Old ipod/old software

I have one of the original ipods. I have downloaded music to itunes recently. when i tried to transfer it to my ipod, i got the message that my ipod software was too old to transfer the music. i downloaded the software update: 2005-10-12. this will not install on my ipod...i get a message that i need 10.2.8 or later. how do i accomplish this? please advise?

ah i have the exaaact same problem save for the 10.2.8. i have that, and it just says:
"the updater does not have a firmware image."
all i have to say is la-ti-freakin-da, i spent the four hours downloading the 2005-10-12 software update for my touch wheel ipod with the four nifty button-thingies below the screen that has been my constant companion for nearly a year and a half now.
and now my computer or apple or some demon in my computer has deemed me unworthy of my new music. i NEED my sparklehorse and new pornographers. and to excerbate the situation, it's denied me of belle&sebastian. it's gone too far.
if anyone knows how to fix this or even what a "firmware image" is, i'd be much obliged if you'd fill me in.

Old software? You probably can't get them now from Apple. Is there a reason why you want an older version and not the most recent version?

Hi - iTunes will not install - error message says it can't upgrade old iPod software and it should be uninstalled. I had an old 2ndGen iPod and I have removed everything to do with that (Musicmatch, quicktime, iPod manager (although teh latter proved difficult as it wouldn't delete from Program Files - got rid of it and then when I reinstalled everything in order to uninstall again to see if that would fix, it now wont delete at all) etc.) and have been through all the windows installer clean-ups and everything else on the support page.
Has anyone else encountered this - would really appreciate help as doing my head in! Its so I can use new Nano.

Re-did the windows installer clean-up and found a tiny bit of old Ipod updater software which I've deleted and its now working...at last!

I had the same problem with my iPad, i couldn't get the newer version of itunes because the computer was too old and my iPad couldnt sync with the old itunes. I got a PC from school a few months later so that solved the problem for me. Unfortunately i don't think there would be a program to put your music on your iPod, iTunes should be the only way to transfer files to Apple devices. What operating system are you running and what version of it is it?

You probably have a 1G ipod. To get the latest iOS for that mode go to:

You likely have a 2G iPod and those can go higher than 4.2.1
A 3G can go to 5.1.1
IA 4G, with cameras can go to iOS 6.1.6.
The 5G, also with cameras can go to iOS 8

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

Giving away old ipod - cd rom / uploading software question

I recently bought the Classic and it didn't come with iTunes cd to install it. That's fine because I have it already from my old ipod. If I give my sister my old ipod, what is she going to use to install iTunes? Does Apple allow us to use the same cd to install on different computers?

No iPods come with a CD anymore, all you need to connect and use an iPod on a computer is a copy of iTunes. If iTunes isn't already installed on your sister's computer she just needs to download a copy from the Apple iTunes page and connect the iPod. The CDs used to have a copy of iTunes that was the version in use at the time and a copy of the iPod software updater. The software updaters were discontinued when iTunes 7 was released and the updater became part of iTunes so you didn't need a separate program any more.

Is it possible for the software to be too new to restore from old iPod's backup?

So I tried to restore my new iPod from my old iPod's backup, but the old one was working on iOS 5.1 and the new one was an older software.
It said it could not restore the new one from the backup of the old one because the software was too old, but the only option is to update it to iOS 5.1.1.. will it still say it is not compatible now because the new one is too new and the old one is too old? :/

If you update your iPod to iOS 5.1.1, you'll be able to restore the iPod to a backup from any iPod with current or older software.
To put it simpler, you can update your new iPod to the latest iOS and restore your old iPod's data.

HT1351 i cant seem to download my old ipod nano because its asking for a driver software, dont know what to do and need help!

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
      left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
        the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
      the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
            because it is three times faster than wireless.

2-3 old ipod touch is no longer syncing to itunes library, which was recently moved to new laptop.

Recently moved my library of music, audiobooks, and podcasts to new laptop with Windows 8, at which time I upgraded my itunes software as well. My 2-3 year old ipod touch is no longer syncing properly. Audiobooks and podcasts are fine (after much effort), but all of two songs out of an extensive music library are the only ones syncing. I see them in my library on the new computer and have managed to sync them to my iphone 5 as well. Ipod touch appears to have ample file storage space left. What gives? Is the i-pod touch already useless with the latest Itunes software? Operator error? Hardware problem? I don't know what to think. Have been using ipods for years without this issue.
