drivers for the 3870? I even tried to get to 10.6.3 and still didn't work. Any help or a friendly push in the right direction would be appreciated. I am going to upgrade as soon as the Mac Pro refresh comes about, but I would still like to get this system on 10.6 so I can get some use of the 64-bit platform capabilities within Logic Pro.
    Many Thanks,
    Webb

First you need to research all the problems people are having with it, & make sure you have a bootable clone of what you just in case.
then you must get 10.6 if they still have it, install it & update to 10.6.8 so you have the App Store to buy & download the huge 10.8 Installer.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

It's been pulled from the online store, so you have to call Apple to buy it, last I heard.

  • Missing photos after upgrade from iPhoto 08 to 11

I just updated iPhoto from '08 (v7.1.5) to '11 (v9.5) and I opened a copy of my old '08 library.  Unfortunately iPhoto '11 does not show any events or photos from this library.  If I view the contents of the library in Finder I see that it still contains a 40 GB 'Originals' folder, but the 'Masters' folder is empty.  Is there a more involved upgrade procedure - that is, instead of simply choosing the old '08 library upon start up?
I saw this earlier question https://discussions.apple.com/message/23844703#23844703. Though the problem sounds similar the solutions was to give up on importing and adding the photos manually.  There must be a way to preserve my albums, no?
    Thanks.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • External Hard Disc problems after upgrade from OSX 10.4 to 10.6

I have a La Cie external hardisk which I connect to my MacBook Pro with a firewire cable. It is formatted with UFS/Unix filesystem and was very fussy about being unplugged without being ejected under 10.4. If it was accidently unplugged with 10.4 it would take about 10 minutes to mount the next time it was plugged in, while it was checked, but would work fine.
Now with 10.6.1 the permissions show me having only read access (so I decided to make a copy of the disk and reformat it). Unfortunately when the disk is plugged in, it immediately shows in the finder, but is behaving strangely - it only shows some of the files in the filesystem and ceases to function at all after a few minutes. If I try to verify the disk using Disk Utility I get an error message saying that it is unable to unmount. I've also tried DiskWarrior, but it says the filesystem is unsupported.
Any ideas would be gratefully received...
    Thanks!
    Chris

this very much sounds like a failing/failed hard drive. you can try reformatting it wile booted from the snow leopard install dvd using disk utility there. if that does not work (I suspect it won't) I would get rid of it altogether.

  • Missing slideshows after upgrade to iPhoto'11

I think I have the same problem as dyanefromshelton just posted:  After upgrading from iPhoto'08 to iPhoto'11 I don't seem to have my slideshows.  They are all listed under slideshows, but there appears to be no content in them when I try to play them. Are they lost due to incompatibility, or is there some way to get them back?

I just closed iPhoto and opened it again, and now everything is OK!

  • TS4213 Why can't iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iTunes Library files and Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iPhoto Library files now that I upgraded to '11?

Why can't iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iTunes Library files and Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iPhoto Library files now that I upgraded to '11?
Examples of what is going on:
    1. In Pages, Numbers & Keynote, when I go to the media browser the Audio section reads "Open iTunes to populate this list" even after iTunes has been opened, .xml file has been replaced/repaired, etc  AND Photo section reads "Open iPhoto to see photos from your iPhoto Library in this list" even after iPhoto Library has been replaced and new default library created.
    2. In iMovie, similar thing ... when I go to add photos or music to a movie the iTunes files aren't present and the iPhoto photos are missing with similar messages as in #1.
    3. In iPhoto, similar thing ... when I go to add music to a slideshow it says to "Open iTunes to populate this list".
It is shocking to me that Apple would let something as simple as a pathway link to associated library files get this messed up on an upgrade, but what's even more surprising is that with the number of people who seem to be having this particular issue (and I can tell from all the research that I've done for weeks online that there are a lot of them) that there doesn't seem to be a single clear answer to fixing it anywhere on these community support forums.  Most of what I've seen is rehashed advice from outdated issues.  What I need is a simple answer to how do we get these programs to look for the correct location of the photo and music files because I sure can't seem to find any logical place to do that through the programs' preferences files or the system preferences window?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    P.S. Here's the details on the software/hardware:
    MacBook Pro
    Mac OS X
    Version 10.7.5
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    iTunes 11.0.4 (4)
    iPhoto '11 9.4.3 (720.91)
    iMovie '11 9.0.9 (1795)
    Keynote '09 5.3 (1170)
    Pages '09 4.3 (1048)
    Numbers '09 2.3 (554)

I have the same problem on a new MacBook Pro. I have not been able to access the iTunes library from iPhoto since I got this computer. I looked in the Preferences file and deleted the com.apple.iApps.plist but there was no com.apple.iApps.lockfile so I just deleted the iAPPs.plist and rebooted the computer.  Still no iTunes available in iPhoto.
All my music is in iTunes and plays. After reading the above I brought up Pages and I was able to access music and insert a track into a document.
    Do you have any suggestions.

  • Excel file can't open via email after upgrading to OSX 10.9.2

After upgrading to OSX 10.9.2, my Excel files are not readable when sent by email. My version for Excel is 2008 for Mac V12.3.6.
I have no trouble opening Excel on my computer but cannot seem to send Excel files via email.

Thanks. Tried that and it works but I had found another alternative.
Didn't realise but my Excel file had the extension missing even though it was saved as xlsx. To solve the problem, I just clicked on 'Append the File Extension' when I 'Saved As' and it worked. Thanks for the alternative help anyway.

How can I get my time machine to allow me to recover files again?
After upgrading MBA to OS X, the time machine still backs up the files; but, I'm not able to navigate within the time machine or select any folders or files for restore.
I've searched and can not find a solution to the problem that's being encountered.

Yeap that all makes sense now.
Do you only have the current backup showing in the TM display?? Won't it fill in the rest?
Over wireless are you waiting for the indexing to finish.. ??
Previous backup may not show for a couple of hours.
Long short of it.. Mavericks version of TM is a pain.
Sometimes it is easier to completely ignore the TM backup and do the restore manually.
I have posted the details here. See if this helps.

I am guessing, this is not the end for accessing to my iphoto (last update) library, my life memories, but after upgrade to OSX Yosemite, my iphoto library, located on time capsule (+/- 50G) does not load at all. I have sent the report to Apple.

    Best Regards,

    That is a bad idea
1 - since you have files on the same disk as your backup you have no backup for those files which apparently includes you photos - having no b means it is just a matter of time until you lose them
2 - The TimeMachine backup grows until it fills the volume it is on - when the TC is full iphoto (and maybe other programs) will stop workig due to lack of space
You need at least two external hard drives - one for the iPhoto library (this one needs to be directly connected with a fast wired connection like Thungrbolt, Firewire or USB and be formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) ) and a separate EHD for  you TM backup

    Hi,
File -> Export not working after upgrade from 11i to R12.1.3 in few systems. Can you please let me know what could be the issue.
If export record count more than 200 it is working fine in all the systems and if change the profile option "Export MIME type” value to ‘text/tab-separated-values’ from application/excel also it is wokring.
