Old iPod battery drains on plugin w/USB

I've got a pretty old 20GB iPod that I only use at home, plugged into my Bose. The battery only lasts a couple hours on its own, but for some reason, whenever I plug it into my USB cable, it dies almost immediately with a drained battery.
I know that I can't charge this old model with a USB cable, but it should have enough battery power to update my playlists. But it dies almost immediately.
To make things more complicated: it updates sometimes, but very rarely. When it does, the battery drains very quickly (I get about 10 minutes tops). Lately, though, I can't even do that. Any ideas or suggestions? I'm hoping this thing isn't ready for the trashcan yet. Is there a different cable I could use? Would it be worth the money to replace the battery? Is the battery even the problem?

Well, I solved the problem for myself, and it was pretty silly I suppose. I'd forgotten that this older iPod came with a Firewire cable, not USB. I managed to track down the original cable, and now it uploads just fine with that. The USB worked, but only sporadically. So far, the Firewire has been smooth.

  • 2nd Gen IPOD Battery Drain Using USB

I have a 2nd gen IPOD (called IPOD with Dock Connector on the Apple webpages). This came with a firewire connector, but I have no firewire port on my laptop. I borrowed a USB cable from a 2nd gen IPOD Nano to connect to my laptop. When I connect, the IPOD battery is drained within seconds. On Apple's website, the USB connector that they claim works with the 2nd gen IPOD is that same IPOD Nano cable (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=8F9 5B674&nplm=MA591LL/A). Has anyone successfully connected a 2nd gen IPOD to a USB port using this cable?

Check here to identify what model iPod you have.

All the iPods labelled "dock connector" which I believe are 3rd gen iPods cannot charge via a usb connection.
Charging this unit requires a built-in 6-pin FireWire port or the FireWire iPod Power Adapter.

  • 10.5.6 Update breaks USB Keyboard causes iPod Battery Drain when sleeping.

I just recently installed 10.5.6 via automatic updates. I normally connect my iPod touch to my iMac via the keyboard Left USB port. I put my computer asleep at night. When I wake up my iMac in the morning my iPod is totally drained of its power over night. When I placed the iMac asleep in the evening the iPod battery was full. It seems the update broke the USB ports on the keyboard. To test this theory I tested keyboard on all three ports on the iMac by moving my keyboard connection. The iPod touch drained connected to the keyboard on all three ports. If I place my iPod on the USB port by itself it does not happen. It only happens when it is connected to the keyboard.
So far I have downloaded the full install of 10.5.6 and installed it. I also did the little voodoo of fixing permissions but still the same results. If I use the USB port on my keyboard my iPod will drain of all of its power in 6 to 8 hours when I place my computer a sleep. If I connect my iPod directly to USB port and put my computer asleep the iPod does not loose power and will be charged in the morning.
Not only does the keyboard not charge the iPod when it sleeps it drains the power from the iPod.
This did not happen before my update to 10.5.6.
Does anyone have any ideas? Is this happening to anyone else?
    Thank you for your help.

I opened a service call with Apple on this keyboard problem. I was shipped a new keyboard, reverted my computer to 10.5.5, went to the apple store to work with a Genius and worked with online support. Finally after weeks of going back and forth I received and answer from Apple Engineers. It seems the engineers “verified that the behavior for power handling has been changed” in 10.5.6. “resulting in the issue you've been reporting”. They also now “verified that the issue your reporting is correct behavior under this improved handling system”. They suggest to plug devices directly into the USB port when my iPod Touch is directly attached to my computer. I think I will just have to get a USB hub. It is a shame Apple had to waist money sending me a new keyboard. It is also a shame I had to revert my iMac to a 10.5.5 before the engineers took the time to look at the problem I was having. If the send level support engineers took the time to look into the problem the call could have been solved in 24 hours.

  • 30GB video Ipod battery drained/dead?

It appears that the boombox that I have kept my (approx 14 mo old)ipod plugged into (for the past several month with no issues)has been keeping the screen on to the detrement of my battery. At first it was displaying the "please wait--very low battery" screen. I kept it hooked up to my computer--but it didn't charge--and wouldn't read for a diagnositic or a reset. Then I used my wall charger (as it has been widely praised in the discussions) and this drained my battery so that it doesn't even display "please wait--very low battery"--not even my computer can revive it to anything anymore! it...is...dead...dead...dead!
Any ideas? Is my battery toast?
    Many Thanks for any assistance

  • Ipod battery drain and overheat

Hi, I have a third gen Ipod 32 gb, and it heats up very fast and its battery drains within an hour. I have shut down all background applications, and backed it up TWICE. I have also recently updated the software to iOS 5.0.1. I also own an Iphone 3GS and an Iphone 4, but no such problems occur at all. I have had the Ipod for a year or two, and am only noticing problems now. There is also a problem with some applications which will not download. They stay on the loading screen, with the bar where the name of the app should be. The bar does not move, and it is like this for almost 50 of the apps on the Ipod. there is also an app that has not loaded for a long time, and asks continuously and annoyingly for another users password, who logged onto Itunes to download it, then logged off. What to do??? PS: not relevant but maybe, I use a laptop PC (not a mac) to back up via Itunes, and have not jailbroken or messed with the ipod in any way.

