Old Mac Dual G5 - want to upgrade from Tiger 10.4.11

Problem. I have an older Dual G5 Mac and I would love to be able to upgrade my Final Cut Pro 5 and my OS X version, but in order to do so, I need an Intel based Mac. Background: I used this system to edit training videos and wedding videos several years ago, but my full time job has kept me from using the system more than a few times a year. I have a new project that I would like to be able to updgade my system for, as well as purchase the new version of SmartSound for my music beds, which also requires 10.6. Is there anything I can do here, or am I just stuck with this very nice and expensive outdated system?
Thanks!

You need to purchase an Intel Mac to run Mac OS X 10.6.

  • I want to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard...I'm apprehensive about Lion.

I've been hearing so many "glitch" anecdotes about Lion. Until these problems are resolved
I want to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard but I'll be buying a new Apple computer to
    do that..
I presently have a a 10.4 iMAC with only 2.33 GB of memory and I'm getting a new puter
in order to have 4 GB. Is it recommended to use Lion with a new Apple computer or can I use
Snow Leopard without missing out on anything? Are the stories about Lion just the usual thing
that always happens with a new upgrade? Tiger has worked perfectly for me for 6 years but that
has been on computer that is 6 years old. (POWERPC) Does a new iMAC computer with intel
require the latest operating system to work at top efficiency? Is my apprehension about Lion
an over reaction to anecdotal info?

Some of this is answered best by knowing what model computers are involved. If you are truly getting a brand new (as opposed to a newer used) computer then it will likely come with Lion installed, unless there's some old stock (which even then would have Lion installed but could still run under Snow Leopard which you would have to buy separately).  Macs will normally only run the version system that comes installed, or newer, so if you are getting a brand new Mac you won't have any choice but to run Lion (or its successors). It won't run Snow Leopard unless it is a new used computer.
As for Lion stories, those would best be answered on the Lion forum. I still run Tiger which I why I'm on this forum.  There's always issues with any upgrade.  For me the biggest drawback to Lion is all my software is PPC generation and Lion stopped supporting PPC completely. If I got a brand new computer I would also have to upgrade all my software which could easily run to over a thousand dollars more.

#1 Do a complete bootable backup of your drive before upgrading. That way should anything happen you can revert back to the start and try again.
Make sure you meet Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
You might also want to make sure you don't have software issues with SL:

I think you mean you are replacing your Airport Extreme with a Time Capsule. Time Machine is software integrated into OS X 10.5 & 10.6 used to automatically backup a system to an external HD. Time Capsule is an Airport Extreme that has a hard disk integrated into it that can be used for storage or  as a Time Machine backup drive.
Because you are currently on Tiger 10.4.x you can backup to a external HD using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. Having a backup is very wise before doing any major system update. After  you have created the backup and have successfully upgraded to Snow Leopard you can still use the external HD for many things. The strategy I'd recommend is to use the new Time Capsule as your Time Machine backup and then use the external HD as backup using SuperDuper or CCC. Redundant backups is wise because backups can (and do) fail too! In addition both SD and CCC are bootable clones, this is useful in that if your internal HD crashes you can boot from a cloned drive and continue working until the internal HD is replaced.
Below are some links to some articles from MacWorld, I would recommend reading them where you find a common theme, redundant backups. Backup Plan I, Backup Plan II & Backup Plan III.

  • Want to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard

I spent over an hour through the apple store web site and cant find a way to upgrade directly from Mac OS 10.4 Tiger to the latest Snow Leopard version.
The Apple web site gives only one purchase possibility : to upgrade from Leopard 10.5 to Snow Leopard 10.6. But how to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard ?

this has been oft asked and answered. you can buy a Macbox set which will give you snow leopard, ilife and and iwork. or you can buy a $29 standalong snow leoaprd dvd although there is a big disagreement on the board whether using it to go from tiger to snow leopard directly violates ULA (I think it does). but the actual disk is the same as in the macbox set and either one will upgrade you to SL.

  • Want to Upgrade from Tiger

Hey, I'm still on Tiger 10.4.11 and I want to upgrade to snow leopard.
If I do, will I lose all my saved passwords?
I'm doing online courses and I had to use a one-time use code to get onto my site. If I upgrade, will I lose the use of that site?

The Snow Leopard installer is designed to upgrade the OS from Tiger or Leopard to Snow Leopard without disturbing any of your user files. In fact, it has a number of built-in features that only work or work best if applied to an existing system rather than to an erased drive.
To use this method, simply follow Apple's instructions: insert the installer DVD & launch the "Install Mac OS" application. This is a 'pre-install' app that performs the equivalent of Disk Utility's verify disk step, updates the database of incompatible apps on the DVD using the existing OS's network connection settings, performs other pre-installation checks, & then writes this & other info & files to the HD for use after it restarts the computer to perform the actual install as the root user running from the DVD's copy of the OS. (This makes checking or repairing permissions prior to the install unnecessary.) The install process itself will replace old OS components with the new ones, install or update other apps based on what is already installed, update caches, & move known incompatible apps to a root level "Incompatible Software" folder.
This method seems to work flawlessly for the vast majority of users; however, there is always the possibility that something will go wrong. For this reason, I strongly recommend that you back up everything to a clone of the pre-upgrade state of the HD before you start the upgrade. Disk Utility can be used for this but many users find SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner easier to use for this.

