Old iPod New iBook

Hi, I have a touch wheel firewire 10gb iPod. It has given me excellent service using my iMac DV 400 OS 9.2.2. I have never updated the iPod software its running just as it did the day I bought it.
I now have a new iBook G4 12" Tiger. So what I would like to know is......
How do I update the iPod to work with the iBook ?
If I plug the iPod into the iBook will it take care of any upgrading automatically ? Im assuming I will lose whats on the iPod but as I have all the original cd's I'm not worried in that respect.
Or would I be better completly erasing the ipod back to its factory fresh state and then plugging it into the iBook ?
Any advice would be much appreciated
Nick

No need to lose the songs on the iPod. Just update the Firmware (if wanted). You can also install the latest iTunes which may 'demand' an iPod update. See these links to get the software:

If there is no music on the new computer, you can either re-rip the CDs or recover the songs from the iPod:

  • Old Ipod,New computer.No response.Is it Window's Vista's fault?

Alright here is my problem: I have been syncing music into my two year old ipod nano on my old computer. My old computer died a year ago, however,so my ipod hasn't received new music for an entire year.I finally get a new laptop a few weeks ago and am ready to start a new. I've downloaded the latest itunes and then I plug my ipod in and absolutley nothing happens. The little image of the ipod doesn't appear,it doesn't charge, and it isn't even asking if I want to replace my old music with the new music I've compiled on my itunes. I've tried switching on and off hold and I've pressed menu and select at the same time. Still nothing happens.I don't have time to go to a store for help so please HELP ME!!

Have you had a chance to look at these troubleshooting pages? They may be of some help:

  • Old Ipod New Itunes

Going through my room i found a very old Ipod Mini, and i want to see what music ihad on it, but the screen is totaly cracked and you cant see anything, when i plugg it into my comouter nothing happens, is there anything i can do? or is it a lost cause?

    Hey...
I've got this really annoying problem I cannot solve.
My iPod shuffle was and still is working properly,
but I've got a new computer now and new iTunes on
that same computer. When I connect my iPod to this
new computer it recognizes it, but doesn't want to
work (transfering music etc.) unless I restore my
iPod. I tried to do that but my iPod was restoring
for about 5 hours, and then I gave up cause obviously
something was wrong. Can anyone tell me how can I use
    my iPod on two computers??
Bad news... the Shuffle only syncs to one iTunes (and computer) at a time. Each time you synce it to a different one, the contents are wiped...
And why doesn't it want to
    restore properly??
Don't know... but you could try the Reset Utility:

  • (URGENT) Old iPod, new iTunes.

-I have 444 songs on my iPod that I got from sources other than the iTunes Store.
-I have a new computer. I can't access my old iTunes.
-I am NOT going to download four hundred and forty four songs just because iTunes has a terrible (I'm being polite ) help section.
-It doesn't say 'import iPod' anywhere.
-The only known way to delete songs off your iPod is to remove them from your library and then sync.
    -This library, naturally, is empty.
-As you can imagine, I am +very, very happy+ about this.
-Tell me how I can sync my iTunes to my iPod, not the other way round.

    Hi!
If you have purchased songs from the iTunes Music Store, then those are pretty easy to transfer to your computer. You'll just need to follow [this instructions|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305465].
All your other songs (for example, those ripped from your CD's), you'll need to use any 3rd party program to transfer them to your iTunes library!
Some can also transfer your playlists, videos, ratings, podcast...

  • Old Ipod, New computer- don't want to erase songs!

If I have a new computer with Itunes with none of the songs that are on my ipod how to I connect the Ipod and not erase all my old songs?

    Hello Melissa-
Another suggestion would be to try to uninstall iTunes on your new computer. Before you do so however, relocate all of your audio files to the hard disk in a folder that is not related to iTunes. You should probably just create a folder on your desktop and name it "temp music". Put the files into the folder, and uninstall iTunes. This will keep safe the songs you have on the new computer. I am not familiar with the PC interaction with the iPod, but i believe that the iPod will appear as a portable drive if you plug it in to the USB port even without iTunes installed. Once you have plugged in to the USB port, providing the iPod appears as a portable drive, go into the folders on the iPod and copy the files you wish to transfer into your new computer. You may want to put them directly into the folder you are storing the music in from when you uninstalled iTunes. Once you have all of the music transferred, unplug your iPod, reinstall iTunes, and import all of the music you placed in the folder directly into iTunes. After you have imported all of the music, plug in your iPod and it should update with all of the songs you have in iTunes. ANOTHER option may be to plug into the old computer (if you still have it) and change the update method to manual when the iPod is plugged in. This is in iTunes Preferences under iPod. Once you have changed the update method to manual, the iPod does not automatically update upon connection to the computer. This may be the easier method, however I am not positive that the settings transfer from your old computer directly to the iPod and are recognized by the iTunes in your new computer. Good Luck. Hopefully these ideas save you the downloads.

  • Old iPod, new MBP

I got the new video iPod at Christmas and I love it. My new MPB is coming Wednesday. Since my iPod was set up on my old Windows compputer, will it work on my Mac? Will it need to be re-formatted and how will I do that?

It will work, however when you go to the about page it will still say formatted for Windows. Also if you want to put your music on your MBP you can use iPodrip or Senuti to pull the songs/videos off the iPod and onto the MBP. They are both available at versiontracker.com and are free downloads.

  • Newpc, new itunes, old ipod, new troubles

Got a new pc, and installed new itunes, and now itunes does display my ipod, but not my playlists. New playlists and new music do not download to ipod. Have tried reset, redownload, reviewed cables, etc. Do not wish to try restore ipod, but will if needed. Any suggestions gratefully accepted. Thanks, M

Try checking all of your settings in iTunes.
Go to Edit - Preferences. Make sure you have your iPod plugged in. Then click the iPod tab, and make sure "Automaticaly Update All Songs on iPod is checked.
The problem sounds like it does NOT lie in the iPod, so restoring it probably won't help. Mess around with the settings in iTunes. Try other settings, not just one the one i told you. Maybe something just got selected or deselected by accident.

  • Old Ipod, new computer

I just bought a new computer. I have a 5g 30gig ipod and I want to use the new computer for this ipod. What steps do i take? I've already got itunes on my computer, my biggest concern is if itunes will automatically sync to my ipod, thus giving my an empty ipod to match the empty itunes. also, do i have to be worried about the new computer owning the ipod?

iTunes will ask you before it syncs anything. Truthfully, your iPod determins if that happens because the preferences are on the iPod.
Connect your iPod. When iTunes recognizes it, a window will pop up asking you if you want to sync your iPod to this library. Say no. If there are any updates for your iPod, it will ask you if you want to update it. Don't do it until after we get through this. After all of the pop-up windows are done, then go to File>Preferences (iTunes>Preferences for a Mac) and click on the iPod tab. Under the audio section make sure that automatic updates are turned off. Put it on manual updates. Do the same thing for any other iPod you connect to your new computer.
Now you can add music to your new computer and go back and forth between both computers, if that is what you were aiming for. Welcome to the Boards and I hope I was of some help. Tell me if I wasn't and I'll keep trying, along with anyone else on the boards who thinks they can.

  • Old ipod, new iphone

Hi there!  We are giving our daughter, who currently owns an ipod4, an iphone.  Right now since she was only 12 at the time she got her ipod, she is using my itunes account where her ipod is synced up to.  She also has her own laptop now, so we're going to let her create an itunes account for her ipod and her iphone.  Can we do that or do we have to somehow disconnect her ipod from my account before we sync it with her new computer?

    Hello babibluone,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. To use your iPod with your new account and library, you can restore it to factory settings. You can then sync your files it and free up some space on your iPhone.

  • Old ipod - new laptop - no tunes :-(

    Hi,
I am new to apple, but have just been given an ipod classic 3rd generation with a docking station etc.  I have plugged it into my new toshiba Windows 8.1 laptop but it does not recognise the device.  I have also downloaded itunes and copied my music file into it, but itunes does not recognise them either.
does anyone know of any good videos of how I should go about uploading my music to both itunes and the ipod classic gen 3, and does anyone know of a way to get my laptop to recognise the ipod classic 3rd gen docking station.
Sorry if this has been asked before, but I did search but could find nothing on here.
Thanks to all for your help.

  • Old iPod, new owner

I recently purchased a used iPod Mini from my hubby's friend, I was able to upload songs on iPod onto Itunes library and authorized our computer to access songs. Unfortunately, all the songs are under hubby's friend's account and we cannot contact his friend as he is on vacation for a while.
How can we autorize songs from iPod to play on our computer without having to be asked for friend's password?
    Thanks in advance!

You can't. Unless your friend wants to give you his password and authorize your computer to his account, you can not play them on your computer without buying your own copies.