I would try the standardfixes to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset. Nothings will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    - Restore from Backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
If you still have a problem it is likely due to a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Firewire works great, but ipod battery drains?

I've been having lots of problems for a while with the error -36 situation. i finally decided to get the adaptec 1394 firewire card for notebooks and my problem has been solved. i am extremely happy about this.
however, i've noticed that since i've been connecting the ipod via firewire, the ipod's battery drains dramatically when connected. i had it over halfway charged, and after a couple of hours of being connected, it got completely drained. is this normal? thanks for any help.

I don't have a problem with the fact that it doesn't charge. i'm just wondering if it is normal that the battery drains so quickly. is it the constant transferring of data that makes the drain so fast?

  • 40 GB iPod Battery drains when mac is powered off

If I leave my iPod in the cradle ( connected via firewire) and the Mac is powered OFF, the battery will be drained in a few hours (or overnight). If I leave the iPod sitting wherever (not connected to anything), the battery will not be drained... normal.
I assume then that the Mac (G4 867) is sucking the juice out of the battery when the Mac is powered off. Is this a Firewire port issue or ?
I don't always leave my Mac on, and I don't always take the iPod out of its cradle... how can I stop this from happening?
    G4 867   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   iPod Click 40GB

Is this a Firewire port issue or ?
I remember a few people mentioning this problem last year, and I think the consensus was that it's a Firewire port issue, and the only solution really is to take the iPod out of the dock when the computer is turned off. (It might work to have an external powered Firewire hub, I don't know if the computer would shut that down or not).

  • IPod Battery Drains Very Quickly - NEW BATTERY 3 TIMES

    Hello all,
I have a problem with my iPod 5G 60gb video. I've had it for a few years, about a year ago it started losing its battery very quickly. I replaced the battery 2 or 3 times, but this did nothing. I can charge it up fine, but it seems it drains much quicker than normal. The main problem is that it drains even when the iPod is in sleep mode. If I leave it overnight, it will be dead in the morning.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is it a motherboard problem? I'm sure it's not the battery.
    Thanks.

    I forgot to add:
I restored the iPod via iTunes once, nothing changed. I turned backlight down all the way, no significant difference. I have no alarm clocks on, and turned off all clocks on the iPod as well.

  • Old Ipod 3rd Gen not charging in usb

    hi,
i have a 3rd gen ipod, wich was sold with firewire cable, i've tried to charge it with an usb cable, but it didn't charged...was it my fault or is it a normal situation?
    thanx

The iPod video does charge over Firewire--however, it will NOT sync with the Firewire cable. A USB connecion must be used to add songs or videos to the iPod.

  • My 5 month old Touch battery drains at random times.

I'm baffled.  My apps running in the background are cleaned up.  I've checked my settings more times than I can count.  It'll be fine sitting on my desk--I'll check it ever so often--and then, usually overnight when I'm not checking it, it'll just drain.  Any suggestions?   Please?
    Thanks--

Thanks for this suggestion.  I've been having some issues with my Nook Tablet in the evenings also . . . so that could be the problem.  I'm also trying to switch it back to computer backup from cloud backup, but iTunes isn't letting it do that.  I thought maybe it was trying to constantly sync with the cloud at night (read another post on here about a person with an iPad that was doing that).  But I can't get the computer backup to "apply."  I'm obviously missing a step somewhere . . . .

  • Ipod battery drain

Even with all the push, notifications and everything else fancy turned off (wifi excluded), my battery life is only about a day when I don't even unlock it to use, when it used to be at least a week without any use. Any idea why? I'm using iTunes 9 still since iTunes 10 looks lame, but is there any update regarding this in the new version? Any ideas how to preserve the battery life?
    Thanks!

  • IPOD BATTERY

Recently, just after the year period of course, my 4th gen ipod battery drained really fast. I got a replacement battery that is supposed to be better, but it still drains fast. It doesnt drain quite as fast, but if left unplugged overnight, I can not turn it on in the morning. I have checked the clock and the alarm, nothing is turning it on. I have tried reseting it and I have made sure that it is up to date on the software. What can I do? Does anyone know of anything else that could be wrong with it?

did you charge the new battery for at least 3 hours when you just replaced it?? and you may also try to restore your ipod and update to the latest software

  • My Ipod Touch drained battery, I then didn't use it for a week, went to charge it and I get nothing, only a black screen.  HELP!!! It is not the cord, I tried it on other products and the usb cord works fine.  I need to charge so I can use.

My battery drained on my Ipod Touch.  I did not end up using it for a week. Yesterday I charged it with my USB to the computer, came back the next morning and it was still dead.  I then tried charging it on my laptop....same thing.  Went through the tech support things about holding the two buttons down for system restore....nothing.  Please HELP.

Give it time. Even plugged in the battery needs to have a certain amount of power to power the screen.
Leave it on the charger for a couple of hours and hten see if it'll turn on.
