Old iPod Software?

I recently updated my iTunes software to 5.0.1. Now when I try to copy songs to my iPod, it says that songs purchased from the Apple Music Store can't be copied because my iPod software is too "old."
But, the iPod software updater that I downloaded from Apple's website runs a preinstall check and concludes that no update is necessary.
Huh?
J.M.

Chandra, the next thing I'd try would be to restore your iPod using the latest iPod Updater, then re-sync with iTunes.
If you need the steps for doing this, see the link below.

  • What am I doing wrong? Can't install iTunes due to old iPod software

Hi - iTunes will not install - error message says it can't upgrade old iPod software and it should be uninstalled. I had an old 2ndGen iPod and I have removed everything to do with that (Musicmatch, quicktime, iPod manager (although teh latter proved difficult as it wouldn't delete from Program Files - got rid of it and then when I reinstalled everything in order to uninstall again to see if that would fix, it now wont delete at all) etc.) and have been through all the windows installer clean-ups and everything else on the support page.
Has anyone else encountered this - would really appreciate help as doing my head in! Its so I can use new Nano.
    Thx.

  • Old Ipod Software won't run iTunes 7

So I am getting ready to fly home and I had gotten a brand new ipod ( I had an old 80 gig video and got a new one!)
so I install the new Itunes 7.1 ( after uninstalling the old iTunes of course) and it tells me that it cannot update iTunes because of the Ipod software and to uninstall the software and try again.
I have uninstalled everything but when I click to uninstall the Ipod MAIN thing off of my add and removes programs.. it won't uninstall.
    What's going on?

uninstall the Ipod MAIN thing off of my add and removes programs.. it won't uninstall.
if Add/Remove won't let you remove a version of the iPod Software, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to remove the installation configuration of any entries called "ipod for windows [date]" or "ipod updater [date]".

  • All those old iPod Software Updater files in my Utilities folder?

I notice that I've collected a series of "iPod Software (Version) Updater folders in my Utilities folders. (Same for iSight Updater) Do I need to keep those or can I trash them and recover some HD space?

This post should be under the Connecting to Mac forum.
Anyway, if you want you can remove them to recover HD space. But I suggest you keep at least one old version, just in case there are any problems.

  • New Ipod software Vs Old Ipod software

Im not sure if this has been asked before but I wonder If anyone can help? Im about to sell my Ipod Mini to buy a 30GB Ipod, I was just wondering as the software for my Ipod mini is out of date, what happens when I add the software that I get with my new Ipod? Also, the songs that I have stored on Itunes, will they automatically transfer to the up to date software? Or will they all be lost? I dont really want to back up the songs if I can get away with it. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Carlene,
You will need to update everything.
If you have a high-speed internet connection, you can download the most up to date versions here...
    iTunes
    iPod Updater
Your music is not affected when you install those. No songs would be deleted. Installing those gives you the most up to date versions of everything.
If you can't download those (slow internet connection--takes too long), then just install the CD.
Either way, the software will just install and everything should work normally. No music would be deleted.
When you connect the iPod to the computer, iTunes should transfer the songs in iTunes to the iPod. iTunes will not delete the songs it currently has.
Also, it is always a good idea to back everything up...

  • How do I downgrade to old version of ipod software?

I'm relatively clueless, and frustrated. We have yet to update our Windows XP 2002 to service pack 2 because of problems we had when we last updated. But, I received a ipod nano (8 GB "red" if that makes a difference) as a gift and would like to use it! Problem is after initially working well, then wierd stuff started happening, so I went to the Apple store and they suggested I upgrade ipod software and itunes, which I did and now the computer cannot even see my ipod. I called for help and they wouldn't tell me how to revert to old ipod software, but I don't even know which version I had and now need to be compatible with service pack 1. I should also revert to an older version of itunes, but again, which one? And, how do I do these changes? Thanks for any advice

The way iTunes 11 treats audiobooks hasn't changed, but you may have to hunt a little for some of the menu options... You may also find Audiobooks on iPods useful.
You can restore much of the look & feel of the previous version with these shortcuts:
ALT to temporarily display the menu bar
CTRL+B to show or hide the menu bar
CTRL+S to show or hide the sidebar
CTRL+/ to show or hide the status bar (won't hide for me on Win XP)
Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library to restore the old search behaviour
Use View > Hide <Media Kind> in the cloud or Edit > Preferences > Store anduntick Show iTunes in the cloud purchases to hide the cloud items. The second method eliminates the cloud status column (and may let iTunes start up more quickly)
If you don't like having different coloured background & text in the Album view use Edit > Preferences > General and untick Use custom colours for open albums, movies, etc.
If you still feel the need to roll back to iTunes 10.7 first download a copy of the 32 bit installer or 64 bit installer as appropriate, uninstall iTunes and supporting software, i.e. Apple Application Support & Apple Mobile Device Support. Reboot. Restore the pre-upgrade version of your library database as per the diagram below, then install iTunes 10.7.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to scan the media folder and catch up with any changes made since the backup file was created.

  • ITunes 7.5 and old iPOD? iPOD will not update to 1.5 and no longer syncs

    Hi,
I'm new to updating Macs, and I think i may have installed something that won't work with old stuff. I have the following:
A PowerBook G4 (2002) just updated to Leopard (never had any updates before!)
A touchwheel 10 GB iPOD (2nd gen) never updated (version 1.2.1)
iTunes 7.5. (was version 3 until today)
Until yesterday, on my (then) 10.2 MAC OS X running iTunes 3, I had no problems. Today I upgraded the MAC to 10.5 and iTunes to 7.5. iTunes keeps telling me to update my iPOD to 1.5 (which appears to be the right version for this iPOD). But when I click on "install" I get the following: "The iPod..could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (1462)."
When I try to sync the iPOD with CDs I imported today (after all updates) I get the following: "Some of the items in the iTunes library including...were not copied to the iPod...because they cannot be played on this iPod. This now includes 100 songs.
So, I'm guessing that iTunes 7.5 doesn't work with an iPod this old?? Can I remove it and put an older version on, if my assumption is correct? If so, how, and what version of iTunes do I need, and where can I get it?
If my assumption is wrong, then what is going on?? I can't aford to buy a new iPOD and I don't want to not be able to update it (besides, it;s only half full). Please bear in mind with any suggestions, that although I'm pretty good on PCs, I'm a real novice with Macs and iTunes.
    thanks,
    Gheera

OK, answering my own question now. First, of course the difference was that the old iPOD software (1.2.1) presumably couldn't handle .m4a files (newer iTunes).
Second, tried updating the iPod by connecting to a 10.4 Mac with 7.4 iTunes. Several times got exactly the same probelm as described, but then suddenly one time it appeared to move forward to the next stage. I was so surprised I assumed I'd actually told it to update iTunes by mistake, so I cancelled. Then the same failure to update happened about 10 more times. But having seen it start once, I jst kept trying. Eventually, it kicked off properly again, and this time I ran the update. Now the iPod is 1.5 and it will sync with the newer songs, ripped by the 7.5 iTunes. So the moral is, keep trying, it gives up to easily and now and then you can sneak through, without doing anything different. Frustrating, and weird, but at least sorted.

  • I have an older Ipod Touch, I bought a new one and the Itunes on my computer is too old to recognize my new Ipod Touch and cannot be updated.  Is there a creditable software program I can use to get all my old music from my old iPod Touch to the new one?

I have an older iPod Touch, I bought a new one and the Itunes on my computer is too old to recognize my new iPod Touch and Itunes cannot be updated.  Is there a creditable software program I can use to get all my old music from my old iPod Touch to the new one?  It is my understanding that the music cannot be saved onto my new iTunes, b/c I did not have iCloud. I have over 2,000 songs I just cannot part with. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help some how!!  THANKS!

I had the same problem with my iPad, i couldn't get the newer version of itunes because the computer was too old and my iPad couldnt sync with the old itunes. I got a PC from school a few months later so that solved the problem for me. Unfortunately i don't think there would be a program to put your music on your iPod, iTunes should be the only way to transfer files to Apple devices. What operating system are you running and what version of it is it?

  • "Ipod software is too old" error with ipod nano

I am having a big problem with my ipod nano. I've been working on it for a week and still have not been able to fix it. I can sync my ipod nano to my mac g4 (running OS X 10.3.9) however in the ipod settings it won't show the version of ipod software and the click buttons to restore the ipod or update it are grayed out. When I connect the ipod I get an error message "Some of the items in the itunes library were not copied to your ipod because your ipod software is too old. Go to Summary tab in ipod preferences and update to get the latest software update."
As mentoined, when I do that the update is not available. I have reset the ipod multiple times, restored it, reformatted the disk etc. With the ipod blank, I discovered it does NOT give this error when I connect it to an older imac g3 (go figure) and that it correctly shows the ipod system information and allows me to update it or restore it from itunes (7.0.2). If I then plug the ipod into the G4 it gives the same error message.
The fact that it works and syncs fine with another mac leads me to believe that it's not the ipod, but my system software on the G4 that is corrupted- there must be a settings file that is bad, I just don't know which one it is. Help!!

Is it possible that you have part of an old iTunes still installed on your computer? If so, take a look at the info I pasted below from the following article:Troubleshooting iTunes installation on Mac OS X
It's possible that clicking the iTunes icon in your Dock or double-clicking an iTunes icon on your desktop could open an older version of iTunes. Open iTunes from the Applications folder to be sure you are opening the right version:
    Double-click your hard disk.
    Double-click the Applications folder.
    Double-click the iTunes icon.
If you notice another copy of iTunes in the Dock after following these steps, here's a way to take care of that:
    Quit iTunes.
Drag the iTunes icon out of the Dock.
Drag the iTunes icon from the Applications folder to the Dock.

You probably have a 1G ipod.  To get the latest iOS for that mode go to:
Purchasing iOS 3.1 Software Update for iPod touch (1st generation)
It is a paid update.  You may have to use a different browser to get the sublink to work correctly.
Go here to identify your iPod:

The 2G can go to 4.2.1.

  • 2nd gen. iPod -software too old but will not update or restore  HELP!!

Please Help! I've followed all update protocol and itunes 7 is installed, up and running etc, but..
I hook up the ipod and this message appears:
Some of the items in the iTunes library were not copied to the iPod "Kit-Ying's iPod" because your iPod software is too old.
I go to the summary tab in iPod preferences and click Update to get the latest iPod software update.
I'm looking in the summary and it says 'your iPod is up to date' (so the update button cannot be highlighted)
The only other option is to click on the "restore" button, which I've done
over and over again... Only to get:
'contacting the iPod software update server'
    And nothing happens.
I cancel and then get this message:
"there was a problem downloading the iPod software for the iPod "Kit-Ying's iPod". The requested resource was not found.
Tried manually restoring the thing and as soon as I hook it up again the
same message appears (software too old etc)
Am I missing something here as I feel I'm going round and round in circles!!
    PLEASE help me!!!

    hmmmmm.
Some of the items in the iTunes library were not copied to the iPod "Kit-Ying's iPod" because your iPod software is too old.
in your "Summary" page, is itunes displaying the correct icon for your ipod?
is a Movies or Photos tab appearing there?

Also, if you want to do an 'Update' with your old firmware (versus a restore which wipes all your data), you simply go into your iPod_Control folder on your iPod (which is set to hidden on default), go into Device folder under that and open the SysInfo file with notepad.
Alter the BuildID and VisibleBuildID to a number lower than the firmware updater you're going to use.
example: This is the SysInfo file. The numbers bolded, italicized and underlined is what you want to change:
    BoardHwName: iPod Q21
    pszSerialNumber: JQ5122G6PS9
    ModelNumStr: M9282
    FirewireGuid: 0x000A2700024E5DDF
    HddFirmwareRev: JD100B
    RegionCode: LL(0x0001)
    PolicyFlags: 0x00000000
    buildID: 0x03108000 (3.1)
    visibleBuildID: 0x03108000 (3.1)
    boardHwRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
    boardHwSwInterfaceRev: 0x00050014 (0.0.5 20)
    bootLoaderImageRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
    diskModeImageRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
    diagImageRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
    osImageRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
    iPodFamily: 0x00000004
    updaterFamily: 0x0000000A
Don't touch anything else. You want to use version 2.1, so you'd change 3108 to 2008. Simple.
This will give you the option to 'update' the firmware, so you don't lose all your songs. Don't know if this would help in your situation, but it might.