  • I want to upgrade from Tiger 10.5 to Lion. I need to install the snow leopard first but they stoped shipping it to Greece. How do I get it? Please help.

    Hello guys!
I am facing a big problem.  I need to upgrade from OS X 10.5 to Lion BUT I need to upgrade to Snow Leopard first. They have stoped shipping to Greece and I am not able to find it anywhere (even Amazon does not ship this product here!!!) What I am supposed to do? Please help me.

Clone backup your hard drive at least twice*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Erase and install Lion from the USB Flash Drive version that's available on the online store.
Use the Migration Assistant to import the data, if you are certain everything is compatible with Lion.  Read this user tip to determine if it might be incompatible:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2465
If you have any PowerPC (Rosetta) Applications, you may have to manually import the data from the backup:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295
And then find the applications that are equivalent to them that are Lion compatible.

  • Want to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard and have questions...

I recently purchased an Airport extreme after my previous router/wifi unit went up in smoke. Had to use the PC with XP to set it up as the iMac has 10.4.11 and I supposedly need 10.5.x to setup the airport with the iMac. From reading the upgrade specs and system requirements, it appears I have no issue upgrading... just have to find a copy of Leopard. There in lies my question, as copies are no longer available from Apple (per what I was told at the store, and don't see them on the web), if I buy a copy off ebay or Craig's list, unless I can find a brand new sealed box.... do I take the chance of buying a copy that somebody installed, and now the serial number is registered and therefore is no good anymore? How does that work, is the serial number of the software registered to the machine serial number and once used, the disk is worthless on another computer? I realize that there are "family" copies and developer copies with what, 5 licenses and unlimited? What about the standard "retail" package, once it's installed it's worthless to anybody but the person that originally used it?

There is no serial numbering/registration. This is not Windows. You are on your honor.
You always take a chance purchasing from eBay and Craig's List in as much as most of these sellers do not know what they are selling and/or miss-represent the item. Can't tell you how many folks come here trying to install an OS unsuccessfully only to find out that they bought a machine specific OS version that the seller swore would work on their Mac.

  • Upgrade from Tiger

I want to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard. Apple makes you purchase a suite with iLife 09.. I have no use for iLife 09.. I don't want to purchase a suite.. I just want to purchase Snow Leopard...
    How can I do this?..

Here's Leopard from a trusted source for $95.99. I would stay away from E-Bay. Most of them are not universal and won't work on any Mac then the one it came with.

  • Upgrading from Tiger!

I want to upgrade from tiger onto leapord, I have the following questions in mind:
Q1) Will all my applications I use in tiger remain there and work in leapord too?
Q2) What about the settings each application have e.g bookmarks in Safari and esp the dates in my ical etc will they all stay?
Q3) What about all the widgets I have to give me ready info will they also migrate smoothly?
    Q4) Is it worth upgrading?
I have the leapord disc in my hand right now and I am dying to try it but I dont want to go through the hassle of installing and updating each and everything.
I have the following specifications will it run smoothly like tiger?
    Model Name: MacBook
    Model Identifier: MacBook1,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 1.83 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
    Memory: 512 MB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MB11.0061.B03
    SMC Version: 1.4f12

    Hi ahsan366;
My suggestion is to clone your system drive and then test the clone by booting from it. If the clone test good that Upgrade to Leopard. This way you can test it for yourself. If it works you are done. If not, restore the clone and you are back to where you are right now.
This is exactly what I did with both my MacBook Pro and my PowerMac Quad. I had no problems with either of them.

  • I want to upgrade from Photoshop Elements 5 to Lightroom 5.  Can Lightroom 5 read/convert a Photoshop Elements 5 catalog, or is Elements 5 too old to read?

I want to upgrade from Photoshop Elements 5 to Lightroom 5.  Can Lightroom 5 read/convert a Photoshop Elements 5 catalog including all of the tags, captions, etc, or is Elements 5 too old for Lightroom 5 to read/convert?  What's the best way to migrate?  (My catalog has over 100k images in it.)

Adobe changed the catalog software from PSE6 onwards to the SQLite database – as used in Lightroom.
Earlier versions of PSE including PSE5 used a Microsoft Access database, stored in a file called [Catalog Name].psa.
If you have already embedded keywords and captions by writing file info into the images they should be readable even if catalog conversion fails. Lightroom does have the ability to import a PSE catalog but in view of the age of PSE5 I would recommend downloading the 30 day free trial of LR5.6 and then you can judge the level of success of catalog conversion.
