Old Ipod on my New Laptop

I'm trying to connect my old 4th gen click-wheel ipod to a new laptop with WindowsXP and the laptop isn't recognizing the new hardware (USB Mass Storage device). When I tried to update the driver with the old installation disk, I got a warning that the drivers might not be compatible with my OS and could cause performance issues. does anyone know where i can ge tthe drivers I need or if the old ones will be harmfull? And I already have the latest version of itunes installed already.
Thanks

  • Old Ipod photo but new laptop

    Hi all,
as far as I know, to prevent piracy and stuff an ipod can be connected and can take music only from that one computer it is formatted to right???
So now my biggest question is that my ipod has been formatted to my old toshiba laptop (windows XP) which I am going to discard very soon and buy a new one with windows XP pro.
Now is it possible for me to connect my ipod to my new laptop and import music into it like I;ve always been doing? Or is it that I'll have to take some kind of a backup and reformat my ipod to this new laptop and then dump all my music back into it???
SOMEBODY!!!! please help me soon cuz I am going to discard my old laptop with which my ipod's been working since its day of purchase and I dont want that my purchasing a new lptop should erase my entire pod or pose problems to put music into it
what is the best way to go about in this scenario...KINDLY help!!!

You can't sync or drag your music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs but not playlists back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
If you haven't already done so, change the update setting for your iPod to manual. If you are using the iPod in manual update mode, your iPod is safe from being accidentally erased when you connect to an empty iTunes on your new computer:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing Your Songs Manually
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

  • My old laptop crashed, how do I connect by Ipod to my new laptop without losing current contents of my Ipod?

My IPOD classic was synchronized to an old laptop computer that crashed recently. I just got a new laptop computer and I am wondering how I can connect by IPOD to it without losing all data I have on it?

Copy all the content that is currently on your iPod to your new laptop first. See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

My old computer died before I could make files and transfer library. How do I get my music from my iPod to my new laptop? I need help!!

    Hello kris10new,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link after the Apple support document below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

  • My laptop that had my iTunes on it has exploded (in a sense). I now have a new laptop, but I'm afraid to plug my iPod in because I know it will wipe out all 300 songs. Is there a way to put my old music on my new laptop?

(After my old laptop blew, it won't turn on anymore). I've invested quite a bit of money into my music, and it'd be a bummer if it's all gone to waste.
    Thanks in advance!

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • How do i sync my Ipod to my new laptop?

How do I sync my Ipod w/ my new laptop? It is apparently still registered to my now dead PC. Only some of my music shows up in the laptop library. I would like to have all my music on both the new laptop and Ipod, will not sync, even manually. How do I take care of this, with out having to pay Apple $20.00 for their time? Is it something simple or should I just pay them the $20.00? Desparately seeking an answer.....

The ipod will sync with one computer at a time.  Syncing to another will erase the current content from the ipod.
You should copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.
    Then sync

how do i change my old ipod for a new one but keep my music on i tunes and not have to reload it

Ok me again I once changed one ipod classic for another ipod classic on the same laptop , all my music on iTunes (300 CDs) where still there but could not be found by iTunes to load on to the new ipod , I had to load every CD again to solve , should I have reset the first ipod or something?

  • HT1451 I need to move my library from my old computer to my new laptop. What's the best way to do this?

I need to move my library from my old computer to my new laptop (Windows 8). What's the best way to do this?

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data. If you don't have any Apple devices then see HT2519 - Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.

  • I need "synchronize" my music and videos from my ipod to my new laptop

I buy a new computer but I don't have my music there. Can I copy all music and videos from my iPod to the new laptop?

The ipod is not a storage/backup device.  It simply mirrors the selected content of the computer to which it is synced.
The sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The exception is itunes purchases: File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
You should copy everything from the old computer or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

Otherwise you need a third-party program like TouchCopy or PhoneView

  • I have a i tunes account but laptop is broken . how do i sync my ipod to a new laptop?

i have a i tunes account but laptop is broken . how do i sync my ipod to a new laptop?

Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device. Unless you have the music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer

As for you own music, you may have to use a third party software to copy over. A good Free one is called Sharepod which you can download from Download.com here:
