Old itunes library preventing transfer of songs
Gonna explain the best I know how... have a Sony Vaio with Vista. Had iTunes and iPod working fine. Catastrophe strikes computer, just finished total recovery disk shindig, therefore sacrificing everything. Now computer is up and running again. Installed new version of iTunes. Worked fine and bought new song from iStore. Plugged in iPod and now it won't let my music go to iTunes from iPod because by iPod is apparently synced with another iTunes library, and can only be synced with one at a time. I presume this "other library" is the one i had before computer crash. But its my same account and all that. How do I tell iTunes its all the same and get it to take my music from iPod? When I click 'sync', a box comes up with two options... erase iPod and replace with music on "new" iTunes (not preferable)... or "transfer purchases: copy iTunes Store purchases this computer is authorized to play from this iPod to this iTunes library"... This option is scary cause I don't know what this computer is authorized to play, considering it thinks I have an "old" one and a "new" one. clear as mud?

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. When ou get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (including purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

That is not necessarily true. You are allowed to make a back-up of media you own and, at least in the Netherlands, even a copy of a work you've borrowed from a library. The law expressly permits this and you pay a certain amount for recordable media to allow for home use. See http://www.thuiskopie.nl/nl for this. If you then decide to destroy the media, i.e. do not transfer the media to someone else, I don't see how you infringe copyright by keeping the back-up. But I guess some so-called creatives like the idea of making money in all kinds of hypothetical ways...
It is a nice dream, where you have to work once and then earn a lot of money by selling millions of copies from your work. But buyers can make copies too!! Hahahahahaha! -
How do you transfer an old iTunes Library to a new one?
I just got a new MacBook for Christmas and I'm trying to sync my old iTunes Library from my PC to the new iTunes on my MacBook. I've tried the Home Sharing and I'm not sure if I'm doing it wrong or if it's just not working...if someone could give me a step-by-step that works, that'd be great.
**I already have the songs I've purchased from iTunes in the new library, I just need the songs I've colleced from CDs and other various sources. And since I have the MacBook with Retina Display, there's no disc drive, so that's another problem I'm facing.***

I cannot download my old itunes library to my new ipod - please help!!!!
Unfortunately in August 2006 someone nicked my Ipod mini - thanks! So my insurance co. replaced it with an ipod nano. I've installed the new software disk that came with my ipod nano and hooked up with the old itunes library to my new ipod nano. Simple huh? Not likely. It says I have too many tunes in my itunes library to download to my new ipod. However the mini and nano are both the same size -4G so why now is it telling my I have too many songs to download to my ipod nano? I have even deselected some from the library but no luck. My old ipod mini was not full to capacity anyway? any ideas?
It could be that my current pc is not logged to the internet - AOL fault currently being sorted but surely that should not stop me updating my ipod? The tunes are in the library the new 4g ipod (allbeit a nano and not a mini as was) is connected yet the **** thing says I have too many tunes selcted to download WHEN I KNOW I DONT! How to delete multiple old ITUNES LIBRARY files safely ?
I'd like to clean up my Itunes LIBRARY files, but don't know what's safe to do and not to do. (I have Itunes 8.1 / OSX10.4.11)
MY QUESTION IS TWOFOLD :
(1) how do I create a new Itunes library file now with today's date; and
(2) how do I delete multiple (old) Itunes library files, without risking the loss of what I've got ?
This all stems from exploring Itunes as a result of a problem I had today... when trying to import mp3's from my terrabyte drive, after about 150 successful mp3 track imports, Itunes froze and everything else on my MAC froze as well (constant spinning colored wheel). After many failed attempts to force quit Itunes, I turned off my MBPro. On restarting, Itunes tooks ages to "import" files. Eventually Itunes opened but with only half of my original tunes (1500+ songs 8.11GB) and had nothing from today's import.
I found a post suggesting to hold down OPTION while starting Itunes. Then I selected a file from my hard drive > me > music > Itunes > "Itune library" with the most recent date and shezam, Itunes once again has all my songs, as before. Nothing I imported from the terrabyte drive today appears however, but no matter.
In my "Itunes" file there appear MULTIPLE Itunes libraries ! such as Itunes library, Itunes Library (damaged), and as well a folder called "Previous Itunes Libraries" which itself contains multiple Itunes Library files and multiple "previous Itunes Library files" with dates back to 2007. These I want to clean up and delete .... should I ? ... Can I ?

I would do a transfer of purchases from the phone and not sync. If you sync then it will want to start over and sync music that is on the MacBook Pro. If you want to transfer the music, check out the article below that will give you multiple options on how to move. I have also provided on how to sync with multiple computers.

I accidentally synced my mum's brand new iPad to my mac book air. A few days later I realised that my iTune library on my mac is completely gone. So is my iPhone 4s after I synced it with my mac. How do I get my old iTunes library back? I tried using icloud on my iphone but it stated that I have never back up my phone before. So I guess my iCloud data is gone too? But I have back up my mac in my harddrive using time machine. So how do I get my old itune library back? Please help! Thanks!
1) ensure iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPhone but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPhone with it.

Confused.The ipod/iphone/ipad are not backup sotrage devices.
Certainly you did not upgrade your computer without making sure that your backup copy of your computer was up to date. Just use your backup copy of your computer to put everything back. -

Note that the iPod backup that iTunes makes does not included synced media like apps and music. -
My iTunes Library only shows purchased songs from iTunes, i have music on my iPod from purchased and cds i have burnt from my computer, this all used to show up in my library but since having to have a new hard drive in my computer my library only shows purchsed songs. With me so far?! What's alarming to me is that I have so many files with the "iTunes Library" name...moreover, it seems as if my CURRENT and ACTIVE iTunes Library database on my hard drive in my music folder that was last updated "today" is only 5.8 MB in size, while the older iTunes Library databases on my external drive that are listed above are sized 5.2, 10.5, 11.8, 14.3, 15.7, and 15.8 MB!
This implies to me that I've lost some important files or data in transferring my iTunes back from my external to my new local, internal drive.
What should I do with these multiple (and currently unused) iTunes Libraries found on my peripheral drive? I try to open them and nothing seems to happen. I just don't want to lose any tracks as my library is large and varied.

If you think you are missing some songs from your current library, this application will list the file paths of the files in your designated "iTunes Media" folder which are not in iTunes' library. Copying old iTunes library onto a new hard drive: special question:
How do i do this when the music in my old iTunes library was not all in the itunes media folder (some was in downloads, shared folder, etc). Should I put these folders in the places where they were on my old hard drive (for example the "shared" folder was on the desktop) or should i just put everything into the iTunes media folder. My main goal here is to recreate my old itunes library with the playlists intact while also having all the songs recognized (none of those exclamation points because it cant locate the file). Sorry to repeat myself but I just want to make it clear because i dont want this to mess up. Should i put all my music into the itunes media folder for it to show up in the old library, or should I keep it in the folders it always was in and just place those folders in the same locations on this hard drive? Right, and the way you do this is to hold down the shift key while starting iTunes. (Note: this does not mean holding down the shift key while you click on the icon. It means holding it down immediately after that while the program is starting up.) This will bring up a dialog asking what iTunes library you want to use. Point to the old library, and you're in business.
Let me know if this will work: I drag and drop my
whole music folder to the new drive, then in iTunes I
go to File --> Import and import the itl or xml file.
I've heard this might not work because the xml file
has pathways that refer to a specific drive letter
which will be different.
That's correct. You can edit the XML to fix the pathnames, but I wouldn't recommend that unless editing XML is something you do regularly. -

- You can only syncewith one iTunes library. It sounds like you change libraries such as changing the computer.
